Thank you, conference sir keir starmer giving his Keynote Speech at the Labour Conference which is being held in liverpool. Our correspondent is there and was listening in. Do you get the sense that he answered the question, why labour . ,. ,. Labour . Ultimately, that is a. Uestion labour . Ultimately, that is a question for labour . Ultimately, that is a question for voters. Labour . Ultimately, that is a question for voters. But labour . Ultimately, that is a question for voters. But i labour . Ultimately, that is a question for voters. But i do | labour . Ultimately, that is a question for voters. But i do think that was a real attempt by sir keir starmer to sketch out more of the optimistic reasons for voting for the labour party. Strikingly he was talking directly to the country when he said there was a need to heal, when he said people were looking at the labour party and that he thought it would take ambition and bravery to deliver the decade of National Renewal that he is pledging. The key part of that speech, the bit that labour hopes will resonate with the electorate, was the whole section where he talked about trying to start Rebuilding Houses in the uk. He talked about building 1,000,000 and a half houses over the next parliament, that 300,000 or so a year. That has been part of Labour Plasma Pitch to the electorate at the next election. Finding parts of the next election. Finding parts of the green belt that can be reclassified and making it easier to build there. Taking on what he called the blockers and fighting the blockers. The bit i found really interesting about housing in particular was when he said he was prepared to have that fight. We have talked a lot about House Building over the past two years, the conservatives have had big pledges on it as well, but the question has always been as there a political leader who can take on those fights and he is trying to persuade voters that he is the man to do that. Also i thought really interesting that he flagged up and said something the Shadow Chancellor said yesterday which is that labour wants to fight this election on the issue of the economy. Traditionally an issue where a lot of people thought the conservatives had a bit of the front foot but labour now thinks after everything thats happened with the economy that it can take that fight to the government and say we are the Party Offering more of a plan for economic growth. But ultimately what that speech was supposed to do is three things. It was supposed to persuade voters that sir keir starmer was serious about power. That he could reassure them that he could be Prime Minister. It was supposed to persuade them that the tide was turning, that this was a moment in british politics where they could be a real change. And it was him to be starting, not setting out the whole manifesto, but starting to sketch out what would be at the heart of his offer to the electorate in the next General Election. ~ electorate in the next General Election. ,. , electorate in the next General Election. , g , electorate in the next General Election. He said on that. Labours key argument. He said on that. Labours key argument, the he said on that. Labours key argument, the thread he said on that. Labours key argument, the thread that i he said on that. Labours key l argument, the thread that was running through that speech was that significant parts of the country are not working properly. The conservatives he argues are responsible for that. And labour are the only ones who can offer the real change that is needed to move the country forward. He talked at length about House Building, that was the key new thing in that speech he wanted to say, we are prepared to build new towns and take on vested interests to build 1. 5 million new homes over the course of the next few years. That is the big pitch that he is making to the electorate. What i think he was also trying to do was trying to show a bit of passion and a bit of fight, to say here is who i am, here is what i care about and here is the upbringing ive had and here is what i think its really important to the country and here is howl i think its really important to the country and here is how i plan to deliver on the changes i am promising. We are not standing here this afternoon with a full prospectus from the labour party. They will be some people come away from that speech and go, i want to hear more from keir starmer. The labour party would say there are still year to go until the General Election. But the crucial thing that sir keir starmer wanted to do was to say we are ahead in the polls but whats the positive case i am trying to make for the labour party in power . Its up to voters to decide whether hes done that but i suspect his argument will be that hes put on the table the things he really cares about, the thread thats going to take labour through the next year orso to take labour through the next year or so in the run up to a General Election, and its going to be about some of the problems the country is faced with the pandemic, economic challenges, that its prepared labour to rebuild. Labour to rebuild. There was prolonged labour to rebuild. There was prolonged applause labour to rebuild. There was prolonged applause when i labour to rebuild. There was j prolonged applause when sir labour to rebuild. There was prolonged applause when sir keir starmer made his comments on Anti Semitism and israel. Apart from being a reaction to what happened i antisemitism and israel. Apart from being a reaction to what happened in| being a reaction to what happened in israel over the last few days, it a very deliberate stance sir keir starmer has taken. To say the labour party has changed under my leadership. It very different to the party Thatjeremy Corbyn led. When they were all those questions about whether the party was taking Anti Semitism seriously. I want to bring in a guest, pullover, the General Secretary the tuc. Can i just ask first and foremost, do you think you got enough of a vision from sir keir starmer . Was that the prospectus you are looking for . Absolutely and more importantly working absolutely and more importantly Working Class people will see the passion Working Class people will see the passion he brought that speech today but also passion he brought that speech today but also a passion he brought that speech today but also a very clear vision to make the world but also a very clear vision to make the world of but also a very clear vision to make the world of work better for a proper the world of work better for a proper industrial strategy, to rebuild proper industrial strategy, to rebuild this country. A big part of that speech was rebuild this country. A big part of that speech was housebuilding i rebuild this country. A big part of i that speech was housebuilding and that speech was House Building and talking about 1. 