Israels Defence Minister says its military is now moving towards a full scale offensive against gaza, in response to the massacres of civilians by hamas gunmen. The military says it has been recovering the bodies of whole families, including several children, following an attack by hamas in one Israeli Village. The Israeli Defence forces say more than 1,200 israelis have been killed since saturday. Palestinian Health Officials say more than 900 people in gaza have lost their lives. 0ur correspondent nick beake has the latest. Siren wails. The israeli city of ashkelon. Explosion. Has been hit by a stream of rockets overnight. Many were intercepted mid flight by air defences. Theyd been fired from inside gaza, a few miles to the south. Nearby, Israeli Forces have been seizing back control and moving into communities that hamas had attacked. This is kfar aza, where soldiers say theyve uncovered atrocities including the murder of mothers and their children. They have Justjihad Machine to kill everybody. Without weapons, without nothing. Just normal citizens that want to take their breakfast, and thats all. And they kill them. Its aggressive thing to see, its very difficult to see it. But we must remember who is the enemy, and what our mission. Our mission is thejustice were in the right side and all the world needs to be behind us. Israel says those who did this will pay the heaviest price. And this is their latest response. The bombardment of gaza continues, israeli strikes hitting palestinian communities. Israels military released this footage showing its operations. It says its targeting hamas fighters. Hundreds of civilians have been killed. Israel is committed to the security of its citizens, to their safety and well being, both when they are attacked by murderous and cruel Human Monsters and when they are kidnapped and taken prisoners by them. The resistance the israeli troops will encounter is likely to be fierce. Hamas will be preparing to meet in advance. The prospect is of even more bloodshed in this part of the middle east. More than 2700 israelis have been wounded and one spokesman this morning talks about sustaining extremely serious casualty numbers. As you saw in my report, the city of ashkelon faced that the stream of missiles coming in overnight. It does seem from the footage that a lot disintegrated in mid air. At the same time, the bombardment, the israeli bombardment of gaza continues and officials are saying that in the past 2a hours their fighterjets have hit a50 targets. Of fighterjets have hit a50 targets. Of those, 200 were in one specific part of gaza city and that is because they say the hamas operation over the weekend was focused there and they are going for the people behind that. But as we have been seen, many civilians in gaza, many palestinians have lost their lives. The latest from Health Officials in the city there say that more than 900 people have been killed, and in terms of the wounded, more than a600. That is the latest picture from here. As i was saying in my report, the officials in terms of the military here are saying it is not a question of when, of if they go into gaza, it is when, and the preparations are well under way. We have seen from that incursion in the south of israel into gaza itself. We can see the south of israel into gaza itself. We can see the road behind you looking busy. Certainly there has been nothing we have heard. We have been in this particular city. Strikes have reached here previously from gaza and there is also the case in jerusalem, but i think there is a collective sense of people knowing that they will be some sort of further action in gaza itself and the thing that is interesting is that so many people here have to do military service, so even if you are not in the army all the time, a lot of families are aware they may be called up for active duty in the days and weeks to come. Thank you very much the first plane carrying us Military Supplies has arrived in israel, according to local authorities. President biden said hed make sure the country had everything it needed to defend itself against attacks by hamas. He described the assault as an act of sheer evil. So in this moment, we must be crystal clear. We stand with israel. And we will make sure it has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself, and respond to this attack. Theres no justification for terrorism. Theres no excuse. We will of course keep you up to date but now more todays news. We start with a dramatic story here. All flights have been suspended at Luton Airport after a huge fire caused one of its multi storey car parks to partially collapse. Five people have been taken to hospital for treatment for Smoke Inhalation. Greg mckenzie reports. Oh, my god huge flames and smoke billowing from the terminal two car park. Many hundreds of people who were inside the airport awaiting to board flights were told to leave immediately. There was this massive gout of flame that shot across the car park like a flame thrower. Er. So. And then cars were just exploding. So every few minutes, you just got another one another explosion, another explosion. Ten fire engines attended the blaze, which was still burning into the early hours. A member of the public and six firefighters suffered from Smoke Inhalation as the car park fire spread. In an overnight statement, the airport confirmed the partial collapse of the car park, and told passengers that all flights would be suspended until midday. Some confusion here this morning many passengers trapped on the runway for hours, many of them onlyjust now being allowed to get off that plane and away from the airport. We were just told, more or less, leave they werent too sure if we did leave, would we get out . My cars in the car park and we literally are just stranded here on this roundabout. I want to get home. Got work in the morning like everyone else. Access to the airport is currently restricted, and people are being advised to check with their airlines before travelling to luton this morning. Our reporter Greg Mckenzie joins us now from luton. Tell us, as far as this morning is concerned, what is the latest . Well, aood concerned, what is the latest . Well, good morning concerned, what is the latest . Well, good morning. The concerned, what is the latest . Well, good morning. The latest concerned, what is the latest . Well, good morning. The latest is concerned, what is the latest . Ii good morning. The latest is there will be no planes arriving or leaving from here at Luton Airport before midday. That is what the airport have confirmed. There will be no flights here until midday and beyond and the advice is to keep checking with your airline because a lot of the airlines are using other airports, such as stansted, to redirect flights that were meant to leave from luton this morning. Just behind me is some of the fire crews, still at the scene, and the car park is still smouldering. Although the fire is out, you can seejust behind me, smouldering building, really. No more passengers left inside the airport. They were evacuated in the early hours of the morning. Many were stranded, saying the airlines had simply dumped them. That is a quote from the passengers i spoke to on the motorway you saw in that report a short time ago. There is an investigation. Multiple investigations, the airport are investigating and so i the fire service as to how this fire started and why it was able to spread so quickly because the car park that took ablaze is quite new, about a year and a half old, so lots of questions being raised this morning. For now, thank you very much indeed. We will go back to Greg Mckenzie throughout the morning and get more details. The Labour Party Conference comes to an end today. Sir keir starmer s speech was briefly interrupted yesterday after a protestor poured glitter all over him. You have probably seen the pictures. Our chief Political Correspondent Henry Zeffman is in liverpool for us this morning. Henry, i suppose a lot of people will have seen those pictures, the important thing for the labour party, for keir starmer, is they are also listening to his political message. It also listening to his political message also listening to his political messaue. ,. Message. It was an utterly chaotic be. Innin message. It was an utterly chaotic beginning keir message. It was an utterly chaotic beginning Keir Starmers message. It was an utterly chaotic beginning Keir Starmers big message. It was an utterly chaotic. Beginning Keir Starmers big speech. In the whole i think there was bewilderment at how this man had managed to get so close to the leader of the labour party, who has round the clock security, by the way. And then also at what he was actually protesting in favour of, seems to be proportional representation and a different way of doing politics, not that he seemed to have got his argument across favourably for the people in the hall, who were pretty angry with him. Once keir starmer got going, having taken his jacket off and brushed a bit of glitter off his shoulders, his speech went down incredibly well in the hall. I think better than any of the other speeches he has given in his time as labour party leader. And, look, there was not some torrent of policy, which some people had been urging him to offer, but what there was was an argument about why he wants to be Prime Minister and how a country would be different if he became Prime Minister. He talked about how the british people have had a difficult few years and have you thought he could heal, his words, healthe you thought he could heal, his words, heal the divisions that have opened up in the uk. Keir starmer keeps saying no complacency will stop yes, they are well ahead of the conservatives in the polls that are taking nothing for granted. Im sure thatis taking nothing for granted. Im sure that is true in his case. But wandering around the conference last night, didnt take a few questions for me with most i was talking to for me with most i was talking to for them to admit to me they really do think that labour is headed for government. Look, the election is not tomorrow, it is not next month. It might not even be in a year, it could be quite late next year or perhaps even injanuary could be quite late next year or perhaps even in january 2025, could be quite late next year or perhaps even injanuary 2025, the latest possible time it could be. There is a long way left to go, but the labour partys optimism has completely transformed from when keir starmer became leader three and a half years ago and they really do think they are on track for government. The independent Monitoring Board at Wandsworth Prison has found that a severe shortage of available staff is undermining efforts to run the jail effectively. The board drew its conclusions before the alleged escape by Daniel Khalife last month. The survey by the recruitment and Employment Confederation indicates that the Labour Market is slowing down after a period of very low unemployment following the pandemic. The tv presenter Holly Willoughby has announced she is quitting the itv show this morning after 1a years. It comes just days after a man appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged plot to kidnap her. Heres our entertainment correspondent, lizo mzimba. September 2009, Holly Willoughby s first appearance. Welcome. Thank you. How do you feel . Hello. Er. Like this isnt really happening. And for much of the next 1a years, it was her on screen relationship with her co host phillip schofield. 