17 british nationals, including children, are now understood to be dead or missing after the hamas attack on israel. This is the scene live in gaza well have the latest on the escalating conflict. And our team of bbc specialists is here for any questions you have about the Israeli Palestinian conflict. We start in israel and gaza where there has been another night of missile launches and air raids across the border while the prospect of an Israeli Ground invasion appears to be drawing closer. Here are the latest developments. Israel says that more than 1,200 israelis are now known to have been killed, since hamas launched attacks on saturday. 169 of those killed were Israeli Soldiers. The bbc understands 17 british nationals are dead or missing. Palestinian sources say that more than 1,055 people have been killed by israels bombardment of gaza, where entire neighbourhoods have been flattened. Israel has sealed all crossings into gaza. And were getting reports of a large number of Israeli Forces massing at the border. Both sides have accused the other of war crimes in the attacks which began on saturday. Strikes against gaza have continued this morning. This was a blast a couple of hours ago which sent black Smoke Billowing into the sky. This is the scene live in gaza now. The Story Missiles and smoke, that is the harbour on the edge of gaza city. A hamas Spokesman Says at least 30 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in overnight strikes, with residential buildings, factories and mosques among targets hit. Lets show you some pictures now about the scale of destruction in gaza from those air strikes. These images are taken by drone. As you can see the damage is immense with entire buildings reduced to rubble. The scene is deserted. Most people in the area will have been evacuated but there will have been many casualties as well. The palestinians are putting the number of dead at 1055. Earlier this week, israel announced a Siege Of Gaza cutting its supplies of electricity, fuel, and water. People in gaza are seeking shelter in schools and hospitals as israeli jets attack targets. 0ur correspondent in gaza rushdi abualouf. I spoke to him earlier. We are getting reports and we can watch israeli Artillery Fire hitting the coastal side of gaza. Tanks are locating near the border with israel and they shell the western part of the city. About 20, 25 shells landed within the palestinian only fishing harbour. Its on the western side of the city, so about six kilometres or seven kilometres, constant israeli Artillery Fire in this area. In a very worrying sign, i could see few people who get out to shop from a nearby market here. They all flee home because people have very bad memory about Artillery Fire. Back in 2014, when israel started to use the Artillery Fire close to the city, it was followed by a very big incursion. Tell me a little bit about the blockade and what the impact of that is at the moment as well. It must be getting worse. Were hearing that fuel could potentially run out as early as today for gaza. Yes, humanitarian crisis, gaza is in the edge of a humanitarian crisis, according to the Health Minister who issued a statement, a Warning Statement this morning saying that all medical centres will be running out of fuel to run the generators and to do the essential treatment for the about 5,000 people, already half of them are in hospital. They said in 2a hours the hospitals will be running out of fuel and running out of all the essential medicals. Its the fifth day since saturday, and gaza is completely shut from everywhere. The latest shot was egypt closing Rafah Crossing yesterday. But israel, since the first day they cut the Electricity Supplies and they hit most of the companies, that provide internet for the people. So electricity, internet and some parts of the city without water, and there is no food or medicine or water being sent to gaza for the last five days. Humanitarian situation is really in the edge of crisis. I went to a supermarket yesterday. Nearly you couldnt find anything in any shelf of the supermarket. People are really worried and they are moving to shelters within the un schools. Already, about 10 of the population are displaced and un schools, 200,000 palestinians are now sheltering in un schools, with the un also unable to provide the Essential Services for them because israel is not allowing also the United Nations to bring food. The United Nations is supporting, before this crisis, about 100,000 families. They give them food every, every month and they have an arrangement of giving food to people. They said very little, we have tried to distribute this. The local authority here is trying also to manage what is available. We understand that banks are not giving enough cash, only like 100 bucks for each user. The fuel in the fuel station, the gas station only giving the people very small amount of of gas. Even the bakeries are not giving the people what they need. They only give a very small amount of bread for the people. So they are trying to manage what is available, but very soon, if gaza is not supplied by what is needed its going to be a catastrophic situation here. 0ur chief International Correspondent lyse doucet is in ashkelon in israel and she gave me an update on the situation there. We are right on the edge of what is now a closed military zone. Viewers can see behind me the israeli checkpoint. It is a military checkpoint. There has been, all morning, a lot of Military Activity here, the sound of artillery going out, firing into gaza. Gaza is about 3. 