There was a reflective mood before kick off here at wembley as we observed, as uefa director, the silence, in memory of the swedish citizens who were killed in belgium. It was looking back to the last euros fine away england beat italy at wembley. There is a reminder of that result when italy opened the scoring after just 15 minutes, unpacking the England Defence in a way that the new italian manager Luciano Spalletti would have been very pleased by. Englands response was led by the drive and the vision ofjude bellingham, whether in the white shirt of real madrid or indeed with england. His run into the box won the penalty for harry kane to convert in the first half. His run across the halfway line and vision to pick up marcus rashford, a good finish from rashford, a good finish from rashford, gave england their second goal. And then the harry kane with a strength, the determination, holding off the defenders to make a 3 1 and secure qualification. How italy, how any of englands rivals would love to post their attacking options. That surely gives england real excitement to go with the qualification and now look ahead. Joe wilson there at wembley. Lets hearfrom england boss gareth southgate. I think the biggest thing for us is the mentality we have. Good technical players, good physicality, but we have to keep winning big matches like tonight, and we showed real composure with the ball in the moments where we conceded, and took control of the game again in the second half, when our back players, our goalkeeper, that was the big step, big evolution for us, i think. We played past the press, through the press, and we showed really good composure to build the game and keep possession of the ball. The defeat leaves italy three points behind second placed ukraine, with a game in hand. Elsewhere on tuesday, Northern Ireland lost 1 0 at home to group leaders, slovenia, while san marino scored theirfirst goal in almost a year, and theirfirst in a competitive game for over two years, to equalise against denmark, although the danes eventually won, 2 1. To the cricket world cup, and a big shock as The Netherlands have beaten south africa by 38 runs. Its their first win at this years tournament, and only their third ever in the competition. Patrick geary reports. Behind The Netherlands, the himalayas. In front of them, an improbable climb. South africa, unbeaten at this tournament, surely too quick and too good for a team 14th in the world. This game had already been truncated by rain, and the south african seem determined to shorten it further. The netherlands reduced to 112 6, down and out in dharamsala. So the dutch captain took the wheel. Scott edwards, once a trainee electrician, sparked an unlikely fight back. He was joined by our young doubt, number ten, joined by our young doubt, numberten, dancing in the dark. They reached 245. Impressive, but a surmountable summit, untiltender impressive, but a surmountable summit, until tender bavuma, bowled by roelof van der merwe, who once played for south africa. Now here is paul van meckering, who used to deliver take a ways, presumably expressed. Fourwickets take a ways, presumably expressed. Four wickets fell for eight runs as south africa, the Third Best Team in the world disintegrated, and an Astonishing Dutch Victory was completed comfortably as world cup exits go, this was himalayan in its scale. Patrick geary, bbc news. Taylor fritz is through to the last 16 at the japan open. The defending champion looked in great form, as he beat Cameron Norrie in straight sets. The top seed won, 6 4, 6 3, and will face home favourite Shintaro Mochizuki next for a place in the quarter finals. Joining him in the next round is fellow american, ben shelton, who beat japans taro daniel, 36, 64, 76. Shelton a us open semi finalist struggled with his serve in the opening set, and had to dig deep to get back into the contest. The number two seed, casper ruud, is also through, after beating japans yosuke watanuki, 7 6, 6 3. Elsewhere, there were wins for Alex De Minaur and diego schwartzman. England have confirmed a clean bill of health, as they prepare to take on defending champions, south africa, in the Rugby Union World cup semi finals on saturday. Its four years since the springboks beat them, to lift the trophy injapan. England havent been totally convincing in the campaign so far. Our Sports Correspondent andy swiss is in paris. They struggled in their warm up games, and yet here they are, they are in the world cup semifinals, and you do get the sense that their coach Steve Borthwick has used that criticism is a motivating tool with his players. That said, his players know they will need more than just a Siege Mentality on saturday. They certainly look pretty relaxed in training earlier on today at their new Training Base on the outskirts of paris. They had a bit of fun, played a game of football, the good news for england as they say that all 33 of their players are fit and available for selection, which is probablyjust as well, because they know that in south africa they face a huge challenge. Kevin sinfield summed it up pretty challenge. Kevin sinfield i summed it up pretty well, challenge. Kevin sinfield summed it up pretty well, south africa are pretty much the complete package. They have always had this huge physicality, this immensely powerful pack, and that really was the foundation of that world cup win in 2019 but since then there is a sense they have branded their repertoire. They have some fantastic backs, full of attacking flair, and as we saw in the quarterfinal against