Israelis have been killed. The Gaza Ministry of health says 400 and 13 palestinians have been killed by israeli air strikes in gaza, including 78 children. The israeli army also says more than 400 Palestinian Militants have been killed after infiltrating Southern Israel, with dozens more captured. Israel says it is still trying to regain full control of eight areas where hamas militants infiltrated following saturdays attack. The number of israeli civilians and soldiers taken hostage has been put at 100 by the Israeli Embassy to the us, though some have been freed. In northern israel, hezbollah rockets targeted three military positions, with israel responding with barrages of artillery into Southern Lebanon. The Un Security Council is meeting in new york to discuss the situation. 0ur middle east correspondent Yolande Knell has the latest on the conflict. And i should warn you, her report has some distressing images. A devastating bombardment. Israel promised overnight that hamas would pay the price for its unprecedented Surprise Attack. And in gaza, this was the result. Translation what happened to us is complete destruction, and there are 150 people at this building. We cant live there now. But today in israel, more gunfights, as Israeli Security forces pursued some of the armed palestinians who infiltrated a day ago. Here, they chased militants in a stolen car and killed them. And here, the shocking result of the earlier mass assault. The bodies of an israeli family shot dead, waiting to be taken for identification and burial. Over here, youve got another one of the body bags that, disturbingly enough, you can find along the roadsides of Southern Israel right now. Here, were not very far from an Israeli Military base that was overrun by hamas militants and has since been recaptured. Its now known that among the dead, there was a 20 year old british man, nathanel young. Hed signed up to serve as a soldier in israel. Nathanel always had strong jewish pride, his brother said in a statement. From a young age, hed always wanted to play an Important Role in defending his country. Its something hed talked about a lot. But for many, the fate of their loved ones is still unknown. Outside the main hospital in ashkelon, Rachel Ezra Berated a visiting mp. I want you to help me find my boy, oz, and his girlfriend naomi, aged 24 and 23, she tells him, distraught. This hospital has been overwhelmed, treating some 400 people, soldiers and civilians some shot, some injured with the continuing rocket fire. It was very difficult. It was tough. A lot of casualties have been brought one after one, one after one, very quickly. There was a reminder today of the potential for this conflict to widen. The Israeli Military carried out artillery strikes in Southern Lebanon after mortars were fired towards israeli positions. But gaza is still the main focus. Its believed dozens of israeli hostages, including women and children, are now being held there. We will not forget. Hamas terrorists target israeli civilians, israel will target hamas and islamichhad terrorists, wherever they will be in gaza. And for israelis and palestinians, there are signs of a long war ahead. Yolande knell, bbc news, ashkelon. I want to bring you some developing news and a warning straightaway it is distressing. We are getting reports from a Search And Rescue service that at least 250 bodies have been removed from the site of a Music Festival that came under attack by hamas militants on saturday morning. This Music Festival was taking place in Southern Israel, not farfrom gaza. And on saturday morning, it came under attack. This is a road not far away from that festival. You can see the burnt out cars and there are Eyewitness Reports of gunfire. This is a map giving the rough layout of the area, so the area of re im, not farfrom gaza, not farfrom their the area, so the area of re im, not far from gaza, not far from their is where this Music Festival was taking place, lots of young people there, an open air festival. Place, lots of young people there, an open airfestival. And place, lots of young people there, an open air festival. And we have had pictures of people fleeing and running from the sound of gunfire. We have had reports of people being taken hostage, too. But what we havent had up until this point is any kind of numbers of the people impacted. The first reports we are getting, and i should say we have not independently verified these numbers, this is reporting from zaka, a Search And Rescue organisation, claiming that at least 250 bodies have been removed from the sight of that Music Festival that came under attack. 250 bodies, at least, have been removed from that Music Festival venue, that open air Music Festival that was taking place in Southern Israel not far from gaza and was seemingly attacked by militants crossing from gaza into israel on saturday morning. And as i said, that number of at least 250 bodies found has not been independently verified by the bbc, but it is being reported relatively widely now from zaka, a Search And Rescue organisation. We are working ourselves to verify the details of exactly what did happen there. 