Fighting on israeli soil after Retaking Areas which hamas gunmen had been holding. It has now been ordered to begin a complete siege of gaza, which would cut off supplies of food, fuel, electricity, and also water. Hamas continues to launch missiles from inside gaza at israeli towns. Its Military Wing has threatened to start killing hostages, of which there are thought to be more than 100, if israel bombs more civilian houses in gaza without giving a warning. The numbers killed on both sides continue to rise. About 900 people have died in israel since the Surprise Attack was launched on saturday. Palestinian sources say that almost 700 people have been killed in gaza by israeli air strikes. Israel air strikes have continued through the night in gaza. Israel says it has struck around 2,500 sites linked to hamas. This is the scene live in gaza on tuesday morning. As you can see, smoke rising and gaza is waking up after another night of pummelling. 0ur international editor, jeremy bowen, is in Southern Israel and he sent us this report on the violence and bloodshed on both sides of the border. Inside gaza, it looks every bit as if palestinians are feeling the full force of Israeli Military power. Israel says hamas is responsible for the suffering of gazas civilians. And its retaliation for the hamas attack has only just begun. Hamas has threatened to start killing its israeli hostages. The air strikes rolled on, hour after hour. Palestinian armed groups, undeterred, kept up their own barrage of israel. 0ur bbc team was in ashkelon in Southern Israel, not far from the gaza border when a salvo came in. Ashkelon is so close to gaza that there is no more than a ten second warning. Israel is moving in more fire power. The next stage of the offensive against hamas looks certain to be a Ground Offensive, much bigger than other incursions since hamas took over in gaza in 2007. Lines of cars outside a Military Base on the road to gaza were parked by reservists as they reported for duty, getting ready, saying their goodbyes. Parents came to the base for a few minutes with their sons. We are praying and hope for the best. Amidst tough times now. And we are telling him to try and concentrate on his mission, without thinking too much about other friends that got injured or killed. Israels Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu broadcast to his nation. He said hamas has made a mistake of historic proportions. We will, he said, be exacting a price that we be remembered by them and other enemies for decades. And now israelis are waiting for the government and army to act. Sderot, the israeli town close to gaza littered with the debris of war felt like the essence of israels trauma, almost deserted except for forces. Hamas has rocketed sderot for years but has never before stormed in. At the centre of the hamas Killing Ground was the police station. They broke in and used it as a fire base to shoot civilians as well as soldiers. Blood from israels dead and wounded smears the walls. Even here in what is always a front line town, for israelis, this was not supposed to happen. They expected their military, backed up by the intelligence services, to protect them. And the fact that that didnt happen means recriminations about who might be responsible have already started. But at the same time there is a strong sense of national unity, with a country under attack, about what happens next. In the places that hamas attacked Israeli Military as well as the few civilians left are jumpy, still shocked. A Ground Offensive didnt feel imminent. And in gaza, a few miles away, casualties come into the main hospital. The first few hundred of many more. It will get worse. Palestinians and israelis once more caught on the anvil of war in a conflict a century old that is as deadly it has ever been. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, ashkelon. Hamas has continued to fire rockets into israel. Israel says as many as four and a half thousand have been launched since saturday, although many have been intercepted by israels iron dome air defence system. The Israeli Military has been carrying out Missile Strikes and air raids in gaza where there is effectively no way of stopping the projectiles. As you can see from this video, several strikes can take place at the same time. Israel said that by late on monday, about 2,500 sites linked to hamas had been hit. The Military Action is being combined with Israeli Forces cutting off gaza, which is likely to lead to shortages of electricity, food, fuel, and other supplies. 0ur colleague Rushdi Abualouf is in gaza. Its too dangerous for him and his team to broadcast from there live, but he sent us this update late on monday night. This is by far the biggest ever israeli air strikes in gaza, on this scale, in this intensity. This is the biggest. In this building, its a Seven Storey Building where 20 to 30 families, they live in this building. I could hear the screaming of the kids, they were shouting. In the background, if you can see, its totally black. Most of the Electricity Supplies in gaza are not functioning, internet is down in every corner of this city. Talking about the humanitarian situation, gaza has been suffering for three days without electricity. The crossings, most of the crossings are closed except the rafah crossing with egypt, and it only allows people to go in and out no goods. No fuel is coming, no medicine for hospitals. The Health Ministry issued a Statement Today warning that within 48 hours the essential medical supplies are running out in the hospital. Nearby explosion and they need urgent supplies to be able to provide services to many people. I could hear in the background israeli fighter jets are still flying overhead and targeting places between time to time and it seems that this night, the palestinians in gaza have never seen before. The armed wing of hamas has threatened to start killing the hostages it is holding in gaza if israel bombs what hamas says are civilian houses there without prior warning. Israel has said it is only targeting hamas, and