Hello, im matthew amroliwala. Welcome to verified live, israels Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Opposition Leader, benny gantz, have agreed to form an Emergency Government to manage the war with hamas. It comes as a hospital near the countrys Port City Of Ashkelon was struck by rocket fire. No casualties have been reported so far. Israel continues its bombardment of gaza for a fifth day. The territorys only power plant has stopped working after running out of fuel. Israeli troops are massing near the gaza border in preparation for what could be, a Ground Invasion of the territory as israel responds to saturdays attacks by hamas militants. Israeli artillery, like these units, around sderot, are firing towards gaza just part of the build up, for that possible Ground Invasion. 0vernight, 200 targets inside gaza were hit the strikes have continued through the course of the day. The Health Ministry in gaza says, more than 1,000 people have been killed entire neighbourhoods have been flattened. Food and medical supplies are said to be dwindling. Israel meanwhile says, that more than One Thousand Two Hundred israelis are now known to have been killed, in the hamas attacks. Shock waves continue, after details emerged yesterday from the kfar aza kibbutz. 0ne Military Commander said, it is not a war, it is not a battlefiled it is simply a massacre. Earlier, i spoke to our middle east correspondent Yolande Knell whos injerusalem and she gave me the latest on that hospital strike. We understand that the building, the medical centre, its where i was on sunday, was hit directly by a rocket. Certainly when i was there, there was intense rocket fire and we have seen that continuing through the day. Many of the rockets being intercepted by israels iron dome Missile Defence system but this is just another reminder that some of these rockets do get through, they do hit homes and other buildings, like this hospital. Its a hospital that treated hundreds of people who had been injured in those surprise attacks by hamas on saturday and had been really overwhelmed by that. I was speaking to the director of the hospital. It has had another hit, it had one not long before i had arrived there. Again, that had caused damage and sent people rushing off to shelters but it hadnt caused any deaths or serious injuries. Just a reminder of how dangerous the situation is and there has been for the last few hours, just constant updates saying there are warning sirens going off in the south of israel, in the locations close to the gaza strip. What it does is underline that five days into this that feeling of total unease there from citizens in israel, that feeling that they still are unsafe in some sort of form . Thats correct. Indeed, in ashkelon itself, a big city in the south, there was another infiltration by palestinian fighters earlier in the day. These kind of things are of course extremely unnerving. Its all stuff which is completely unprecedented. The scale and the complexity of what hamas launched on saturday and what has continued to have effects over the last few days, with new infiltrations, with fighters holding out and Holding People hostage, its extremely dramatic. There has been another Important Development politically in israel, where we have had news that a new unity government is being formed in terms of benny gantz, an Opposition Leader, joining the existing government. He will be a more moderate force and he himself is a former Chief Of Staff in the idf, in the Israeli Military. Another key member of his party is another former idf Chief Of Staff. So this will bring a certain level of expertise to the government. There will be a new war cabinet formed, we understand, which will include benny gantz, alongside the israeli Prime Minister minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Defence minister. All these Key Developments as israel looks to be preparing for a Ground Invasion of the gaza strip. At the moment, what we have is this extremely heavy bombardment of gaza continuing. We can talk to our World Affairs Editorjohn Simpson on exactly that and the wider issues we have seen play out over the last five days in just a moment or two. First, more of the latest from nick beake who is in tel aviv for us. The missiles rained down on gaza for another night. Israel said itsjets hit 200 targets in one specific part of the city which it claimed was home to those behind hamas s attack at the weekend. Sirens wail many civilians were on the receiving end. Taken to hospitals which were already said to be full. Drone buzzes palestinian officials said half of the dead in gaza are women and children. Killed as shops and homes were levelled. Translation children are now playing here, l where they should be sleeping. What is this . This is not a life. We are living here, surrounded by rubble. Gaza is destroyed. Everything is destroyed. Israels intensified attack came after the discovery of a massacre, in the Southern City of kfar aza. Israeli soldiers recapturing areas from hamas, said mothers and children were among those who had been murdered in their homes. They have Justjihad Machine to kill everybody. Without weapons, without nothing. Just normal citizens, that want to take their breakfast and thats all. And its a dreadful thing to see. It is very difficult to see it but we must remember who is the enemy and what is our mission. Our mission is the justice, were in the right side and all the world needs to be behind us. An official uk source has told the bbc there are now 17 british nationals who are either dead or missing, following hamas attack in israel. Children are among them. Many of these victims have not yet been named. Israeli troops are gathering on the edge of gaza, in ever greater numbers. Preparing for a much bigger battle. A Ground Operation into the heart of hamas controlled territory. Here at israels ministry of defence, they say theyre preparing to carry out their mission, to make sure