Of digital markets, on trial for fraud and money laundering. At the heart of the case, whether mr bankman fried unlawfully used Customer Deposits from his crypto exchange, ftx, to cover debts, expenses and investments of his crypto hedge fund, alameda research, and to enrich himself and his inner circle. He has pleaded not guilty. The governments first witness was a former ftx customer who deposited £110,000 on the exchange. The government is expected to call on people who lost money when ftx went bankrupt, as well as at least three former executives at ftx and alameda, who were also personally close with mr bankman fried. The british car market grew in september, according to new figures. The society of Motor Manufacturers and traders says its up 21 on the same period last year. But sales of Electric Vehicles fell sharply, pulling the share of ev sales down to 16. 6 of the overall market. Lets cross live now to mark tisshaw, whos the editor of autocar. Mark, explained this, because we were told the future is electric, but these figures suggest consumers dont really like what are seeing. Absolutely. Electric vehicles, they are pasty Early Adopter phase and into the mainstream, but as a mainstream car buyer there is no real incentive to buy one at the moment. As for the majority, there something more expected expensive than petrol cars. find something more expected expensive than petrol cam than petrol cars. And there is nothina than petrol cars. And there is nothing we than petrol cars. And there is nothing we keep than petrol cars. And there is nothing we keep hearing than petrol cars. And there is i nothing we keep hearing about, than petrol cars. And there is nothing we keep hearing about, range anxiety, not enough charges, not in anxiety, not enough charges, not in a to charge and they will not get you where you need to go if youre on a long journey. For all of those reasons people are sticking with what they know, the combustion engine. Where does that leave any of these targets, both for the industry itself and government, that up until recently wanted to ban them altogether . Altogether . Absolutely. The industry. Altogether . Absolutely. The industry. All altogether . Absolutely. The industry, all eyes altogether . Absolutely. The industry, all eyes are altogether . Absolutely. The industry, all eyes are on altogether . Absolutely. The i industry, all eyes are on 2024, altogether . Absolutely. The industry, all eyes are on 2024, as from them they have to sell 22 of their total sales, they have to be electric or they will face fines of £50,000 electric or they will face fines of £50,000 my electric or they will face fines of £50,000 my £15,000 electric or they will face fines of £50,000 my £15,000 per car but the market is in running at 16. 6 in september and thats quite a gap to close up, so Car Manufacturers will most likely have to heavily incentivise electric cars to give themselves, as the government doesnt seem to be offering or there is no indication the government will be Offering Incentives for buyers to buy the cars. find be Offering Incentives for buyers to buy the care buy the cars. And thats an important buy the cars. And thats an important distinction, buy the cars. And thats an i important distinction, private versus company cars. If you are a fleet there a better Tax Incentives and better ways of getting on board with Electric Vehicles that at the moment doesnt apply if you are just one of us, normal person. Moment doesnt apply if you are ust one of us, normal person. fi one of us, normal person. Thats riuht. One of us, normal person. Thats right the one of us, normal person. Thats right. The company one of us, normal person. Thats right. The company car one of us, normal person. Thats right. The Company Car Taxation l one of us, normal person. Thats| right. The Company Car Taxation is very favourable towards electric cars to the extent it is a total no brainer. However, there is no incentive any more for private car buyers at all. So they are simply more expensive. This is going to create a problem for the government. Consumer confidence will have been dented in electric cars by the moving of the date from 2030 to 2035. People make in the next Purchase Decision will be thinking, i dont have to go electric yet but that creates a huge problem for industry which will be faced by these fines of £15,000 per car, should they not hit the 22 mandate. Interesting to see whether we will get to that target. Mark, good to talk to you, thanks very much. Here in the uk, where the Media Regulator 0fcom has called for an investigation into cloud computing. We are talking about the vast it centres where we all store our data. 0fcom is worried the market has become dominated by two Companies Amazon and microsoft allowing them to charge too much. According to 0fcom, amazon and microsoft have as much as 70 of the cloud market in the uk much more than their 55 global share. Their nearest rival google has between 5 and 10 . Nicky stewart is the former head of ict delivery at the Uk Cabinet Office and also the former Commercial Director at ukcloud. Good to have you with us. Explain to me first of all about the significance of what 0fcom is looking into here, because cloud computing, we will have heard of it but we wont really know quite how much it shapes our lives day today and how much we rely on it. Yes. And how much we rely on it. Yes, thank you and how much we rely on it. Yes, thank you its and how much we rely on it. Yes, thank you. Its hugely and how much we rely on it. 1913 thank you. Its hugely significant. Arguably long overdue. 