Dead or missing after the hamas attack on israel. This is the scene live in gaza well have the latest on the escalating conflict. In other news, all flights at London Luton Airport have been suspended until this afternoon after a fire caused the collapse of a multistorey car park. The Israeli Military has now sealed all israeli borders with gaza and the rafah crossing, which leads from gaza into egypt, has been hit by israeli air strikes. An egyptian Human Rights Group said that has led to The Crossing Being Closed though that has not been confirmed by officials. Israel has launched several thousand air strikes against gaza saying it is targeting only hamas. These pictures show the destruction of entire districts. Earlier i spoke to ghassan abu sittah, a british palestinian doctor based in london who has gone to help in gaza. I got here on monday and was initially came down for the first day. Was not able to get to the hospital because of the continuous bombing. Managed to get here yesterday morning and since then, the hospitals completely overwhelmed. The compound of the hospital, gazas largest hospital has become a refugee camp, thousands of families are seeking refuge inside the compound at the hospital to try to escape the bombing and try to find a safe place and the hospital itself, gazas most largest trauma hospital, is at capacity. The beds are full with patients who have been injured and the continuous stream of injuries has not stopped. The area around the hospital is being continuously bombed and we can hear the shelling all the time and this morning, when i was in the Operating Room, the building shook from what looks like a nearby area that had been targeted by the israelis. Talk me through some of the stories, some of the victims, the people you have been seeing, children in particular who are coming through the doors of the hospital. Well, early hours of the morning, i had to take this six or seven year old child, a beautiful young girl, to the Operating Room with horrific facial injuries. Her mother, who is also a doctor at the hospital, had been killed and herfather is injordan visiting. Last night, my last patient that i took to the Operating Room, half of his face was missing. He was around ten or ii. Large defect in his left axilla which needed reconstruction. His face needed reconstruction. It took us four hours just to get through the surgery. I have a 14 Year Old Girl with 70 burns. We have a lot of children with burn injuries. Shrapnel injuries. Usually, all of gazas wars, 30 to 40 of the wounded are children and this war is no different. When you target homes in a place with children, you are going to get injured children and these kids are all being injured inside their homes. The Israeli Military say they are targeting hamas targets, what do you say to that . In the two days i have been around the hospital, ive not seen any men of fighting age, all ive seen are women and children and elderly patients who are being taken out from underneath the rubble in their homes. My family home that i went to when i got into gaza, which we had to evacuate within an hour of arriving, is in a residential area. That whole area is now pulverised, the house is badly damaged because of all of the masonry from the surrounding buildings that were targeted by the israelis. The israelis are doing what they did in 1982 in beirut when they besieged beirut, they are taking gaza one neighbourhood at a time and just completely destroying that neighbourhood and the following day, moving to another one or two neighbourhoods and just taking its blocks at a time and maximising all of the damage. Ive never seen rows upon rows of buildings just all destroyed methodically and systematically. What are your needs now . What are the urgent needs of the hospital, of you yourself, of those working within those Health Centres in gaza . You know, we are on the 15th year of this medieval siege against gaza and the Health System was on its knees to begin with. With over 4,500 wounded, the system is already depleted. We are already short of consumables, medication, equipment and unless there is a humanitarian corridor, unless aid is brought in, the diesel that operates the generators that the hospital depends on is going to run out. And the consumables that you need for the day to day management of these kinds of complex and devastating wounds are going to run out. I dont understand how the world has decided to spend any concept of International Humanitarian law, any concept of Human Rights Law and allow this collective punishment of 2. 