5 miles away from us. This is the main road to the gaza wire, but it is now closed, and you can hear the thud, the constant thuds this morning, we have been reporting, and as you have just heard from our correspondent, those are the sounds of artillery going into gaza, night and day. Israel has vowed to do what it takes to destroy the infrastructure of hamas. Unfortunately, it is also laying whole neighbourhoods to waste as well. Weve been seeing many Israeli Military vehicles going past, white buses carrying troops, and there has been, you cant see it from here, but the line of trees here behind it in the past few days, israelis have been massing armour. Some of it has moved down closer to the gaza border, we understand, and more is coming. There is a green highway sign that is a sign of an umbrella, a beach umbrella. This kibbutz used to be a place where tourists and israelis would come to have a nice day out at the beach. Yesterday, on the mediterranean, hamas fighters were able to get very close to it. They penetrated this border again, and there was an exchange of fire. Even now, as israel says, it has regained control of this area, they have had to admit Theyjust Cannot seal it off. Hamas have much more determination to get here. And weve been hearing that 169 Israeli Soldiers have been killed in this war with hamas. The cost and price the Israeli Military are paying is obviously high . Yes, we saw on the road coming from jerusalem down to the south, there are long stretches of road where there are cars lining the road. People are coming, some of the 300,000 reservists who have been called up, they get here with the car, they shut the door, they get the gun, and they come down here to be part of the preparations for what is believed to be an inevitable Ground Incursion in gaza. It is a highly risky operation. It is one that, for decades, israeli leaders including Benjamin Netanyahu have avoided. Given that death toll of Israeli Soldiers and civilians, ive been covering these conflicts since the 1990s, meaning many wars and confrontations, and we have never seen the Israeli Death toll so high. Yet again, a very high and rising Palestinian Death toll. We are not even one week into this crisis. The United Nations are saying that the number of palestinians who have been displaced inside gaza, trying to flee for their lives, although nowhere is safe, has now reached the maximum of what had been a 50 day operation in 2014. In just a few days, it has surpassed that number. Israel has called up 300,000 reservists to join its front line troops. Tanks and other heavy Military Equipment are massing near gaza some have also been deployed to the northern border with lebanon, where there have been exchanges of gunfire across the border. The un has called for the laws of war to be upheld which would include the release of hostages, and the protection of civilians. We can speak now to the military analystjustin crump. He is the ceo of Strategic Risk Consultancy Firm sibylline and a former british army officer. Good to talk to and armoury. Just by the gerson border. What would a Ground Assault looked like the think . , Ground Assault looked like the think . , Ground Assault looked like the think . , think . Gaza is an immensely challenging think . Gaza is an immensely challenging operating think . Gaza is an immensely challenging Operating Environment for the modern military. The closest barrel i can probably draw as a siege of mosul. It took six months. The level of damage sustained to the city was huge. That location in iraq, the ability to take civilians away from the fighting. They could bring iraqis through the lines under way, just leaving isis in control of the city which made it easier to operate comparatively. Whereas Gaza Theissue operate comparatively. Whereas gaza the issue is, where can the population go . There is the option of age at being discussed but they are probably not willing to let people into its territory from gaza. Also that will potentially allow people to exit straight from hamas and that is not what the israelis want at this point. Very challenging to actually operate and challenging strategically to secure the territory effectively and be able to let people out in any way. So although there is open space and gather it is hugely densely populated with two or three very large urban areas and we have seen the level of damage they have sustained already. That is a terrible Operating Environment for the attacker. Hence the idf i think very clear and the result but very clear that they will probably have to take a lot of casualties to conduct this operation. To take a lot of casualties to conduct this operation. How likely would it be conduct this operation. How likely would it be they conduct this operation. How likely would it be they would conduct this operation. How likely would it be