From new york Gary Odonoghue reports. Donald trump on his way to court yet again. The question this time around is he as rich as he says he is . Its a scam, its a sham. Just so you know, my Financial Statements are phenomenal. And while the former president cant be sent to jail, you as it is a civil trial, this one has really riled him up. And the Violent Crime that is being committed in our city and our state is disgraceful, and were going be here for months, with a judge that already made up his mind, its ridiculous hes a democratjudge, hes an operative, and its ridiculous. Attacking thejudge is a curious tactic, since he will decide on damages. Hes already ruled that mr trump and his children acted fraudulently. But the new York Attorney general is suing mr trump for 250 million for overstating the value of his properties to get cheap loans. No matter how powerful you are, no matter how much money you think you may have, no one is Above The Law. And it is my responsibility and my duty and my job to enforce it. Donald trump is accused of overstating the value of his Mar A Lago Club in florida by 25 times. He exaggerated the size of his Penthouse Apartment in trump tower by 200 . And overall, he may have claimed to be 2 billion richer than he really is. Lawyers for the former president have argued that Property Valuations vary a lot, even claiming the size of an apartment can be subjective something the judge called absurd. This is one of Donald Trumps prize possessions, a0 wall street, at the heart of new yorks financial district. If he loses this case, he could have it taken away from him, and with it a whole chunk of his self proclaimed reputation as a property genius. And more than that, some of his licences to do business here have already been suspended, threatening to end his new York Business career for ever. Gary odonoghue, bbc news, new york. Our north america correspondent, nada tawfik, is in new york with the latest. Well, Donald Trumps appearance in person here at the court certainly changed the tone of proceedings. He came here speaking to the press no less than three times, slamming the case as a sham and directly attacking the judge and the Attorney General as out to get him saying this was part of a plot to stop him from becoming the gop nominee. We also heard from the Attorney General reiterating that no one is Above The Law and saying that she would go on to prove the rest of her case. Now, inside the courtroom, donald trump listened all throughout the Opening Statements and the first Witness Nodding or shaking his head in agreement or disagreement based on what he heard from the Attorney General s team. We heard them reiterate that donald trump had overvalued his assets by millions of dollars. They said it was one thing to exaggerate for the likes of forbes and forbes magazine, but it was quite another to exaggerate when Doing Business in new york. But Donald Trumps lawyers clearly performing with him there in the courtroom, took on a very familiar tone from the former president , saying that this was a witch hunt and that he didnt commit fraud at all, period. Now, this case is expected to last for several weeks. We are not sure yet if donald trump and his sons will testify, but we are expecting to hear from numerous employees of the trump organisation. And whats at stake here is no less than the future of Donald TrumpsReal Estate Empire in new york and the potential that hell have to pay over 250 million in fines, which would be a significant hit to his net worth and his ability to ever do business in new york again. Next to news of a medical breakthrough that could save millions of lives around the world. The World Health Organization revealed a new Malaria Vaccine has been found to be 75 effective in phase three trials. Those trials took place in four african countries and involved 4,800 children. The results mean, it is the most effective jab developed against the disease so far. Lets just remind ourselves how deadly malaria is. The most recent figures from the who show there were 619 thousand global Malaria Deaths in 2021. Were 619,000 global Malaria Deaths in 2021. That year, there were 2117 million new cases of malaria. 95 of all Malaria Cases are in whos african region. Children underfive are the most Vulnerable Group affected by malaria in 2021, they accounted for nearly 80 of all Malaria Deaths in the african region. Heres our medical editor, fergus walsh. Malaria has been causing untold Human Suffering for millennia. The parasitic infection is spread by mosquitoes. Africa is worst affected, particularly the areas marked in red here, which account for 95 of the global burden of malaria. In 2021, there were an estimated 234 million cases and 593,000 deaths from malaria in africa. Most of those were children under the age of five. The oxford vaccine is called r 21 and requires children to have four doses. Trials run by 0xfords Jenner Institute show its around 75 effective at preventing malaria. Crucially, the worlds biggest vaccine manufacturer, the Serum Institute in india, has agreed to produce 100 million doses a year of the oxford jab between two and 4 a dose. This will be africas second Malaria Vaccine. The first Rtss From Pharma Giant Gsk gusts about twice as much since 2019. Just 1. 