france over the weekend. South africa, they are the world number ones, the world champions of course. They will be the overwhelming favourites on saturday but england will be hopeful they can cause an upset. Britains Lucy Charles Barclay set a new course record, as she won the ironman World Championship for the first time. Charles barclay is just the third briton to win the World Championship, and told me earlier how it feels to finally be crowned world champion. It feels incredible to be world champion, especially after thejourney i have had. I have been second here four times, that was back in 2017, we lost two World Championships here, because of the pandemic and in that time i have also had two pretty bad injuries, so to come back from that and finally get the win, itjust feels like an absolute dream come true and it really does feel like i have dedicated my career to try to win this race. You must have gone into the race this weekend feeling good, physically, how did it feel as you were going round the course, did you know at the time you were on course to win, did it feel good . From the moment the gun went, i felt great, i had a very strong swim, thats where my background is, i used to be an elite level swimmer, so i had a solid start, i had about 90 seconds on the next group of women out of the water so the perfect start, got onto the bike, i felt really in control, ifelt solid, i knew i was growing the time gaps, even over the strong cyclists, and actually i could not believe it when i found out after the race i had actually done the fastest bike split of the day. Getting onto the marathon, unfortunately i was in a lot of pain from the very beginning, i had a bit of a calf strain one week out from the race and i had to be mentally strong at that point and just know that no amount of pain i was enduring would be worse than not winning this race. I guess then the overwhelming emotion when you crossed the finish line, it was all worth it . It was definitely all worth it, running up to that finish line, i have done it five times, and four times before, i was second, so i did not get to grab that tape, so i feel like this time i was running up to the line, i did not even slow down, all i was focusing on was getting that tape, and it was amazing to do it, and it definitely feels like a huge weight is off my shoulders, it has been a journey to win this race, it has loomed over me in all of my training, and i always feel like i have been the bridesmaid at the World Championship, so it feels amazing to finally be the champion. For now, i will enjoy some downtime, a bit of celebrating, but now ijust feel really happy for next season, that weight is lifted, i almost feel like i can enjoy racing and set different goals and have a bit of fun. Theres plenty more on the bbc sport app, as well, but from myself, paul scott, and the whole sportsday team, thank you for wathcing. Well see you next time. Hello, there. Its been a fine start to this week, but things are set to turn more unsettled, very autumnal, and even quite stormy, as we see strong winds, gales, and Heavy Rain Spreading Northwards across the uk. So some of this rain and strong wind likely to cause some disruption, towards the end of the week. Now, its storm babet, which the met office have named, will be pushing northwards during wednesday, wednesday night, across the uk, then parking itself across the north of the uk for thursday and friday. So Rainfall Totals really will be mounting up, and i can show you this, in fact, on the Rainfall Accumulation Anomaly you can see all areas seeing a lot of rainfall, but its eastern scotland, parts of Northeast England, that bear the brunt. Some of the heaviest of the rainfall sits here, where we have some concerns with the risk of some localised flooding, but because of the recent flooding across scotland, the ground is saturated, the met office have issued an Amber Warning for this east northeast corner, it could see up to 50 to 200 mls of rain by the time the weeks out. That could cause some disruption. Wednesday starts off fine for many; central, northern, eastern areas, plenty of sunshine. It will be windy, mind you. Rain starts to pepper Northern Ireland, and then southern britain, first signs of storm babet pushing in here, later on wednesday. Some of this rain could be quite heavy and thundery, but strong and gusty winds for all areas, even though it will be quite mild, 14 to 16 celsius might not feel like that, because of the strength of the wind. Storm babet continues to move northwards across the uk during wednesday night, parks itself across northern england, Northern Ireland, southern scotland. That starts thursday morning, some showers pushing into southern areas later on. It will be a mild night to come. This is the pressure chart, then, for thursday it looks like the Weather Front will be hanging around across northern and eastern scotland. Rainfall totals really mounting here, strong, gale force winds, particularly for the Northern Isles and north sea coast here. Further south, itll be a mixture of variable cloud, some showery bursts of rain, some of which could be heavy and thundery, but mild, despite the wind and the rain 15 to 18 celsius. Similar story, as we head into friday it looks like the northern half of the country will see the heaviest of the rain. Again, Northeast England could bear the brunt of the heavy rain on friday. Elsewhere, its clear spells, but also a mixture of showers, some of which could be heavy and thundery. Again, mild in the south, cooler in the north. See you later.
