What was a marginal seat, with the victorious labour candidate notching up a majority of more than 9,000 votes, his party describing it as a seismic and historic win. They said that we couldnt change the labour party, and we did it. They said that we couldnt win in the south of england and the north of england, and we did it. They said, youll never beat the snp in scotland, and, rutherglen, you did it. From the partys leader to activists working the streets, labour poured resources into this constituency and their win was much, much bigger than many had expected. Michael shanks, Scottish Labour party, 17,841. Labour winning double the votes cast for the snp. The party of power at holyrood faced challenges going into the vote and had been managing expectations of a win, but even so, this was a bruising result for them. I do recognise that we have a big challenge on our hands and as a party, we need to come together collectively to right the wrongs that have happened in the last few months. Turnout was low, but those crunching the numbers say if this result was repeated uniformly across scotland, labour could win as many as 42 seats in a General Election. By elections will often exaggerate the swing against the government but, still, its the Direction Of Travel you cannot ignore in this by election. I suspect that if this kind of swing was replicated across scotland as a whole, labour would clearly be the dominant party north of the border again. Labour believe this win demonstrates they are back in business in scotland, and with a General Election looming, hope this will give momentum for their push to more scottish seats and the keys to number ten. Lorna gordon, bbc news. The snp leader and Scottish First minister, humza yousaf, gave his reaction to his partys defeat. Bad result. Of course it was. A disappointing night, a tough night for the snp, very difficult, of course. Theres no doubt a number of factors that played into that. We were told time and time on the doorstep that Margaret Ferrier s reckless actions were counting against us. Of course, the Police Investigation undoubtedly had an impact as well. But, look, the snp has to reflect, weve got to regroup, weve got to reorganise. Weve had tough adversities, tough Election Results in the past and weve bounced back stronger. Im very, very keen to make sure that we are fighting for the next electoral test. How much responsibility do you take as snp leader, as first minister, for this result . Of course, im leader of the snp, the buck does absolutely stop with me. But i think Everybody Knows that this particular by election had some very difficult contextual factors around it. Margaret ferrier s reckless actions of course came up time and time again. And the Police Investigation, of course, thats engulfed the party over the last few months again came up on a number of doorsteps. There are a number of difficult issues around this by election that made it a very difficult night for us indeed. The buck stops with you, but you just blamed Margaret Ferrier and your party. No, as i said, its myjob to make sure the party reflects, that We Reorganise and we regroup, make sure we have a really crisp and well understood message to take to the voters. Because i cant get away from the fact that our voters did not come out. A very low turnout, of course, right across the board, but our voters did not come out. So ive got to make sure im inspiring them, inspiring the public to come out. But theres no doubt, i think any objective Media Commentator would say there have been very, very difficult contextual factors in this by election for the snp. That was the snp leader and Scottish First minister humza yousaf giving his reaction. Live to our Political Correspondent nick eardley, in rutherglen. Nick, jubilation this morning among Scottish Labour leaders when i spoke to you earlier. Now that a bit of the dust has settled, what is the feeling around how much of this momentum they could take to a General Election . General election . Labour are optimistic General Election . Labour are optimistic. They General Election . Labour are optimistic. They are General Election . Labour are i optimistic. They are confident. General election . Labour are optimistic. They are confident. They are pretty certain that this is a moment for them in Scottish Politics. Rememberthat moment for them in Scottish Politics. Remember that labour was almost wiped out in scotland after the independence referendum. It felt like that was a proper game changer for labours position here. Well, they hope that this might be the same. They are looking at that swing and they are saying, if we can do it in rutherglen, we can do it elsewhere in the central belt. I was speaking to ian murray who until yesterday was labours only mp for labour in scotland. He said parts of glasgow, parts of edinburgh, parts of the central belt between edinburgh and glasgow, parts of east lothian are now all in play for the labour party. I was talking to the Deputy Leader of Scottish Labour Jackie Baillie who said she thinks labour have a good chance of winning a majority of seats in scotland. That is quite extraordinary when you stand back from it and think in the last General Election, they only won one seat and by winning the by election yesterday, they have now got two. But i do think when you listen to humza yousaf, the snp leader, a few seconds ago, its important to remember the caveat. The first caveat is Scottish Politics is pretty volatile. Rutherglen and Hamilton West has changed seats at every election since 2015. The rest of the country has been pretty volatile at points as well. So i wouldnt be certain of what is going to happen over the next year or so. The other Factor Thatis