In the opening minutes of his speech, keir starmer said he utterly condemned the senseless murder of Men Women And Children including british citizens In Cold Blood by the terrorists of hamas. And not entirely unrelated he insisted, weve dragged this party back into service no longer a party of protest, a party of service. This was his first speech as leader of the opposition heading into a general election and, like the Shadow Chancellor before him, the message was enonomic growth, hand in hand with a promise to clear the nhs backlong, to build one and a half million new homes and create new towns, but he was short on timescale. Also, leaning on Gordon Browns commission of the future of the uk in pursuit of cementing the union, he talked about scotland leading the way to a Labour Government, adding, we must earn every vote but again no timescale for the much vaunted elected Second Chamber in place of the lords. He says hes got to be blair, wilson and attlee all in one. If anyone can do it, keir can. I mean, that was the speech of his life. But for my money, it was the speech of our lives. I dont remember ever hearing a speech so inspiring. The emotional moments, the high points, the reminder of what this country has gone through. And praise from some labour giants. I thought it was great. And i thought it was Prime Ministerial. You know, he identified the problems that we all know were facing. He showed hed thought about them. He put forward ideas about what we can do. But most of all, he stressed that its not going to be easy. I mean, he told people the hard truths. I think hes a winner. What matters is whether the british people make him so. My assessment of the speech is that it was both the hardest and the best Leader Speech ive heard in 20 years. I mean hardest, because keir faced a basinload of scepticism about him. What did he believe in . Hes got no idea. Doesnt stand for anything. All the usual stuff. Why best . Best, i think because he showed a combination of passion, of conviction, but also a plan for taking our country forward. Theres a good chance this will be keir starmer� s last Conference Speech before the general election, and so he needed to fire up his troops. Well, he certainly did that, but he also needed to speak to the country, reassure voters that its safe to vote labour, but also offer them a positive vision to encourage them to vote labour.