0h oh, my god . That kept daytime Television Viewers constantly entertained. Yeah whoa wow but her on screen chemistry with him appeared to vanish earlier this year before he left the show admitting to lying to her and others about his relationship with a work colleague. She announced her departure on social media saying. I think now, without holly in the mix, it raises a big question about maybe whether the show itself needs a bigger refresh and about whether there needs to be a new combination of presenters to help step into that role. Because if it works, then, of course, this morning can have another decade or so of success. But if it doesnt, then a show can unravel pretty quickly. She didnt specify her reasons for leaving, but last week a man appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates Court charged with planning her kidnap and murder. She and the audience didnt know at the time, but this last week was herfinal appearance. Itv says theyre looking forward to working with her on other programmes in the future. See you tomorrow. Many of us started this week with high temperatures but they will plummet as we go through the next few days. We will see a return to what we would expect at this time of year. What is happening today is we have a Weather Front sinking south, and behind it it is dragging in some cooler conditions for much of the uk. But not into the south. This is it here, moving across england and wales. Heavy rain across wales, the Met Office Has A yellow Weather Warning for it, as much as 60 millimetres on Higher Ground but there rain not reaching the far south of england until later this evening. Behind it, for Northern Ireland, laterfor Northern England and scotland, mostly dry day with sunshine, but there will be a peppering of showers. That is coming in on the bristol north wind, especially in the north and west, and the wind will Touch Gale Force at times across the far north of scotland. You can see the contrast quite nicely here. The fresher conditions, ten to 16 or 17 degrees behind the Weather Front, but we are still warm in the south. Not as one as yesterday when we got over 25 degrees, but we are looking at highs up degrees, but we are looking at highs up to about 22. Through this evening and overnight, this rain makes it to the south. Some parts of Southern England have not seen rain for some time. Under clearskies, behind it, the temperature will fall away, the winds will ease, the showers will ease, and for some in scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland, there will be some pockets of frost but not so across Southern England, where we still at this stage are in the milder air. Tomorrow we start off with this cloud, some rain and some drizzle. It will tend to ease off as we go through the day. For the rest of the country, we are looking at, again, another dry day with plenty of sunshine around, but a week by the front coming in across the north west and that will introduce thicker cloud and showers and the winds having eased off will strengthen here. Good morning. Good morning. It gets really expensive, whatever type of car you have, when you factor in repairs, insurance, tax will stop keeping a car on the road is not cheap at all. In general, we are paying more than ever to ensure our vehicles. The Insurance Industry blames inflation and a massive rise in repair costs with an average of £511 to ensure a car on the uk roads now. Thats 21 higher than a year ago. But owners of electric vehicles are suffering even more, with premiums up over 70 in the year to september, to an average of £959. That is a steep increase. Why are premiums going up so much . Like all cars, Electric Cars go round, as well. But they cost more to repair. Not only are they around 25 more expensive to fix than petrol or diesel vehicles, theyll often be in the garage for longer. And thats because getting parts is difficult. The report was written before the alleged escape by Daniel Khalife last month lets take a look at the tubes now, and theres a good service on the tubes this morning apart from minor delays on the piccadilly line. Now onto the weather with kate kinsella. Good morning. It was another mild night last night, and today it is still going to feel pretty warm. We have got quite a bit of cloud around, a few bright spells, some breaks in the cloud this morning. It is dry, but through the afternoon we will see The Rain Arriving. Temperatures still potentially at 23 degrees, still in that warm air mass. There is a slow moving cold front which will eventually bring about the change. We will see outbreaks of rain during the night, minimum temperatures are still double figures, 11 celsius. From tomorrow, low pressure moves in, pushing that Weather Front across. It is going to be cloudy. Temperature is not especially cold but cooler than they have been, 18 celsius the maximum. As we head into the weekend, overnight thursday into friday, the heavy rain will linger, but eventually clearing as we head through the weekend. Plenty of sunshine, but temperatures dropping significantly, night time temperatures could produce a patchy frost. Thats it for now. England are back on track at the Cricket World Cup after their comfortable victory over bangladesh yesterday. It was a superb showing from dawid malan with the bat. As england posted 36a from their 50 overs. In response, bangladesh never looked like reaching the target, reece topley took four wickets before sam curran sealed the win by 137 runs. Theyll face afghanistan next in delhi on sunday. I think we were just totally outplayed in the last game. If you dwell on Something Like that too much, you can start overthinking it, but this team has always bounced back and been more aggressive when we are under pressure. It is one of the traits that has been so successful for the team, and the challenge to us was to keep being aggressive even though we were under pressure. Thankfully we did that with the bat and the ball tonight. In the days other match, pakistan chased down a world cup record score to beat sri lanka. Mohammed rizwans unbeaten century saw them reach their target of 3a5 with ten balls remaining. That is a Statement Victory for them, but the good news, england will be pleased that they are now back on track with that win after defeat in the first match. They are, thank you, john. Lets bring it up to date now with events in the middle east. Israeli Defence Forces have shared details of a massacre of civilians which was uncovered after they regained control of a village attacked by hamas. The group, which is designated as a Terror Organisation by many western governments including the uk, began its assault on saturday morning, killing both soldiers and civilians across the country. Since then more than 1,200 people have died in israel since the attacks began, and more than 900 have been killed in gaza. Details of the massacre in an Israeli Village where fighting continued until yesterday morning have emerged, with Israeli Soldiers saying that some of the dead had been beheaded, including children. Elsewhere, hamas launched a fresh Rocket Attack on Southern Israel after warning people to leave the city of ashkelon. This israel has also continued to heavily bomb gaza. We have a small team of about ten people in a small team of about ten people in gaza. We are obviously very concerned for their safety as we are for all civilians there. We have been working in gaza since 1996, and what we do is we are trying to monitor, verify what has been happening on the ground, and they are trying to use the contacts they have built up over the years with ngos, with the authorities, to try and check and see what has happened, but as you can imagine, given the bombardment, given the restrictions on movement, given the power cuts, it is extremely worrying. We are also trying to monitor as best we can with our colleagues in the region to keep across the situation. You are painting a horrific picture both from israel and from gaza, and the impact on civilians. This is why we are so worried. It is an unprecedented situation. We also know how this plays out. The people who pay the price are israeli civilians and palestinian civilians. Lets just pick up on that very point. Obviously extreme concern about the civilians caught up in the middle of this conflict. What sort of situation are the existing in now . How dangerous is life for them . For the people in gaza, for the civilians, they are clearly enduring night after night of bombardment. We are very concerned about the humanitarian situation, as are our colleagues in the un humanitarian agency, precisely because they have said that they will be imposing a full siege. This is an area that has already endured 16 years of blockade, already had an extremely precarious humanitarian situation. The concern is that supplies are running out, that food is running out, fuel is running out, and it is making life intolerable. We will make those two points here. One is that any kind of imposition of a siege that does endanger civilians is prohibited under international law. We know that hamas continues to fire rockets, and the firing of indiscriminate rockets on civilian areas is also outlawed under international law. So we are concerned about the Human Rights Violations taking place, violations that may possibly amount to war crimes. ~ ~. , that may possibly amount to war crimes. ~ ~. ,. , , crimes. We know that time is very much of the crimes. We know that time is very much of the essence. Crimes. We know that time is very much of the essence. Speaking i crimes. We know that time is very much of the essence. Speaking to j crimes. We know that time is very much of the essence. Speaking to our correspondence in the region, we were hearing that there is around a two week window of supplies, Power Supplies are intermittent, water is a big concern. How concerned are you about the increasing Time Pressure as the days tick on . We about the increasing Time Pressure as the days tick on . As the days tick on . We are extremely as the days tick on . We are extremely concerned. As the days tick on . We are l extremely concerned. Clearly as the days tick on . We are extremely concerned. Clearly as you are saying, the supplies are finite. The un and other humanitarian agencies do have supplies, but it is extremely worrying, and precisely because of the already very difficult situation in gaza, it makes it almost impossible. This is an area that has been subjected to difficult conditions already for 16 years, it is already very precarious and we are concerned about how this may play out. That is why the Un High Commissionerfor may play out. That is why the un High Commissioner for human may play out. That is why the Un High Commissionerfor human rights is calling for an end to the warfare. We know from bitter experience what this means. It doesnt increase the peace and security of israelis and palestinians, itjust creates palestinians, it just creates incalculable palestinians, itjust creates incalculable suffering. We have an inspiring story for you now about henry fraser. Henry was left paralysed from the shoulders down after an accident on holiday in 2009, when he was just 17 years old. Since his injury, henry has gone on to inspire many with his positive outlook on life. Hes become a successful artist after learning to paint using only his mouth, and now his story is being told on the west end. Tim muffett went to meet him and the cast. Henry fraser creates stunning works of art. And he lives by this motto. I was 17 years old, in 2009, just on holiday with group of mates. We went to praia da luz in the algarve in portugal. Went to cool off in the sea. I went head first straight into a kind of sandbank and kind of blacked out for a bit and just totally unable to move anything. You know, severely damaged the spinal cord. Causing the paralysis i have now. Since his accident, henry has been paralyzed from the shoulders down. The very first day i was put into a wheelchair, just sobbing and crying uncontrollably, and all i wanted to do is hug my mum and i couldnt even do that, which made things a million times worse. And it was that night i wasjust lying in bed and i think ijust, you know, i thought, well, theres no point me kind of being sad or angry about this ijust need to get on with it. The sheer physicality of painting with a paintbrush in your mouth how long did it take you to reach a standard which you were happy with . About two years to get to a point where i was really confident. Ijust kept trying to, you know, try Different Things, try new techniques, different colours, different images, whatever. Just trying to challenge myself to. To kind of push that progression. Henry is now a successful artist with a huge following on social media. And his autobiography, the little big things, has been turned into a west end musical. I wish forever. Could feel like this. So you both play henry fraser. Jonny a young henry fraser, pre accident. Ed after the accident. Whats it like portraying henry . Its an honor, first of all, quite a responsibility. But as also an absolute joy. Little big things that stay on my mind. Boy henry actually sticks around as kind of a representation of who man henry used to be. But also, theres something that henry talks a lot about in his book, which is comparing himself to that former version to that past version of himself. Ed, youre the first Wheelchair User to play the lead in a west end musical. How does that feel . I feel very proud, but it also feels like