Good evening from jerusalem, as the clock ticks down on israels order that more than a Million People living in Northern Gaza should leave their homes and move to the south within 2a hours. The Israeli Defence forces have been massing on the border, ahead of an expected Ground Offensive into gaza in response to last weekends attacks by members of hamas, a group designated as a Terror Organisation by many western governments, including the uk. As many as 1300 people died in those attacks. There have already been several days of airstrikes on gaza, which have left around 1500 palestinians dead, and now the Evacuation Order States Residents in the territory should move to the area south of wadi gaza. Hamas says the order should be ignored, claiming its fake propaganda, while the un warns its impossible for palestinians to fully comply, and that there could be devastating humanitarian consequences. Well get the very latest from across the region, with anna foster on the israel lebanon border, and jeremy bowen here injerusalem, and well look at the situation inside gaza. But first, heres jeremy bowen. To wina to win a war, a country has to break the will of its enemy to fight. History suggests air strikes alone wont do that, even ones as heavy as israels in gaza. So israel will have to send troops into the rubble if, as it says, it wants to destroy hamas. Telling civilians to get out is part of preparing the battlefield. Leaflets are non lethal airdrop but full of menace, told more thani Million People airdrop but full of menace, told more than i Million People to more thani Million People to move south. Many people from gazza trying to escape israels anger are read to look like descendants of palestinians who fled or were forced out of their homes at gunpoint in israels Independence War in 1948. Palestinians call it the catastrophe. Hamas sent their answer more rockets and told people to stay put. In israel, lloyd austin, the us defence secretary brought his israeli counterpart support and weapons and another reminder not to break the laws of war. , , ~. ,. , war. Terrorists like hamas the deliberately war. Terrorists like hamas the deliberately target war. Terrorists like hamas the deliberately target civilians,. War. Terrorists like hamas the i deliberately target civilians, but democracies dont. This is a time for result and not revenge. Refrigerated containers whole body is awaiting identification. Some of more than 1300 israelis and foreigners killed by hamas. Israel says hamas will feel its revenge, not civilians. Palestinians protested in the west bank. 11 had been shot dead by the israeli army by late afternoon. Almost all the violence between israelis and palestinians before last weeks hamas assault was in the west bank. It is very tense and could get much worse. Jerusalem was quiet but not calm. Only older palestinians were allowed to pray at Al Aqsa Mosque by Israeli Security forces. The mood in jerusalem was grim, full of foreboding. The holy city is at the epicentre of the conflict. Palestinians said they feared that israels anger at the hamas attack could be directed at them. It feels as if this crisis is going up a gear. Extreme pressure on civilians in gaza, tension here injerusalem. No one knows where this is going, but it is certain this is a dangerous moment, the worst middle east crisis in a generation. Until last weekend, israel believed the long conflict with the palestinians could be contained. That illusion has gone. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, well, more than 1500 people have been killed in gaza since israel launched its retaliatory air strikes after the hamas attack. A total israeli blockade is in force, with fuel, food and water running out. Israel says it wont lift the restrictions unless hamas frees all hostages. John donnison has more on the dire humanitarian crisis in the territory, and a warning, his report does contain, some distressing images. Israel has now been pounding gaza, targeting hamas, it says, for almost a week. Only when The Dust Settles does the devastation become clear. Our enemies are evil. Theyre cowards killing children, says this man amid the wreckage of his home. They have no humanity, he goes on. Fewjobs are more challenging here than that of a first responder. Under all this, somebody is alive. For now. For three days, he says, i didnt go home, but it never stops. For some, its all too much, and these paramedics are working while under fire. The deepening crisis on the ground in gaza. Theres a constant fear a new front could open up in the war if the Islamist Group hexbollahdecides to attack israel, in support of hamas. Hezbollah s Deputy Leader told a rally in lebanon that it was fully prepared to join the fight, when the time comes. And in the last few hours it has been confirmed that a lebanese journalist has been killed the first civilian death in that area. Anna foster reports now from the israel lebanon border. Loaded and ready, these Winding Roads are now home to thousands of soldiers. Theyve been sent north to reinforce the border. If a second front in this war opens up here, the outcome could be catastrophic. Further escalation in the north was huge, but we know what to do. And we will. This is what we say all the time. Now, if we start a war with lebanon, ultimately we still think it was a fire. Each time theres an exchange of fire over the border, tensions rise. This reserve unit tell me that they are on high alert right now. The people here who work in the tech industry. There are tour guides. There is even a