they would actually i conduct this operation. How likely. Would it be they would actually end p would it be they would actually end up fulfilling what they want to do, to destroy hamas . Up fulfilling what they want to do, to destroy hamas . Again hamas has the advantage to destroy hamas . Again hamas has the advantage of to destroy hamas . Again hamas has the advantage of handy to destroy hamas . Again hamas has the advantage of handy hiding to destroy hamas . Again hamas has the advantage of handy hiding in to destroy hamas . Again hamas has the advantage of handy hiding in the| the advantage of handy hiding in the sewing population, in that dense urban terrain. It is something i have always taken advantage of. Although there are clear areas in gaza that can be used by the Israeli Military to surround the city in gaza itself, does not a contiguous area, just high rise buildings and some people think, still it is very difficult then to go into those areas to targets and there is a limited market of hamas targets israel can identify and engage, what is interesting in this situation is the use of hostages by hamas. I think they have co created that having these hostages will slow the israeli response. Ithink having these hostages will slow the israeli response. I think in terms of the casualties we have seen so far, the normal equation of israel of recovering hostages has probably gone out the window. The sheer level of casualties, of atrocities in Southern Israel and the shock to the israelis is so high that i think actually the hostages being used to slow the operation is something that probably is not going to work in the way hamas may have thought when they took them and i think they itjust underscores the level of aggression israel was to bring to bear but it is usually challenging to achieve that end. Definitely there is that desire for vengeance and both sides of said the intent of this is the postings once and for all. For both sides that is immensely challenging. I think israel considering very carefully at the moment exactly how to proceed to try and minimise their casualties and achieve maximal effects upon hamas but i cant understate the level of effects upon hamas but i cant understate Understtea Thelel of Challenge Effects upon hamas but i cant understate Understtea Thelel of challenge to effects upon hamas but i cant understate the level of challenge to actually achieve that here. We understate the level of challenge to actually achieve that here. Actually achieve that here. We have been hearing actually achieve that here. We have been hearing from actually achieve that here. We have been hearing from our actually achieve that here. We have i been hearing from our correspondence on the ground at lyse doucet on the ground in israel that there still have been a few minor incursions into israel by hamas militants including paragliders as well. Yes. Hamas obviously including paragliders as well. 1a; hamas obviously showing a including paragliders as well. 123 hamas obviously showing a level of ingenuity and resolve that hasnt always been apparent in the past. 0ne always been apparent in the past. One of the things that go to zero by surprise i think on saturday morning and some say still at large within Southern Israel although they have closed down the majority of areas that are attacked, obviously a lot of people came from gaza and an are attempting to still obviously calls casualties amongst the Israeli Soldiers and civilians and so on in Southern Israel and of course also have to at west bank and the risk of further outbreaks of violence which obviously hamas wanted to inspire and of course a few incidents over the northern border, all very low level but the course a very team because i on that as well and caters in isolation from hezbollah and its allies in lebanon and syria. A lot of things happening away from gaza itself still and that is a pattern that will probably continue even while the idf is mainly focused on this potentially huge operation for a Ground Incursion into gaza. Goad a Ground Incursion into gaza. Good to talk to yon a Ground Incursion into gaza. Good to talk to you. Thank a Ground Incursion into gaza. Good to talk to you. Thank you. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. The labour leader sir keir starmer says he is prepared to bulldoze Planning Rules to get more homes built in england. Speaking to the bbc on the final day of the Labour Party Conference sir keir also said his party would fund £1. 