0ur correspondent anna foster has the latest developments behind me, these Flashing Lights are where the road was closed off. This has been almost a staging post in the last few hours. We watched ambulances coming in and helicopters landing on the road. It looked like they were evacuating casualties out of these areas. It is very dark now. But the skies have been regularly lighting up in the last few hours, as there has been a regular barrage of missiles being fired out from gaza and when they come, you see these Points Of Light Shooting into the sky. You see the missile intercepted by israels iron dome system, which really catches most of these missiles coming in. But the sound when that happens, really sort of loud booms that you feel shaking all the way through your body and sometimes, people around here jump when that happens, even though people around here are used to it now. Also worth mentioning is the amount of Israeli Military and equipment and hardware moving into the area at the moment. A lot of tanks are coming into Southern Israel. We know that one of the priorities for the idf was securing these Southern Israeli communities after they were infiltrated by hamas militants who broke through the fence yesterday morning. The question is what they will do after they secure the area. You can see all the time whats going on. You can see probably flashes in the background. I can hear a plane going overhead. Sometimes, you get the sound of a drone as well, they are distinctively different. You can hear the plane shooting over, the drone is a sort of consistent whining sound. Again, you can hear the booms that are going on. Its been constant actually, lewis, for the last few hours. And it shows you that this conflict, as it is, but certainly the escalation that weve seen in the last 48 hours or so is really an early indication, i would say, of what is likely to happen in the next few days and potentially the next few weeks. And, anna, just talk us through roughly, if you can, just give us a sense of the geography of how far you are from gaza and other key points around you. Well, gaza is less than ten kilometres over here. So sometimes, when youre seeing those flashes that you will occasionally get on the horizon there, gaza is really close, and that is something that these Southern Israeli communities have been dealing with, living with for quite a long time. Because these missile attacks, which weare seeing an awful lot of yesterday and today, are a regular feature of life here. Certainly, when you go down the coast, were in ashkelon, but when you go down to sderot and you look out onto the gaza strip. These two areas really do rub shoulder to shoulder, and perhaps this is one of the reasons why hamas were able to carry out what was a Surprise Attack yesterday morning. The tension and the increasing tension is no surprise. But the way they were able to break through the fence, to infiltrate using paragliders and by sea, with very little warning certainly from the Israeli Security services that this was likely to happen. From the us as well, of course, which is one of israels big allies, nobody seemed to know that this large scale attack was about to happen. And questions, along with the shock that is happening here at the moment, a stunned community. There are also questions being asked about why intelligence did not pick up such a large, imminent attack. Looking ahead, are you getting any sense of what might happen through the night . Well, its difficult to know. We have been talking about this potential Israeli Ground incursion into gaza because that is something that is crucial, really. When we saw the israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu talking in the hours after these attacks yesterday, he promised a substantial response from israel and that would certainly take the form of a ground operation. But of course, you have a lot of civilians, Palestinian Civilians in gaza, as well as hamas militants. And of course, that is a place, its very tightly packed. Its not a place where people can go out and escape. If youre palestinian, you live in gaza, israel controls the edge of the strip. So its difficult for people to move away from an operation that might be launched. Also, dont forget those hostages, the videos we saw on social media yesterday of hostages, of israeli hostages taken by hamas militants and taken potentially back into gaza. That will be something that is at play when the Israeli Defence forces are trying to decide how to respond to this next. If there are israeli civilians being held hostage in gaza and the belief is that is the case, perhaps as many as a hundred of them, but its enormously difficult to tell at this stage all of these things will have to be considered very carefully as israel plans its next move. Thanks to anna for that. The Un Security Council is meeting in new york now, behind closed doors. We will bring you the reaction to that meeting when we get any. But before that, we heard from the permanent representative of israel talking to the United Nations. The past days have been devastating for each and every israeli. Israels suffered an unprecedented attack and the number of casualties is catastrophic. Truly unfathomable. Over the past two days, following hamas s Surprise Attack on israel, my country has suffered