At 11. But england booked their place in the final with two late goals. Lauren hemp taking advantage of some hesitancy in the Australian Defence to put england back ahead in the game. Alessia russo then found space on the right hand side with four minutes to go to net a third and confirm englands place in their first ever World Cup Final. So england now take on spain in the womens World Cup Final on sunday. Our reporter emily brown was watching the game at lioness ella toone s former club, astley and tyldesleyjunior Football Club in manchester. And our crew there captured the moment lauren hemp scored englands second goal. Cheering. Earlier, i spoke to former england captain, gillian coultard, and footballer Natasha Dowie and got their reaction to the lionesses win against australia it has been a long time coming. Obviously i went to the 1995 world cup and got knocked out in the quarterfinals but everything has improved 1,000 . I cant believe how much investment has been put in there, when you look at the national lottery, you know, 50 million over ten years, that is a lot of money, and we are reaping the rewards for it. That is what it is going to take, the more money we put into the game, the more rewards we get. Natasha, quite a moment, what did you feel today when you saw that england were going to be in the final on sunday . We are getting used to this now, which is great, having played for my country i know how special that is and this england team, they have a different mentality, a big part of that is sarina wiegman, i think she gets her plaudits but not enough. That is four finals in a row now as a manager, and you know, and this england team, she is undefeated with this team except for the friendly against australia. So what she has done in transforming this team, that always had talented players, but now talented players that have the winning mentality and are going to go on and be favourites in many tournaments to come. Lets bring gillian back in, there is a lot riding on sarina wiegman, she has had a success a year ago, with englands victory in the euros. What kind of things will show be thinking about, in terms of strategy when it comes to taking on spain on sunday . To be fair they will enjoy the moment, they will get back on the grass tomorrow. I believe she will have a game plan already, she does her Due Diligence with the team, so i think she will do well, she willjust take each game as it comes and treat it like any other game but how can you treat it like any other game . Its a World Cup Final, so i am sure there will be a bit of pressure but she is sarina so i am sure she can handle that. You have played in world cups before, you played in the quarterfinals i think in 1995, but you also played in a uefa final in 1984, and is it right you have also played in penalty shoot outs, and that is always is one of englands demons, you know, in a championship, will there be penalties . What kind of advice would you have for the players ahead of sunday when it comes to penalties . I dont think you can give anybody advice really. Its a mentality thing. I dont think they are scared of taking one. The pressure of the mentality of it and how you can will handle it, and how you can handle it, but you have seen how resilient the england girls are. It doesnt matter who will take one. They are all in it together, squad of 23 and that is how you will win a world cup. Staying with you gillian, we are looking at pictures of you when you played for england, when you captained them as well of course. You have played in a world cup, what was it like for you . Very different, we were over in sweden, the games were a lot shorter, whereas now obviously in the group games they are a bit longer. Shorter when you get through to the quarterfinal, very different, fantastic achievement to go to obviously a world cup. I was the first one to score a goal in the womens world cup for england, notjust one, i got two, so i am fortunate with that accolade as well. My time has been, we have laid that path for the next generation to come, a bit like tash. She has played before, its the next level now for the next kids coming along. Amazing to think how much has changed in womens football in england. Inflation in the uk has fallen sharply, to its lowest level for more than a year. The rate at which prices rise dropped to 6. 8 in the year tojuly . Thats down from 7. 9 injune. Its partly because food price increases have been slowing down and also because of a fall in energy costs. Inflation hit a peak of 11. 1 in october last year, but now wages are rising higher than prices. Our Chief Economics correspondent Dharshini David has more. It is the case as you say, that inflation has slowed considerably in the latest month and it is largely down to the fact that Energy Prices arent quite as high as they were, because of the way that a cap is put on them here in the uk, but, just to correct, it is still the case, however, that households up and down the country will be feeling the pain because wages arent overtaking inflation just as yet. It may be the case next month we find out there has been that turning point, but as it is many households are going to be feeling the pain still and a lot is coming through food prices, because even though that rate has slowed, what we are seeing is food prices still on average 15 up on where we were a year ago. It is still the case that some costs are rising for manufacturers of food and that means that they are trying to pass those on to customers but it is notjust about that, we have also got what is called services inflation, so the likes of