5 million people. How are you feeling yourself, have you been working the clock . I am tired and just overwhelmed with the number and ferocity of the bombing and the types of injuries that are coming. I mean, itjust breaks your heart. These kids have had their lives permanently altered by these injuries. These families are being destroyed. You know, you speak to members of staff in the hospital, they have either lost homes, loved ones, we have a colleague in the Plastic Surgery department who has lost his house, his wife and young kids are at his in laws. Another one of the young surgeons has lost his brother in law. Who was killed in the building that was hit. So, its just. The ferocity of it. And the fact that we are only on day four, thats the shocking thing. Ive been to gazas previous wars and ive been to damascus and to yemen, the firepower that the israelis have available to them make the destruction on a scale that nobody else has seen before. How worried are you about a Ground Assault by the Israeli Defence forces . The israelis have openly talked about the fact that there are no red lines and that they will carry out this punishment on the people in gaza regardless. And unless the International Community stop this, we are looking at a continuation of this current massacre and an escalation on a scale that nobody has seen before. In 82, when the israelis invaded lebanon and besieged beirut they killed 30,000 and at the end of that siege, when they redrew, they allowed their allies to go into the palestinian camps and slaughter another 3,500 people. The israelis seem to be in the same mindset. A london based doctor who was gone into gaza to help talking me a little earlier. Israels Defence Minister says its military is now moving towards a full scale offensive against gaza, in response to the massacres of civilians by hamas gunmen. The military says it has been recovering the bodies of whole families, including children, following an attack by hamas in one israeli village. The israel Defence Forces say more than 1,200 israelis have been killed since saturday. Palestinian Health Officials say at least 950 people in gaza have lost their lives. Lets get more on this from daniel levy. He is the president of the u. S. Middle east project and is a former israeli negotiator. Daniel, good to talk to you. We have seen obviously things are starting to escalate, there is a potential, strong potential, for a Ground Offensive by israel. What are your thoughts on where heading now. Thank ou. I thoughts on where heading now. Thank yom i wouldnt thoughts on where heading now. Thank you. I wouldnt get thoughts on where heading now. Thank you. I wouldnt get too thoughts on where heading now. maria; you. I wouldnt get too focused on Ground Offensive, yes or no. 0ne imagines that will come in time but the destruction and devastation we are already seeing in gaza is quite enough to, i hope, shake the complacency that we have seen from the west in terms of giving israel Carte Blanche to conduct what looks like premeditated war crimes. Now, the appalling images and casualties on the israeli side, what was done over the weekend, thats a war crime. Heaping one on top of the other, thats the appalling thing about war and thats why it should be avoided. But war also is conducted according to International Law and that line needs to be drawn very, very clearly but what weve seen is an absolute willingness to tell israel on the part of its allies, do your worst. And that is going to lead to a further escalation and the painful thing is that the failure of politics to offer a different way over the last ten, 15, 30, all these decades of occupation is now being compounded in ways that we are seeing hourly on your screen. But in ways that we are seeing hourly on your screen your screen. But the Israelis Would Sa , your screen. But the Israelis Would Say. Look. Your screen. But the Israelis Would Say. Look. These type of lice cannot be allowed to pass. When you tell yourself a lie, it leads to a wrong policy. If anybody told me that what the militants did on the weekend was a legitimate response to years and years of occupation, i would say, no, youre wrong headed, youve lost sight of humanity and reality. If anyone tells me that what israel is doing in gaza today is a legitimate response to what happened on the weekend, its exactly the same. And weekend, its exactly the same. You know the old adage. If i was trying to get there, i wouldnt start here. And if i was trying to get to security for israelis and palestinians, if i was trying to actually reach peace then i wouldnt start from where we are right now, not from where we are at 6am saturday morning. Every opportunity of quiet and lets just be very clear, israel has had this kind of relationship with hamas in the decade and a half that hamas has controlled the gaza strip and there have been periods of agreed ceasefires and greater calm and there have been periods of great escalation. But whenever there was a calm, one didnt look neither to a political package with hamas, nor to a political package with the other side of the palestinian political divide to recognise israel, who gave up divide to recognise israel, who gave up armed struggle, come to the negotiating table, pursued that route. 0n Neitherfront was negotiating table, pursued that route. 