Will meet later on sunday. President biden has vowed rock solid support for israel and warned against other countries taking advantage of the situation. One british citizen, jake marlowe, is missing. He was working as security at an Outdoor Party near the gaza border when the attack happened. And in egypt, two israeli tourists and their egyptian tour guide were shot dead in alexandria, apparently by a policeman. Another british man, nathaniel young, has been killed in the fighting. His family posted a Facebook Post paying tribute to him. So as we know, dozens of israelis have been taken hostage. Let me bring you these pictures, which some viewers might find distressing. Showing a woman in her 20s being abducted by armed men on a motorbike and an israeli man seized by Palestinian Militants. Footage circulating on social media shows the moment an israeli woman begged for her life as she was separated from her partner and driven away by hamas fighters into gaza. They were attending an outdoor Music Festival on saturday when armed hamas fighters suddenly arrived and began taking hostages. The Palestinian Militants arrived and opened fire at some point in the morning on saturday. Back to the woman on the motorbike. She was 25 year old noa argamani. Her and her partner had been at an outdoor Music Festival near the gaza border. Lets speak to amit parpara. Hes a friend of noa argaman the israeli woman who was at the same Music Festival near gaza with her boyfriend. First of all, how did you hear from noa . I believe she contacted you . Yes, my First Contact with noa was around 630 when the missile started, there were missiles in israel, that woke us up, all of us. And then we started messaging the people in the Music Festival which happened to be all morning. We Music Festival which happened to be all morning all morning. We are seeing them down, all morning. We are seeing them down. They all morning. We are seeing them down. They are all morning. We are seeing them down, they are in all morning. We are seeing them down, they are in hebrew, all morning. We are seeing them down, they are in hebrew, can. All morning. We are seeing them l down, they are in hebrew, can you explain what shes saying to you . Yes, shes sending the live location and asking for someone to save her, save her boyfriend. She was hiding in a hole near the festival. They were searching for some place to hide because they didnt have any car, that is also what she wrote, they didnt have a car and they came in a they didnt have a car and they came ina group, they didnt have a car and they came in a group, i guess. So when the terrorists came, they head head. Around 8 30pm until 9pm, the terrorists broke through the gaza borders and they came in, that is when we started hearing about the horrors going on in the festival. And that is when we started to get nervous about noa and her boyfriend. Of course, for other people as well of course, for other people as well thatis of course, for other people as well that is still missing. And around 8 30pm was the last message that i got from her. Saying that she doesnt have any car. I tried to tell her to stay low, i try to contact the police and the military so that they know their location. Maybe they will find them. About half an hour after, ifound maybe they will find them. About half an hour after, i found that video that was seen here before of her on a motorcycle taken away from her on a motorcycle taken away from her boyfriend and being attacked. You can see clearly the terror going into gaza. , ,. , into gaza. You must be really, really worried. Into gaza. You must be really, really worried. Yes. Into gaza. You know, this is the largest| bad. You know, this is the largest event that we can remember in our lifetime. We have been true a few operations, but a Surprise Attack of this scale and magnitude on israel, i cannot recall. The exact number of people who were kidnapped is yet to be exact, that means we dont know. Maybe near 100. They are most of them civilians. Young people. Friends, children, women, elderly, they were kidnapped from their homes and the Music Festival. So it is not just about what happened to noa and avinatan, it is about everyone that is kidnapped right there to gaza at this time, which hasnt been Something Like this in the whole history. Something like this in the whole histo. ~. ,. , Something Like this in the whole histo. ~. ,. , history. What have the government or officials been history. What have the government or officials been telling you about the officials been telling you about the ongoing search or how they are going to try and get these hostages back . There was no official contact from the government with us. We contacted noas family and avinatan s family. There has been no official contact, but something is ongoing. And that is most of our purpose here, to make use of the network to understand that there might be a chance to get them out safely right now. Time is of the essence and this is our main priority right now, getting people back home safely as soon as possible before it is too late. All of the acting up that is now happening is from civilians. Private groups that are combined together to help the people get back together. And this is the most, there is no contact and it is or what we do. We write no have authorities in the government that we are in contact with to help all of the people that are kidnapped right now. But it has to happen now. And someone can still save the situation. They must act fast and with the back up from other nations. This reality cannot be tolerated in any other country. We can still bring them back home safely. That is our main purpose right now. Make this thing right. Aha, main purpose right now. Make this thin riuht. ,. , ~ thing right. A country, thank you. Amit. As you saw, the attack took everybody by surprise. Lets get more with daniel levy in london. He is the president of the Us Middle East project and was a former israeli negotiator. Just listening to amit and the way these musical festivalgoers were surprised and some of them clearly in those videos kidnapped, what is it now you think the israelis have to do to get amit s friends back . Well, of course, heartbreaking to hear amit of course, the israeli deterrence were caught by surprise, the Israeli Military were caught by surprise, the Israeli Intelligence considered to be one of the most highly respected in the world was caught by surprise. This of course has to be about making sure that all of those civilians who have been taken can return safely. But i fear that if we end the conversation there, we may have a similar conversation sometime in the not too distant conversation sometime in the not too dista nt