Staying with the environment, and a bbc investigation suggests that three major Water Companies in the uk illegally discharged Sewage Hundreds Of Times last year on days when it was not raining. The practice, known as dry spilling is banned because it can lead to higher concentrations of sewage in waterways. Raw sewage can legally be discharged if the system is overwhelmed, but only after heavy rain or snow. Live now to our environment correspondent, jonah fisher at langstone harbour. In turn in terms of what you found in this investigation, tell us more. This was quite a long and complex investigation done by various different parts of the bbc. But we effectively dead is requested details from all nine english Water Companies into exactly when they had been spilling sewage, either into rivers and into seas. Three of the Water Companies provided us with that information, thames water, wessex and southern water. We then took a huge amount of data and crunched it with weather data to try and find out when those spills took place during dry weather. As you mentioned, it is legal, but clearly undesirable for Water Companies to spill raw sewage during wet weather, when they are overwhelmed, when there is too much water in the system, but it is illegal if they do it during dry weather. We crunched all the numbers, we put the data alongside weather data from the met office. We discovered from just from these three companies, something in these three companies, something in the region of 400 potentially illegal spills took place last year. In terms of solutions, that has been so much focus on Water Companies, the bonuses paid out, the dividends over the years. What are they saying about potential solutions to all of the schools that is consensus that something has to be done and that it is going to involve a lot of money. I have been speaking to the Water Companies over the last few days, they are pretty clear that it is going to take billions of pounds of investment to try and modernise the Sewage System here so that we dont get these spills, legal or illegal, any more. There are proposals put forward that would cost huge amounts of money to do that. Campaigners say at the Water Companies have taken profits and dividends from customers for a long time but are not doing a particularly good job. What a company should pay for it. I dont think that is going to happen. From speaking to the government and the Water Companies, it is clear that the huge cost of this will be passed on to customers through their water bills. People here in in the uk should really expect their water bills to rise if they want this problem solved.