hundreds of fatalities. Yesterday, in the Early Morning of the Jewish Sabbath and on a jewish holiday savage Hamas Terrorists fired thousands of rockets into israel. But this was only the beginning. As rockets rained down indiscriminately upon israeli towns and cities, hundreds of Hamas Terrorists infiltrated israel and began a barbaric pogrom. A barbaric pogrom of unparalleled magnitude. Ruthless terrorists gunned down innocent israeli civilians in the streets, murdering anything that moved. As the Security Council prepares to meet today, israel has one sole demand hamas s war crimes must be unequivocally condemned. This unimaginable atrocity must be condemned. Israel must be given steadfast support to defend ourselves, to defend the free world. Israel will not accept any false, false, immoral comparisons between a savage terror group that targets innocents and the Democratic State of israel, this is not the comparison that the un or the Security Council can do. There is no reconciling with genocidal terrorists. Israel will exact a heavy price on hamas, so that what we witnessed will never repeat itself. Also, the permanent observer of palestine to the United Nations gave his speech earlier. We know only too well that the messages about israels right to defend itself will be interpreted by israel as licence to kill. To pursue on the very path that led us here. 370, and the number is rising by the moment, of palestinians that have been killed already in one day, including children, some barely a few months old. Entire families were killed in their sleep. Will this bring security . Will this advance peace . Where is the International Protection the Palestinian People is entitled to when the occupying power violates International Law and harms those it is obliged to protect . Arent palestinians lives worth saving . The Palestinian Civilians killed, the palestinian children killed in occupied palestine could have been spared. Isnt that a moral and legal obligation and a contribution to peace . Why nothing is done when those killed are palestinians . We need to think hard of what logic we want to see prevail here. If this is about vengeance, then many palestinians will feel they have much to avenge. If this is about peace, then the way to it is not through further entrenching oppression and occupation, but by ending it. You cannot say nothing justifies Killing Israelis and then provide justification for killing palestinians. We are not sub humans. Those comments coming before the Un Security Council meeting. When it wraps up and we get some comments afterwards, we will be back in new york for that. Lets go live now to jerusalem. Can i start by asking what we know or dont know about these events with the Music Festival . Just getting reports in. Yes, in the last hour, that zaka organisation, which is a group of volunteers that recovers Human Remains from this kind of attack or natural disasters, they have been scouring the area near the gaza strip all day and they have reported in the last hour that they have recovered more than 250 bodies from the sight of that Music Festival. And bodies still remain there. So thatis and bodies still remain there. So that is a huge total of people who have been killed. But it wont come as a shock because we knowjust how bad that attack was and we have been hearing, your viewers have been hearing, your viewers have been Hearing Testimony from people who testified that the shooting carried on for hours. There were gunman approaching the revellers and festivalgoers on both sides and they chased them through the countryside and into the forests and back to their cars and established roadblocks. And we have seen pictures today of the remains of those Cars Burnt Out and shut up, and there were bodies lying in the streets in the surrounding area. So this is confirmation of what many had feared, that this had been a complete massacre of festivalgoers carried out by these militants who had infiltrated israel from gaza. Incredibly distressing details. What do we know about where we are this evening, any sense of what happens now one extra through the night . Look, i think this kind of detail just reinforces the shock that israel is in. You heard from the Security Council just israel is in. You heard from the Security Counciljust how determined israel is at the moment to exact retribution, revenge and to destroy it hamas militarily, whether that is possible or not is a different matter. But they are Gathering Forces as we speak of thousands upon thousands of troops are being sent down close to the gaza strip. We dont know when they will be in operation, but we have been left in no doubt by Military Leaders here and politicians that they intend to do something out of the ordinary in order to respond to this extraordinary attack on israel. And we have seen a ferocious bombardment continued throughout the day to day. More than 350 dead in gaza, the total in israel between 600 and 700, and that total may rise. But the big question now is what happens to the hostages . Israel has admitted and acknowledged there may be 100 hostages who have been taken from israel into the gaza strip, some of them are soldiers, but we know some of them are families. We have seen pictures of