hotels, restaurants, putting up prices by as much as io . And part of that is to do with this very strange picture we are getting in the uk of there are some who are finding it really hard to make ends meet as the basics get more expensive but some have savings stashed away from the pandemic or bigger wage rises they can use to finance spending on things like services, we call them, that is what the Bank Of England looks at closely, and that is why it is expected they are going to raise rates once again, come september. That is what i was going to come on to next. What this might mean for Interest Rates, whether we might see another hike coming up. It certainly looks like that way, as i was saying its the case that inflation is pretty strong, it is more than three times as high as the Bank Of England target. Now it does take months and it can take up to two years for a change in Interest Rates to feed through to inflation, and that is true of most countries but what we are seeing at the moment is the fact that inflation has been stubborn in the uk, much more so than in other countries, so we are looking at a picture where the Bank Of England is having to engineer deliberately a slow down in consumer spending, and it does that by pushing up the interest rate, half of households with a mortgage will have felt that pain, so many hundreds of thousands more who will feel it in the coming months so getting inflation down does come as a significant price, that is for those households who are borrowers. Any reaction from the government briefly . What we are seeing is the Prime Minister on a visit to leicestershire, welcoming the fall in inflation but saying there is more work to be done, he said there is light at the end of the tunnel but economists are warning that, you know, prices are higher than they were a year ago, there is much work to be done to bring inflation back down so that light might feel dim for the minute. Thejury in the the jury in the trial of nurse lucy letby is continuing deliberations at Manchester Crown court. She is accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill at least ten others. At the countess of Chester Hospital between june others. At the countess of Chester Hospital betweenjune 2015 others. At the countess of Chester Hospital between june 2015 and june 2016 will stop she denies all charges. Lucy gray has sent this update from Manchester Crown court. The jury have been deliberating for more than 100 hours at Manchester Crown court. Last week the judge gave them a majority direction, meaning he would accept verdicts if ten out of 11 jurors were agreed. There has been a lot of evidence for them to talk through. The trial has been going on ten months now and they were given ipads at the start of the trial because they knew there would be so much evidence for them to sift through, thousands and thousands of pages of evidence. Lucy letby, a 33 year old nurse originally from hereford is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder ten others during her time on the Neonatal Unit at the countess of Chester Hospital. The time referred to is betweenjune 2015 and june 2016. The Neonatal Unit is where babies would be taken if they were sick or premature, they would go there soon after birth. They said the one thing that links these instances, these deaths and near fatal collapses, was that lucy letby was on shift at the time. Lucy letby was on shift at the time. Lucy letby denied all the charges against her. She was in court for 1h days giving evidence. Her defence is that this could have happened through natural occurrences. She also talked about the Neonatal Unit saying it was overstretched and understaffed. She talked about serious failings in the unit itself. Her parents, lucy letby s parents have been in court throughout the case over the last ten months, and also the families of the 17 babies have been here. They have been in court here in manchester but have also been able to watch remotely. They have sat through the harrowing details over the last ten months and now they wait for those verdicts to come back. Lets look at some other stories making news. A bbc investigation has heard from ukrainian Prisoners Of War who say they were subjected to torture, including frequent beatings and electric shocks, while held in russia. A dozen former captives described extreme violence and ill treatment in apparent violations of International Humanitarian law. Many of them surrendered in the city of Mariupol Last year. They were taken to a Detention Facility in the Southern Russian city of taganrog before being released in exchanges. We can speak to hugo bachega in our newsroom who worked on that investigation. Tell us about the testimony you have been hearing from people held as Prisoners Of War. I spent weeks in Ukraine TrackingDown Ukrainians who had been taken to this facility. What they describe is a situation of extreme abuse, psychological abuse, physical abuse. They say captives are tortured, given electric shocks, frequent beatings. There is no health care provided, Food Portions are very small. So you have a situation where prisoners are said to have been dying in this facility because of this level of abuse. We interviewed a dozen former captives and i think what really struck me was what they described was that this wasnt something done by a handful of bad guys or by a guard who had an argument at home and decided to torture somebody. They said this was routine, this was the Modus Operandi in this facility. Keep in mind that no International Observers have been allowed into this facility. The United Nations