The Singing Detective. Ive got you under my skin. What is on . Falstaff. A word. Maigret. Welcome, welcome, to another year at hogwarts. And of course, dumbledore. Michael gambon was a serious acting talent. He never did seem to take it too seriously. Tom, tom, you are sitting here. Back where i started. His Stage Breakthrough was in alan ayckbourn s The Norman Conquests and in particular a scene in which he ends up dining on the little chair. You are all right where you are. Carry on amongst yourselves. The table was down. I actually saw a bloke one night fall out of his seat in the circle, laughing. You couldnt stop them. The whole house up, brilliant. His first big tv role had been a bit of Scottish Swashbuckling in the borderers. Michael gambon had grown up in london. He hated school and left without any qualifications but he liked acting and armed with a cv that was pure gambon esque invention, he got a job in dublin. They like their meat well spiced in edinburgh. Just kim, my love. He had learned his craft on the job, most crucially when sir Lawrence Olivia had taken him on at the national. The shame of this and in 1986, the Singing Detective made Michael Gambon a household name. That name became associated with a certain corner on top gear. He enjoyed the accolade. Applause. He had a taste for devilment and hoodwinking gullible journalists. Plays. Dumbledore and harry potter may have brought him a new global recognition, but he was defiantly un starry. He described his face as looking like an old wet bag, but in beckett, he could use it to hold an audience without saying a word. Beneath that cloak of mischief was a seriously good actor. Sir Michael Gambon who has died and the tributes arejust sir Michael Gambon who has died and the tributes are just flowing in. You can find many of them on the bbc website and we will speak to people throughout the day as we remember a remarkable life and a leading figure on film, stage and on television. The extraordinary work of man that will be reflected on and his life on bbc news. We have a development to bring you on the fatal stabbing of a 15 year old schoolgirl in croydon here in london. The Police Havejust released her name. She is eliyanna andam. Police are questioning a 17 year old boy who has been arrested over her stabbing. She has been described as a much loved young woman with a Bright Future full stop she died after being attacked with a foot long life on her way to school during the rush hour on wednesday. She has now been named as eliyanna andam. The bbc understands, police are investigating her death right now. They have until friday morning to charge or release a young boy he was known to the victim and was arrested an hour later. That boy is 17 years old. Her name, 15 year old, eliyanna andam. Next, to the crisis that has been unfolding in the caucuses. The Separatist Leader of Nagorno Karabakh has formally ended the territorys struggle for independence. Samvel shakhramanyan issued a decree saying that at the end of the year, the self declared republic would cease to exist. More than half the Ethnic Armenian population has fled since azerbaijan seized control of the region just over a week ago. The exodus of Ethnic Armenians surpassed 65,000 on wednesday. It has now surpassed 70,500 people. Many have ended up in the Armenian Border town of goris, from where our correspondent Sarah Rainsford gave us this update. There are huge crowds here in the centre of goris this morning, lots and lots of people. Tens of thousands have now left Nagorno Karabakh and are heading here to armenia. And in border towns like this, there is now a massive aid effort under way. It is notjust the government that is helping out, there is also local businesses bringing donations and local people who are offering rooms and houses for people to stay in. We have seen people arriving here with cars packed full of belongings. There was one this morning that had chickens, a cage of chickens strapped to the roof and a bicycle, a childs bike on top of that. People are bringing everything they can carry, but of course it is not very much, and so their needs are pretty huge as they arrive here. And there are groups of families, large families, lots and lots of children just sitting around on the grass or in some shade here, getting food, getting some help, but really, their future now is pretty uncertain. They dont quite know where they go from here, but what they do know now is that they wont be going back. In fact, there has been a formal statement by the separatist authorities in Nagorno Karabakh, that region that has never been internationally recognised, they have now said that formally speaking, all State Institutions there will be dissolved by the end of this year, and that the republic of artsakh, as armenians call it, will cease to exist. People i have been speaking to here have been very saddened by that, but also they are angry. They say they have been abandoned by the armenian government, that they were abandoned, and this was inevitable. They have called it a tragedy because so many people here have actually fought over the years for the right to be in control of that sliver of territory in the mountains, and now they have had to abandon that of independence. 0lga Ivshina Reports from the azerbaijan capital, baku. That is what is happening as many people cross the border, many of them saying they dont expect to return. 