Fitness Instructor most of the all dropped everything to come here and face this huge threat on the northern border. It really forces have been preparing to repel a hezbollah attack for years. These Border Communities are vulnerable. And thats what now theyre emceeing out. In shalom eight, 70 5 of families have left town. One of the few people who stayed is madeleine. See, there is no one here. My brother lives here in the place i take you, and i show you the house is empty. And they took all our clothes and. Its soon clear up what people have fled. And the bombs is coming. Im thinking. Do you hear that . Yeah. You need to run, 0k. These women think the war will come here next. Im scared. Now to go to any. Place in israel, even many of my friends asked me to come there. But i am scared. There are diplomatic efforts to try and hold often escalation here, but in this underground shelter, the hope of peace feels far away. The News Agency Reuters has confirmed that the outgoing far you have there, that incident that was directed towards southern lebanon, roberto says one of its Video Journalist was killed and several others were injured. And we are seeing now these daily incidents along that border, raising huge concerns. Diplomatic efforts from the us, the uk and efforts will not be enough to try and maintain some kind of stability on this northern border, and the fear is that if a new front opens up here in the north, that could draw in the wider middle east region, big powers here like iran and saudi arabia, and ultimately it would have an effect around the world. Anna, thank you for that. Anna foster, live on the frontier between israel and lebanon. Nearly a week on, more details are emerging of the atrocities committed last saturday by hamas Gunmen Injewish Communities in southern israel. One of the most shocking massacres by the group, designated as a Terror Organisation by many western governments, including the uk, took place in the village of kfar aza. Nick beake has been speaking to one of the survivors, and a warning, his report does contain details, some of you may find distressing. They are the survivors. 22 year old neta and her boyfriend, santiago, escaped from hamass massacre in their village. She was shot six times in the legs. We start to hear gunshots for all the, they start. One apartment, one apartment, one apartment, start to break the windows, break the doors, and start to shoot. You hear sounds, people screaming. The killers filmed themselves on the loose, murdering dozens in Thejewish Community of kfar aza. With no israeli army to be seen, neta realised the only person who could save her was her dad, who she hadnt spoken to in six years. She managed to message him. They are close, she wrote. Lock the doors, her dad replies. Please, answer, please. But the gunmen found them. They started to shoot like. Like we are nothing. I fell down on the ground and Santiago Scream at me, neta, please, stand up, start to run. If you dont stand up, were going to die. Hiding under a pile of rubbish, she texted her dad again. Dad, they shot me. Help. Im coming, he replies. My heart stops, and my brain stopped to work. You know, i was mad. When shimon, a plainclothes policeman, arrived at the village, he came under attack. I took my gun, and they start to shoot at me. I shot at them. And four people get from their houses over there and, with ak 47s, start to shoot me. Eventually, shimon found neta near their burnt out home and took them to safety. Neta says israel must now respond in the strongest possible way. I dont want the hamas any more in my life. They need destroy them, one by one. Have you been thinking about what may happen to civilians in gaza if there is a big Ground Operation by the Israeli Military there . My country didnt want to hurt the civilians. I want they be safe. I dont think they need to die, like i dont need to die. They are like me. But civilians are being killed in this war, in ever increasing numbers. Nick beake, bbc news, tel aviv. Israels continuing trauma. Earlier, we saw some of the protests that took place in the west bank in support of palestinians in gaza, and there have been similar demonstrations across the middle east. This was the scene in baghdad, where thousands turned out during friday prayers. There have been demonstrations in other parts of the middle east. Lets get a final word from jeremy. He is here with me. At the start of the programme, you talked about things ratcheting up a little bit, a change of gear. What did you mean . If we go back a week, hamas gunmen was getting ready for what they were going to do the following day, but diplomats, people who were involved in the negotiations, were thinking about whether israel and saudi arabia and the americans might together come up with some sort of deal that could potentially they hope to revolutionise the middle east and things could get a lot better. So much has changed. But on another level, actually, while what happened, the enormity of what happened, the enormity of what happened is having a catastrophic effect, its cataclysmic in the region, the conflict, the mistake i think that was being made for some time was that the world was kind of assuming the conflict here could be managed, could be contained. And i think we have discovered very, very definitively that it cannot. White jeremy bowen, our international thank you. Jeremy bowen, our International Editor thank you. It seems now a possible Israeli Ground assault into gaza, is not a matter of if, but when. Israels new unity government wants to