that hamas will not be able to kill israeli civilians in the future. But any advancing forces are likely to encounter fierce resistance from the hamas fighters. Its feared the bloodshed of the past few days will only intensify. Nick beake, bbc news, tel aviv. We can speak Tojohn Simpson in a moment or two but i want to show some pictures that have come into us that we have been watching, that have been tweeted out by the Israeli Government account. This is in southern israel. You just saw a glimpse on the left hand side of the screen, that was James Cleverley, the uk foreign secretary, who is there visiting as Air Raid Sirens are going off, running into a building. As wejust loop are going off, running into a building. As we just loop those pictures around, it is quite quick but the foreign secretary there to lend support to israel but seeing very much at first hand just how fluid things are on the ground. This is in southern israel. He has been meeting Government Officials but those pictures that have just been tweeted by the Israeli Government. We are also waiting to hear from Antony Blinken, due to give comments before he takes off israel. We are keeping our eyes across the various picture feed that coming in and as soon as he starts talking, we will bring that to. We can speak Tojohn Simpson. I will come to the political changes in israel that have just been announced in a few moments your assessment first of all on the magnitude of what we are seeing. I on the magnitude of what we are seeina. ~ , , seeing. I think it is pretty important seeing. I think it is pretty important. You seeing. I think it is pretty important. You have seeing. I think it is pretty important. You have to l seeing. I think it is pretty important. You have to remember seeing. I think it is pretty important. You have to remember that hamas and hezbollah, different ends of israel, attack with rockets, kill people in israel virtually every week, ten days, months, whatever. This is something altogether different. This is, you have to go back to the 1973 Yom Kippur War when israel seemed quite so vulnerable to attack and it is that vulnerability which feeds the enmity towards israel and makes hamas makes, makes hezbollah feel, makes other groups feel they too can have a crack at israel and get away with it. So i think that is really important. The second parallel i would say it is with the invasion of lebanon, southern lebanon, back in 1982. The Israeli Government then was under attack from hezbollah and from the palestinians. It had a lot of Popular Public Support Around The World and then it invaded lebanon and it found the going very, very difficult. Started losing men, losing material, killing a lot of civilians, Public Opinion around the world shifted against them and then they were inside lebanon, found it really hard to find a moment to get out. That i think will be the case also in gaza. It will be very difficult for them to judge the moment to leave without looking as though they were going with their tails between their legs, which happened in lebanon in 1982. Those olitical happened in lebanon in 1982. Those Political Developments happened in lebanon in 1982. Those Political Developments we happened in lebanon in 1982. Those Political Developments we were just hearing about, again, your assessment of the importance of that. I assessment of the importance of that. ~ , assessment of the importance of that. ~ ,. , that. I think it is hugely important for benjamin that. I think it is hugely important for Benjamin Netting that. I think it is hugely important for Benjamin Netting because that. I think it is hugely important for Benjamin Netting because at l that. I think it is hugely important l for Benjamin Netting because at the moment, his government has the support of far right ministers for Benjamin Netanyahu, like the one that called for cruel retaliation against gazza and hamas. Gaza and hamas. It creates a kind of need and expectation to be more tough even than hamas has been. If. Netanyahu doesnt have to rely any more on ministers like that, if benny gantz, a much more liberalfigure, is in government with him, it will be easier to try to avoid the kind of civilian deaths which frankly the american government, the british government, the french government, are all Warning Netanyahu about at the moment. Dont let this get out of hand otherwise you will lose thus kind of support that you actually had. I kind of support that you actually had. , kind of support that you actually had. , had. I will come back to those oints in had. I will come back to those points in a had. I will come back to those points in a moment. Had. I will come back to those points in a moment. These i had. I will come back to those | points in a moment. These are pictures of some of the activity on the border with the israeli Artillery Firing into gaza. We know Artillery Firing into gaza. We know a build up of soldiers and other hardware. We werejust a build up of soldiers and other hardware. We were just playing pictures ofjames hardware. We were just playing pictures of James Cleverley. I mentioned the fact Antony Blinken is on his way. In terms of what we have got from the international community, in terms of effective diplomacy at this stage, what do you think . Ijust think it is too early to get any kind of effective diplomacy. It is going to be very hard to tell Benjamin Netanyahu not to respond in a tough kind of way in gaza because thatis a tough kind of way in gaza because that is what his entire population, really, would expect him to do. Impossible to get any kind of handle on the hamas at the moment. And anyway, that would probably have to include iran, which is trying to steer a slightly separate course, no matter what their involvement may have been before. So these are far too early days and we dont actually know, although we have all assumed, that netanyahu is going to invade gaza and control the whole area of gaza. But that hasnt even