quite a responsibility. Because im the first, i feel like theres a sense of kind of paving the way for, like, future people in the industry. And also, if im honest, there is a sense of a little bit of sadness that its taken this long. I was the kind who gave up easily. When you first saw the production, what was that like . It was the best night of my life. You know, theres very few people that get to say that their life is a west end musical. Sat beside me till i fell asleep. I the silence as you held my hand. Its just. Its the first time i felt seen as a kind of disabled person on stage. We dont very often get to see ourselves. It should have happened years ago. This is all a step forward and theres going to be lots more, i hope. This is the first time a Wheelchair User has had the lead in a west end musical. How important is it that that has happened . Absolutely important. I was crying all the musical i couldnt stop. It was, oh, so beautiful. I wish forever. Could feel like this. Just us and the sound of the ocean. There is this line in the musical in which the younger pre accident version of you says to the post accident version of you, i cant wait to be you. That seems an extraordinary thing for that younger version of you to say. I mean, does that ring true . Im definitely much happier now than i was before my accident. I always defined my pre accient life by my physicality, by sport, by being in the gym. Whereas now i kind of had to completely reverse that. Thats going to get that physical strength and put it in my head and just look at life and approach life in a completely new way. Wouldnt be able to do these things and enjoy life as much as i am now had i not had the accident. Little things. That mean the big things to me. That looks absolutely brilliant. He is such a story, such a guy. The little big things is playing at londons soho Place Theatre, and hasjust had its run extended until march. So quite a long time to see it. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning, both. You will really notice a difference in the weather over the next few days, it will turn cooler, and by the time we get to the weekend, temperatures having been above average for many of us will actually be below average. Todayit will actually be below average. Today it is starting to get cooler for many, we have a Weather Front sinking south bringing rain, and as it moves south, behind it fresh conditions follow in. So you can see the contrast from yesterday. Just short of 26 celsius, the fourth consecutive day in october that we have at a temperature in the uk somewhere above 25 celsius. Since october 1959. Somewhere above 25 celsius. Since october1959. Loic somewhere above 25 celsius. Since october 1959. Loic was 13 degrees, and watch this. If i run the chart, note how the colours change, so we have got fresher conditions coming in, a Brief Respite and then all the blues return indicating it will become much colder as we head into the weekend. A lot of rain around too particularly across england and wales, heavy rain in parts of wales especially the west, and on Higher Ground as much as 60 millimetres. That is slowly sinking south through the course of the day, but it wont get into the far south of england until much later. But for the north we are looking at drier conditions with sunshine and blustery showers, particularly in the north and west. Note the temperature too, still in the warmer air note the temperature too, still in the warmerair in note the temperature too, still in the warmer air in the south, 20, 20 i the warmer air in the south, 20, 20 1 degrees but already we are looking at 1018 1 degrees but already we are looking at 10 18 as we push from Northern Scotland towards the midlands, so change is afoot. As we head on through the evening and overnight, the rain continues to journey southwards, they will be mist and murk around it as well. Clearer skies follow one behind, the showers will ease and they will be pockets further north but it is always going to be a cold night. These temperatures represent towns and cities, in rural areas it will be lower than that, but still comparatively mild in the south. Tomorrow we start in southern parts of england and also wales with a lot of england and also wales with a lot of cloud, rain and drizzle. That will ease off as we go through the day. For scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland, a lot of dry weather good to good peppering of showers in the north and west being driven in on the brisk breeze. Temperature wise tomorrow, looking around ten in the north to 17 as we sweep down towards the south, so fresher conditions pushing down to Southern England. And then friday we have got these two Weather Fronts, one heading south and one north. Behind the one heading north, some milder air will come in but it will be a wet start across england and also wales, drier across scotland and Northern Ireland with showers coming along and a brisk north westerly wind. Not the change from the south, it is from the south west, so in the south it will be warmer temporarily but still pretty fresh elsewhere. But it is after that into the weekend, the temperatures start to drop, and for some of us they will be down by ten or 11 degrees, some of us they will be down by ten or11 degrees, maximum some of us they will be down by ten or 11 degrees, maximum temperatures down to 13 on sunday with snow on the hills. That is going to be a shock why didnt we make more that mild weather while we had it from the bottom of the sea to the edge of a desert cliff this years contenders for Wildlife Photographer of the year have showcased the worlds very best nature photography. The competition attracted almost 50,000 entries from 95 countries. Well speak to one of the winners in just a moment, but first lets take a look at some of the stunning pictures. How do you choose . In what was really cool about this particular moment was that the Killer Whales, just as they were charging towards the chunk of ice, they all started blowing bubbles, scientists think it is part of their complex communication to line up to create one of these waves. line up to create one of these waves. ~ ,. ,. ,. , waves. Drones have allowed photographers and therefore all of us to see the world in a completely different way, havent they . Totally. In the case of these whales, if you are watching them from the boat, we were following them in a boat navigating through them in a boat navigating through the ice, and you are seeing dorsal fin is, backs, occasionally you see one of these waves, but it is only really when you go into the air that suddenly you reveal what is going on, all the complex coordination, and throughout the competition i feel very honoured to be alongside lots of other incredible pictures, many of which were taken with drones, and they are changing the way we see the world for sure. Some of the situation is that you have i of the situation is that you have worked in might be a little bit scary for some people. How brave do you need to be to get these shots . Im not sure about brave. I find this far more scary, chatting to you, than being in antarctica flying a drone. That is no reflection on you at all. It is just what you are used to, and the more time you spend doing something, the more comfortable you get doing it, and i think that is really the key to filming and photographing wildlife is spending time outdoors, working with experts so that the strange becomes familiar, and that is when you are comfortable, and that is really the key. In the case of this picture, very cold fingers, it is really cold in antarctica. The boat is moving, the drone is in the air, the wind is blowing, but it isnt about any of those things. You need to be comfortable in that situation, which you just get from experience and practice in working with great people, and that allows you to focus on interpreting the Animal Behaviour and making sure the camera is on the right position to try and get the shot. . ,. , right position to try and get the shot. ~. , right position to try and get the shot. , ,. ,. , shot. And constantly repositioning it over the top of repositioning it over the top of these Killer Whales, and they are just mind blowing to watch, so when they are hunting, they will fan out in a battle line, as soon as they find an area of ice that they are looking for, because they know that is how they will find the seals. And they spread out and start charging, they spread out and start charging, they are often doing six or seven knots, so nearly eight or nine miles an hour, and it is really challenging for the boat to keep up with, because we are weaving between the chunks of ice that the Killer Whales are zooming under, and so the drone not only is the tool that we are using to photograph them, it is also the tool im using to help the boat to keep up with the Killer Whales, because often we get stuck trying to push a piece of ice out of the way with the boat to get through, and the Killer Whales would keep a singalong going under the ice, and the drone would be the way that we would keep up with them. And i mention that i get to work with great people, and that is really one of the best parts of myjob, as well as getting to hang out with cool animals, and in this case i worked with some really amazing boat captains, two legendary antarctic sailors, and they were not afraid to put dents in the hull pushing ice out of the way to get to these Killer Whales. I out of the way to get to these Killer Whales. Out of the way to get to these Killer Whales. ,. , ,. , Killer Whales. I hope we wont scary as Killer Whales he was surviving at the end. We will get all the latest in the middle east in our headlines. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Hello, good morning from bbc london, imjim wheble. Temperatures, though, still potentially at 23 celsius were still within that warm air mass. Now, overnight, further spells of rain. Its a very slow moving cold front which will eventually bring about the change. Well see some outbreaks of rain through the night. The minimum temperature still double figures 11 celsius. Now for tomorrow, low pressure just starts to move in from the west, pushing that front back across us so well see further spells of rain. It is going to be cloudy. Temperatures not especially cold, but cooler than they have been 18 celsius the maximum. Now, as we head into the weekend, overnight, thursday into friday, some heavy rain thats going to linger into friday, but eventually clearing. As we head through the weekend, High Pressure builds. Plenty of sunshine, its dry, but the temperature dropping significantly night time temperatures could produce a patchy frost. Thats it for now. Take a look at our website, though where if youve heard about the bed bug infestation thats happening in france, you can see what the mayor sadiq khan is saying about whats happening here to make sure the same thing doesnt happen in london. The military says it has been recovering the bodies of whole families, including several children, following an attack by hamas in one Israeli Village. The Israeli Defence forces say more than 1,200 israelis have been killed since saturday. Palestinian Health Officials say more than 900 people in gaza have lost their lives. Our correspondent nick beake reports from israel. We have been controlling the area from day to and we are on the offensive, it will only intensify. The resistance the israeli troops will encounter is likely to be fierce. Hamas will be preparing to meet in advance. The prospect is of even more bloodshed in this part of the middle east. Nick beake, bbc news, tel aviv. Lets speak to our chief International Correspondent, lyse doucet, who is in ashkelon this morning. Good morning. Are you getting a sense from where you are of an escalation coming from the israeli side this morning . Side this morning . Well, there certainly is side this morning . Well, there certainly is an side this morning . Well, there certainly is an intensification. Side this morning . Well, there| certainly is an intensification of security in this zone. Ashkelon is the most southernmost city in Southern Israel. You can seejust behind me, the flags and the Israeli Soldiers. This is now a closed military zone. Garter is down this road, about three miles away and you can possibly see in the distance the plumes of smoke. Sometimes there is a wall of black smoke rising from gaza, so intense is the aerial bombardment of this coastal territory. Just out of the line of vision