7 millionjabs have been administered. So the new 0xford vaccine could be delivered at a much bigger scale. Today is a great day for health. A great day for science. And a great day for vaccines. As a malaria researcher. I used to dream of the day when we would have a safe and effective vaccine against malaria. Now we have two. I spoke earlier to lorenz von seidlein, professor of Global Health at oxford university, who has been involved in developing the r21 vaccine at the Oxford Tropical Medicine Research unit. Here he is with more on why this vaccine is important and how different it is from the previous one. This new vaccine r 21 has a lot of similarities with rtss the last one, which was, as you remember, pre qualified two years ago by the who. And so with these similarities, we can be pretty sure that its also quite as safe as the rtss. So thats really reassuring because i mean, as you said, a million doses or so of rtss now have now been rolled out. So this is its great to know that you have a vaccine which is safe. The data that you mentioned suggests that this vaccine is more effective than rtss which is also great news for everybody. But i think the really, really critical difference is the part that you mentioned about sii. That is the Serum Institute of india because glaxosmithkline, gsk was only able to produce or will only be able to produce ten million doses in the coming years, which doesnt even start to touch the amount of vaccine that is needed. There are more than 28 countries have applied for four vaccines and want to include a malaria have applied for vaccines and want to include a Malaria Vaccine in their Childhood Vaccination programmes. So the demand is really in the hundreds of millions of doses. And as we saw during the covid outbreak, it is possible to roll out hundreds of millions of doses of new vaccines. And the Serum Institute of india, as far as i know, was able to produce within one year, 200 to 300 million doses a month of covid vaccines. So, i mean, we are working on a completely different scale. And while the gsk vaccine was basically rationed and was only available to Young Children in select african countries with this new vaccine, there is a real option that it will be broadly rolled out throughout africa. And then you also have to think about the countries outside of africa. Like, for example, in southeast asia, there is still malaria, there is falciparum malaria. And People Living in asia and in South America would really like to be vaccinated again. And i think there is an option that with Serum Institute of india now taking this on and producing 100 million doses next year. There is a real hope that everybody who wants to be vaccinated can be vaccinated. And this rationing of Malaria Vaccines comes to a very quick end. Theres been an explosion in oxfordshire. Its thought it happened at about five hours ago after lightning Hit A Waste Plant north of oxford. The Emergency Services are at the scene. Jon donnison reports. Theres a fire. Oh, my god. Lightning just struck that. Just after seven oclock this evening, a fireball in the night sky north of oxford. Eyewitnesses for miles around in disbelief. Oh, my god. That is flipping massive. We heard like a bang or something, and when i went to the balcony, i saw this huge fireball. And it went like that for almost a minute. Yeah, it felt like it was like some sort of gas or something. I dont know, we were a bit scared. The explosion was caused when a Lightning Strike hit a biogas storage tank at the Severn Trent Green Power plant at cassington. The company said it was now working with the Emergency Services to secure the site. In a statement, Thames Valley police advised People Living nearby to stay home, shut windows and doors, and keep away from the scene. But despite the force of the explosion, both police and the company said they believed nobody had been hurt. Jon donnison, bbc news. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Its the Second Police force to confirm its looking into claims against the comedian. Four women accused mr brand of sexual assaults and rape in a joint investigation by the sunday times, the times and channel 4s dispatches. Youre live with bbc news. The former Chief Executive of Global Fashion brand Abercrombie Fitch and his british partner are facing allegations of exploitation from men recruited for sex events they hosted around the world. A bbc investigation found a highly organised operation running the events, with a Middleman Finding Young Adult men for mikejeffries and his partner matthew smith. Eight men told the bbc they attended these events, some of whom alleged they were exploited or abused. Mrjeffries and mr smith did not respond to requests for comment. Abercrombie says its conducting an independent investigation into the allegations. Rianna croxford has the story. In the early 20005, Abercrombie And Fitch became one of the hottest labels in the us and around the world. Sexualised imagery and provocative billboards turned the teen retailer, which also owns the hollister brand, into a multibillion dollar sensation. The man behind the vision was then ceo mikejeffries. Mike was tireless. He was very energetic and boisterous. He was an incredibly big personality. He would explode into a room. Bbc panorama has uncovered a highly organised International Operation recruiting young adult men for sex with mikejeffries over several years, when he was the ceo of the brand. This experience, i think it broke me, and it mentally messed me up. Two men have agreed to tell me their accounts on camera. They attended separate events hosted by Mike Jeffries in 2010 and 2011. Both men say they were recruited and auditioned by a middle man, james