next year or so. The other factor that is really important to bear in mind as well is nobody is completely sure how popular labour are. The polls suggest they are doing really well, but there are some people in Scottish Politics who argued that it is not a particularly deep fondness of the labour party that is leading to those polling numbers. And there actually, all it takes us for a few things to change and that could go away. And actually. But no matter how you cut it, this is a big, big moment for labour. It opens a door for them to argue that they are back in scotland, they are back in a big way. The big question is, how big . Nick, we heard a scottish leader saying earlier the result shows voters are stick off the status quo, but what is it voters want that labour could bring in in terms of change . Voters are sick of. Really good question, i dont think there is any text or cancer. 0ne really good question, i dont think there is any text or cancer. One of there is any text or cancer. One of the really interesting things about scottish elections, it is really important to bear in line when you analyse stuff like this, people use, Base A Decision on a number of factors. How they feel about the uk government, the conservative government in london. Remember, the conservatives lost a deposit here yesterday, that is a pretty big deal to not even pull 5 . So there is the views on the uk government, the views on the uk government, the views on the scottish government, the snp government, the devolved government, that feeds into the mix, the constitution, how people feel about independence is really important as well. So it is a pretty complex mix of things that goes into that part when voters in scotland decide which box to take. And yes, youre right, there is that big Overarching Question of do labour have the answers to the questions people in scotland are asking . It is worth bearing in mind by election is worth bearing in mind by election is worth bearing in mind by election is worth bearing in mind by elections in by elections and General Elections are very Different Things and often, by Election Results are not replicated in General Elections. But what is really important here and really interesting is labours polling has been consistent, they have been doing a lot better over months and months and months in scotland. This is the first tangible result, a Big By Election that suggests that those poll numbers are borne out in reality. And that means if you chat to anyone in the labour party in scotland over the next few days, they are going to be absolutely delighted. find days, they are going to be absolutely delighted. Days, they are going to be absolutel deliahted. ~ ,. , absolutely delighted. And keep that anal sis. Absolutely delighted. And keep that analysis our absolutely delighted. And keep that analysis. Our political analysis. Our Political Correspondent nick eardley. Thank you for that analysis. Ive been speaking to professor Sirjohn Curtice, a political scientist at the university of strathclyde. I asked him whether labour would be able to recreate this kind of success in a General Election. By elections often give an exaggerated reflection of movements against governments and, to that extent at least, we cant necessarily assume that labour would do as well in scotland in a General Election as its done in rutherglen in this by election. One reason, for example, is that it was relatively easy for conservative voters who wanted to ensure that the snp lost this by election to switch to labour to ensure that the snp lost, but they might be much more reluctant to do that in a General Election. That said, it has been when oppositions start to produce swings of this size and this is not the first one for labour, they had over a 20 swing in a by election in yorkshire back injuly from the conservatives its when oppositions start to put in these really big swings that history suggests that they may well be on course to win the next General Election. So maybe labour wont get the a0 seats they had in 2010, maybe they will end up with the 20, but that 20 would, in itself, potentially make a significant contribution to labours chances of getting an overall majority at the next election. Not an easy task for the party because at the moment, at least, the geography of its support is not very efficiently distributed and it requires quite a big lead over the conservatives for them to get an overall majority. Well, the Scottish Labour members and politicians that weve been hearing from today seem to be taking those numbers to heart and are talking about possibly being able to win a majority in the General Election. But i want to ask you, john, about the turnout and how that affects it, because the turnout here was around 37 . So i wonder how much that really makes it plausible to call it a seismic victory . Because in 2019, in the General Election, the turnout in scotland was 68. 