started yet. So you kind of Peace Negotiations before the war has kind of got going. You negotiations before the war has kind of got going of got going. You talked about the voices of caution of got going. You talked about the voices of caution because of got going. You talked about the voices of caution because the of got going. You talked about the voices of caution because the fear| voices of caution because the fear is that there is a wider conflict, this is just the start of something. William hague writing in third times, warning israel not to fall into a trap to just overreact. There is a real worry, isnt there, in various capitals, that this is just the start of something that could spill over . The start of something that could sill over . , the start of something that could sill over . , m , the start of something that could sillover . ,. , spill over . That is exactly what happened in lebanon in 1982. L spill over . That is exactly what happened in lebanon in 1982. That is something that i think all of western governments will be very, very worried about. You have to remember, gaza is not a country like lebanon, small though lebanon was, gazais lebanon, small though lebanon was, gaza is a tiny area, absolutely packed with people who cant escape. Mr netanyahu said the other day that palestinians and others should leave gaza. Well, there is nowhere they can leave. There is one exit into egypt and the egyptians have made it absolutely clear they are not going to let people through that. John sim son, to let people through that. Jeremy bowen to speaking to some military officials there on the ground. Let me tell you news that is coming in from the United Nations from geneva, just in the last few seconds as we were watching that. They are confirming that nine un staffers working with Un Palestinian Refugee Agency have been killed in the air strikes in the gaza strip since saturday. That has just been tweeted on the social media platform x. Confirmation of nine of their staff in the gaza strip had been killed in the bombardment we have seen since saturday. So those details just coming seen since saturday. So those detailsjust coming in. If seen since saturday. So those details just coming in. If there seen since saturday. So those detailsjust coming in. If there is more, obviously we will return to it. The agency of course provides Public Services including schooling, Primary Health Care and humanitarian aid in gaza, the west bank, and jordan. We had from them talking about their schools and their work on the ground, talking aboutjust the amount of people in gaza in those schools taking refuge. But nine of their Staff Members now confirmed to have died since saturday. Let is stay with that exact situation and what it is like the ordinary people in gaza on the ground. We know there is no water, internet, electricity, and the supplies of food have all been stopped in that seat. Lets find out in terms of the aid agencies how they are coping. Lets talk to james denselow. Hes the head of conflict and humanitarian policy and advocacy at save the children. Hes been to gaza himself many times and is in touch with the charitys teams on the ground. Thank you so much for being here on the programme. Tell me what your teams on the ground are saying to you. What they are saying is first of all it is important to show solidarity with my un colleagues who have lost members of their team. In a way it is unsurprising because what we are hearing from our teams on the ground, its a level of 360 violence like none other in gazas recent history does not this is a part of the world that is not a stranger to heavy violence. There is no safe place in gaza, there is nowhere safe to go. We are seeing a lot of people, 250,000 people already flocking to un schools as a place of shelter but those are also being reportedly hit as well. With no way out and no single safe place, its a very, very difficult time for children in gaza. Very, very difficult time for children in gaza. What are your colleagues children in gaza. What are your colleagues on children in gaza. What are your colleagues on the children in gaza. What are your colleagues on the ground children in gaza. What are yourl colleagues on the ground saying about exactly that, the numbers of children that have been affected and what are your organisation able to currently do with all of this going on . Well, to answer your first question, this is a childrens crisis already and has the potential to get a lot worse. We have seen at least five of their six violations, the worst thing to happen to children, happen on both sides of the border over the last five days and there is the prospect of far worse to come. We cant currently programme in the gaza strip. This is an organisation that has worked there for the last decade and global hotspots, such as the intensity of violence in gaza, we cant operate but we need to be out helping children in gaza. We need to be reuniting children who are being separated from their families, who are being severely injured. Who are needing all sorts of services. You talk about the lack of services. You talk about the lack of electricity and water supply, of food, all of these things will get worse and worse as time goes on in a part of the world that already had 80 of its population dependent on humanitarian aid. Humanitarian aid. Obviously the israelis humanitarian aid. Obviously the lsraelis are humanitarian aid. Obviously the israelis are not humanitarian aid. Obviously the israelis are not letting humanitarian aid. Obviously the israelis are not letting anything| israelis are not letting anything out. How critical is it to establish a humanitarian corridor to get aid in . ,. ,. ,. ,. , a humanitarian corridor to get aid in . ,. ,. ,. ,. , in . Humanitarian corridors tend to only operate in . Humanitarian corridors tend to only operate in in . Humanitarian corridors tend to only operate in wellestablished i only operate in well established