and red cross have been trying to visit this facility to see the conditions there but russian authorities have not allowed them to enter this facility in the south of the country. I have shared my findings with human rights organisations, even with the office of the United NationsHuman Rights Office and they say they have heard similar claims and cases, not only from this particular location but also other locations where Prisoners Of War are being held. Also other locations where Prisoners Of Warare being held. I also other locations where Prisoners Of War are being held. I think this gives an indication that this is happening not only in this particular facility but also in other places across the country. When i was in kyiv i interviewed the ukrainian ombudsman for human rights who told us 90 of the ukrainians who told us 90 of the ukrainians who have been returned in those prisoner exchanges, they say they were tortured in these facilities, so the situation is a very concerning situation. He said there is nothing he can do, really, because all these facilities are now under russian control and no International Observers have been allowed to get to those facilities and talk to those Prisoners Of War and talk to those Prisoners Of War and actually see for themselves the conditions these people are facing. Hugo bachega, thank you. And you might see behind him, that article he has written for the bbc news website which contains much more detail. We can bring you Breaking News that has just come into the newsroom. Junior doctors in scotland have voted conclusively to accept the latest pay offer from the scottish government. That comes from the bma, the British Medical Association in scotland. The union has said that as a result of its consultative vote 81. 64 were in favour of the pay offer, on a turnout of 71. 24 . This yearJunior Doctors in scotland will receive a pay rise of 12. 4 , backdated to april. Some Breaking News that has come in, Junior Doctors in scotland have voted to accept the latest pay offer from the scottish government, and that of course comes after we have seen some strike action. Fresh questions have been raised in the case of Andy Malkinson . The man who spent 17 years in prison for a rape he didnt commit. Documents show the real attacker could potentially have been identified just three years after mr malkinson was jailed. Its emerged police and prosecutors knew back in 2007 that another mans dna was on the clothes of the woman mr malkinson was wrongly imprisoned for raping, yet his conviction was quashed only last month. Joe inwood reports. When Andy Malkinson walked out of court last month, he was finally free. I am not a liar. I am not in denial. But i will tell you who is. He was also furious with the police. Responsible for his wrongful conviction. He was also furious with the police force responsible for his wrongful conviction. Greater Manchester Police are liars. And they are in denial. In 2004, he was convicted of a violent rape purely on the basis of witness identification. There was no dna linking Andy Malkinson to the scene of the crime. But there was the dna of another unknown man on a piece of clothing. The files seen by the bbc reveal that as far back as 2009, greater Manchester Police knew this, as Andy Malkinson told bbc newsnight. I could have been out eight years before i was, yeah. If someone had just looked at that match on the database, if someone had trolled the database . Yes, i have to say, the cclc had the opportunity back in 2010. They failed. The ccrc is the criminal case review commission, the body tasked with investigating miscarriages ofjustice. In 2012, they turned down his request for an appeal. It is thought cost was a factor. They completely dropped i the ball and the human cost for andy and his family, but lets not forget the victim, who, 20 years later is being re traumatised by all this having to come up again as part of andys ifight to have the truth come out, | all of that could have been spared if the commission had done theirjob properly. They need to apologise and do a full internal investigation to find out what went wrong. They are not doing so and for that reason their chairs position is untenable and she needs to resign. For andy, the whole system needs reform. The Justice System in the uk, england, is a big mess. There is no accountability to the police. To the cps. And the ccrc is ineffective. If it looks likejustice is being done, then that is good enough for them. They dont care about the integrity of the convictions. Both police and prosecutors have previously apologised to Andy Malkinson, while the cps said they did disclose the evidence to his lawyers. The ccrc have been approached for comment. Andy malkinson finally has freedom, but it has come at a terrible price. It seems if the system had worked, it also could have come much sooner. Joe inwood, bbc news. The death toll from the wildfires which swept across the Hawaiian Island of maui has risen to 106 with over a thousand more missing. Mauis Police Department have named the first two victims as lahaina residents robert dyckman, who was 7a, and buddy jantoc, who was 79. A State Of Emergency has been declared in canadas remote Northwest Territories where wildfires are threatening the provincial capital, yellowknife. A local official said the far Northern Region was in a crisis situation. Four large blazes are burning near yellowknife. Its mayor has urged its 20,000 residents to be on alert. Canada is experiencing its worst Wildfire Season on record forcing the evacuation of more than 160,000 people. The maiden yacht broke