5 billion of nhs reforms by ending the non dom tax status. The independent Monitoring Board at Wandsworth Prison has found that a severe shortage of available staff is undermining efforts to run the jail effectively. It also found that years of underinvestment in the site had led to an unsafe environment. A spokesperson said Decisive Action had already been taken to address the issues at the prison. And a survey suggests theres a growing gap between the number of girls in england who enjoy school pe lessons, compared with boys. 59 of girls in Secondary School said they liked pe compared with 84 of boys. The charity behind the survey Youth Sport Trust say the figures should raise alarm bells. Youre live with bbc news. The Israeli Military has now sealed all israeli borders with gaza and the Rafah Crossing, which leads from gaza into egypt, has been hit by israeli air strikes. An egyptian Human Rights Group said that has led to The Crossing Being Closed though that has not been confirmed by officials. Israel has launched several thousand air strikes against gaza saying it is targeting only hamas. These pictures show the destruction of entire districts. Earlier i spoke to ghassan abu sittah, a british palestinian doctor based in london who has gone to help in gaza. I got here on monday and was, initially came down for the first day. Was not able to get to the hospital because of the continuous bombing. Managed to get here yesterday morning and since then, the hospitals completely overwhelmed. The compound of the hospital, gazas largest hospital, has become a refugee camp, thousands of families are seeking refuge inside the compound of the hospital to try to escape the bombing and try to find a safe place, and the hospital itself, gazas largest trauma hospital, is at capacity. The beds are full with patients who have been injured and the continuous stream of injuries has not stopped. The area around the hospital is being continuously bombed and we can hear the shelling all the time and this morning, when i was in the Operating Room, the building shook from what looks like a nearby area that had been targeted by the israelis. Talk me through some of the stories, some of the victims, the people you have been seeing, children in particular who are coming through the doors of the hospital. Well, early hours of the morning, i had to take this six or seven year old child, a beautiful young girl, to the Operating Room with horrific facial injuries. Her mother, who is also a doctor at the hospital, had been killed and herfather is injordan visiting. Last night, my last patient that i took to the Operating Room, half of his face was missing. He was around ten or 11. Large defect in his left axilla which needed reconstruction. His face needed reconstruction. It took us four hours just to get through the surgery. I have a 14 Year Old Girl with 70 burns. We have a lot of children with burn injuries. Shrapnel injuries. Usually, all of gazas wars, 30 to 40 of the wounded are children and this war is no different. When you target homes in a place with children, you are going to get injured children and these kids are all being injured inside their homes. The Israeli Military say they are targeting hamas targets, what do you say to that . In the two days i have been around the hospital, ive not seen any men of fighting age, all ive seen are women and children and elderly patients who are being taken out from underneath the rubble in their homes. My family home that i went to when i got into gaza, which we had to evacuate within an hour of arriving, is in a residential area. That whole area is now pulverised, the house is badly damaged because of all of the masonry from the surrounding buildings that were targeted by the israelis. The israelis are doing what they did in 1982 in beirut when they besieged beirut, they are taking gaza one neighbourhood at a time and just completely destroying that neighbourhood and the following day, moving to another one or two neighbourhoods and just taking it a block at a time and maximising all of the damage. Ive never seen rows upon rows of buildings just all destroyed methodically and systematically. A london based doctor who was gone into gaza to help talking me a little earlier. Here in the uk, all flights at Luton Airport have been suspended until the afternoon after a huge fire ripped through a Terminal Car Park on tuesday evening. The fire at a multistorey caused the building to suffer a significa nt structural colla pse. About 1,500 vehicles may have been in the car park and subsequently damaged. Four firefighters and an Airport Staff member were taken to hospital. Speaking in the past hour, the Chief Fire Officer at bedfordshire fire and rescue service, andy hopkinson, gave an update on the situation. No reports of any injuries to the public. Four of my firefighters were were treated for mild Smoke Inhalation but theyve all been discharged and a fifth member of the airport team was also treated. But theyre all fine. So as you can see, you know, its a very large building. And, you know, we have been able to protect a number of vehicles within the building itself. Obviously the airport has suspended flights and were not expecting the flights to resume until at least 3pm this afternoon. I would advise that any travellers affected should contact their airline, but anyone with a car in any of these car parks should check the Luton Airport website about what to do. But our focus is very much trying to get the airport reopened as quickly as possible. Its very much been a Multi Agency Response and id really like to pay tribute to my blue Light Partners and local Resilience Forum partners who have worked tirelessly through the night. But id like to pay a particular tribute to the firefighters whove been working on scene and our Control Staff and colleagues from buckinghamshire, cambridgeshire, hertfordshire, northamptonshire. And this morning weve been joined by colleagues from london fire brigade. Im happy to take any questions. One other point. The cause of the fire, we have, obviously, its still a very early stage, but weve got no intelligence to suggest it was anything other than an accidental fire that started in one of the vehicles that had arrived, you know, around the time that the incident was reported to us. If you want more Understory Page which is being updated with all latest information the airport. I want to take you to gaza. This is the live picture of the harbour at gaza city. We are hearing in the last hour or so from the palestinian authorities that feel in gaza will run out from only Power Station in some point today. We also know there are no supplies of fuel or food or water going into gaza where 2. 