of our camera there is a long line of israeli army, help they are amassing tanks along the border. Preparation for what is expected to be at some point, when israel is ready, a ground invasion. Meanwhile, even though israel has said yesterday it was able to reclaim its southern border, infiltration is still happening. Yesterday there was infiltration by hamas. There was an exchange of fire, some of the hamas gunmen who infiltrated were killed. Ashkelon itself came under attack by hamas fighters who were able to infiltrate. They are still using paragliders. In the last few minutes we were given a warning from the Israeli Forces here that this area around the edges of ashkelon could be targeted by mortar fire from hamas. They are still trying to enter this area, but possibly by sea, by boat, orthere enter this area, but possibly by sea, by boat, or there was paragliders, and so using mortar fire as cover. This is a very active area and we have taken our position here just area and we have taken our position herejust on the area and we have taken our position here just on the edge of this closed Military Area. Is here just on the edge of this closed Military Area Military Area. Is there a sense this mornin , Military Area. Is there a sense this morning. A Military Area. Is there a sense this morning, a feeling Military Area. Is there a sense this morning, a feeling of Military Area. Is there a sense this morning, a feeling of limbo . I Military Area. Is there a sense this morning, a feeling of limbo . You | morning, a feeling of limbo . You talk about the gathering of equipment, the sense that everybody is waiting for something to happen, and nobody seems to quite know when thatis and nobody seems to quite know when that is going to be. This and nobody seems to quite know when that is going to be. That is going to be. This will be a massive military that is going to be. This will be a massive Military Undertaking i that is going to be. This will be a massive Military Undertaking by| massive Military Undertaking by Israeli Security forces. A decade now israeli leaders, including Benjamin Netanyahu himself, have resisted calls for israeli troops to go back into gaza to come duct and massive land the territory they pulled out from in 2005. Now, given the dimensions of this particular assault by hamas voices, we constantly use of the word unprecedented, the shock and anger in israel, the sense that israel, the phrase they are using is that we are going to do whatever it takes, and it does seem that this time israel has decided that what it will take is going in on the ground. We understand there are some 350,000 reservists who have been called up. We saw on the road coming down here last night, all along the road, lined up, vehicles as reservists, volunteers who came to sign up, they left their cars on the side of the road and paid to the front line. Israel needs the voices in place, it needs the army in place, it needs the organisation in place to put these people together. It is a highly risky operation. There will be many of its most elite troops involved, but also. Sorry, ithink we are being told. We are being told now. Iwill we are being told. We are being told now. I will keep recording. We can get the camera off here, then perhaps we can keep reporting. We are going to move now a little bit safe away. We have been told. We are going to move away, we can see the black smoke rising. They are worried that they possibly could be some mortars landing in this area so as a precaution we will move a little bit away so we are in a safer area but i think we are still safe to keep broadcasting. This is what it is like. It is a very, very unpredictable situation and although Israeli Forces are trying to reassure residents of this area, most of course have pulled out but it is trying as much as possible to talk about controlling the area, about asserting control, but this is about asserting control, but this is a situation israel has never confronted before. Never in all of its confrontation with gaza, and this goes back decades of course, have they seen a situation like this. ~ have they seen a situation like this. ,. , have they seen a situation like this. , i. That is lyse doucet, our chief International Correspondent, reporting live from ashkelon this morning. The first Plane Carrying Supplies has the first plane carrying us Military Supplies has arrived in israel, according to local authorities. Lets ta ke lets take you live to the situation in gaza, this is our live camera, the image you can see of the smoke through the sky there. We are hearing from the red cross in the last few minutes that People Living there are Hearing Emergency Sirens constantly, they are hearing explosions. They go on to say they dont know when their Food Supplies will run out, they dont know how long their electricity might be on for. At the moment the red cross hearing there are only four hours of electricity per day in gaza. People are concerned about their children. The influx of wounded to medical facilities is unfortunately only increasing. That image we are showing you now, as lyse mentioned, just three miles from ashkelon, where we spoke to lyse just a couple of minutes ago. That is the latest situation there. Now more of the days news. A developing story for you. All flights have been suspended at Luton Airport after a huge fire caused one of its multistorey car parks to collapse. Five people have been taken to hospital after breathing in smoke. Greg mckenzie reports. Oh, my god huge flames and smoke billowing from the terminal 2 car park. You can see from where you are the damage and the ongoing efforts to damp down. You damage and the ongoing efforts to damp down damp down. You can indeed. Good morninu. Damp down. You can indeed. Good morning just damp down. You can indeed. Good morning. Just over damp down. You can indeed. Good morning. Just over my damp down. You can indeed. Good morning. Just over my shoulder i damp down. You can indeed. Good| morning. Just over my shoulder you can see what remains of that multistorey car park. 1200 cars were in there at the time and you can just see in the middle it has partially collapsed. What is left is the blackened building of that car park at terminal 2. In terms of injuries, five people injured stop four firefighters taken to hospital with Smoke Inhalation. And also a member of the public. The airport will remain closed to members of the public until midday today. The fire chief of Bedfordshire Fire Service is expected to brief the media in the next hour but ultimately many passengers that left here this morning off those planes that were left on the runway with them on board, they disembarked and they were simply told to evacuate and were simply told to evacuate and were left stranded by some of the airlines. Many were left locally on motorways with their luggage and their children, just desperate and wanting to get home, but many peoples cars are obviously in that car park and in the neighbouring car parks. So many of them were taken to hotels and many of the hotels opened their Reception Areas for them to sleep overnight. I went into quite a few of them and spoke to people and they simply said they had no information, they wanted to know how they were going to get home and who was going to help them. But there is a number of investigations. The police have launched an investigation, as have the airport, and of course the Bedfordshire Fire Service, trying to determine the exact cause of the fire. It is believed it was a car that because that fire, an electric car, although that fire, an electric car, although that has not been confirmed. Back to you in the studio. Rgreg that has not been confirmed. Back to you in the studio. You in the studio. Greg mckenzie, thank you you in the studio. Greg mckenzie, thank you. While you in the studio. Greg mckenzie, thank you. While he you in the studio. Greg mckenzie, thank you. While he was you in the studio. Greg mckenzie, thank you. While he was speaking you in the studio. Greg mckenzie, i thank you. While he was speaking to us we have heard from Luton Airport that flights are suspended until at least 3pm, three hours later than thought. We will keep you up to date on any further changes. The Labour Party Conference comes to an end in liverpool today. Sir Keir Starmers speech was briefly interrupted yesterday after a protestor poured glitter all over him. Our chief Political Correspondent Henry Zeffman said it was clear everyone was taken by surprise. In the hall i think there was bewilderment at how this man had managed to get so close to the leader of the labour party, who has round the clock security, by the way, and then also at what he was actually protesting in favour of. It seems to be proportional representation and a different way of doing politics. Not that he seemed to have got his argument across favourably to the people in the hole, who were of course pretty angry with him. But, look, once keir starmer got going, having taken off his jacket and brushed a bit of glitter off his shoulders, his speech went down incredibly well in the hall. I think better than any of the hall. I think better than any of the other speeches he has given in his time as labour party leader. And, look, there was not some torrent of policy, which some people had been urging him to offer, but what there was was an argument about why he wants to be Prime Minister, and about how the country would be different if he became Prime Minister. He talked about how the british people had had a difficult few years and how he thought he could heal, his words, hell divisions that have opened up in the uk. Now, look, keir starmer keeps saying no complacency stop yes, they are well ahead of the conservatives in the polls but they are taking nothing for granted. Im sure thats true in his case. Wandering around the conference last night, ito say, it didnt take a few questions for me, with most people i was talking to, for them to admit to me they really do think that labour is headed for government. Now, look, the election isnt tomorrow, the election isnt next month. It might not even be in a years time, it could be quite late next year or perhaps even injanuary could be quite late next year or perhaps even in january 2025, could be quite late next year or perhaps even injanuary 2025, thats the latest possible time it could be. So there is a long way left to 90, be. So there is a long way left to go, but the labour partys optimism is just completely transformed from when keir starmer became leader three and a half years ago, they really do think they are on track the government. We will go live to liverpool and speak to sir keir starmer in a few minutes. A second earthquake has hit afghanistan. It comes just days after one in the same region killed more than a thousand people. The new 6. 