0lga Ivshina Reports from the azerbaijan capital, baku. It is slowly getting to the half, but it is still not half of the population of Nagorno Karabakh. And of course as the situation develops the question remains, what is the Current Situation on the ground, what is going to happen in the next few days . From what i hear, from residents, the situation remains critical. The help they are getting is not enough. The azeri side says they have sent at least six humanitarian convoys and they are ready to deliver more. However, the Karabakh Armenians refused to accept this help, at least directly. But overall it seems the volume of humanitarian effort which beaches Nagorno Karabakh is definitely not enough for the amount of people who are currently trapped there. Just to remind you, all those people are exhausted both physically and mentally because of the nine months de facto blockade. Because the only road that connects Nagorno Karabakh to armenia is currently controlled by the azeri forces, because all of that territory of Nagorno Karabakh is recognised by International Law as the territory of azerbaijan, and azerbaijan has militarily an upper hand now. The biggest question now is, what is happening in those small villages around . What is the situation there . Armenians are afraid that all those people counted now as missing might have died during the recent hostilities. The azeri side denies any accusations of wrongdoing. They say they have targeted only military targets but before there is any International Independent assessment of the situation on the ground, all those questions will remain. A Special Bbc Investigation has found that Police Officers in the uk are widely misusing their Body Worn Cameras by switching them off when force is used, and deleting or not disclosing footage. The National Police chiefs council said the majority of body worn video highlights good policing. 0ur investigations correspondent Noel Titheradge has the story. Three years ago, a black lives matter protest gathered outside downing street, attended by yufial on the left and his sister louisa on the right. The protest was initially peaceful. There was dancing. There were speeches. Two hours in, and that peace was broken. A clash quickly escalated, leading to louisas restraint. I completely blacked out. I couldnt breathe. I was telling the officer, like, help me get my hand. And he continued to rub my face in the ground and kneel on me. The siblings were arrested and charged, accused of assaulting an officer in yufial s case and being threatening or abusive in louisas. Now bbc analysis of multiple body worn videos shown for the first time reveals the force used on the siblings themselves. I was punched in the face. My sister was pushed and then we got charged with assault even though we were assaulted. Weve examined how the incidents unfolded in little over a minute across multiple cameras. Watch here as louisa is pushed backwards by an officers right hand on her neck and left hand on her chest. Just five seconds later, in the far left corner of the screen, a different Body Worn Camera shows yufial being struck by an officer who was then pulled backwards by colleagues. Moments later and having removed herself from the front of the protest to search for her car keys, louisa is restrained by a group of officers. I literally thought i was going to die. I blacked out. Despite what they experienced and the charges they were facing, body worn video revealing officers use of force wasnt initially disclosed to either of them as part of their cases. It was very weird because the evidence that benefited me was put in his case and the evidence that was benefiting him was put in my case. Without us getting the evidence from each of our cases, we probably wouldnt be in the situation that were in right now. It was terrifying. This is really worrying and shocking. And i think the fact that its taken two and a half years for anybody. To get to the bottom of whats happened means its ruined their lives. Baroness caseys review into the met found that the force lacks accountability and transparency. I think the way many Police Officers consider body worn video is that. Its almost to cover the back of the police we all know that arresting people is difficult, but if youve got nothing to hide, release the video, release the information, be transparent and be honest. Louisa deferred starting a law degree for three years, fearing a prosecution. The siblings were eventually acquitted, but both say their two year legalfight had a big impact on their lives. I was working in a retail store in westminster. I lost myjob because they barred me from the area. I was accused of something and i could have spent time away from my family, my daughter, everything that id love for malicious lies. The bbc has also learned that body worn video wasnt disclosed from the camera of the officer who pushed louisa. In a statement, the force told us there were errors with disclosure of evidence and apologised. No action has been taken against any of the officers involved. Cameras are only being put on when officers feel like its necessary or theyre being targeted. Its labelled as protection for the public, but ultimately it protects the police. The home office told the bbc that Police Forces should hold officers accountable to standards and use of cameras must be justified. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. Millions of people may wrongly believe theyre allergic to the common antibiotic penicillin, according to the Royal Pharmaceutical society. New rules have been published for what presenters on flagship bbc programmes can say on social media following a row over gary lineker s posts. In March The Bbc presenter was suspended for a tweet criticising the governments asylum policy, although he was reinstated after a few days. The report says high Profile Presenters should be allowed to express views on issues and policies but should stop short of political campaigning. Gary lineker said the new rules were all very sensible. 