destroy hamas once and for all, reflecting the anger of an entire nation. But the un has realfears for Palestinian Civilians in any ground assault, warning its impossible for everyone to get out of the way in time. For those who do leave, abandoning their homes and all they know, theres a big question when might they return . Thats it from us here injerusalem. Now back to you, sophie, in the studio. Studio clive, thank you. Scotlands first minister, humza yousaf, says that israel is going too far in gaza. His wifes parents, from dundee, are both trapped there after Travelling To Gaza last week to visit their son and grandchildren. Humza yousaf says he and his wife feel powerless to do anything about it. It comes as he prepares for his first Scottish National Party Conference as leader, which gets under way on sunday. He has been talking to our political editor, chris mason. Hello, first minister. Nice to see you. A man up against it politically confronting too a family crisis. Humza yousaf shows me the latest text message from his Mother In Law, shortly after shed sent him this video. Wheres peoples hearts in the world, to let this happen in this day and age . May god help us. Goodbye. There is a sense of helplessness and distress, and every day that goes on, you fear the situation. Ijust had a message from my Mother In Law to say there is now bombing in the neighbourhood. Nobody has said that israel does not have the right to protect itself from terror. All of us have said that, myself included. But they are going too far, are they . But collective punishment cannot be justified. Yes, they are going too far. Collective punishment cannot be justified. Back home in scotland, humza yousaf faces the most tricky of political challenges. His predecessor, nicola sturgeon, was arrested, as was her husband, the snps former chief executive, peter murrell, and the partys former treasurer. All were released without charge as part of an Ongoing Investigation into the partys finances. Last week, you lost a by election to labour. This week youve lost an mp to the conservatives. Are the snp in freefall . No. No, we were widely expected to lose the rutherglen by election. And of course, no party wants to lose an mp. I think, by anybody s objective measure, the last six months have been some of the most difficult six months the party has faced in its modern history. The government at westminster has refused to grant another independence referendum, despite there being majority support for one in the scottish parliament. But polls suggest the snp has failed to secure a clear and sustained majority of support for independence across scotland, when arguably there were favourable conditions for those making that case. Youve had a conservative government, or a series of conservative governments, that scotland didnt vote for. You had brexit that scotland didnt vote for, and not been able to assemble that clear and consistent majority. In terms of your actual question, i think its bang on the money, actually. You get to the nub of the issue. That we can point out westminster s failings, because there are many failings. The point is, you have also got to give people a reason to vote for independence. This is a nation split down the middle on its constitutional future, but where the Biggest Party making the case for independence, the snp, is encountering turbulence, and lots of it. Chris mason, bbc news, in glasgow. A teacher in france has been stabbed to death and two other people have been seriously injured during a knife attack at a school in arras in northern france this morning. The 20 year old attacker, a former pupil, has been arrested. He was a former pupil at the school and was known to the French Security services. Gas prices in Global Markets have risen sharply amid fresh concerns over supplies in the wake of the war between israel and hamas. It is the latest in a series of global crises weighing on the world economy. There had been hopes that energy and fuel prices could soon fall but the Chancellorjeremy Hunt says the situation could take some time. Now World Leaders are considering using frozen russian assets to help pay for the war in ukraine. Our economics editor faisal islam reports. At the very moment the Finance Ministers and bankers who run the world economy, meeting here in morocco, had dared to talk of a turnaround after three years of crisis. What is happening in the middle east has cast a new shadow. Gas prices are back up again, and ministers acknowledge the Russia Ukraine crisis shows no signs of lifting. Its not just whats happening in israel, its the war in ukraine that is proving much more protracted than people hoped. Should people at home, though, expect that there might be an impact . People at home recognise that gas prices are four times what they were before ukraine, oil prices are nearly 40 higher, and the single biggest cause of instability is putins aggression in ukraine. But we do have to be honest with people, that this is going to take some time. But there could be a situation where the uk government could seize some of these frozen russian assets and use the proceeds or the profits to help fund ukraine. The g7 have asked Central Banks to look at what might be possible, because we are absolutely clear, this is an illegal war and we need to do everything we can to make sure that russia cannot continue to afford to fund it. Just when this Inflation Shock seemed to be settling down, global gas markets have found another rationale in the middle east crisis to keep on rising. And the