3 magnitude quake struck north of the city of herat. The impact is not yet clear. The independent Monitoring Board at Wandsworth Prison has found that a severe shortage of available staff is undermining efforts to run the jail effectively. The board drew its conclusions before the alleged escape by Daniel Khalife last month. As weve been hearing this morning details of a massacre committed by hamas in a Border Village have been revealed, with Israeli Forces saying it has been recovering the bodies of whole families, including several children. The Prime Minister rishi sunak has described scenes from israel as horrifying. Lets get more on the uks response, we can speak to defence secretary grant shapps, who joins us from brussels. Good morning. More and more details emerging at night. Horrifying details and we are hearing that the us carriage, a plane of military aid has arrived in israel. What can the uk do at this point . Uk do at this point . Provide support. Uk do at this point . Provide support. I uk do at this point . Provide support, ithink. Uk do at this point . Provide support, i think. Those i uk do at this point . Provide i support, i think. Those scenes and those reports have been absolutely horrific. Disgusting and horrifying, as you say, and theyjust keep getting worse. Reports of babies being butchered, boys being beheaded coming through and we know for sure that people have been slaughtered in their hundreds and Holocaust Victims who escaped the nazis being murdered. These are not acts carried out by freedom fighters, obviously, or militia or gunmen. These are pure and simple terrorists and i think it is very important that that is correctly reported by all news organisations. In terms of support, i have spoken to israeli ministers and we are offering our moral support but also practical support where that can be provided, as well. What do you mean by practical support . What do you mean by practical su ort . ~ ,. , what do you mean by practical suuort . ,. ,. , support . Well, first of all, it is very important support . Well, first of all, it is very important that support . Well, first of all, it is very important that other i support . Well, first of all, it is i very important that other countries and other regions dont think it is and other regions dont think it is a good idea to get involved here, so far that has been limited in nature, which is good. And so we will continue to review how we can assist with that, and that is in a variety of different ways, not all of which i can go into. Secondly, questions about protected. Protective clothing and materials, helmets and there was a sort of things. We have asked the Israeli Government to let us know what they need, and again we continue to talk to them about that. But i thinkjust the scale of what has now been revealed, what happened, the indiscriminate nature, means that what israel needs most of all is reassurance that the world is with them and that we give them absolutely. But with them and that we give them absolutel. . , with them and that we give them absolutely absolutely. But nothing beyond dilomatic absolutely. But nothing beyond diplomatic support absolutely. But nothing beyond diplomatic support at absolutely. But nothing beyond diplomatic support at this i absolutely. But nothing beyond. Diplomatic support at this point . Well, we are keeping everything under review. We have assets in the region, both in the med and the gulf, but we want to be absolutely helpful in this situation. As i say, the biggest priority is making sure that other countries, for example, other groupings, dont think that this is a moment to take advantage of the situation, and that this remains a situation between hamas, the terrorist organisation, and israel, who have the right to defend themselves, and that is where british policy is focused and british policy is focused and british assistance is being offered. Can you see a situation where there is a uk facilitated evacuation of british citizens from israel . Well, there are probably british citizens from israel . Well, there are probably 50,000 i british citizens from israel . Well, there are probably 50,000 to i british citizens from israel . Ii there are probably 50,000 to 60,000 british citizens in israel and also the garzo west bank and lebenon, so if you take the total number at the gaza west bank. There are disruptions to that and more people looking to leave stop at the commercial airlines will be best placed to get people out who want to leave. A lot of those individuals one thing people can do if they are in israel is registered at their interest with the foreign office, their website can be used to do that and that will help give an overall better picture. Right now, and having handled evacuations myself in the past, when i was transport secretary, i know that the best approach is via the commercial airlines. 50 best approach is via the commercial airlines. ,. , airlines. So it seems that there is airlines. So it seems that there is a contingency airlines. So it seems that there is a contingency plan, airlines. So it seems that there is a contingency plan, should i airlines. So it seems that there is a contingency plan, should you i airlines. So it seems that there is i a contingency plan, should you need to step in and do that. To step in and do that. Well, as i sa , to step in and do that. Well, as i say. There to step in and do that. Well, as i say. There is to step in and do that. Well, as i say, there is no to step in and do that. Well, as i say, there is no reason to step in and do that. Well, as i say, there is no reason at to step in and do that. Well, as i say, there is no reason at the i say, there is no reason at the moment why, for example, israel would need to be evacuated. We are not in that situation particularly now that the initial stage of this has been contained, the border has been sealed again with gaza. So there will be patience required but it is a practicality thing, it is the best and most capable way of people leaving israel, if thats what they want to do, is via the commercial airlines and, as i say, although it is patchy, the israeli version of the caa, the Civil Aviation authority, is well run, well managed, and the civilian route is the way to get that done. Benjamin netanyahu has signalled the retaliation will use, the enormous voice and has described the fight is one against human animals. Enormous force. I those words right . Yes, if you think about what has happened, you know, families being slaughtered, babies being murdered. Festivalgoers. This is not. You know, this is not human behaviour, to go around and do that. This is targeting, targeting of civilians, targeting of babies, targeting of pensioners. It is not what israel will now do in return, which is to go after hamas, the terrorist themselves, there is no equivalence between the two and of course israel has the absolute right to defend itself and britain stands by their right to do so. By their right to do so. Separately toda i by their right to do so. Separately today i know by their right to do so. Separately today i know you by their right to do so. Separately today i know you are by their right to do so. Separately today i know you are announcing l by their right to do so. Separately i today i know you are announcing new literary support package for ukraine. Will this be sustainable if support for israel is now required, as well . ~. ,. , ~. ,. , as well . Well, look, one of the reasons i as well . Well, look, one of the reasons i am as well . Well, look, one of the reasons i am here as well . Well, look, one of the reasons i am here at as well . Well, look, one of the reasons i am here at nato i as well . Well, look, one of the reasons i am here at nato in i reasons i am here at nato in brussels, i am reasons i am here at nato in brussels, iam here reasons i am here at nato in brussels, i am here with 50 other countries, all of whom have pledged to support ukraine. Our message here today will be quite straightforward, i will be seeing president zelensky here later this morning, and he is here later this morning, and he is here to remind us the focus remains on the war in europe, as well as, of course, this deep concern for what is happening in israel and im actually here today, committing more resources to that fight against putin so there is £100 million which will lead international support, to help with clearing mines which have been laid by putin. In fact, ukraine is probably now the most mined country in the world. And also money to help with their defence, as well. Another £70 million. So we are here to say to president zelensky, and i am here on behalf of britain to say to him, and we must win that battle. Grant shapps, thank you very much indeed. We will be speaking to sir keir starmer in a couple of minutes. There is the new travel and weather where you are. Hello. Good morning from bbc london. Imjim wheble. All flights at Luton Airport have been suspended and people have been asked not to travel there because of a large fire overnight in a terminal car park it suffered a significant structural collapse according to Bedfordshire Fire Service which affected half of the multistorey structure and involved numerous cars. Hundreds of people were stranded in Luton Airport after flying back, with no way of getting home. Flights are suspended until atleast three oclock this afternoon. There is concern across the capital about a possible rise in Anti Semitism, following the renewed violence in the middle east. In the mostlyjewish area of Golders Green in north london, graffiti on a bridge is being investigated. The Community Security trust, a charity which helszewish people in the uk with security, says theyre concerned it will get worse. A every time there is conflict in the middle east, jews in london jews in london suffer verbal abuse, and theres graffiti, and theres damage to property. Thats already happened this time around from saturday morning through to now when were having this conversation, and it will continue and there will probably be physical violence, as well. Wandsworth prison in South West London has been deemed unsafe and inhumane, a watchdog warns. The prisons independent Monitoring Board also said its seen no Real Progress in the past year and reflects the failures of the Prison System as a whole, reporting that assaults had also risen by more than 20 in all areas, including on staff and prisoners. The report was written before the alleged escape by Daniel Khalife last month. Lets take a look at the tubes now and theres a good service on the tubes this morning. Now onto the weather with kate kinsella. Good morning. It was another mild night last night, and actually today its still going to feel pretty warm. We have got quite a bit of cloud around, a few bright spells, some breaks in the cloud this morning its dry but through the afternoon the cloud will thicken and well see The Rain Arriving as we head towards the end of the day. Take a look at our website, though, where if youve heard about the Bedbug Infestation thats happeneing in france, you can see what the mayor sadiq khan is saying about whats happening here to make sure the same thing doesnt happen in london. Ill be back in half an hour, but for now, back tojon and sally. Welcome back, everybody. Wednesday morning. You are watching breakfast with sally nugent and jon kay. Were joined now by Labour Leader, sir keir starmer. We have just heard from the government from grant shapps pledging support to israel. How far do you think that support should go . I think we have to stand together on this. I think everybody watching will be appalled and shocked by the senseless cold blooded murder of men, women and children, and this is terrorism, this is hamas terrorism, and israel has the absolute right to defend herself against the ongoing hostage situation, so on this, the opposition and government standards one on standing with israel. Grant sha s one on standing with israel. Grant shapps was one on standing with israel. Grant shapps was talking one on standing with israel. On what the government will do, i dont want to get ahead of the government on this, because i dont think there should because i dont think there should be any Party Politics in the face of this dark time for israel, but i do think it is important on the half of all of us here in liverpool at our conference to say that our thoughts, our condolences, sadly, are with all those who are affected by this. This is hamas terrorism, and israel must have entered does have the right to defend herself. Keir have entered does have the right to defend herself. Defend herself. Sense was, i have waited for years to get the labour party from where we landed in 2019 to make this speech, which is very important to set out the positive case for labour, and i was not going to be deflected from that. So that is why i took off myjacket, rolled up my sleeves and got on with the speech, not withstanding that i had bits of glitter still in my hair and on my shoulders as well. We have worked so hard to change this labour party. It is unrecognisable from 2019. We want to expose the government and the snp in scotland is unfit to govern, and now to make a positive case. This was bang on schedule politically for the labour party and i wasnt going to let that idea deflect us from all of that hard work. You to let that idea deflect us from all of that hard work. My job to deal with security issues. Myjob was to get on the stage and to make that speech, and i got on and i made that speech, and i got on and i made that speech, and many people have said to me, keir, the labour party know that you stand for stability, but can you build for the case for hope on top of that, and that is what i was doing yesterday. We dont have to go on with what we have had, years of decline, we can move forward as a country to a decade of National Renewal, and try to capture the hope that so many of us in this country carry in our hearts about the future of the country. I wonder if some voters the future of the country. I wonder if some voters might the future of the country. I wonder if some voters might think the future of the country. I wonder if some voters might think that the future of the country. I wonder| if some voters might think that the speech could have done with a bit of sparkle as well, dare i say, because you talked about housing, lots of talk about how important it is, and yet what you are committing to, 1. 