0ur Media CorrespondentDavid Sillitto has the story. This is all taking place because of what happened in march when gary lineker was briefly suspended from Match Of The Day because of a tweet. Chaos then ensued when commentators and presenters downed microphones in protest. It led to a rather quieter form of football coverage. The Offending Tweet was a criticism of the governments policy over asylum seekers, which gary lineker described as immeasurably cruel and the language used not dissimilar to that used by germany in the 30s. That row was resolved by the promise of a review which we have today, and a recommendation that high Profile Presenters outside ofjournalism should be able to express views on issues and policies, including matters of political contention, but stopped short of campaigning in Party Politics or for activist organisations. The previous guidance said to not take sides on issues which are party, political or political controversies. And this new approach says you can do that so long as you stay to the facts of the issue itself. So that actually is a significant change, all with a great so that actually is a significant change. The bbc has also named certain programmes such as masterchef, where presenters will have to take extra care about what they say on social media when their programmes are on air. So lord sugar will have to watch what he tweets when the apprentice is on. Dragons den is on the list, but not deborah meaden, only the presenter, evan davis. And Chris Packham is also not on the list, although hes well known for his views on environmental issues. These are guidelines, not hard and fast rules. All of news and current affairs, they are absolutely within the bbc, bound by extremely tight guidelines. And that remains. Its important that because i think you can get lost. Weve also got general guidelines for the whole population that are clear around civility and bringing the bbc into disrepute. But we had a particular challenge and weve had our challenges around this group of people who are faces of the bbc and present our flagship programme. So today weve announced that guidance which we can talk about, which clearly says there are some fixed parameters around political campaigning or criticising politicians, but also recognise, i think, realistically, where we are in terms of their ability to talk about issues they care about. So if you present strictly, youre on the flagship list. So too the antiques roadshow, the radio one Breakfast Programme and Match Of The Day. In essence, if you happen to be the presenter of a well known sports programme, think carefully about your tweets when the football is on. So lets go through the findings with helena wilkinson. There are some grey areas. There has already been some criticism of this report. 0ne already been some criticism of this report. One other thing is many viewers want to know is will it be clear exactly what someone like gary lineker is able to tweet . I clear exactly what someone like gary lineker is able to tweet . Lineker is able to tweet . I think david mentioned lineker is able to tweet . I think david mentioned in lineker is able to tweet . I think david mentioned in his lineker is able to tweet . I think david mentioned in his piece. Lineker is able to tweet . I think. David mentioned in his piece that these are just guidelines, not hard and fast rules. What we heard from the report and from the Director General tim davie is that these high Profile Presenters on a number of flagship programmes like much of the day and masterchef and strictly, that they must not endorse or attach a Political Party but there seems to be quite a bit of leeway in that they will be able to express views on issues and policies including contentious topics. I think the real test will be next time one of these presenters who work for the bbc is that not necessarily staff, next time they tweet, will be open to interpretation. For example, next time gary lineker tweets about something political, how will that be perceived and how will the bbc say and do that tweet . And whether they see it fits in the guidelines are published today. We know tim davie, the Director General of the bbc has Put Impartiality at the front and centre of his leadership said he took on the role three years ago and he will be hoping that these new guidelines will provide some clarity but again, what it means in practice, we will have to wait and see what some of these presenters start tweeting about various issues. Thank you. We have a development to bring it on the gb newsjournalist we have a development to bring it on the gb news journalist dan wootton. Trainee surgeons in the uk have started using a new ai tool to help guide them through complex brain surgery. Its hoped the new technology, being developed at University College london, could be used by surgeons during live surgery within two years making these types of procedures safer and more effective. The government says this kind of ai assistant has the potential to be A Real Game Changer for healthcare in the uk. The bbc s Global Health correspondent Tulip Mazumdar has the future of health care is changing rapidly. Here, machines have been learning how best to perform brain surgery, and now theyre training the surgeons of tomorrow. Based on the ai, can you see . Trainee surgeon nicola is one of the first to be using Artificial Intelligence to help her learn about Keyhole Surgery at the centre of the brain. Today, shes Training In A Mock Theatre on a pretend