elderly people being taken across, of entire families including children and then being paraded on social media throughout the day. This is a National Trauma in israel and it will mean that politicians and Military Leaders will have to find some kind of resolution to that issue. But it is not going to be easy. Resolution to that issue. But it is not going to be easy. When you talk about revenge not going to be easy. When you talk about revenge and not going to be easy. When you talk about revenge and searching not going to be easy. When you talk about revenge and searching for about revenge and searching for hostages, just reminders of the geography of gaza and all that that implies. Geography of gaza and all that that imlies. ,. , ~ geography of gaza and all that that imlies. ,. , ~ ,. , geography of gaza and all that that im lies,. ,. , 4 ,. , geography of gaza and all that that imlies. ,. , ,. , implies. Look, it is a tiny strip of land, with implies. Look, it is a tiny strip of land, with 3 implies. Look, it is a tiny strip of land, with 3 million implies. Look, it is a tiny strip of land, with 3 Million People implies. Look, it is a tiny strip of land, with 3 Million People living in it. And a militant group that has evidently been preparing for this for some time. This was a combined and coordinated and carefully communicated attack that crossed into israel at 22 different locations. They managed to overrun Military Installations that were supposed to be impregnable. This board was set up precisely to prevent this happening. This was not a surprise militant groups in gaza wanted to come into israel and inflict this kind of pain this border. 0rto inflict this kind of pain this border. Or to bring the war to israeli towns and villages in israel, that is the stated aim of the military militant groups and the military militant groups and the military militant groups and the military in israel was supposed to prevent that from happening and they didnt. So they are trying to reverse this now and what happens to these hostages . Israel has had to do with Hostage Crises in the past, but it has only been in small numbers. And eventually, if israel does negotiate and release prisoners in exchange, but the numbers we are dealing with now and what hamas and clare r dealing with now and what hamas and clare ,~. , clare asking for will be the release of clare asking for will be the release of their clare asking for will be the release of their prisoners i clare asking for will be the i release of their prisoners from israel. That seems to be a position that is not compatible with events that have happened over the last 48 hours hamas and islamichhad. We await a massive Military Response from israel. . , ~. , israel. But we dont know exactly what form israel. But we dont know exactly what form it israel. But we dont know exactly what form it is israel. But we dont know exactly what form it is going israel. But we dont know exactly what form it is going to israel. But we dont know exactly what form it is going to take. What form it is going to take. Thanks so much for that. We will head to the us, now. The us secretary of state, anthony blinken, has been talking to the american Sunday Morning shows about the attack on israel. Heres what he said to nbc s meet the press. This is the worst attack on israel since the Yom Kippur War in 1973, almost exactly 50 years ago, but theres also a big difference. That was a state on state conflict, army against army, with clear front lines. This is a massive Terrorist Attack targeting israeli civilians. Gunning people down in the streets of their towns. Gunning them down in their homes. Dragging israelis, men, women and children, across the border with gaza. A Holocaust Survivor in a wheelchair, women and children, all being taken hostage. So you can imagine the impact this is having in israel, and it should be revolting to people around the world. But, mr secretary, do you acknowledge that both Israeli Intelligence officials and Us Intelligence officials were caught off guard here . This is an attack that i dont think anyone saw coming in the immediate. So was it an Intelligence Failure, mr secretary . Do you acknowledge it was an Intelligence Failure . We will have plenty of time. The israelis will have plenty of time to look into that. All of us will have time to look into that. The focus now has to be on making sure that israel has what it needs to deal with this attack and, at the same time, israel has come to us and asked for some specific additional assistance im sure youll hear more about that probably later today and were responding to that, and we have the ability to do that. Iran and hamas have a long relationship. Hamas wouldnt be hamas without the support its had for many years from iran. In this moment, we dont have anything that shows us that iran was directly involved in this attack, in planning it and carrying it out, but thats something were looking at very carefully and weve got to see where the facts lead, but we do know that iran has had a long relationship with hamas. Long support. Its one of the reasons that we have been aggressively working to counter iran, including sanctioning more than 400 iranians and companies, precisely for things