warnings are being sent to the civilian population. Many of the hostages were taken from a music festival, which was attacked by hamas gunmen on saturday. As many as 260 people were killed there. This video appears to show members of hamas capturing people at gunpoint. Hamas claims 100 soldiers and civilians have been taken. The fate of those captives is not known, but hamas says that israeli air strikes you can see the aftermath of one here have led to the deaths of some of them. Lets hear now from a witness to the attack on that music festival, Israeli Soldier ephraim mordechayev. When we saw the terrorists, the panic started because we understood that we were in a situation thats much, much bigger than thought. And a situation where there is someone that 20 or ten metres from you with guns and trying to kill you. The car was driving, we call the likes or cars with dead people. In a situation we understood we needed to escape and to anything that we could do. There was a couple of guns i saw in my eyes, the first was an automatic. I did not see the snipers but i heard the snipers. 100 , iwas snipers but i heard the snipers. 100 , i was a sniper commander, i know how it is had. Rpg is, imagine yourself using a rocket that is meant to fire on houses or tanks, fired on a group of 20 civilians. And machine guns, i saw machine guns, i saw machine guns on the vehicles. There was a parachutist from the sky. There were rockets that came on us. This is what i saw. It wasnt just people at the festival who were taken by hamas militants. A kibbutz close to the border with gaza was also attacked. This footage was posted on social media and it shows yaffar adva, an 85 year old woman who lived there, being taken into gaza. Her granddaughter, avda, spoke to us about the kidnapping. 0n on saturday around 8am we lost contact with my grandmother. She lives in a kibbutz which is on the border with gaza. She sent us a message, writing to us that there was a Terrorist Shooting and shouting at us in the streets. Thats the last message we got. We have other family that lives in the kibbutz so we heard from them all the time about the horrible things that are going on there, that the terrorists are getting to houses, killing people, hurting them, burning their houses while they were sitting there, taking them hostage, and we could not reach my grandmother. And then at 5pm after the idf Got Into The Kibbutz and started taking people, they went to my grandmothers house that was completely broken and she was not there. We tried to find some videos because we heard that some terrorists from gaza posted videos of people they kidnapped, and we found a video of her being taken away to gaza with four armed men around her. It is heartbreaking. It hurts in every part of our body. We are worried. We are crazy worried about her. My grandmother is ill and she takes medicine every day. We dont know how long she can survive without her medicine. We do know that every day without her medicine she suffers from a lot of pain. We arejust suffers from a lot of pain. We are just praying that she will be back home with us. Lets look now at the latest reaction from around the world to the fighting in israel and gaza. Several countries have issued statements in support of israel, including the uk, the us, france, italy and germany. In a joint statement, they said the Terrorist Actions of hamas have no justification, and they would support israel in its efforts to defend itself against such atrocities. President biden chaired a meeting of his National Security council, and Israeli Military leaders were invited to discuss regional deterrence with us chiefs at the pentagon. The white house also confirmed that at least 11 american citizens have been killed and several others are thought to have been taken hostage by hamas. Mr biden will make a speech about israel today at 1 00pm washington time. Well bring you that live on bbc news when it happens. Live now to our north america correspondent, shingai nyoka, in washington. We had just mentioned that the president is making a speech later about israel. What is the message that we can expect . Well, we dont really expect his message to change. 0ver well, we dont really expect his message to change. Over the last few days, both President Biden and senior white house officials have said over and over again that they will absolutely, unequivocally support israel. Theyve also strongly condemned hamas and, on monday, we heard the senior white house officials referring to hamas as isis level savagery. I think what were likely to hear more of that we havent heard in his first address was his new priority, given the fact that us citizens are now listed as being among the dead. As you confirmed there, about 11 close to a dozen american citizens are now confirmed to have died. And the Us Government says that it presumes that others are missing. Its still working to figure out how many have been taken hostage. And so were likely to see more of an emphasis on that now. In the statement on monday, President Biden said that that would now become his top priority. As you say, President Biden and the us have taken a very strong line on this in terms of support for israel. What has the us done to back this up so far . ~. ,. ,. , far . What weve seen, or what we saw on far . What weve seen, or what we saw on monday, far . What weve seen, or what we saw on monday, was far . What weve seen, or what we saw on monday, was a we saw on monday, was a symbolic gesture. The white house lit up in israeli colours as a show of support. But, as we speak, the us is sending some serious firepower israels way. Theres a us carrier, the uss ford, which is the largest and most advanced warship, which is heading in israels direction. But the pentagon also confirmed that it is sending through airlifting equipment resources, including munitions, and that is expected in the next couple of days. But regarding this issue of the us s firepower, these support ships as well as the aircraft carrier, it says that its sending those as a deterrent to