jacobson, known to the men asjim. David says mrjacobson led him to believe he was pursuing a modelling opportunity. I was made to believe, look, this is where everybody gets their start. This is where you want to get your start. It was like he was selling fame. And the price was compliance. David says compliance meant engaging in a sexual act with mrjacobson. Seven more men ive spoken to say they also met with jim. The men Say Mrjacobson was part of a Well Oiled Machine which included recruiters, drivers and other staff. Mrjacobson told the bbc any encounters were fully consensual, not coercive. He said he had no recollection of making promises of modelling opportunities, and that everyone whom he came into contact with who attended these events went in with their eyes wide open. This is the route the men would have taken when they were on their way to the hamptons, when they were going to go and meet with mikejeffries. 0nce through the audition, the men would then go to an event hosted by mrjeffries and his british partner, matthew smith. Some were held at their home here in the exclusive new york Coastal Community the hamptons. Barrett said he was introduced to mrjacobson by an older model who he felt indebted to, and knew there would be some kind of sexual activity. David said he was not expecting sex to take place at the hamptons. I was taken, chaperoned over to the main house, to the doors that entered into the bedroom where everything was happening. And then. Told to disrobe. Barrett said he engaged in an intimate act with another man. David says mrjeffries had sex with him. So i didnt feel safe to, like, say no or, i dont feel comfortable with this. I dont really know what would have happened. I didnt feel like i had any choice. Both men say they felt leaving didnt seem to be an option because mrjeffries private staff were supervising the event, including in the bedroom. They also say they were asked to sign Nondisclosure Agreements beforehand, and were not given any copies to take away. It did feel like they were trying to scare us. Thats what it felt like. It felt like intimidation. Both men were paid around 2500 after the event they attended. Still hoping it may lead to modelling work, david went to further events with mrjeffries and mr smith, both in the us and around the world. Two us lawyers who reviewed evidence uncovered by the bbc said prosecutors should investigate whether the allegations could amount to sex trafficking. The bbc has made repeated attempts to contact mrjeffries and mr smith. They have not responded. Abercrombie and fitch told us it is appalled and disgusted by the allegations about their former ceos behaviour. It said a new executive Leadership Team has transformed the companys brand and culture, adding, the company has Zero Tolerance for abuse, harassment or discrimination of any kind. Weeks after canada accused india of playing a role in the death of a sikh leader, campaigners in the uk have asked the Chief Coroner for an inquest into the sudden death of a pro khalistan activist in birmingham. Avtar singh khandas Sudden Death Injune comes after having reportedly been accused of pulling down the Indian Nationalflag at a protest in london by indian authorities. West Midlands Police found no suspicious circumstances but campaigners want his death reviewed. Earlier i spoke to barrister and Campaign Leader michael polak. So in this case, the persecution goes back a long time. His father was summarily executed in the 905. He was sent to the United Kingdom because his family thought that he would be safe here. A number of threats were made to him because hes a sikh. Hes a sikh leader. And then after the Indian High Commission protests, itjust got worse and worse. And he was contacted by the Indian Security services who made direct threats to him and threats to his family. He was taken into hospital in birmingham and he died four days later. He died on the 15th ofjune, which is three days before the assassination of the sikh leader in canada. And west Midlands Police didnt really carry out an investigation. They didnt speak to any of his friends. They didnt even visit his home. So these were all the basic things you do if you were going to carry out an effective investigation into his death. But having said that, the west Midlands Police issued a statement in which they did say that they conducted a thorough review and found no suspicious circumstances. How do you respond to that statement then . Was just simply they did not properly investigate this case to investigate a case such as this. Youd have to speak to all the people whove been without trial in the days before. Been with him in the days before. Youd have to go to his place of work. To his property and look at that. They simply didnt do this. They spent very little time on the case. They might not have appreciated the significance of the case, but they should have because the National Investigative agency from india had come and spent time with British Police just in april of this year. And so they should have known that there were threats to seek activists. To Sikh Activists. And its quite noticeable in the united states. The fbi have been going around to seek activists and telling to Sikh Activists and telling them they need to be careful because of a possible fear for their lives. But nothing like that has happened in the United Kingdom. Pressure has been mounting onjapan s government to legalise same sex unions after a court ruled, earlier this year, that a ban on them was unconstitutional. The worlds Third Largest economy is the only g7 country not to fully recognise same sex couples or offer them clear legal protection. 