A Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the palestinians had the capacity to defend their nation without any help from tehran, which has called for an Emergency Meeting of the organisation of islamic cooperation. This is the scene live in gaza. There were plumes above the city not long ago. Militants from the Palestinian Group hamas remain inside israel fighting is ongoing at least seven locations there two days after the first mass assault on saturday. As many as 100 israeli hostages have been taken into gaza by the militants. 0ur middle east correspondent Yolande Knell reports. Explosions lighting up the night sky as israeli Missile Defence shot down incoming palestinian rockets. But not all. Homes in southern israel were hit. And in gaza, israel has been striking back. The israeli Prime Minister threatening mighty vengeance. Shouting. The scale and complexity of saturdays Surprise Attack is still becoming clear. Hamas released this footage of its armed men storming the main crossing for people from gaza entering israel. Israeli rescuers have been collecting hundreds of bodies. It is by far the worst day in israeli history. Never before have so many israelis been killed by one single thing let alone Enemy Activity on one day. If you are americans and want to compare this to something in american history, then this could be a 9 11 and a pearl harbor wrapped into one. Hamas now says its holding 100 israeli hostages like this 85 year old grandmother, yaffa adar, whisked away by militants in a golf cart. Yoni asher is begging for the safe return of his wife and two small children after they were kidnapped by gunmen while visiting in laws. I want to ask of hamas. Don t hurt them. Dont hurt little children. Dont hurt women. If you want me instead, im willing to come. Now in gaza most areas are without power after israel stopped supplying electricity. There are shortages of food and water. Tens of thousands of palestinians have fled their homes many Seeking Shelter in un schools. As israel hits back, the International Community has rushed to support its right to defend itself, but there have been warnings, too, about a growing humanitarian crisis. Israel keeps saying the blockade and repeated assaults on gaza are to destroy hamas Military Capabilities and ensure security. Clearly and expectedly, its blockade and assaults accomplished neither. And with palestinians killed in clashes with Israeli Soldiers in the occupied west bank, there are new signs of the violence spreading. Yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. As we mentioned the Israeli Defence force has said there is still continued worry of hamas militants in southern israel. Lets get more from our correspondent anna foster who is in ashkelon. Weve heard another barrage, the sounds of Explosions In The Sky here over ashkelon in southern israel. This is something that has been happening all through yesterday, through the night as well. These missiles that are being fired in large numbers from gaza, mainly being intercepted by israels iron dome system, which catches them in the sky and actually explodes those missiles before it hits the ground. It has a success rate of more than 90 , but it doesnt catch every missile. And this Apartment Block in ashkelon, as you can see, was hit in the early hours of this morning, a direct hit right into the ground floor of the Apartment Block. You can see peoples belongings, the childrens toys, furniture, everything just scattered here as people were trying to escape. This morning, ivejust been talking to a woman who lives right above there in the next floor, and she was describing how actually when this happened, she and her husband were trying to get out, but the front door was stuck and she was trying to pull it. She said she eventually had to be rescued by firefighters who came and dealt with this here. But it is something that people in this area have been seeing. You know, theres been a couple of strikes. Theres a shop right across here that was hit. Theres an Apartment Building just up there, which was also just punched through with a missile. You can see right up on the top floors there, theres a big hole where a missile met its target. Now, this is something that people here have been dealing with for quite some time now, but really not on the size and the scale that weve seen in the last 48 hours. And as well as seeing and hearing those missiles coming from gaza, of course, as you said, we are very close to gaza here and we can hear what is happening there. We can hear Israeli Defence forces striking targets in gaza. They say that this morning and overnight that they managed to strike seven hamas command posts, one command post belonging to palestinian islamichhad. And crucially, they do say that there are communities here in southern israel where there is still fighting going on, areas that theyre still trying to clear, perhaps seven or eight of them. Theyre looking to see whether there are tunnels underneath that are still enabling hamas militants to come in. And it really shows you that the size of this situation that still even now, more than 48 hours after it began, israel still is saying it doesnt quite have full control of these southern israeli communities bordering gaza. A lot of people have maybe friends or relatives in different parts of the country that theyre able to go and stay with. Some people are in hotels because they feel that the area that they live in is just not safe at the moment. Some people are having to stick it out, especially