records in 1990 by racing around the world with an all female crew. Now, she is preparing to compete again, taking on 1a other yachts in the Ocean Globe Race. John maguire has the story. Like threading the eye of a needle, maiden squeezed through the especially opened deck, of tower bridge in london. Every time she embarks on a voyage, she and her crew break records, smash glass ceilings, and make headlines. Just as they have for more than 30 years. It was 1990 when Tracy Edwards skippered the first all female crew to compete in the whitbread round the world yacht race, 12 women who changed the face of sailing forever. Heather thomas is the new skipper for the Ocean Globe Race and at 26 is arching younger than tracey was when she raced maiden. It was a bit of a shock when tracey asked me to be the skipper of maiden but i was honoured she let me look after her baby and take it around the world and very excited to be able to skipper an ocean race for the first time. Six years ago tracey rescued her beloved boat from the scrap heap in the indian ocean. Fully restored, she now sails the world as a floating showcase to promote and support education for girls. Her crew for the race is international. So after six years of travelling round the world and covering 77,000 miles, spreading that vital message about education for girls, maiden is about to get back to what she was born to do, she is getting back to racing. The race rules mean they cant use this modern equipment to navigate, they will plot their course using compass bearings, sextants and the stars, as sailors have done since man and woman first set sail. Can you take a bearing off that lateral mark over there. This crew is amazing, so young, they make me feel quite old. I was them then, you know, they are young, they are dynamic, they are excited, they are committed. Everything we were 33 years ago. So maiden is about the take on the world one more time. Some of the paint work and the crew may be new but her ambition and the impact she will have to excite and inspire girls where ever she is seen is the same today, as it has always been. John maguire, bbc news, london. Before we go i want to show you footage of an Unusual Police rescue in the united states. This is the rescue im referring to an ohio Police Officer coming to the aid of a beleaguered racoon with a jar stuck on its head. The two Police Officers were in the right place at the right time, when they came across the creature which had got itself trapped. Bodycam footage shows the officers approaching the animal, before one of them manages to pull off the jar, freeing the animal, which promptly scurried off into the dark. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello there, good afternoon. Lots of dry and sunny weather right across the uk today, particularly for southern counties of northern ireland, england and wales. Blue skies, sunflower fields, as captured by our Weather Watcher in norfolk. A bit of fair weather cloud bubbling up in powys. As we head through the rest of the week, although it is looking wet and windy on friday, there will be lots of dry weather, some sunny spells and it will turn warmer and more humid, especially by night. But for the rest of this afternoon, we will keep the sunshine for most areas, i wouldnt rule out a shower breaking out just about anywhere, but they are more likely across Northern Areas of scotland, possibly heavy in places it is cloudier here and temperatures will be lower. But elsewhere creeping into the low to mid 20s celsius, 26 celsius possible in south east england. Overnight tonight, any showers we see will fade away to leave us with a dry night, long clear spells, mist, murk, Low Cloud Gathering towards central areas, perhaps into tomorrow morning, but its a mild start to the day on thursday yet again. On thursday morning any mist and murk, low cloud will gradually lift and clear through the morning, burnt back by the sunshine. We draw in more of a south easterly wind, just feeding this warm, humid air our way from the near continent. The highest temperatures perhaps for Western Areas of wales. Those temperatures a little lower towards north sea facing coasts with the onshore breeze. But again, were expecting the mid 20s for many spots. And then on friday, we look out towards the atlantic where we have a deep area of low pressure. It will be pulling in all of these weatherfronts, merging together at times to form longer spells of rain. There will be some heavy thundery downpours, very windy conditions too across Northern Areas of wales, but we do keep that mild, very muggy feeling air, and temperatures pretty much across the board will be in the low 20s in celsius. It stays dry in Northern Scotland until we get to friday night, into saturday, and then that system clears off into scandinavia, so still some rain on saturday morning for Northern Areas of scotland. Elsewhere, though, it should be largely dry, some showers feeding into the west perhaps, as we go through the afternoon. It will feel fresher on saturday, but the air is still warm, temperatures in the low to the mid 20s once more in celsius. Here is the outlook for our capital cities, as we head through the weekend and into next week, dry and warm in the south east, still warm, but more showery in the north and west. This is bbc news. The headlines wild cheering. England make history by reaching the final of the womens world cup after beating australia 3 1. Uk inflation slows to 6. 8 injuly but a further hike in Interest Rates is expected. Aerial photographs of england and world war ii, well find out what makes them so special.