like the support its provided to hamas. Its no surprise that those who are opposed to the talks, those who are opposed to Israel Normalising its relations with its neighbours and with countries beyond the region, are hamas, hezbollah and iran. So its entirely possible that one of the motivations for this attack was to try to derail these efforts to advance normalisation. Something that is very hard, there are a lot of really challenging issues to work through, were in the process of trying to do that, but the result would be, if we were able to get there, a much different path for the region and for the future. A path of greater stability, of greater integration, of people working together to better their lives. Lets go live to washington, so committed support for israel. Yes. Committed support for israel. Yes, and the details committed support for israel. Yes, and the details of committed support for israel. Yes, and the details of that committed support for israel. Yes and the details of that support emerged a view i was to go via the pentagon. Essentially, what they are saying is that they are rapidly providing the Israeli Defences with additional equipment and resources a few hours ago via the pentagon. And munition is being airlifted to israel. We expect that some of that support will start arriving today and over the next couple of days. The us has also said that it is deploying its Aircraft Carriers from the Western Mediterranean to the eastern mediterranean, a journey of about 1,000 miles, as well as aircraft that will be deployed to basesin aircraft that will be deployed to bases in the middle east, and that will be a deterrent, they say, to iran. And what they are saying essentially is that its own deployments will be a deterrence position, that is what they are calling it, but clearly an escalation even as they make good on that promise to support israel. Thank you very much for that. Back with you later on. I want to take you to gaza now and the live pictures we have capturing the skyline. We have been monitoring these over the last couple of hours. Of course, there have been of course, there have been occasional flashes of orange. At the moment, things look relatively calm. We are keeping across the pictures as i said. The numbers coming in are sadly increasing. 700 dead from the israeli side, 100 kidnapped on the gaza side, 413 dead. 78 children included in that number. More than 2,000 injured. Desperate figures and unfortunately, those death tolls seem to increase. Im Lewis Vaughan jones, this is bbc news. The Labour Party Conference has been taking place in liverpool. Earlier we heard from Emily Thornberry these are acts of terrorism. They are unjustified. And its right for the whole world to condemn it. Where is the humanity of these people . It is appalling. Its like our 7 7. This is terrorism. And there have been criticism of the labour party in the past with its handling of various issues around anti semitism and how it deals with it. Will this provide another test . We are quite clear about what view we take on this. And it is absolutely, there is no argument. This is terrorism. This is attacks on innocent people and it is unjustified in any terms. Would you be echoing, if the labour party were in power, echoing the comments of the Prime Minister . Im afraid i havent had a chance to hear what the Prime Minister has said, but i assume he has taken the same line as the rest of the world, which is there is nojustification for these attacks on innocent people and it is terrorism and it must be condemned. In the longer term, what is the answer here . I think that is for another day. I dont think that it is for today. Today is for us to condemn these acts of terrorism and this appalling violence. That is what we should be talking about today. There will be other times to talk about what a solution might be and what it might look like, but not today. Today, we need to be clear that we stand with israel and it is appalling what they have been subjected to. And in terms of any measures you would like to see, we have the Un Security Council meeting now, weve heard various statements from people going in. What weve heard committed, Extra Military Support from the us already committed. Extra military supplies, including munitions. What would you like the uk to do . I think we just need to be clear. That israel has an absolute right to defend itself and that it should be facilitated in being able to do that. It must be able to defend itself against terrorism and that is that. Its clearly labour conference, and this wasnt a topic you were planning on talking about, what has been the mood and the sense here, when people have followed the headlines and watching and seeing what is happening . Whoever i have spoken to about it, we are all appalled at what has happened. As i say, we see it too often. We saw terrorism with the manchester bombings in my constituency, we lost 13 people as a result of 7 7, we have to utterly condemn terrorism, and that is what this is. And moving on to the days ahead at conference, onto domestic affairs. What will be top of the agenda . We have been talking today about the importance of Rewiring Britain because we have a National Grid which simply isnt