in this area of ashkelon. Its one of the poorer areas and it is one of the places where, as we were saying, there arent necessarily shelters, but people dont always have a lot of choice about where to go in a situation like this. We know that the government is planning some evacuations, they are trying to take people out of these areas who maybe want to go after what theyve seen over the last couple of days. But, you know, youre talking about big cities here around gaza. Youre talking about large communities. Youre talking about lots of people. A lot of this area has been sealed off by the military as well. Now, theres a lot of talk about whether or not israel will now go ahead and launch a ground operation into gaza. Its impossible to predict, although israel have said and the israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu has said that israels response will be significant. Weve seen Military Hardware coming into this area. We know that large parts of it have been sealed off by the military. So there is still the potential that Something Like that might happen in the next few hours, in the next few days. But right now, israel is still really considering its response, trying to secure these areas, also trying to secure the release of those hostages, as many as 130, perhaps 150 hostages. We dont know exact numbers, but the fact that people are still being held inside gaza, again, is another concern for the israeli government. Let us get some news coming on in the last few minutes from the Prime Minister rishi sunak. The Prime Minister rishi sunak. The Prime Minister has announced that he will be chairing a cobra Emergency ResponseCommittee Meeting on israel later today. Of course in the last few days the uk has come out and defended israel and the Prime Minister said israel has an absolute right to defend itself against the hamas attack and he also slammed what he the barbarity of the hamas attack on israel. Also probably another thing to be discussed is the number of britons who are in the country. We know of one confirmed death, another man is missing. The government are still working to establish the status of uk citizens in israel following that deadly attack. So a cobra emergency Committee Meeting is going to be held by the Prime Minister later on today. Now, the situation is difficult not only in israel but also in gaza. Earlier i spoke to our reporter Rushdi Abualouf. The latest air strike of five or six rockets destroyed a mosque, as we understand from local sources, in the south west of gaza city. It was a huge explosion with black smoke and dust in the skies. Still we can feel and smell the dust out of this building. This was the latest air strike and series of air strikes, over 500 air strikes the israeli army said this morning has targeted 500 places for a hamas militant group, in gaza they have been targeting mosques, infrastructure for hamas, but also according to local authority here 11 houses have been targeted. They said they hit the houses without warning killing many civilians. We understand that in rafah, Southern Gaza a funeral for 19 members of one family are about to start. Hamas Health Officials in rafah said that they were killed by an israeli air strike and all of them from one family. The official Health Ministry figure about the number of People Killed so far is a93 people and about 3,000 people injured, some of them are in a very Critical Condition according to a Health Ministry statement. They appealed for help, saying they need essential medical supplies that are running out in the hospitals. They said fuel is running out from the Hospital Generators and they said they are on the edge of a crisis. They need urgent supplies either by egypt or israel who should allow the equipment and the fuel and medicine to come into gaza. We understand that since saturday when the hamas militants infiltrated inside israel and killed 700 israelis, israel decided to stop all of the supplies to gaza and the main Border Crossing is shut so 80 of the people here dont have electricity or Internet Services for the last three days. Around the world and across the uk, youre watching bbc news. Lets go live to see the Bigger Picture in gaza. We heard from our correspondent Rushdi Abualouf and this is what we are seeing live in gaza city, on the left hand side of the screen you can see where the city meets the sea. Last night we saw the harbour on fire, various boats in the harbour on fire but what were hearing from the Israeli Defence force estate targeted hamas targets within gaza and overnight alone they have managed to hit 500 different hamas targets. These really Defence Forces spokesman today has said the military has now regained control of all communities near the gaza border, but isolated clashes are going on with active palestinian gunmen. If you remember the Israeli Defence force is did say earlier that there are still potentially palestinian gunmen in the israeli territory by the gaza border. We know there are seven or eight places inside israeli territory that are being targeted. This is a picture of a building that has been destroyed by the ids. Around 100 hostages have been taken from israel into gaza. It is believed many of them have been taken into gaza by hamas. Many of them were taken from villages and towns close to the gaza border in southern israel. Michal cohen sagi joins us now. She has had Family Members kidnapped. The last time we heard from ada, she lived in kibbutz near us and was captured in the Early Morning on saturday and ada was