5 million new homes over five years, thatis million new homes over five years, that is only what the conservatives have said that they will do, and a lot of people would like you to go further, be more ambitious. The oint of further, be more ambitious. The point of the further, be more ambitious. The point of the speech further, be more ambitious. Tt;e point of the speech was further, be more ambitious. Tt9 point of the speech was to further, be more ambitious. Tt9 point of the speech was to reach further, be more ambitious. Tt9 point of the speech was to reach for the future and so we can have a decade of National Renewal. It was to draw on all of those within all of our communities who work so hard, notwithstanding the failure of the last 13 years from government, and people have got on with it. I was saying, lets take that spirit and use that for a decade of National Renewal on housing, hugely important. I know this personally, we didnt have a huge amount of money when i was growing up, but we had the security of our own home, which meant a huge amount to me and gave me the platform to go forward, so we have put the number up there. The question isnt whether the conservatives will put a number up, they have. But they have consistently failed to deliver. What i have put alongside the number that we pledged yesterday as a plan for delivery, a determination to ensure that we bulldoze through the planning restrictions and that we work with developers to make sure this is delivered. And that was something very important coming out of yesterday, which is that i am going through a process of bomb proofing every single thing we put before the electorate. After the last 13 years, im not prepared to have an incoming Labour Government, should we be privileged to serve, that doesnt deliver on its promises, sol that doesnt deliver on its promises, so i have robustly tested everything, and the question for me is notjust the number that we choose to build, but have we got the plan in place, have we got that in place to actually deliver it to . And im confident that we can do that, and im not prepared to put anything before the electorate that im not confident we can deliver. Part of your plan for delivering on housing is a new generation of new towns to be built. Where are they going to be, these new towns . We do want a generation going to be, these new towns . We do want a generation of going to be, these new towns . We do want a generation of new going to be, these new towns . We do want a generation of new towns. Going to be, these new towns . 9 u want a generation of new towns. They will be a bidding process now, so communities will be able to bid for what they want. We will work with developers, because honestly thejob of government is to put the infrastructure around the schools, hospitals, the services needed, but if we are privileged to come into government, there will be a bidding process so that we will get the new towns where we want, when we want them, and local communities will be involved in decisions about where they should be. We have put a lot of detail out there election . We have put a lot of detail out there over election . We have put a lot of detail out there over the election . We have put a lot of detail out there over the last l election . We have put a lot of| detail out there over the last 12 months, we have put a lot of detail out through this conference. But i felt when i was thinking about this speech that just another felt when i was thinking about this speech thatjust another bit of policy isnt what is needed. This needed to be an emotional connection with the future, a sense of, does keir starmer, does labour understand what people have been through this last 13 years, and be able to reach into the soul of the nation and give the hope and aspiration that we can build a Better Future together. So the hope and aspiration that we can build a betterfuture together. So i felt strongly with this speech, yes, there was policy, there has been policy all week here in liverpool, but this was more about who am i, do i get it, does the labour party stand squarely on the ground of aspiration and opportunity for individuals, families, for communities in britain, and can we give them that hope . Because too many people feel that after the last 13 years, almost the hope has been beaten out of them by this government. We have to restore that. So this was if you like trying to create an emotional connection with the future, and that sense that a decade of National Renewal, that is what it will take, will absolutely notjust what it will take, will absolutely not just fix our country what it will take, will absolutely notjust fix our country but what it will take, will absolutely not just fix our country but take notjust fix our country but take it forward. 50 not just fix our country but take it forward. 99, not just fix our country but take it forward. ,. , not just fix our country but take it forward. ,. ,. , forward. So can people believe what those promises forward. So can people believe what those promises are, forward. So can people believe what those promises are, that forward. So can people believe what those promises are, that you forward. So can people believe what those promises are, that you will. Those promises are, that you will follow through on what youre promising to do . Because a lot of the promises you made back in 2019, you had to abandon. So how do we know that all of these will happen . That is why we are bomb proofing every policy, and i accept that that means they will be and have been adjustments in policy. The question im asking myself. 50 adjustments in policy. The question im asking myself. Im asking myself. So things will chance . I im asking myself. So things will change . I have im asking myself. So things will change . I have asked im asking myself. So things will change . I have asked and im asking myself. So things will change . I have asked and made i im asking myself. So things will. Change . I have asked and made clear that every single change . I have asked and made clear that every single thing change . I have asked and made clear that every single thing that change . I have asked and made clear that every single thing that we change . I have asked and made clear that every single thing that we now i that every single thing that we now put before the electorate is bombproof to tested, because after the last 13 years, i dont think it is fair or right to ask the British Public to go through more broken promises. So i will only put forward proposals, that is what we were doing at this conference, if i am satisfied that we are clear what we want to achieve, that we have got a plan for delivery in that we have already identified the partners who will deliver with us. We have had many businesses here in liverpool, has been a lot talk about that. That is notjust has been a lot talk about that. That is not just for cups has been a lot talk about that. That is notjust for cups of coffee and breakfast, it is having a sleeves rolled up discussion on the plans, because the British Public deserve an incoming Labour Government that is absolutely laser focused on delivery. This is what i call mission government, which is this striving sense of purpose. We are bomb proofing everyone, and we will not allow everything to be put forward to the electorate by the labour party that i am not confident we can deliver. We can deliver. Until this week, you have been very we can deliver. Until this week, you have been very cautious we can deliver. Until this week, you have been very cautious about we can deliver. Until this week, you have been very cautious about the l have been very cautious about the next election, but now you are talking about a decade of renewal, potentially ten years of Labour Government. Some people might wonder if you are getting a bit overconfident, getting a bit carried away. T overconfident, getting a bit carried awa. , overconfident, getting a bit carried awa. , ~ overconfident, getting a bit carried awa. , ~. , overconfident, getting a bit carried awa. ~ away. I dont think many people accuse me away. I dont think many people accuse me of away. I dont think many people accuse me of getting away. I dont think many people accuse me of getting carried away. I dont think many people i accuse me of getting carried away. Away. I dont think many people accuse me of getting carried away. I have been cautious, because we needed to rebuild our party and change our party at speed and ruthlessly. We needed to show what a difference an incoming Labour Government could make. So im not getting ahead of myself, and i humbly know that we must earn every vote into the general election, and there is much more work to do. But on the other hand, i wanted to be honest and say, it is not possible to fix everything within five years, given the state of the country after 13 years of this government. It is going to take a decade. I recognise that if we are privileged enough to get elected to serve, and serve is the word, not entitlement, to serve, that after five years, the electorate of course are entitled to judge us by the progress that we have made. But i did want to be honest, this is going to be a decade of National Renewal. If we pick our country up and take it forward to the place i think it can be by reaching into the spirit of the british people and giving them the future that they deserve. Sir british people and giving them the future that they deserve. Future that they deserve. Sir keir starmer, thank future that they deserve. Sir keir starmer, thank you future that they deserve. Sir keir starmer, thank you very future that they deserve. Sir keir starmer, thank you very much i future that they deserve. Sir keir| starmer, thank you very much for joining us here on bbc breakfast. Nasa scientists are preparing to unveil what they found on their recent mission to collect samples of space rock. The dust taken from the asteroid landed back in the utah desert last month, and we showed you the pictures of it crashing down to earth, but what is inside . Rebecca morelle has more. Inside this capsule are discoveries that nasa says could be Out Of This World. It contains precious fragments of an asteroid called bennu, that arrived on earth just over two weeks ago. And the Osiris Rex Mission team is about to unveil what they found and it could tell the story of our solar system. Were doing this because asteroids like bennu are time capsules or leftover debris from the early solar system. And so we can learn so much about the history of the solar system, of planet formation, and potentially about how water and organic molecules were delivered to earth all of those things that could have seeded life here on earth. Nasa travelled billions of miles to grab a sample from bennu, packing it into a capsule to bring it back home. It landed in the utah desert, where it was checked out by the mission team and then quickly secured. The asteroid sample will be divided up between scientists around the world including at londons Natural History museum, where the team are preparing for its arrival. But ashley king has already had a sneak peek he was one of the very first people to see whats been collected at nasas labs. So when they took the lid off the sample canister, we were sat watching. Itjust revealed this, like, just black powder everywhere. It was, like, incredible. It was so exciting everybody in the room was just, like, suddenly stood up, pointing at the screen. You know, we wanted to see you know, whatve we got . And it meant that we had lots of sample to play with. We already have bits of asteroids here on earth space rocks like these [and here all the time, and we can learn a lot from them. But the problem is they get contaminated as soon as they come down with the air, the dust, the bugs on the ground. So if you want something thats pristine, you need to study asteroid material thats come directly from space. The key aim of the mission is to find out exactly what this space rock is made of. Every grain of bennu that made it back to earth is invaluable. And nasa thinks theres enough to keep scientists busy for generations. The collection becomes available to the broader scientific community, and that happens for years and