0n neither front was the approach taken that lets come back to adhering to International Law, address the root causes, the fact that while life is normal for israelis most days, life is always of normal for palestinians under occupation and lets actually deal with palestinians getting their rights. Did people used to say how can we possibly sit down with the people who bombed the Tory Party Conference . You sit down with people. Hamas is a Political Movement that does terrible things, but thats precisely who need to negotiate with because they also do politics and unlike isis, they are embedded in their community and you need to bring in those people and you can and the Israeli Security establishment knows that you can. They are lying. They know that you can deal with them, but they dont want to because they want to continue to occupy the palestinians and to deny them their rights and until that fundamental question is addressed, nobody there will have security. Let me just take you, i dont know if you heard that while daniel talking, huge explosion in the background. We were keeping an eye on it, as were you on the screen. This isjust by on it, as were you on the screen. This is just by the harbour in gaza city and you can see that big Missile Strikes have hit buildings, i dont know what theyve hit because they are hidden by buildings in front of them but you can see the very thick black smoke coming up from there. We have heard now from the Gaza Health Ministry in the last few minutes and they say that 1055 palestinians have been killed and 5184 have been wounded in israeli strikes. Thats the latest figures that we are getting from the Palestinian Health ministry. We will bring you more on that, of course, later. Israel only took back full control of the territory in Southern Israel which had been over run by hamas gunmen, on tuesday morning. The Israeli Military says more than 1,500 hamas militants were killed they are still recovering the bodies of hundreds of israeli civilians and servicemen and women who died. Our international Editorjeremy Bowen spoke to some of the Israeli Armed forces about what had happened. How difficult was the fighting . You cannot imagine. Have you ever had to do anything like this before as a soldier . Not like this. What happens next . What do you do next . What does israel do next . I dont know. I will do what they tell me to do. I will do. I hope that we will go inside. Into gaza . Yeah. Thats going to be tough fighting. The murder of Israeli Citizens here was without doubt a war crime, but what about the palestinian citizens they were killing on the attacks on hamas . As you know, all armies have obligations under Ward Laws Of War to protect civilian life, even in war zones. Are you doing this with this level of air strikes that are going on at the moment and any Ground Operation that might happen . Im sure that we fight for our own value, in our culture, in our life. You fight with value and you keep your value in the same time and i know that we will be very aggressive and very strong, but we keep our moral and our value. We are israeli, we are jewish and you know, war is very difficult. Lots of problems, people that stay in the battlefield suffer a lot, you can see what is happening here. But we come to kill enemy, not civilians. With violence already having killed thousands on both sides, a number of countries have announced or launched operations to repatriate their nationals. Among them is australia, which has organised two special flights on friday and sunday to bring back citizens from israel. The move was announced by the countrys Prime Minister anthony albanese. My government will begin the assisted of australians who want to leave israel. We understand that many australians are experiencing difficulties with delays and cancellations with commercial flights. For australians who do not already have plans to leave through commercial options, Australian Government assisted Departure Flights will depart from friday. Ian parmeter is a Research Scholar at the centre for arab and islamic studies at Australian National university in canberra he gave us his thoughts on the latest developments in the middle east. At this stage an invasion, Land Invasion of gaza by very large Israeli Forces is inevitable. Its very clear that the Prime Minister, benjamin netanyahu, cannot allow the situation to return to the status quo antic whereby hamas survives. Its very evident from the reports of bombings of areas where they think the hamas leadership might be, that their aim is to decapitate hamas if they can. Now, we dont know how successful they might be in that, but there is another aspect that will affect the timing, i think, of the invasion, which i think is going to be over the next few days. Netanyahu appears to be trying to put together a government of national unity, which would involve members of the opposition, particularly yair lapid and benny gantz, joining the government over the period of this emergency. And i think his reason for doing that is that he knows that in order to send troops into gaza, is going to be fraught with danger, there will inevitably be a lot of israeli lives lost, and he wantsjoint ownership of that. He wants to be to be sure that all political representatives in the parliament are agreeing and behind such a decision, so that if there are repercussions because of the numbers of Israeli Soldiers who are killed or harmed, it will be a joint responsibility. I have no doubt that israel, and im sure with american help, will be using every intelligence resource within gaza at their disposal to try to pinpoint the locations of these