2 million are living. People there are seeking shelter and we are hearing in schools now and hospitals, as well as un centres as jets from israel fly overhead and drop missiles. Meanwhile in israel, the death toll from the hamas attackers reached 1200, more than 1200 people have died in israel. We are hearing also a number of those, about 169 apparently, our Israeli Soldiers. We are also hearing the other end of the country that i have been exchanges of fire between israel and hezbollah in Southern Lebanon as well. One more line to bring you from the uk authorities, they have told the bbc they believe 17 uk nationals are missing or dead in israel and that number has gone up from 10 we told you earlier. That is a live picture in gaza. We will leave that for now because i want to let you know. Coming up at 1138 bst well bejoined by a our middle east analyst Sebastian Usher and from jerusalem our correspondent tom bateman. Theyll be here to answer your questions live. So get in touch using the Hashtag Bbcyourquestions or email yourquestions bbc. Co. Uk stay with us here on bbc news. Hello. The weather will be feeling much more autumnal for many of us over the next couple of days. Weve had that warm air mass with us. But if we look at whats happening with the air mass, it is going to be clearing towards the south, so gradually over the next few days, some colder air into the north. A brief spell of warmer weather again towards the south. But by the end of the week, we are all in the cooler, fresher conditions. Three bands of weather today, mostly dry, fairly mild in the far south. This area of rain at times through the central swathe of the uk, and windy with sunshine and showers further north. So the showers quite frequent across the north west of scotland, gales developing up towards the northern isles, but some sunshine for Northern Ireland into the likes of northumberland and cumbria as well. Theres that Heavy Rain Sitting across wales in particular. There could be some flooding impacts. Now to the south of the area of rain, 22, 23 degrees possible once again, whereas further north were looking at temperatures between about 10 to 18. So still some contrast in temperature out there. The Weather Front will bring its rain a bit further south into the evening hours through the midlands, east anglia. And eventually therell be a few spots of rain into Southern England through this evening and tonight too. But under the clearer skies further north, could be A Touch Of Frost around for parts of northern england, perhaps Northern Ireland as well. But were Still Holding onto a mild night with a lot of low cloud and drizzle in the south. Thats how we start thursday, a real north south split. Sunshine for scotland, Northern Ireland, northern england, too. Further south across england and wales weve got more cloud and outbreaks of rain. Theyre going to be quite light and patchy i think through the day on thursday, but it will be a bit of a damp day, some low cloud, some murkiness still quite breezy in the north, but not as windy as today. And a really different feeling day in terms of temperature, 10 to 17 degrees, our top temperature tomorrow afternoon. Looking towards the latter part of the week, this is into friday, weve got a couple of Weather Fronts around, so we could well see some spells of fairly heavy, persistent rain, particularly for parts of england and wales, i think, on friday. Some showers moving in across parts of scotland in that cooler air as well. But despite the rain in the south and the breezy conditions, its going to be quite mild. Weve got the flow of air coming in from the southwest. So again, 20 degrees or so towards the london area, but a different story, about ten degrees cooler than that, but more sunshine across the northwest. Then into the weekend, it looks like most of the showers clear away. So a predominantly dry picture, but look at those temperatures. They are much cooler than weve seen of late. Bye bye. Us Treasury Secretary janet yellen says that, at this point, shes not seeing attacks on israel as a major impact on the economy. Welcome to World Business report, im ben thompson. Economies around the world are assessing the potential fallout of the conflict between israel and gaza. First up, the us Treasury Secretary janet yellen. She says she continues to expect the us economy to have a soft landing, even though the fighting poses significant additional risks