0ver thank you. Its hugely significant. Arguably long overdue. Over the last decade, all of us, all of our lives have become more intrinsically depended on the cloud, as it has moved into Market Vertical Market Vertical. Notjust her entertain, facebook and so on, it is now our health, our Critical National infrastructure, it is now our key public services, given the amount of the Public Sector relies on cloud and increasingly it is our defence and increasingly it is our defence and security. So its really important that 0fcom and the cma took a long hard look at this market, which as youve already said, microsoft and amazon absolutely have the lions share. And as consumers, it is right that we should be inspecting a market where we have choice, and cloud buyers and cloud consumers have the ability to switch providers, and what 0fcom has done is identify some key Working Practices which make that extremely difficult. In fact, arguably you can say that the cloud can be likened to the hotel california, because once youre in, its very difficult to leave. find its very difficult to leave. And that is the its very difficult to leave. And that is the challenge its very difficult to leave. And that is the challenge for other firms that might want to break into that space, dominated by these big two, very few other rivals can get a slice of that action. Why is it proving to be so hard . Isjust come down to the Economies Of Scale . Well, i think, down to the Economies Of Scale . Well, ithink, obviously, amazon and microsoft in particular have first mover advantage. They were, if you like, sucking up all the customers from very early doors and monster customers are in, they cant out. 0fcom has already identified Key Practices including anti competitive licensing on the part of microsoft, which artificially inflates the cost of rival Cloud Services by inflating the cost of microsofts ubiquitous licensing on rival platforms. All of these make it extremely difficult for new companies and new Market Entrants to break in and even those, what i would describe it as established a smaller Cloud Companies are struggling in the face of this. Lets face it, this is a market which is going to grow and grow. It is powering ai. It is the future and it is also the uks feature so its really important that we have diversity, choice and competitive tension in this market, or we try and get that and hopefully thats what the cma will achieve. Thats what we will have to keep an eye on. Thank you for that insight, good to have you with us. Watch this space, certainly. In other news. Traditionally theyd go by sea slower and more labour intensive. But now one firm in denmark is trialling the use of drones to deliver spare parts. Adrienne murray has been out on the water between denmark and sweden to find out how they work. This Battery Powered drone is heading to a wind farm loaded with a spare part. Taking off taking off vertically, much like a helicopter, it can carry two to three kilos up to 100 kilometres. Once in the air, the drone finds its way autonomously, and were tracking its journey by boat. We have an algorithm that basically does intelligent path planning. It can see where the wind is coming from, where it should approach the turbine from, and then automatically calculates a path along specific points. Theres more than 100 turbines, each precisely mapped, and the drone is programmed to pinpoint the right one. Were still about 20 kilometres offshore, closely following the drones flight path. And right behind me is the turbine where its about to make its delivery. After detecting the target, the drone closes in for the drop. Bulls eye. Its the first time this type of Drone Delivery has been done before. And the idea is to speed up repairs, saving downtime, fuel and costs. We want to have parcels delivered with drones on a daily basis, so we dont need to bring a vessel out. It could save that one day of production or even several days of production are not lost due to the turbine standing still. Drones have already been used for emergency medical aid and could take on tasks in hard to reach or risky locations. But there are still barriers to overcome. We have so far focused offshore, because theres a lot of use cases and its easier to get flight permits. But offshore oil rigs, ships, even ships moving, its a natural next step for us. Drone deliveries have been much hyped in the past, but its taken a while to get to where we are today. So why is that . The technology is moving very quickly and the legislators are struggling to keep up and that needs a little more push to get going. If that happens, regular Drone Deliveries over danish waters could soon be taking flight. Adrienne murray, bbc news, grena. Thats your business news.