conflicts. At the moment we have seen Border Crossing attacks and all sorts of chaos in areas where aid would normally, personnel would normally travel through. It is very difficult to see how we can do that. Whether it is a corridor or more established safe zones or better the Complexion Mechanisms that are allowing agency the safety to know they can operate without losing people, as you havejust they can operate without losing people, as you have just reported. These are all desperately needed and they were needed before this escalation and they will be needed much more so in the hours ahead. What are your people saying about how they themselves hope to operate in the coming days and weeks, when basic things like power even for your teams, they havent got . Everything is hard and i think the notion again of heavy explosives in densely packed urban areas mean off and the environment you are operating in is a very different one on an hour by hour basis. Knowing where children are, what services they need will change depending on whether we do see a Ground Incursion and that will dramatically change how we operate as an agency, i feel, in the days ahead. So there is a lot of need. At the moment, there is a lot of difficulty being able to meet that need. There will be their needs in the months ahead, in terms of support, Financial Support to a humanitarian response in gaza, at which time ukraine, drc are stretching the humanitarian system. Sojohn simpson said himself, its too early to have effective diplomacy but cooler heads and De Escalation is exactly what the children of gaza and southern israel need right now. You children of gaza and southern israel need right now need right now. You started this interview by need right now. You started this interview by just need right now. You started this Interview Byjust describing need right now. You started this| interview by just describing what need right now. That is not happening on a population that in their best placed to handle what we are seeing, essentially. That is something i would urge all your viewers to remember, the context of years of issues facing children there. I think that is the top of our concerns right now. Thank you so much forjoining us live here on bbc news. We are about to take a short break. Just a reminder because we are due to hear from the un secretary general, another appeal from from the un secretary general, another appealfrom him coming in the next half an hour, we think. We are keeping an eye on that. We are keeping an eye on the live pictures coming in all the time from israel and also the picture feeds we were just showing you, James Cleverley just showing you, James Cleverley just running away as those Air Raid Sirens sounded in southern israel. Plenty more headlines here on that, our major story, plenty more headlines here on that, our majorstory, on plenty more headlines here on that, our major story, on bbc news. Hello. For some of us over the last few days, it has felt as if summer has been trying to cling on deep into 0ctober. But autumn is going to be arriving over the next few days. In fact, already feeling quite autumnal in the northern half of the uk. Here some sunshine, but some rather cool air working its way in from the north west. Conversely, South Westerly Winds bringing warm and muggy air down towards the south, and the dividing line between those air masses is this Weather Front bringing some outbreaks of rain across parts of wales, the midlands, into east anglia and lincolnshire. Particularly heavy rain, i think, across parts of west wales with the risk of some flooding and some disruption. To the south of that, often quite murky but warm and humid. Further north, something cooler and fresher. 12 degrees, for example, in aberdeen and glasgow. Some sunshine, scattering of showers, the winds slowly easing a little bit in the north of scotland. Now, overnight, ourweatherfront moves a little bit further southwards and then tends to stall across southern counties of england, parts of wales and the midlands, very mild here, 16 degrees in plymouth overnight. Compare that with two or three degrees for many spots further north. But here, we will see some sunshine to take us into tomorrow morning. A scattering of showers, particularly in the north west of scotland. This band of cloud never really clearing the south of england or south wales. We could see some pockets of rain and drizzle at times. Some warmth trying to cling on here, but for most a cooler feel. 17 degrees there for london, 13 for belfast, 12 degrees in glasgow. But instead of clearing through, that Weather Front actually tries to push northwards again during thursday night into friday, looking very wet for parts of england and wales. At the same time, this cold front pushes its way into scotland and northern ireland. So quite a complex look to the Weather Chart on friday, but we will see some outbreaks of rain, particularly across england and wales. But across scotland and northern ireland, we see sunny spells and some showers. Some of those showers could start to turn wintry over the very highest ground as some colder air starts to dig its way in. And thats the story for the weekend. We finally lose all of these Weather Fronts, all of us get into this cold north westerly wind. If anything, temperatures by day will be a touch below the average for the time of year. And at night, weve got the chance for quite a widespread grass frost. Bye for now. This is bbc news. The headlines. The israeli Prime Minister and Opposition Leader agree to form an Emergency Government to manage the war with hamas. Israel pounds gaza for a fifth day as gazas only Power Station runs out of fuel. Palestinian officals say over a thousand people have been killed 60 per cent of the injured are women and children. Israel says 1200 people are now known to have died in the attacks by hamas as shocking details continue to emerge of a massacre in the kfar aza kibbuttz. Let me bring you