future. Conversation sometime in the not too distant future. Because what we havent talked about is why is there a Popular Resistance movement, a militant movement in gaza amongst the palestinians resorting to these kinds of tactics . And the sad truth is that yes, war is terrible, war is terrible anywhere, but the solution is not going to be a military one. The solution is going to have to be a political one, which takes care not only of amit s friend, but also addresses the fact that israelis have woken up to a horrific reality yesterday and today. Palestinians live without all the basic freedoms, the basic things that you and me take for granted, they live under a permanent occupation for approaching six decades. It has been called an apartheid regime. There can be sadly no security, not for amit, not for his festival going friends, as long as palestinians are deprived of their most basic rights and freedoms and dignity. So if we zoom out, as difficult as it is to do on a day like today and after listening to amit, if we zoom out, we have to have something which not only addresses that question you just raise, but addresses the absence of any horizon of hope for millions of palestinians notjust this weekend, but every day of every year for decades. . , decades. But given the extent of this attack. Decades. But given the extent of this attack, daniel, decades. But given the extent of this attack, daniel, given decades. But given the extent of this attack, daniel, given the this attack, daniel, given the ferocity of attack and given the make up of the Israeli Government right now, how likely is it that things are to change . Right now, how likely is it that things are to change . Very unlikely indeed. Things are to change . Very unlikely indeed itut things are to change . Very unlikely indeed. But lets things are to change . Very unlikely indeed. But lets not things are to change . Very unlikely indeed. But lets not have things are to change . Very unlikely indeed. But lets not have a things are to change . Very unlikely indeed. But lets not have a time i indeed. But lets not have a time horizon of days or months in front of us. They appealed to the International Community has to be an appeal that includes sending a signal to palestinians that they have another way the appeal. You know you have a Palestinian Movement which 30 years ago, last month, it was 30 years ago, recognised israel and signed an agreement with israel and signed an agreement with israel and made a deal. To pursue negotiations. And since that time, the number of illegal Israeli Settlers has quadrupled. Since that time, all those things that you just said, all the indignities that israelis saw yesterday visited on palestinians every day. The reason i think that you can have an Israeli Government of such extremity is that israelis have been given the Message Anderson and this plays into how this happened, why this huge failure . Israelis have been given the message by theirfriends in america, britain and the west that its ok, you can do anything to the palestinians and we will have your back. And that leads to israel making the wrong decisions, it means israel has avoided the hard choices, it means israel has told itself that it means israel has told itself that it can deal with this. The palestinians are not a real problem, the world is ok with it. And that leads to the kind of hubris, the kind of ignoring of the reality which i think has led to a deep decomposition within the system. And today and yesterday, israel is waking up to a psychological confusion and shock the likes of which is unprecedented. And as people, take a deep breath, come to terms with this. Im afraid we are going to see horrific scenes coming from gaza at when it comes to what israel is going to do there, but at some stage, if we actually want hope and we dont want these conversations in the future, that is to include a wall to wall change in the policy that is taken towards the palestinians. Unless palestinians have security, israelis wont have security and war is appalling for everyone caught in it. Security and war is appalling for everyone caught in it. The latest developments are the biggest escalation in the long running conflict in decades. It is a complex story with a lot of history. To do that with me, we are joined by our security correspondent frank gardner, and our Arab Affairs Editor sebastian usher. Lets go back to the very basics, many people have been asking about where this is happening, what is gaza city, where is it and why is it this little enclave that contains so many people . As you say, it is a tiny enclave on the coast. I think the late estimate was 2. 3 Million People are squeezed into it. It was given, israel left it back in 2005, but rather than having time to establish its own political unity, very swiftly after that, there was a major fracture between the two main political factions, major fracture between the two main politicalfactions, hamas and major fracture between the two main political factions, hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Hamas won elections across the Palestinian Territories and the Palestinian Authority reacted against that, hamas as you know is prescribed by many countries, regarded as a Terrorist Entity, by the us, the european union, etc. And hamas was Strong Enough militarily to defeat them and take over control and has beenin them and take over control and has been in control of gaza since 2007. And the condition is already bad in gazait and the condition is already bad in gaza it got worse, israel created a full blockade around its border with gaza and egypt does something similar. So gaza became what many activists and many people from their describe as the Worlds Largest open air prison. So politically, economically, socially, in so many ways, it has failed, it has been unable to build itself into a proper kind of entity. And we have seen regularly conflicts between hamas and between israel, not on the scale we are seeing now, and that means that each time it happens, there is a major Infrastructure Damage to gaza, as well as the terrible impact on civilians there. So there has never really been a moment where gaza has been able to settle into any livable reality since israel left. ,. , left. Many people have been emailing left. Many people have been emailing the left. Many people have been emailing the bbc left. Many people have been emailing the bbc saying, i left. Many people have been i emailing the bbc saying, what e mailing the bbc saying, what exactly is hamas, who are they and what they want and why are they doing this because smug hamas is an acronym and it stands for the Islamic Resistance movement. Islamic resistance movement. Doinu