1 . So how much do you factor aspects like that into your analysis . Let me give you one rule of reactions to by Election Results in the united kingdom. The losing side will always say, look at the turnout, it was low. And the winning side, of course, will say, that doesnt matter. The honest truth is that the 37 turnout in rutherglen, well, its what . A couple of points lower than the average in all by elections in the uk in this parliament, slightly also below the average in all scottish by elections during the course of this century. So its not markedly below. And the truth is that previous by elections that have shown large swings to the opposition have indeed sometimes presaged General Election success. So i think the truth is, we shouldnt simply discount this because its a lower turnout, because the turnout is not markedly lower in many another by election that has indeed at least told us about the Direction Of Travel, even if perhaps its giving us a somewhat exaggerated picture as to how much progress the opposition is actually making. That was professor Sirjohn Curtice speaking to me earlier. Were standing by in wales for plaid cymru leader, Rhun Ap Iorwerth, to address the Party Faithful at its annual conference. We will bring you that live shortly. A man has appeared in court charged with soliciting to commit murder over an alleged plot to kidnap tv presenter Holly Willoughby. gavin plumb, from harlow in essex, is also accused of incitement to commit kidnap. The 36 year old, who is a Security Officer at a Shopping Precinct in the town, appeared for a short hearing at chelmsford magistrates court. Holly willoughby has not appeared on itv s this morning on thursday or today. She was said to be under Police Protection at her home on thursday night. A spokesperson for itv said this news has come as a huge shock to everyone at this morning and itv. We are providing all of the support we can to holly and her family at this incredibly distressing time. 0ur correspondent Charlotte Gallagher sent this update from chelmsford magistrates court. 36 year old gavin plumb appeared in the court behind me charged with soliciting to commit murder and incitement to commit kidnap. Live to aberystwyth now, where the lead of plaid cymru is about to address members at the annual party conference. That is the plaid cymru leader Rhun Ap Iorwerth addressing the Party Faithful at the annual conference. The first day of the conference. And he is addressing people first of all in his speech, he is addressing them in his speech, he is addressing them in welsh and he will go on to speak to them in english. It is his first conference as party leader. So lets discuss this now with our wales correspondent who is standing by. This is after what has been a turbulent time for plaid cymru. Absolutely, Rhun Ap Iorwerth took the leadership of plaid cymru in june, following the departure of the previous leader adam price, who quit after hanging on for a few days and weeks in the wake of a report that highlighted what was called a Toxic Culture within plaid cymru following allegations of bullying, harassment and sexism and a failure, collective failure by the leaders of that party to deal with it. No, we should stress mr ap iorwerth was one of the Deputy Leaders of that party. He says he wished he had done more, but having god in unopposed, it really is up to him now to set out his stall how he wants his party to change, how he wants it to be more inclusive and welcoming to others. The other big question for any plaid cymru leader, what is your point of difference within wales when you battle lader labour, the party that has been dominant here for so long . So we expect over the next half an hour to hear some of his ideas on those key issues. The party in much more ideas on those key issues. The party in much more of ideas on those key issues. The party in much more of a ideas on those key issues. The party in much more of a different in much more of a different direction from his predecessor. Yes. Direction from his predecessor. Yes, one of Adam Direction from his predecessor. Yes, one of adam prices direction from his predecessor. Yes, one of adam prices Big Direction from his predecessor. I9 one of adam prices big pledges was a referendum on independence in wales within five years of plaid cymru coming to power. That didnt happen at the last election. But we are likely to hear a slightly different message from Rhun Ap Iorwerth. He is already talking in interviews today about the appetite of welsh people for independence and whether there is room to persuade and convince more people before that time is ready. He says he is convinced about the need for independence in wales, but he thinks more people need to be persuaded before the time comes for a vote to take place. Before the time comes for a vote to take place take place. Were ust going listen nl to mr take place. Were ust going listen m to mr ap take place. Werejust going listen nl to mr ap iorwerth. Take place. Werejust going listen nl to mr ap iorwerth. He take place. Werejust going listen nl to mr ap iorwerth. He has nlto mr ap iorwerth. He has represented nlto mr ap iorwerth. He has represented the nlto mr ap iorwerth. He has represented the senedd nlto mr ap iorwerth. He has represented the senedd and | nl to mr ap iorwerth. He has represented the senedd and wales at a conference in africa, it embodies who he a conference in africa, it embodies who he is a conference in africa, it embodies who he is as a conference in africa, it embodies who he is as a politician, passionate and principled. His driving passionate and principled. His driving the Cooperation Agreements has led driving the Cooperation Agreements has led to driving the Cooperation Agreements has led to the invitation of Plaid Policies has led to the invitation of Plaid Policies in has led to the invitation of Plaid Policies in key areas. Im not sure if you policies in key areas. Im not sure if you can policies in key areas. Im not sure if you can keep up with the conference from where you are, adam, but if conference from where you are, adam, but if you conference from where you are, adam, but if you are, conference from where you are, adam, but if you are, i hope you get a real but if you are, i hope you get a real sense but if you are, i hope you get a real sense of the appreciation for the work real sense of the appreciation for the work that you did for plaid and for wales the work that you did for plaid and for wales. A contribution which continues, for wales. A contribution which continues, of course. So we heard mr ap iorwerth paying tribute to his predecessor. And we were just talking about whether he would take the party in a different direction. And you were talking about how he said that the party would have to bring people with us in his words, when it comes to independence. Do you think that winning the hearts and minds of people and that is achievable . Weill. People and that is achievable . Well, the oll people and that is achievable . Well, the poll suggests people and that is achievable . Well, the poll suggests that people and that is achievable . 