years. I mean, for the apollo missions, the apollo lunar samples that were brought back in 1969 people are still doing research on those samples and learning new things about the moon. So we expect a similar kind of longevity for these samples. Working on extraterrestrial material is a painstaking and difficult process. So far, as the capsule is being opened, wevejust had a glimpse of the black Asteroid Dust. But nasa is now ready to reveal more, and the hope is a treasure trove lies inside. Rebecca morelle, bbc news. What is inside the capsule . It is going to be fascinating finding out, and i think that is this afternoon. Four oclock this afternoon, theyre going to open the box. I hope they have got enough stuff in there. It is microscopic, but they are going to be studying it all over the world for ages. To be studying it all over the world forages. Fascinating to be studying it all over the world for ages. Fascinating to see. Carol has news a bit of change coming on the weather. That is right. By the end of this week we will be talking about frost and even some snow on the mountains of scotland. What a change compared to what some of us have been used to. It has been a very mild october so farfor the bulk to. It has been a very mild october so far for the bulk of the country, not everywhere, of course. It is a chilly start in montrose this morning, and what we have is a Weather Front sinking south, and behind that we are seeing fresher conditions. But if you are just stepping out in london, currently it is 18 degrees, 17 in cardiff, 15 in blackpool, but in aviemore it is a nippy six degrees. We have this Weather Front and draped across england and wales, and there is a Weather Warning out from the met office for this. That rain will not get into the far south until later. The wind is still coming from a mild south westerly direction, but as we push into Northern Ireland, Northern England and scotland, dry and bright weather with some sunshine, with the brisk wind coming from the north west, which is a cooler direction blowing in a fair few showers to the north and also the west. And we are looking at gales at times across the Northern Isles. That is reflected in the temperatures, ten to about 18 degrees behind the Weather Front, but still mild or warm head of it. Through this evening and overnight, eventually the Weather Front takes its rain and cloud down towards the south of england where some parts havent seen rain for some time. To the north, we are looking at Clearer Skies, the showers and wind tending to ease, and it is going to be cold enough tonight for a touch of frost in sheltered glens across scotland, Northern England and also Northern Ireland. We are hanging on to the milderair in the ireland. We are hanging on to the milder air in the south, just a little bit longer. But then it is all change. You have been warned, thank you . After being appointed the uks poet laureate, Simon Armitage pledged to put the environment at the heart of his work. Earlier this year, he travelled to the arctic to see first hand the impact Climate Change is having and to write new poems in response. Lets take a listen. When i met the glazierface to face, there was no coming together of skin and ice, just the cloud floating upside down in the silver lake, and the eyes looking up from the water were mine. It was a hard slog, in a valley more like a scottish glen, along hillsides more at home in the english lakes, a days trek up a narrow track between herr bell and birch, and to do what . Between ha rebell between harebell and birch. It gave the glazier a human form, body, mouth and heart. In any event, i was too late. Looking up from the milky pool too late. Looking up from the milky pool, i saw rightness in retreat, trailing a stony path. When i met the glacier face to face, there was no encounter of ancient snow and body heat, just weepy clouds and do what she sky hanging upside down on a zinc coloured lake, and the eyes staring out of the water were mine. The poetry and pictures of Simon Armitage on his trip to the arctic, and hejoins us now. This is the first time you have ever been there. This is very exciting, im a geography graduate and a northerner, so it has always been interested in going further in that direction. Literally the north coast of iceland is the furthest i had got, so it was the first time inside the arctic circle, and it is a staggeringly beautiful place. I have always said that poetry is the art form of concentration, and it is our obligation not to say the first thing that comes into our heads, but i wanted to write the poems there, because i wanted the recording in situ, and to be part of the acoustic of the arctic, so yes, ijumped straight in and got on with it. The military says it has been recovering the bodies of whole families, including several children, following an attack by hamas in one Israeli Village. Our correspondent nick beake reports from israel. We could see the plumes of black smoke rising. The artillery is constantly going out into the direction of gaza. Earlier defence secretary grant shapps told us what kind of support the uk is providing for israel. Its very important that other countries and other regions dont think its a good idea to get involved here so far thats been limited in nature. We have asked the Israeli Government to let us know what they need, and again we continue to talk to them about that. But i thinkjust the scale of what has now been revealed, what happened, the indiscriminate nature, means that what israel needs most of all is reassurance that the world is with them and that we give them absolutely. Defence secretary grant shapps speaking a short time ago. Lets take you live to gaza and, as we heard a few moments ago, the situation in gaza right now, here you can see it quite clearly, the scene of destruction. Smoke through the sky. We have heard from the International Committee of the red cross this morning, saying that at the moment there is only four hours of electricity per day in gaza. People are concerned about their children. They also say the influx of wounded people to medical facilities is unfortunately only increasing. And of course we will keep you right up to date with the situation throughout the morning here on the programme. More of the days news. Some major disruption to flights to start with. All flights have been suspended at Luton Airport until three oclock this aftenoon after a huge fire caused one of its multistorey car parks to collapse. Five people have been taken to hospital after breathing in smoke. Greg mckenzie has been there through the night for bbc breakfast. Oh, my god huge flames and smoke billowing from the terminal 2 car park. If you go to the bbc news website, all the information you need is constantly being updated if you are affected by those delays. The Labour Party Conference comes to an end today. Sir Keir Starmers speech was briefly interrupted yesterday after a protestor poured glitter all over him. Our chief Political Correspondent Henry Zeffman is in liverpool for us this morning. We spoke to sir keir starmer earlier and he was keen to move on from the glitter and talk politics and policy instead. It really could have derailed his instead. It really could have derailed his speech. Instead. It really could have i derailed his speech. Watching it, it was quite an extraordinary moment because, as you are discussing with keir starmer earlier, he does have round the clock protection and so it was pretty shocking, surprising to say the least, that this man was able to rush the stage and stand near keir starmer and apprehended for a few seconds he was not apprehended. Keir starmer rolled his sleeves up, took off his jacket and got on with the most important speech he has done so far. What i was struck by it he made a kind of emotional argument to the country for why he should be Prime Minister. He talked about healing the nation. That is quite unusual language for any politician, let alone a politician who people often criticised for being a bit of a technocrat. One of the things that we didnt get from keir starmer wasnt that long laundry list of policies that some people in his party, though not all, have been urging him to come up with. I think when he spoke to you earlier he gave a bit of a sense that he wants his offer to the public to be much more streamlined than labours offer was in 2019. I have to say, though, even by those standards, even with those caveats, it went down really well and talking to people last night, i have to say, the mood here is that a party that hasnt won a general election for 18 years is starting to think that it might be on the brink of government once again. {lila might be on the brink of government once aaain. ,. The independent Monitoring Board at Wandsworth Prison has found that a severe shortage of available staff is undermining efforts to run the jail effectively. The board drew its conclusions before the alleged escape by Daniel Khalife last month. The tv presenter Holly Willoughby has announced she is quitting the itv show this morning after iii years. It comes just days after a man appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged plot to kidnap her. Questions are now being raised regarding the future of the programme. It is 18 minutes past eight. What is happening is it will turn colder, there will be night time frosts, and some snow on the tops of the hills in scotland by the tops of the hills in scotland by the time we get the weekend. The other change the rain. We havent seen rain across some parts of Southern England for some time. This Weather Watcher shows it is falling already in derbyshire. That rain is quite heavy as it moves across wales, in particular we could have as much as 60 millimetres on Higher Ground in a short amount of time, which could lead to some impact. The Southern England, dry. Some sunshine, variable cloud compass some fog across the south west. Northern england, Northern Ireland and scotland, also a lot of dry weather but blustery showers coming in on a north westerly wind across the north and west and they will persist as we go through the day. It will also be very windy with gales at times across the Northern Isles but it will brighten up across Northern England as we go through the afternoon. Temperatures ten to 18 degrees behind the Weather Front, but we are still in the warmer conditions as we push down towards the far south. Through this evening and overnight, eventually the rain band makes it into Southern England. Some mist and fog wrapped in amongst it. Among clear skies, showers easing, winds easing, some patchy mist around but these temperatures represent towns and cities. In rural areas it will be colder, cold enough in some parts of the north for a touch of frost. We stuck tomorrow with cloud, patchy light rain and drizzle in southern areas, that will ease through the day and we can see a lot of dry weather. Brisk winds, winds picking up through the course of the day and temperatures again slipping all the way south and then it turns even colder as we head into the weekend. Thank you very much. I know you had nick owen on a few weeks ago and if he is watching, send all my best, and thanks to him because it is people familiar, may be from the tv screen, or a friend at the pub, that really triggers the thought that, oh, maybe i should get checked. That is what happened with me. Nicks experience resonated with me. Nicks experience resonated with me. I had a good friend in the village who had a sort of random examination, you know, nothing scheduled, and it came up with a big prostate problem. He had an urgent operation so we all went off and got checked. My reading was a bit high but, being a bloke, oh, we can deal with that, thats fine, no problems, no symptoms. My wife, thankfully, is far more sensible and far more tuned into these things so we went off and went through the examination procedure and a couple of x rays and so on and then a biopsy, as well. And by that time i was pretty well tuned in to the whole system, so i pitched up onjeff stellings charity walk in memory of our good friend bill turnbull, who wasnt so lucky. We did that walk to wycombe and met a lot of people going through the same experience. This was onl a through the same experience. This was only a few through the same experience. It is all contained within the prostate so it gives you the opportunity to have significant surgery, cure the whole thing that way. If it becomes more advanced, then the future is a bit more bleak for people, but