Live from our studio in singapore. Welcome to the programme. Starting with news in the us where its been a busy day for politics with President Biden at the centre of events both willingly, and unwillingly. The day began with the republicans in Congress Launching Impeachment Hearings they accuse him of profiting from his sons Business Ventures while serving as vice president. Its worth noting that several previous investigations, including one by thejustice department, hasnt found any evidence of that but the republicans say there is a case to answer. The house has uncovered amount of evidence Thatjoe Biden abused his Public Office for his financial gain. For years hes lied to the American People about his knowledge of and his participation in his familys corrupt business schemes. While that was happening in washington President Biden was making his way to arizona, where he made the latest of his set piece speeches as he campaigns for re election. This one was about threats to democracy and its pretty clear where he thinks theyre coming from there is something dangerous in america there is something dangerous in america right now. The maga movement. There is no question that todays Republic Party is driven that todays Republic Party is driven and intimidated by maga republican extremists. Earlier, i spoke to sean dilley, our correspondent in washington, to get the latest. There is no evidence of any president s being removed from office. Its down to the Upper Chamber in congress to vote by a 2000 majority to remove that person for office and we saw with all the impeachment before that the senate would not do that, particularly at the moment. There is a 51 49 majority even with mr menendez his got his own legal troubles at the moment. Why now . Well, the speaker is under a lot of pressure from the hardline republican party, people including Marjorie Taylor green which is looking increasingly like a Government Shutdown. This sunday, the politicians in congress have got until saturday to reach a deal there. What it is about is mr mccarthy keeping the support of that hardline republican party. He said he wouldnt even move towards Impeachment Proceedings without a vote on the house of congressmen and women, the house of representatives. He buckled under a lot of pressure. You have to bear in mind that the speaker in congress is not like the speaker in the uk House Of Commons or indeed the canadian House Of Commons. He is worried about his own position. Mariams husband was hit by shrapnel then but he didnt want to be filmed. The family are being hosted by a woman who fled Nagorno Karabakh in the last war. Now she is helping a new wave of refugees. Today, they all saw the official decree that their separatist republic, which they call artsakh, was being dissolved. Translation 30 years building our lives there l and they say there is no artsakh any more. That is a tragedy for the armenian people. But we have no strength left to fight because we were left alone. We were abandoned. Nagorno karabakh is rapidly emptying out. But as they go, the Ethnic Armenians are not only leaving their homes and their property, they are also surrendering their long dream of independence. The maldives will choose a new president this weekend, in a run off race that is being framed the ncumbent developed close diplomatic and commercial relations with india, while the challenger advocates closer ties with china. But the geopolitical rivalry is hanging over an election that is dominated by issues from terrorism to climate change. Earlier i spoke to azim zahir a maldives analyst and a lecturer at the university of western australia. I asked him if the maldives was caught in a tug of war between india and china. There is a truth to some extent to that. In fact if you look at the opposition campaign, one of the key pledges is that independent sovereignty is under threat and that is from india so a key pledge for him is that if he gets elected he would be seen to send back indian technical and Navy Personnel stationed in the maldives. So one of his key pledges is that hes going to send back these indian personnel presenting in the maldives and a core part of his voter base, the most vocal part has been conducted in an india 0ut campaign and that will not be taken very positively by the current. If the opposition gets elected then there could be a very serious diplomatic row between the two. From a local perspective, the kind of rivalry between india and china doesnt completely define this election. There are a lot of issues that are more locally driven but to the extent that this is definitely a contest between two Political Parties with completely different sides when it comes to india china rivalry and the growing competition within the indian ocean. Four of six women rescued from the back of a lorry in france on wednesday must leave the country within 30 days, a French Public prosecutor said. The four vietnamese and two iraqi women were found by police after getting into the lorry, which they believed was heading for the uk. One of the women spoke from inside the vehicle to a bbcjournalist, who then contacted the french police. 60 young women are sitting inside a lorry in france. They were in big trouble at the time. I was in very, very distressed state. I was so panicking. I thought maybe they didnt have a lot of time left to get out safely. I realized that there were three people in the group supposed to be together with them, but then the three people decided not to get into the truck and they took a photo of the back number of the lorry they were in. And i send that information to the police to check down the lorry. At the very beginning i was so horrified. I wanted to wait till they thought that i was the only one who could help them at that point and they didnt know where to do it. You must have felt such a great sense of responsibility because you had the power to potentially save their lives. No, i dont think i have any power. Ijust try my best. I didnt think a lot about that. Ijust feel so relieved that, oh, finally they are safe. Nearly 1,000 people have died of dengue in bangladesh in recent weeks. Authorities say this is the countrys most severe outbreak of the disease yet and they are struggled to contain the spread of the disease with hospitals overwhelmed. Bbc Bengali Service corresponent Akbar Hossain gave us an update of the situation from dhaka. A this is a very extraordinary situation. We have seen this monsoon. I have got the just published figure by the bangladeshs health department, which says that nearly 200,000 people have been tested positive for dengue and nearly 1000 people died. And in the last several months and the death figure is increasing every day. To 15 people are dying in recent weeks and the number of infected people infected with dengue is increasing every day. Initially, it started in dhaka city. The Dengue Outbreak, the mosquito borne viral fever. Now it is spread across the country in all 64 districts and patients are increasing in bangladeshs rural areas. As you mentioned earlier, the hospitals are overwhelming many hospitals in bangladesh and now the over capacity. So they are struggling to cope with the patient. And many hospitals are facing the shortage of intravenous fluid, which is necessary to treat their dengue patients, to rehydrate them. So in the meantime, you know, the government has launched Awareness Campaign to prevent dengue, but with no success. Many experts say that this issue, when they warned that the Dengue Outbreak might be at the severe stage, but it was not taken care of by the authorities because they thought it was a seasonal disease and it might go away. So there was no long term planning to curb mosquito and to fight against mosquito as and because this is a mosquito borne viral disease. Lets take a look at some other stories making the headlines. A teenage boy has been arrested in connection with the cutting down of one of the uks most photographed the sycamore gap tree, on Hadrians Wall in northumberland. The word iconic can be overused. But this tree at sycamore gap in northumberland most definitely was. Gracing many a photo taken at Hadrians Wall, it was the perfect model to show off the northern lights. And it became truly famous when it featured in the 1991 film robin hood prince of thieves. The great one, i am home but last night, the tree was felled. And the reason it clearly wasnt an accident or a result of last nights storm agnes, is the very clean cut line. It is really sad that someone has felt a drive to do this, because i can imagine whoever or whatever people did this know how important sycamore gap is. Many were shocked at the sight that greeted them here today. Everybody feels bereft by it. Who would do it . Its devastating. Its heartbreaking. Just a special place, i proposed to my wife here. I saw it as a young kid in the states. I for those responsible for the tree, they hope all is not lost. Its a very healthy tree, we can see that now because of the stump. It may well grow a coppice from the stump, if we can nurture that, that might be one of the best outcomes and we keep the tree.