patient. So, here we see a simulated pituitary operation, and right in the centre of the screen is the pituitary tumour. The ai has learnt from analysing videos of this type of surgery where exactly the surgeon is in the brain, and can help guide them at critical points. So, its very useful because it principally helps me orientate myself during the surgery and helps me identify what steps and what stages are coming up next. And whats this in yellow on the ai . Whilst the ai trains nicola, its also quickly learning how to do all this in real life. What were hoping for is that, in the near future, in the next year or two, we will introduce this ai in theatres, in real time, in patients, to help Support Surgeons making those decisions during the operation and help provide a better quality of surgery. This ai system has learned from watching and analysing more than 200 videos of this type of surgery. It would take your average Brain Surgeon around ten years to gain that level of experience, but its taken this ai around ten months. Yes, it teaches the ai that today. Like the technology itself, regulation around Artificial Intelligence in healthcare is still evolving. These are two of the specialists tasked with teaching the ai and ensuring patient safety. How do you make sure what youre teaching the ai is absolutely correct, that its not going to sort of run away with itself with information that is possibly incomplete . So, the type of ai we use is called supervised learning. Myself and some of the other members of our team are Spending Hundreds of hours making sure that the information were feeding the al to teach it is as accurate as it can be. And here comes the tumour. This tech isnt replacing surgeons any time soon. Its still a human that will control the scalpel. But the possibilities for al in healthcare are endless. Im very bullish that, in the medium to long term, well see ai supporting our work as surgeons, notjust for Pituitary Surgery and neurosurgery, but for all types of surgery. Tulip mazumdar, bbc news. Lets just show you what is being well on the bbc news website. The death of sir Michael Gambon is now the most read story and now there is this one, a huge amount of anger being expressed because this famous tree, one of the most iconic trees and most photographed trees in britain has been felled in an act of vandalism. This is the Sycamore Gap Tray which is just buy at hadrian wall in northumberland, apparently cut down overnight. Some people call it the robin hood tray because it was in the movie robin hood, it is believed it was deliberately fouled. You will see it is now a scene where the police have tape around it and they are investigating this as an act of vandalism. You will see beautiful images as well, the police, of the tree at night. People going there today to pay tribute saying how upset and devastated they are and many life changing moments of the people. One couple described they got engaged there. This story is doing well on the website and police are now investigating. Hello. Storm agnes has swirled away from our shores, but that doesnt mean its completely plain sailing weather wise. In fact, as we head towards the end of the day, it is going to turn increasingly wet across some western parts. 0n the satellite picture, you can see yesterdays storm system, this curl of cloud pushing away. Northeast was but another Weather System now pushing in from the west that will turn things increasingly wet. And its already quite breezy out there. In fact, really quite windy up towards the northwest of the uk. Outbreaks of rain developing across some western parts further east, largely dry with some hazy sunshine, 17 to 20 degrees. And then through the evening we will see this Band Of Rain Moving across the West Of Scotland and northern ireland. Could be some heavy thundery bursts and some squally winds and then turning really wet through the evening across parts of wales, particularly south wales, up into the midlands, some parts of south wales could see enough rain for some flooding and some localised disruption. That rain then pushes its way towards the south east corner. Behind that, clear skies, further showers racing into the western side of scotland where it will stay really quite windy. Temperatures of ten degrees in aberdeen and glasgow, but 16 there in london. A mild night down towards the southeast where this Weather Front will still be clearing away first thing in the morning. High pressure to the south of us, low pressure to the north that will bring something of a split in weather fortunes. Essentially, its a day of sunshine and showers, but most of the showers across western and particularly North Western parts where it is going to stay windy. In fact, gales are quite likely in the far north of scotland. The further south you are fewer showers. In fact, it should stay dry with some sunshine. 18 degrees in cardiff, 19 in plymouth, always a little bit cooler further north, 14 there in stornoway. Now this area of High Pressure toppling its way through could give quite a chilly night on friday night. And then for saturday, here comes another Weather System, another bouts of wet weather thats likely to push across northern ireland, up into scotland, affecting northwest england, parts of wales, further south and east. It should stay largely dry, perhaps with some sunshine lifting those temperatures to 20 or 21 degrees could actually be even warmer down towards the southeast on sunday. This band of cloud and Showery Rain Across Parts of england and wales. Further north, a mix of sunny spells and showers, temperatures ranging from 15 to around 23 degrees. Bye for now.