on Whatsapp Message with her sister from tel aviv. She said she could hear that they are inside and shes going to the safe room. And then her sister kept on asking her something and her phone went off. From that moment around 9 20am in the morning on saturday lost complete contact with her. We hope that she locked herself in the safe room while hearing the horrors that came from around, seeing hamas militants broadcasting from the kibbutz outside her house. We had no idea what was going on. It took the army many hours, over seven hours together and start fighting. Civilians being murdered, we were completely left in the dark. 0nly around four oclock in the afternoon they begged him to try and find a way into her house to rescue her. He went to her house and he couldnt find her the. Went to her house and he couldnt find herthe. He went to her house and he couldnt find her the. He found some blood on the floor and she was not there. Then hamas started Publishing Pictures and videos of people they started to take and capture as hostages and started to drive them to gaza. We have been watching these videos throughout the weekend trying to find her face within them. Most of herfriends are to find her face within them. Most of her friends are there. My Mother In Law is the most amazing person i know and she was studying arabic to speak with her neighbour, she was teaching, she was a teacher of arabic in the country of israel. She lived near the border as she knew one day there would be communication with the neighbours. That was her aim. When all of that happened the only thing im thinking, they came in, she spoke with them in arabic, she made them coffee, something, we try and stay hopeful, we need so much help to get her and the civilians out of there. Ijust her and the civilians out of there. I just heard her and the civilians out of there. Ijust heard the news in the background when i was waiting for the interview. Israel is in a massive war at the moment and there are civilians there that are vulnerable. My mother is going to be 75 years old on the 20th. She was supposed to arrive to us in london on the 12th to celebrate her birthday with her. She has allergies as i heard on the news there is no supply and no medication. We need International Help to bring the civilians, bring ada back home to us, bring the babies and the old people. This is not part of politics, this is not part of war. Israel does not negotiate, its not about civilians. I know there are captured army and there is a process and all of that, but those are civilians who have been captured, many of whom lost their family have been brutally murdered in kibbutz. It is an absolute horror. We are trying to keep myself in some sanity to get as much support as needed. We need help to get those hostages out. We need help to get ada back to us, and as much as possible for people to know. I wrote to a friend today to know. I wrote to a friend today to say my Mother In Law has been kidnapped and taken hostage. And while typing that i could not believe that those are actually real words that i typed. This is unreal and inhuman and we need help to stop that. We need help to bring the civilians back home. That. We need help to bring the civilians back home. What you think has happened civilians back home. What you think has happened to civilians back home. What you think has happened to your civilians back home. What you think. Has happened to your motherinlaw . Has happened to your Mother In Law . Where do you think she is right now . If there are tunnels they may hide them in tunnels. You know, it can be scary if they are using them as Human Shelter as they are sending missiles and israel are attacking back. There are so many scary scenarios. I hope there is some humanity in there. Seeing the videos on the pictures on the broadcast they did from the kibbutz it was difficult to see any humanity here and the stories of people who have been murdered next to their grandchildren, we are trying to hold on to some hope that there is some humanity there and they are holding them safe. We tried to get in touch through the red cross to make sure that they are safe. As i said my Mother In Law has a lot of allergies. Without her medicine is we dont know how long she would keep on. And there are many ill people there. So on my positive scenario i would say she is being kept safe with her friends, her neighbours who also captured and trying not to think about the negative scenarios that are so difficult. ,. , negative scenarios that are so difficult. , ~. , difficult. You mentioned earlier the safe room in your Mother In Law s house. It makes me think that there was always this kind of cloud of danger living in that kibbutz so close to the gaza border. They have what is called a red alert, when they receive a riddle that they have one minute and a0 seconds and the time depends on the where the alert is coming from, they could have 15 seconds to get to the safe room. Every house in the kibbutz has a safe room and there are centralised ones as well. We spent the summer on the kibbutz with my Mother In Law, she lost her husband, my beloved Father In Law just a year ago, last summer. We went to celebrate his life for the one Year Anniversary and we spent a good two weeks there with all these amazing people. We were thinking how it is 0100, it amazing people. We were thinking how it is 0 100, it can be the most peaceful place, those people who are in their 80s, they have the most calm life, they live their life, they walk the land and they