extraordinary idea of seizing profits from the frozen russian assets is g7 Finance Ministers trying to target the original source of this wave of instability, russia. Its a sign sanctions arent working right now, and one reason why uncertainty continues to cloud the global economy. Faisal islam, bbc news in marrakech. The Covid Inquiry has been shown whatsapp messages exchanged between some of borisjohnson s top advisors in Downing Street during the pandemic. In this small Group Sharing messages there was simon case, who had only weeks before been made head of the Civil Service and he is asked why they are looking at this, and he says its whatever carriejohnson, Boris Johnsons says its whatever carriejohnson, borisjohnson s partner, its whatever she cares about. He goes on to say, i was always told that Dominic Cummings, the prime ministers chief political adviser, i was always told dominic was the secret pm. The real person in charge is carry. At the same time there were also notes being made by the chief scientific adviser, and he talked about a Downing Street riven with factions. A fraction around carrie johnson, and a fraction around special advisers. Johnson, and a fraction around specialadvisers. In johnson, and a fraction around special advisers. In this message we seem to see the cabinet secretary, the head of the Civil Service, dealing with one of those factions in a not very diplomatic way. The inquiry Heard Borisjohnson was caught in the middle of this. It also heard from some scientific advisers today, specialists in long covid, who said mrjohnson was writing on to note that it was nonsense, and they said that was shocking. Nasa has launched a spacecraft on a Six Year Mission to an asteroid that could be made of more than just rock. Scientists think it has a metallic surface made up of iron, nickel and even gold. The asteroid, Called Psyche, could be the remnants of an ancient planet, as our science editor, rebecca morelle, reports. Three, two, one, engine ignition. Leaving the earth behind. And lift off for falcon heavy and psyche, on a mission to a metal asteroid in deep space. The start of a 2 billion mile journey, and this is its destination, a huge metallic space rock Called Psyche. We are going to go and see a kind of world that humans have never seen before. We dont have any close up pictures of it. We do not know what it looks like. To me thats the essence of exploration, that people always want to see what they havent seen yet. The spacecraft is packed with high tech instruments. It will power its epic voyage with solar arrays that are longer than a tennis court. Once it arrives at psyche it will orbit the 170 mile wide rock to work out exactly what its made of. Psyche is one of the most intriguing objects in our solar system. Most asteroids are rocky, but up to 60 of psyche is made from metal, elements like iron and nickel and perhaps small amounts of platinum and gold. And this is similar to the cores of some planets mercury, mars and the earth. So psyche offers us a way of studying what the centre of our own planet is like, a place we could never visit. One idea is that psyche was a planetesimal, the beginnings of a planet. But a collision may have blown its outer crust off so it never became a fully fledged world. There are probably lots of proto planets and what we call planetesimals forming, but then not all of them have survived to become planets. And the question is, why . Why arent there loads more planets than we expected, and psyche might be able to answer some of those questions. Landing burn has started. Here it comes. The rocket s boosters land back on earth and these are the first images of the spacecraft being released. It will arrive at psyche in 2029. Nasa says the wait will be worth it. Rebecca morelle, bbc news. What a long journey. Now back Down To Earth with Helen Willetts for the latest weather and a bit of sunshine for us. We certainly had some and we will see song but a shock to the system this weekend. Temperatures reach 20 degrees in the south as we have seen a week. This is the deviation from normal, orange and red temperatures above normal but the blue means temperature is below average this weekend. And they are coming behind this quite intense band of rain. Places like birmingham with a0 Millimetres Of Rain Today and a big drop in temperatures, six or 7 degrees. A wet evening with still a met Office Warning across south and eastern areas of the uk and then a rash of showers following on a brisk wind. Gales and severe gales in the far north east of scotland. Holding up far north east of scotland. Holding up the temperatures but A Touch Of Frost in the countryside, hopefully enough breeze to stop the mist and fog but that is coming. This is that cold wind, to show you where it comes from, right the way down from the arctic. We are mentioning is snow in showers over mountains in the north in the forecast but plenty of sunshine as we got off to a fine start on saturday morning, but remaining windy. Only easing later in the day. Most showers pestering Northern Areas but some will filter through the south and east later in the day. And the temperatures particularly in the south, significantly below what we have had this week and feeling colder in the wind. A shock to the system. Tomorrow evening and overnight, as High Pressure builds in further it looks like we will see a more widespread ground frost, the first widely cold night of the autumn. A chilly start on sunday, could be mist and fog around as well to contend with but again perhaps a bit more clout