5 million new homes. A lot of people who might be thinking ive had a lot of pledges on House Building over the last two years. Why is this more believable than what weve heard already . Whether its House Building, his prospectus will come of it is about setting prospectus will come of it is about setting out genuine ambitions for the british people and the country. He has the british people and the country. He has tapped into this sense that over the he has tapped into this sense that over the last 13 years there as and aspect over the last 13 years there as and aspect of over the last 13 years there as and aspect of our public realm or our economy aspect of our public realm or our economy that is better now than it was 13 economy that is better now than it was 13 years ago. We had 13 years and if the that for one moment. The change has got to come done it by now. The change has got to come and done it by now. The change has got to come and for me a General Election to come and for me a General Election cannot come soon enough. You have election cannot come soon enough. You have a election cannot come soon enough. You have a leader of the tuc which is the Umbrella Body of unions in the uk. Some Union Leaders think sir keir starmer isnt being bold enough needs to go further. Do you think he will be bowled over the next year . Every union leader in the country will be every union leader in the country will be agreed on one point, we need a labour will be agreed on one point, we need a Labour Government. Of course shes ambitious a Labour Government. Of course shes ambitious for a Labour Government. Of course shes ambitious for him and is thats right ambitious for him and is thats right and ambitious for him and is thats right. And i think his speech today was ambitious for people. Talking about was ambitious for people. Talking about smashing classes and talking about about smashing classes and talking about building those new homes and prosperity about building those new homes and prosperity in every part of the country prosperity in every part of the country. After 13 years of Falling Standards country. After 13 years of Falling Standards the British Public need that change. Standards the British Public need that change that change. Soon enough. T hank cant come sooner. Soon enough. Thank you cant come sooner. Soon enough. Thank you for cant come sooner. Soon enough. Thank you for talking to us. As you can see, people are piling out after that speech and its getting rather busyin that speech and its getting rather busy in liverpool. But the big question i think is going to be asked after sir keir starmer s speech is what is the vision look like an everyday terms . The 1. 5 million houses that have been promised as a big deal to people who want to buy a house for rent but backin want to buy a house for rent but back in 2019 we were talking about the conservatives also offering that vision of 1. 5 million new houses in the second part of the 20 20s. So there is that question about deliverability. The Argument Labour Make and ive heard it for the past two weeks but crystallised by sir keir starmer there is that they are prepared to take on the fight and make the changes that would need to happen to deliver those homes by changing some Planning Rules like for example reclassifying some of the green belt in england to make sure that more houses can be built. That again sounds good but one of the questions that is always asked is when people turn up and say i dont want that tower block year, are you going to overrule them or tell them it has to happen . Lets try and figure out some of those details with someone from the Shadow Cabinet. I have Yvette Cooper with me, the shadow home secretary. Let me, the shadow home secretary. Let me ask you specifically about House Building. 1. 5 million new homes overfive years. House building. 1. 5 million new homes over five years. It sounds familiar and something the conservatives have been promising. What in concrete terms are you prepared to do that is different to Make It Happen . I know that really frustrates Labour Strategists because they say people dont want balde offerings just now, they want stability. But do you think what he has delivered over the past hour is enough to excite the public and stop people thinking maybe we will give labour a try by default to actually be enthusiastic . I think people want security back because i think people want security back because everybody has felt so insecure because everybody has felt so insecure as a result of whats been happening insecure as a result of whats been happening in recent years and they want to happening in recent years and they want to be happening in recent years and they want to be able to build a Better Future want to be able to build a Better Future. Sir keir starmer giving his Keynote Speech at the Labour Conference which is being held in liverpool. He started off with a little bit of drama. You can see some of the glitter on his shirt, a demonstrator actually climbed onto the stage and through that glitter over him. There was a slight delay to the speech. The demonstrator we understand and the group taking responsibility for that i called people demand democracy. That demonstrator was bundled out of the conference hall. There is video circulating on social media of him being put into a police than. Nick ardley has been at the conference for the study. Its fascinating how quickly this Party Started to change. Jeremy corbyn used to get an amazing reception, an almost unprecedented reception. Sir keir starmer now gets a similar reception. He really does have a huge amount of support in this party and i think in part thats because of the Optimism Labour might be heading for power miles ahead in the polls, winning big by elections. You heard the sense of cautious optimism from sir keir starmer saying he tide was turning but they still had to fight for every vote. We heard it from Yvette Cooper there as well. I want to talk to another person was in the whole, the former labour mp tracey raymond. A big part of that pitch is devolving powers to people like you in the local maize in england.