9ii the poll suggests that over the course of the last decade, there has been a gradual increase in support for independence in wales. But at most and Rhun Ap Iorwerth would probably admit this, it is about a third of people who support independence for wales. Third of people who support independence forwales. Labourare independence for wales. Labour are the independence forwales. Labourare the dominant party in government and they certainly are advocating for more devolved power, but not the break up of the union. So i think it is a recognition by plaid cymru that their work in persuading people has not been done and it would almost be pointless having a referendum in wales until you know that at least around 50 of people want that as the future. Around 5096 of people want that as the future. , ,. The future. And in this speech, we will be dipping the future. And in this speech, we will be dipping in the future. And in this speech, we will be dipping in and the future. And in this speech, we will be dipping in and out the future. And in this speech, we will be dipping in and out of the future. And in this speech, we will be dipping in and out of it the future. And in this speech, we will be dipping in and out of it and j will be dipping in and out of it and returning to it shortly. But one of the things he is expected to also go into is notjust the issue of independence, but the other policies that are a priority for him. So what of the thing so what are the things we expect him to say . He knows things we expect him to say . H9 knows there is likely to be a General Election within the last next 12 months, so they need a point of difference within wales. We are likely to hear something about Cancer Treatment within wales. We know from the latest Health Data Patients here face a very long wait for treatment. So will there be an offer and a pledge for Cancer Patients . And also am developing waless economy, it lags behind on many measures, so selling wales to the rest of the uk and rest of the world and may be bringing back the old wda, the Welsh Development agency as a welly of boosting waless reputation internationally as a way. All the things that Rhun Ap Iorwerth might argue put wales in good stead to be an independent nation. But he knows of course it is hard to get this message through when westminster elections conventionally are all about labour and conservative ideas battling it out. About labour and conservative ideas battling it out battling it out. Lets listen into him again battling it out. Lets listen into him again. The battling it out. Lets listen into him again. The hope battling it out. Lets listen into him again. The hope is battling it out. Lets listen into him again. The hope is kept i battling it out. Lets listen into. Him again. The hope is kept alive, then in 1997, him again. The hope is kept alive, then in 1997, wales him again. The hope is kept alive, then in 1997, wales had him again. The hope is kept alive, then in 1997, wales had it him again. The hope is kept alive, then in 1997, wales had it all him again. The hope is kept alive, then in 1997, wales had it all to l then in 1997, wales had it all to win and then in 1997, wales had it all to win and we then in 1997, wales had it all to win and we did win the referendum. But therr win and we did win the referendum. But then we win and we did win the referendum. But then we had to win wales. In 1999. But then we had to win wales. In 1999. The but then we had to win wales. In 1999, the hope boiled overjoyfully. It 1999, the hope boiled overjoyfully. It was 1999, the hope boiled overjoyfully. Things we could missed opportunities, too. Things we could have missed opportunities, too. Things we could have done. So as we look forward could have done. So as we look forward to could have done. So as we look forward to the next quarter of a century forward to the next quarter of a century and beyond, we must learn from century and beyond, we must learn from the century and beyond, we must learn from the last. There was a glimpse of what from the last. There was a glimpse of what could be done. But for us as a party of what could be done. But for us as a party whose Central Mission is about a party whose Central Mission is about backing waless potential, we believe about backing waless potential, we believe in about backing waless potential, we believe in our ability to prosper as an independent nation after all. The years an independent nation after all. The years of an independent nation after all. The years of labour managerialism, of self imposed limits on what wales can beat self imposed limits on what wales can beat have been frustrating. Labour can beat have been frustrating. Labour are can beat have been frustrating. Labour are a party still too wedded to westminster, even In The Dark Days to westminster, even In The Dark Days of to westminster, even In The Dark Days of this conservative governments cronyism and cruelty, and a governments cronyism and cruelty, and a Party Governments cronyism and cruelty, and a party to resistant to new ways of thinking and a party to resistant to new ways of thinking.