0ur tokyo correspondent Shaimaa Khalil has been speaking to members of the Lgbt Community who said they dont feel seen or protected in their own country. Perfecting their pirouettes. In a country where lgbtq rights are still not fully recognised, this is not your average japanese couple. It was in a ballet class that keitaro and hideki met more than a year ago. Theyve been inseparable since then. Keitaro came out in his late teens, but hideki still hides his sexuality from his family. He says he doesnt want to shock his 90 year old mother. Despite that, he was happy for us to film him with his partner. Translation i think that discrimination is still very strong injapan, as is the environment in which i am surrounded. When youre Walking Around the city, it would be nice to see more same sex couples. Well, i wish that more people would not have to live a double life. I think if there is recognition, itll be easier. Therell be less judgments, prejudice. So, people i think people will feel safe to to come out and be themselves. Parliament has recently enacted a law to promote understanding of sexual minorities, despite fierce pushback from conservative lawmakers within the ruling party. It sparked a debate on local media and the wording angered many activists who say that the legislation could be used against the lgbtq community. What we are concerned with the most is the article number 12, which states that the government and the local Government Schools and companies implement necessary measures to expand understanding, they need to take into consideration peoples peace of mind, l all peoples peace of mind. This article implies that lgbtql people are someone who make majority, other people, really feel scared. One of the things they hear a lot in same sex couples here is that they feel invisible in the eyes of society and those in power. And that translated notjust in the legislation or lack thereof, but in their daily lives. For example, many of them cant get a joint mortgage to buy a house together. And if one partner dies, the other has no legal right to any inheritance. They are simply not seen as a family. Aki and hikari are new mothers. But only one of them, aki, who gave birth, will have custody of their child. They feel uncomfortable showing their identity or using their real names. Despite the support around them, many still do not know about the relationship. Translation | dont feel. We are protected as a couple. When i gave birth, i wrote a will to appoint my partner as the legal guardian of our son in case i die during labour. And even that didnt guarantee her custody. It was parenthood that encourage them to come out with theirfamilies and to think about marriage. They wanted their son to be able to explain his mothers relationship, they tell me. The couple are now legally married in canada but not in their home country. Its been a warm first few days of october, following on from the record breaking september. Well, joint record, as you can see, for maximum temperatures that was tied with the record set in 1895. Now, all that heat and humidity has triggered some thunderstorms during the latter part of monday theyve continued through the night. Lots of excess rain, standing water, slow to clear away. As well as that, this Weather Front here as well, just lingering in south eastern parts first thing. So a bit misty and a bit grey, showers following towards the north. This is the Weather System i talked about, the rain starting to ease, but leaving lots of damp, misty, murky weather and then potentially some thunderstorms following in the wake of that Weather Front. Certainly a fresh night and a cool night to end in the north, but it will still be quite muggy in the south with that lingering misty, low cloud and damp weather, perhaps a few thundery showers across southern areas first thing. But in terms of dry weather improving, bright, more blue sky around, but scattered showers most frequent in the north and the west for the day. And a brisk wind whisking those showers through, 14 19 our highs. And it will be notably cooler feeling or fresher feeling across england and wales because of the breeze, and also weve lost the humidity. Now, by wednesday, weve got High Pressure starting to build towards the south. Further Weather Fronts, though, invading northern parts, particularly scotland and then northern ireland. And that Weather Front might well become slow moving across parts of southern scotland, northern england. So there are warnings out appropriately for the end of the week. To the south, mainly dry and fine, but quite a bit of cloud around, showers follow it to the north. Look at those temperatures. Theyre still around about 14 19, just a little bit, still, above average, actually for the time of year. We keep our Weather Front with us through wednesday night into thursday, probably pushing northwards once again, another pulse of rain on that Weather System. So there are, as i say, warnings out for the rainfall in northern and western parts of the uk for the latter part of the week. But for many parts further south, its dry, its fine you and it will get warmer. In fact, were hinting the Computer Models are hinting at temperatures getting into the low to mid 20s across many parts as we go into the weekend. The warnings are on the website.