up to it. It was fine during the days when we relied on oil from the north sea and from gas that we were importing from around the world, but we need to move on and we need to move on to Green Electricity and green power, and our National Grid is not up to it. There are days when we lose £63 million because the National Grid simply cant step up and take the energy that is being produced. We are holding back, according to the bbc, £200 billion worth of potential investment either by people who want to supply to the grid or people who want to use the grid. And people wanting to use the grid are having to put in bids to have more power and theyre being told they wont be able to get a connection to the grid or an upgrade to the grid until the late 2030s. This simply isnt good enough, there is no long term thinking on this, and what were saying is that we will invest in the National Grid and we will make sure that it is fit for purpose. Youve heard a lot of coverage about how israel has to respond heavily and is going to, about how vulnerable the people in gaza are and also about the problem of the hostages. That is remarkable, we havent seen anything like hostage taking on this scale. It may not be stated exactly in those terms, but this has been an absolutely devastating blow for israel and the israeli government. The aim, whether or not it is achievable, and there have been many efforts to try and restore deterrence which have not been of this sort, the goal will be to say, this sort, the goal will be to say, this is a knockout blow, nothing like this can ever be allowed to happen again because hamas or other organisations like it will be at the consequences. It will be determined by Military Factors that i am simply not well informed enough on. In terms of the hamas point of view, they will have factored in this kind of response. What was the tactic . The tactic i think has been to get these hostages as Bargaining Chips but there are certain things that hamas has achieved which cannot be undone. Firstly, they have shown themselves as the prime mover here. They have launched a devastating attack that israel didnt expect, but nobody thought was possible. Hamas have been taking the credit for this. Hamas have been taking the credit forthis. Hamas hamas have been taking the credit for this. Hamas has made a very strong move. And now they have the hostages and so whether they want to go for using them in the immediate conflict or using them as a Negotiating Tools going forward, they have those tools and i simply dont see how israel could rescue 100 hostages in this gaza situation. Israel takes hostages very seriously. 0ne captured soldier was once exchanged for 1000 palestinian prisoners. The numbers are enormous. Interesting. So countries like egypt and qatar are certainly mobilising, talking to hamas, trying to use back channels that will go to israel and trying to see how this can turn back into a negotiating situation. At the same time, israel has not begun what it is going to do as the Military Operation yet. This isjust, we have only seen the beginnings of what is wrong is going to do and hamas certainly has plans for how things will proceed from here. These images apparently show the festivalgoers theyre running from the gunfire. This again is the road afterwards. Cars burnt out. Piled up on the side of the road, you can see there. One more video. Circulating on social media. We have authenticated this one, shows a woman in her 20s apparently been taken away. That man there with the blood face apparently the boyfriend, also being taken away by Palestinian Militants there, both are still missing. The israeli woman who saw been taken there and her boyfriend both are still missing. A friend of noa who was the woman, he spoke to my colleague earlier. There were missiles all around israel, that is what woke us up. Then we started messaging or the people still at the Music Festival which happens to be all morning. They were searching for some to hide, they didnt have any car. Also what she wrote, they didnt have a car, she and her boyfriend came with another group. When the terrorists came, at around half past eight to nine, terrorists broke through the gaza borders and they came in. Thats when we started hearing about what was going on at the festival. Thats when we started getting nervous about noa and her boyfriend, of course for other people as well, that they are still missing. Around half past eight was the last message i got from her. Saying she doesnt have a car. I tried to tell her to stay low, try to may be contact the police and the military so that they will know their location, maybe they will find them. About half an hour after, i found that video that was seen here before of her on a motorcycle, taken away from her boyfriend. You can see clearly its her going into gaza. You must be really, really worried. Yeah. Really bad. This is the largest event we can remember in our lifetime. We have been through a few operations but this scale and magnitude, i cannot recall. The exact number of people who were kidnapped are yet to be exact. We dont know but may be near 100. Most of them are civilians, young people, friends, children, women, elderly that were kidnapped from their home