Islamic Resistance movement. Doing this . Islamic resistance movement. Doing this . It started nearly 20 years doing this . It started nearly 20 years ago doing this . It started nearly 20 years ago as exactly that, and armed resistance years ago as exactly that, and armed resistance movements, an alternative to fatah. Resistance movements, an alternative to fatah, fatah is the name of the party to fatah, fatah is the name of the party of to fatah, fatah is the name of the party of Yasser Arafat which became the Palestinian Authority. It is unarmed the Palestinian Authority. It is unarmed alternative which does not recognise unarmed alternative which does not recognise the state of israel, it is on a recognise the state of israel, it is on a permanent state of war, active or inactive on a permanent state of war, active or inactive with israel, which is why or inactive with israel, which is why it or inactive with israel, which is why it is or inactive with israel, which is why it is a or inactive with israel, which is why it is a prescribed Terrorist Entity why it is a prescribed Terrorist Entity hy why it is a prescribed Terrorist Entity by many people, that makes it very difficult to deal with and whereas very difficult to deal with and whereas there are reasonably normal relations whereas there are reasonably normal relations between the eu and the us and britain, with the Palestinian Authority and britain, with the Palestinian Authority in the west bank in ramallah, there are not those normal relations ramallah, there are not those normal relations with hamas. And on several occasions relations with hamas. And on several occasions prior to this, hamas has sent occasions prior to this, hamas has sent rockets occasions prior to this, hamas has sent rockets into israel and every time sent rockets into israel and every time that sent rockets into israel and every time that happens, peace talks stop, violence time that happens, peace talks stop, violence pushes it back because most israeli violence pushes it back because most israeli leaders say, we will not negotiate with a gun held to our heads negotiate with a gun held to our heads. Lets talk about the fighting specifically because many people have been asking why has this most recent have been asking why has this most recent escalation happened and what is the recent escalation happened and what is the history behind that . Well, history partly is the history behind that . Well, history partly as is the history behind that . Well, history partly as we is the history behind that . Well, history partly as we have is the history behind that . Well, history partly as we have both i is the history behind that . Ii history partly as we have both been saying, the situation in gaza, really the possibility to live a reasonable life, which that pressure builds, and hamas has not faced an election since it took over. So although hamas is the ruling entity in gaza, it is not necessarily populate with all the people there. It is unable to come to, despite many efforts and many Mediation Efforts by other arab countries to come to a settlement with the Palestinian Authority so those two factions within palestine can unite again, and that has meant, as frank said, that essentially, governments, the us and the eu etc which were a major part of what we talked about for so long as the Peace Process essentially came to a standstill and didnt want to engage because the palestinians essentially included hamas and that is a terrorist group. So what hamas says, the main reason that it has given for what its doing now is notjust what it sees as the subjugation of its people, the blockade making their lives very difficult from israel, but also issues like the Al Aqsa Mosque known as temple mount injerusalem, that has been in 2021, the tensions that were building over that withjewish and israeli politicians who are going there, which is not allowed under the way the Al Aqsa Compound is managed. That became the reason why tensions would have been building in general and suddenly exploded then. Again, this is what hamas is saying about this particular eruption, but theres far more to it than that. That is the sense the palestinians, hamas, the Palestinian Authority to an extent and the generation of younger palestinians who feel disenfranchised from both have a sense they are no longer being listened to, their voices are no longer being heard in terms of what happens to theirfuture. Longer being heard in terms of what happens to their future. They have seen the Abraham Accords take place with several arab countries under President Trump first and now President Trump first and now President Biden is moving towards that, was moving towards that potentially with saudi arabia which would be a major shift within the region. And they felt they have been sidelined and essentially, for a long time, they were the central issue, if not always in reality, but suddenly rhetorically and certainly on the street amongst the people in the arab world, if not always with their governments. Their governments may have meld off than they were supporting the palestinians and will go to the very end for them and maybe they never really meant that. But i think the feeling still amongst the majority of people in the arab world still is that. So i think part of what would have motivated hamas is this sense they wanted to change the equation, they wanted to change the equation, they wanted to change the equation, they wanted to show they couldnt be left out, that rather than just having these regular confrontations with israel but dont really change the dial, they would do something which would and would mean that they couldnt be ignored and that had to be taken into account again. And israel could no longer feel safe. Frank, from What Sebastian says, this was a build up, wasnt it . But hearing from people talking to me through the day, a big surprise is the way in which it happened on saturday, the number of weapons. The sophisticated way in which hamas managed to do this. Managed to do this. Israelis are shocked and managed to do this. Israelis are shocked and surprised managed to do this. Israelis are shocked and surprised and managed to do this. Israelis are shocked and surprised and i managed to do this. Israelis are l shocked and surprised and i think quite shocked and surprised and i think quite angry with their government and the quite angry with their government and the military because they thought and the military because they thought they had got this. They thought thought they had got this. They thought they had got this. They thought they had got this. They thought they had this board are secure thought they had this board are secure.