we have managed to catch it in time, the surgery it will really knock this on the head and that is the message out there at the moment, so lucky. The Community Security trust, a charity which helszewish people in the uk with security, says theyre concerned it will get worse every time theres conflict in the middle east, jews in london suffer verbal abuse, and theres graffiti, and theres damage to property. Thats already happened this time around from saturday morning through to now when were having this conversation, and it will continue and there will probably be physical violence, as well. Lets take a look at the tubes now and theres a good service on the tubes this morning apart from minor delays on the district line. Now onto the weather with kate kinsella. Good morning. Now for tomorrow, low pressure just starts to move in from the west, pushing that front back across us so well see further spells of rain. It is going to be cloudy. Now, as we head into the weekend, overnight, thursday into friday, some heavy rain thats going to linger into friday, but eventually clearing. As we head through the weekend, High Pressure builds. Israeli Defence Forces have shared details of a massacre of civilians which was uncovered after they regained control of a village attacked by hamas. The group, which is designated as a Terror Organisation by many western governments including the uk, began its assault on saturday morning, killing both soldiers and civilians across the country. Since then, more than 1,200 people have died in israel, and more than 900 have been killed in gaza. Details have emereged of the massacre in one Israeli Village where soldiers say some of the dead had been beheaded, including children. Elsewhere, hamas launched a fresh Rocket Attack on Southern Israel after warning people to leave the city of ashkelon. In response, israel has continued to bomb gaza one bbc reporter there said it was the worst bombing he had seen in 20 years. Relatives of israelis thought to have been taken into gaza as hostages have spoken about their last contacts with their loved ones. They were pulled out alive and have been dragged out, so i think the fact that they were pulled out alive and not shot on sight like many others on the kibbutz, it gives us this hope that they are, which is a strange word to say in these circumstances, but that they are captured rather than dead. We wanted to bring you up to date on another story that we have been covering over the last few weeks. Its been a month since schools in england were forced to delay reopening, after it was revealed they were affected by the faulty concrete, raac. While some schools were able to find temporary solutions, many pupils are still learning from home as our education correspondent hazel shearing reports. Drop off time at St Leonards Catholic School in durham. But while the parents are here, many of their children are at home. The government says its safer for them to be there because this school has a dangerous type of concrete known as raac. Were not privy to a lot of the timescale issues, which is why were here, but its not good enough for our children. Their socialisation alone never mind their education on top of that and their opportunities that could be predicted from that are being disadvantaged. For pupils who have been coming in, lessons have been far from normal in recent weeks. So were using the sports hall, theres this block this 1880 block, which is a bit ironic, isnt it . The oldest block thats fine you know, theres no raac in there whatsoever. Im hopeful that, over the next few weeks, well gradually see an increase in face to face, and by after half term, well have all the children back in some sort of face to face learning. Thats the hope for elliot, who has just started at st leonards. Hed been excited to join the football team, but now its keepy uppies between lessons at home. Some of the time, anyway. When its break time i normallyjust sit down and watch youtube in bed. More than 150 children are in this online lesson all with their cameras off. Only the teacher speaks. This ifeel quite isolated because im always staring at a screen for six hours a day. Ifeel a lack of human interaction. What you going to be learning each of the days . St leonards is one of 174 schools in england confirmed to have raac last month and one of 2a where the government said some pupils had been learning remotely. He was really looking forward to going in and building on those relationships, and obviously not being able to do that or not being able to do that in a normal setting in the normal way has really had an impact on him forming those bonds as hes moving into secondary school. Raac isnt the only issue most of Aylesford School in warwick is closed because of asbestos found during fire safety work in the summer. So if we walk down here. A bit of light. And this is the furthest extent we can go now no further. So beyond this are you canjust see the remaining science labs run through there. So if i show you out here, these are the tennis courts, and thats where theyre going to put around 18 temporary classrooms. This school cant get a raac survey until the asbestos is cleared. Its on the department for educations complex case list. The dfe says its giving caseworkers and funding to schools in england. The resources are beyond us. Were educators were not project managers, were not builders, were not specialists. So we have to have that help and we need it quickly. So maybe go with not because that might be. Down the road, year 11 pupil scarlett is just back from school. Shes in one of the year groups allowed back in. But her younger brotherjacob has been learning in the kitchen with some of his friends whose parents are out at work. Its a juggling act for mum jules, who runs a spray tan business from home. Problem is, now, this is affecting such a small minority of children that they are the forgotten kids. Theyve had the two years of covid, theyve had the teacher strike days, and now we arent thought about because nobody else is going through this. Unless youre living in this right now, you do not understand what is going on. With every school day that draws to a close, the reality for some parents is that they are running out of patience. Hazel shearing, bbc news. And we will keep an eye on that in the months to come. Johnny is here to talk about var. It is how you clear up the mess of the decision that went wrong in that Liverpool Tottenham match and restore a bit of faith, notjust in the referees but in the var which really failed to intervene in that situation. It is about the changing of communication between referees and the video assistant referee, which hopefully will rectify the situation. Good morning. Howard webb, the head of the referees body the pgmol, says their reputation has been badly damaged but that changes have been made to avoid another costly mistake theres already been a change in the language referees will use to commumicate when reviewing incidents. It was human error that cost liverpool that goal against tottenham, despite the check by var. Audio recordings were released with referees and var back in the spotlight. Manchester united have plenty to do in the away leg of their Womens Champions League qualifier with Paris Saint Germain after their one all draw last night two time finalists psg dominated the first half and Tabitha Chawinga put them ahead soon after the break but united managed to move up a gear and new signing Melvine Malard equalised to make it two goals in her first two games. Dawid malan was the star of the show as he hit a brilliant 1110, as england posted 364 from their 50 overs. In reponse, bangladesh never looked like reaching the target, reece topley took four wickets before sam curran sealed the win by 137 runs. Theyll face afghanistan next in delhi on sunday. Wigan warriors back bevan french won the man of steel award, sinead pinch of york valkyrie the womens award, while lewis king of london roosters became the first ever recipient of the wheelchair player of the year award. He was paralysed in 2009 after suffering a blood clot on his spine and says the sport has given him a sense of purpose. To be here as a wheelchair player, when they call out the name and did the highlight, i sometimes think back when i first got into the sport and it makes me feel quite emotional sometimes because i got into this sport as part of rehabilitation going through a traumatic life changing industry. So proud and grateful, and i hope that the players that follow on watch us in the young kids growing up, i hope they will be watching tonight and watching the game, and i look forward to where the game is going in the future. An incredible story, and a just reward for what he has been through, and a success. We have another inspirational story for you right now. You will remember henry fraser. He was left paralysed from the shoulders down, after an accident on holiday in 2009, when he was just 17 years old. But since his injury hes gone on to inspire many people with his positive outlook on life. Hes become a successful artist, after learning to paint using only his mouth and now his story is being told on the west end. Tim muffett has been to meet him and the cast. Since his accident, henry has been paralysed from the shoulders down. The very first day i was put into a wheelchair, just sobbing and crying uncontrollably, and all i wanted to do is hug my mum and i couldnt even do that, which made things a million times worse. And it was that night i was just lying in bed and i think ijust, you know, ithought, well, theres no point me kind of being sad or angry about this ijust need to get on with it. Its an honour, first of all, quite a responsibility. But its also an absolute joy. And also, if im honest, i there is a sense of a little bit of sadness that its taken this long. I i was the kind i who gave up easily. I always defined my pre accident life by my physicality, by sport, by being in the gym. Whereas now i kind of had to completely reverse that. Thats going to get that physical strength and put it in my head and just look at life and approach life in a completely new way. Wouldnt be able to do these things and enjoy life as much as i am now had i not had the accident. Little things. That mean the big things to me. He is amazing, and that is the name of the show. The little big things is at londons soho Place Theatre until march. It is 8. 48 exactly. Carol is with us in the studio this morning, and there is news of a change in the weather, getting a little chillier. That is right, especially by the weekend, we will have tops, and possibly snow over the tops of the hills and mountains in scotland. We have had no rainfall in some parts of Southern England, but 130 millimetres of rainfall in aberdeenshire. That is more than you would expect for the whole of october, the average for october. The other thing that is going to change, it is going to turn much cooler. That will happen already from the north of the country, behind this Weather Front which is continuing to slip southwards, and it is heaviest at the moment across parts of wales, but it will get into the far south of england until later in the day. The north of that is sunshine and showers, blustery showers and gales at times across the Northern Isles, so you can see the Northern Isles, so you can see the cooler air coming south, but still the warmer conditions in the south. As we head through the evening and overnight, that rain will continue to push steadily down towards the south of england. They will be Clearer Skies behind it, the wind and showers will ease, a little patchy mist dotted here and there, and it will be a cold night, especially the further north that you are. These temperatures indicate what you can expect in towns and cities. In rural areas, what you can expect in towns and cities. In ruralareas, Northern England, Northern Ireland and scotland we will wake up to a touch of frost but not so across Southern England and wales. Tomorrow we start off with the cloud, rain and drizzle easing off through the course of the day, and the wind is picking up across the far north west of the country. Temperatures tomorrow behind that Weather Front are slipping. We have lost the 20s and we are back down to 17 best. Carol, thank you. You havent said brrrr yet today, but are we there yet . Almost from kayaking the entire length of the amazon to waltzing across the strictly dance floor, tv presenter, Helen Skelton isnt one to shy away from a challenge.