and the Music Festival. Its not just about what happened to noa, its about everyone that has been kidnapped right there to gaza at this time which hasnt been Something Like this in the whole of history. It has been from this angle from this particular Camera Position relatively quiet over the last couple of hours, but in the last few minutes there were some flashes of orange against The Dark Night Sky there. I just want to show you one example of what did happen a couple of hours ago. Our reporter was speaking to my colleague marion live on the bbc building in gaza when there was an explosion. I want to say straightaway that he confirmed afterwards that he did move and he is fine butjust afterwards that he did move and he is fine but just to give afterwards that he did move and he is fine butjust to give you a sense of what has been happening there. Take a look at this. When i drove this morning. Explosion that sounds like it was quite close to you, rushdi. Rushdi, can you hear me . Are you 0k . That sounds quite close, yeah. That sounded very close. Are you 0k . Do you need to go or are you 0k to stay . That was very close, yeah. Rushdi, can you hear me . Yes, ican. Ican. Are you 0k to stay where you are . Or would you like to move . I dont know what is. No, ithink no, i think we should move. Please to sa he no, i think we should move. Please to say he did no, i think we should move. Please to say he did confirm no, i think we should move. Please to say he did confirm after no, i think we should move. Please to say he did confirm after that to say he did confirm after that that he is safe, he did move after that. I want to focus now on the humanitarian situation there. A short while ago i spoke to jason lee, who is Country Director at save the children palestine. He told me about the humanitarian aid mission that they are delivering to people affected in the area. We have a situation now where we have in gaza, over 1800 people that are injured. You have 74,000 people that have fled their homes and are sheltering in schools. These people need immediate access to basic essentials such as food, water, medicines to ensure they can continue to survive in the next couple of days. You talk about people leaving their homes. Just talk us through that process because when there are strikes, israel does give warning but where exactly do people go . Civilians within gaza are fleeing to the schools. These are the designated shelters in emergency. It is a perilous journey because, as you can imagine, when there are air strikes falling, families are just moving whenever they can, taking the risk, putting all their loved ones, their belongings, whatever they can carry and moving to the shelters. There have not been any cessations or stops in the fighting, so the route for the transportation for these families is agreeably dangerous and of course we see this in the numbers of people being injured and the numbers of people being killed in gaza so far. Over 400 people have been killed by the air strikes. What exactly is the priority when it comes to aid . What kind of things that people who have left their homes need most urgently . Its really about provision of life saving assistance. Critical things that everyone needs. Bedding, food, water, having somewhere to stay, shelter, having access to medicines. There are inherent protection risks for children as well. If you can imagine over 74,000 people cramming into schools. The risks for children, the protection risks for them, the risk of being separated from parents, being subject to possible sexual and gender based violence, these are critical humanitarian needs that must be met in order to keep children safe. What are some of the impacts, you mentioned some of the risks, but some of the impacts more widely of conflict like this on children . The long Lasting Mental Health psychosocial needs of children, especially children that have gone through multiple escalations escalations and crises, cannot be underscored. All of our research has shown that increasing numbers of children exhibit high levels of anxiety, depression, orfeeling separated, being isolated and losing all hope in the future. There can be no future for any society where the children themselves do not see a future for themselves. I think this is quite critical, that we address the long term Mental Health and psychosocial impact of children that have gone through countless cycles of escalations and violence. We are not talking about the politics, we are talking about the humanitarian need here, but what is your message to governments and to authorities in the area . There must be restraint shown by all sides to ensure that there is protection of civilians. Children cannot be paying the highest price for the ongoing escalations. Its critical that funding continues to enable us to continue delivering life saving assistance, but also to ensure that there are humanitarian corridors, there are pauses in the fighting that will enable civilians, families to go out to get food, to get water, to get the medicines and medical care that they need, but also to enable humanitarians like us to deliver assistance and to ensure the safety of civilians. 0ur our thanks to jason lee speaking to me earlier.