hostages. That, of course, is part of the danger of going in by land and also part of the danger of air bombardments. Part of the building collapsed and the airport has asked passengers on departing flights to stay away and check with their airline before turning up. 0ur reporter Greg Mckenzie has more. Oh, my god huge flames and smoke billowing from the terminal 2 car park. Many hundreds of people who were inside the airport awaiting to board flights were told to leave immediately. There was this massive gout of flame that shot across the car park like a flame thrower. Er. So. And then cars were just exploding. So every few minutes, you just got another one another explosion, another explosion. Ten fire engines attended the blaze, which was still burning into the early hours. A member of the public and six firefighters suffered from Smoke Inhalation as the car park fire spread. In an overnight statement, the airport confirmed the partial collapse of the car park, and told passengers that all flights would be suspended until midday. Some confusion here this morning many passengers trapped on the runway for hours, many of them onlyjust now being allowed to get off that plane and away from the airport. We were just told, more or less, leave they werent too sure if we did leave, would we get out . My cars in the car park and we literally are just stranded here on this roundabout. I want to get home. Got work in the morning like everyone else. Access to the airport is currently restricted, and people are being advised to check with their airlines before travelling to luton this morning. Obviously, the airport has suspended flights and we are not expecting the flights to resume until at least 3pm this afternoon. Im back at the top of the hour. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello. The weather will be feeling much more autumnal for many of us over the next couple of days. Weve had that warm air mass with us. But if we look at whats happening with the air mass, it is going to be clearing towards the south, so gradually over the next few days, some colder air into the north. A brief spell of warmer weather again towards the south. But by the end of the week, we are all in the cooler, fresher conditions. Three bands of weather today, mostly dry, fairly mild in the far south. This area of rain at times through the central swathe of the uk, and windy with sunshine and showers further north. So the showers quite frequent across the north west of scotland, gales developing up towards the northern isles, but some sunshine for Northern Ireland into the likes of northumberland and cumbria as well. Theres that Heavy Rain Sitting across wales in particular. There could be some flooding impacts. Now to the south of the area of rain, 22, 23 degrees possible once again, whereas further north were looking at temperatures between about 10 to 18. So still some contrast in temperature out there. The Weather Front will bring its rain a bit further south into the evening hours through the midlands, east anglia. And eventually therell be a few spots of rain into Southern England through this evening and tonight too. But under the clearer skies further north, could be A Touch Of Frost around for parts of northern england, perhaps Northern Ireland as well. But were Still Holding onto a mild night with a lot of low cloud and drizzle in the south. Thats how we start thursday, a real north south split. Sunshine for scotland, Northern Ireland, northern england, too. Further south across england and wales weve got more cloud and outbreaks of rain. Theyre going to be quite light and patchy i think through the day on thursday, but it will be a bit of a damp day, some low cloud, some murkiness still quite breezy in the north, but not as windy as today. And a really different feeling day in terms of temperature, 10 to 17 degrees, our top temperature tomorrow afternoon. Looking towards the latter part of the week, this is into friday, weve got a couple of Weather Fronts around, so we could well see some spells of fairly heavy, persistent rain, particularly for parts of england and wales, i think, on friday. Some showers moving in across parts of scotland in that cooler air as well. But despite the rain in the south and the breezy conditions, its going to be quite mild. Weve got the flow of air coming in from the southwest. So again, 20 degrees or so towards the london area, but a different story, about ten degrees cooler than that, but more sunshine across the northwest. Then into the weekend, it looks like most of the showers clear away. So a predominantly dry picture, but look at those temperatures. They are much cooler than weve seen of late. Bye bye. Live from london, this is bbc news. Entire neighbourhoods of gaza have been flattened by the latest air strikes from israel. Around a thousand people have been killed. Doctors are struggling to cope. I had to take this six or seven year old child, a beautiful young girl to the Operating Room, with horrific facial injuries. Her mother, who is also a doctor at the hospital had been killed. While in israel, the military says 1200 people are now known to have died in the attacks by hamas gunmen on israeli soil.