iran. But i think the question a lot of people have is how far is the United States prepared to go to support iran . Answering that question earlier on, the pentagon the most Senior DefenceOffice Spokesperson said that they would not put american boots on the ground. But that remains to be tested. I5 the ground. But that remains to be tested. , the ground. But that remains to be tested be tested. Is the question of israel something be tested. Is the question of israel something which be tested. Is the question of. Israel something which unites or divides the democrats and republicans . Republicans . Thats a really comlex republicans . Thats a really complex question, republicans . Thats a really complex question, and republicans . Thats a really complex question, and notl complex question, and not easily answered. What weve seen with the ukraine war is these very strong divisions between the republicans who believe that extreme hardline republicans who believe that support for ukraine has gone too far and that the us should not commit more money into that war. But i think theres a difference between how americans view israel and the way that they view ukraine. Theres almost a Spiritual Connection in regards to the us relations with israel. And weve seen evangelicals, for example, who are a strong base in the Republican Party urging the government to do more to support israel. And so, as the days and weeks come, were likely to see strong support but it still remains to be seen just how much money both sides will be able to agree on in terms of how they want to support israel. 0k. Thank you for now from washington. This is gaza this morning as it enters its fourth day another night of many, many missiles fired across from israel into gaza as this war between the two intensifies. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Israel has also been burying its dead among them, a 20 year old british man who was serving in the Israeli Military. Nathanel young was killed during the attack on the border with gaza. 0ur correspondent nick beake was invited to report from the funeral service. Nathanel youngs coffin was carried to mount herzl, israels national cemetery, where they grieved a londoner whod become one of their own. His family said it had always been his dream to be a front line Israeli Soldier. More than 1,000 mourners turned out. Despite pleas to stay away, so the funeral itself would not be a target. Nathanel youngs sister started to pay tribute to him. Ill see you in just a moment. Hello again. Monday felt like another warm, summers day except, of course, it wasnt summer. No, its 0ctober. Its meant to be a lot colder than this. These blue, sunny skies sent temperatures soaring, particularly across england and wales the warmest spot, east malling in kent, 26 degrees celsius. Now, average for these cities at this time of the year is 15 or 16 degrees, so ten degrees above average. Even the temperatures we had on monday were in excess of what wed see in a typicaljuly day, so thats why it felt like summer. Now, you can see the clear skies that we had across england and wales, but lurking out in the atlantic, weve got more rain bearing cloud around, and thats not good news for scotland, where we still have the bulk of the Flood Warnings in force across the nation. Its here where, of course, we saw torrential rain and flooding over the course of the weekend, and with more rain developing over the next few hours, thats not going to be exactly welcome rain that arrives. Further southwards, across england and wales, we keep those clear spells over the next few hours. One or two mist patches and a few fog patches developing, but its a mild start to the day on tuesday. I think the biggest concern, though, will continue to be this area of rain affecting scotland. In The Grand Scheme of things, 50 millimetres falling from this Weather Front over the mountains of western scotland isnt a huge amount, but given that weve got Flood Warnings already in force, the ground saturated after what fell over the weekend, then this rain could cause some further extra issues. It does trickle southwards, reaching Northern Ireland and the far north of england, as well, late tuesday afternoon. South of that, its very warm again. 0nce weve lost those mist and fog patches, temperatures could hit 2a degrees in the warmest spots. Now, tuesday night sees this band of rain pull away from scotland, so hopefully things will begin to improve here, to a degree. But weve got some heavier rain setting in place further southwards across england and wales, and this rain band through wednesday slowly moves across wales, the midlands, into east anglia, perhaps not reaching the far south until after dark, where it will continue to be warm, with temperatures in the low 20s. But otherwise, those temperatures coming back down closer to average levels for october. Now, heading into thursday, weve got some more rain moving overnight and into friday, affecting parts of england and wales. So, rain at times, probably best sums up the weather picture. That rain clears away into the weekend, with temperatures dropping back closer to the october averages. This live from london, this is bbc news. On monday, israels central bank said it would sell up to 30 billion of foreign currency in a bid to calm markets and support the countrys own currency, the shekel, which has fallen sharply. Global companies with a presence in israel have temporarily shut some operations and asked employees to work from home. And one of the biggest impacts globally has been on the oil price. Brent crude jumped yesterday on concerns the situation in israel and gaza could disrupt output from the middle east, climbing as much as 5 at one stage on monday. Heres sameer hashmi. 0il oil prices have surged due potential between israel and palestine and there are thoughts that prices could shoot up on the days and weeks to come depending on how the conflict pans out. Even though israel is not a major player in oil supplier, the worry is that if the conflict spreads to other parts of the region