rest and they walk the land and they rest and they socialise. And then it can go up they socialise. And then it can go up to 100 and they are so used to get rescued to go to another town, and pack the minimum or another location. He is a strong man and by helping so many people as a psychotherapist he is trying to be there to help everyone. He is in total shock and he is trying to keep strong. In that hope and believe that ada is out there and believe that ada is out there and soon enough we will bring her home to us and she will be with us, she will be with her grandchildren. She is only the the only grandmother my son has. We lost too much in the last few years and we want her back. Noam has been amazing, trying to keep us all strong, and evenjust looking on the lists he is in a group of all of his friends. In the kibbutz they grew up together. Its a group of kids that since they are babies, sleep at the same baby house and they grew up together, they are united, like a family, and they have a group, many of them looking for their parents, who have either been killed or taken hostage. There is only 160 people, kids, and some adults that have been rescued. The kibbutz is completely demolished, and they need to wait until it is safe to go and rebuild it. We need ada back to go and support that Amazing Community that has been hit so much and they are not the only one. There are seven or eight kibbutz to have been captured just in that area. Some have been hit really badly. It is walking distance. We have seen the video, they came in cars, they came for hostages with scooters and tricycles and walked back with them to gaza. We pray for their safety. We need support to get them back. Im we pray for their safety. We need support to get them back. Support to get them back. Im so crateful support to get them back. As you heard, some difficult stories to hear, these were people completely taken by surprise, completely taken by surprise, completely shocked, by what happened on saturday morning. Authorities in israel are saying that potentially around 100 civilians and soldiers have been taken hostage by the hamas gunmen on saturday, and many of them would have been driven into gaza where they are being held by hamas in various areas. Lets bring you the live picture of gaza. It looks pretty quiet now that it has been a very difficult night for palestinians living within the gaza city, mainly because of the idea sending its air missiles pretty continuously through the day and through the night onto gaza city as well. In the last few minutes we have had a few lines from the Israeli Defence force, saying that sirens are now sounding injerusalem and across israel as more rockets have been fired from gaza. We have also heard from an idea spokesperson that the military has now regained control of all communities near the gaza barrier. But isolated clashes are still ongoing with active palestinian gunmen. As always, you can get the latest on the bbc s website but im back in a few minutes time with more on this developing story. Stay with us on bbc news. Hello. Over the weekend we had a contrast with the weather north to south, in scotland we had torrential rain which led to some disruption and flooding. Whereas as we pushed across england, wales and Northern Ireland this area of High Pressure was very much in charge so it was settled and warm for the time of year. As it will be today. We have a weak Weather Front draped across northern england, Northern Ireland and also parts of southern scotland. It has been producing some patchy light rain that will continue to fade and we have a lot of low cloud, mist and murk close to the irish sea coastlines. You can see here a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of sunshine, warm across the far south east, and it will feel fresher as we push further north but feeling much better in scotland today than it did over the weekend. Through this evening and overnight, the low cloud, mist and murk in the irish sea will push a bit further inland and drift across the English Channel coast as well. We will also have some more rain coming in across western scotland, the met office has a yellow Weather Warning out for this because the Rain Is Falling on already saturated ground and it will be with us tomorrow courtesy of this Weather Front which is very slowly pushing southwards. Tomorrow as you can tell from the isobars it will be breezy wherever you are, windy in the north. And the low cloud, mist and murk is pushed inland overnight and it will start to retreat back towards coasts. But what you will find some of it will linger. Temperatures tomorrow widely19 2a degrees. 0n the other side of the Weather Front in the north it will start to turn that bit fresher. A Weather Front makes it down into england and wales during the course of wednesday. Behind it, brighterskies, still noticeably breezy. With a few showers peppering the north and west. You can see the fresher conditions, 9 18 degrees behind the Weather Front. But ahead of it still in the much warmer air, still for london 23 degrees. As we look beyond that, a Weather Front which has come south looks very much like on thursday it will push northwards again and we have another one slipping south. We could well see these two merge during the course of friday, and still a bit of uncertainty about it. But what it does mean is that in the outlook period it does turn more unsettled with more of us seeing some rain. But behind the Weather Front in Southern England as it moves north it will get warmer.
