Down at this harbour, we have been speaking to volunteers. People have flown in from the us mainland who saw the television and they didnt wait, they got on planes and said, we need to help. We have spoken to a team who flew in from louisiana, saying they are going to try and access lahaina. One man said he would go over on a jet ski to assess the needs. Because as you have seen, that area is completely decimated, 80 of it is simply gone. I spoke to him about what he plans to do when he arrives in lahaina. That is the first step to people can then start to process what had happened. We understand more aid is coming in. Theres growing pressure on the uk government to do more to stop migrants crossing the English Channel on small boats after six people drowned off the coast of france. All the time, people are trying to cross the channel in these boats, which are not designed for the purpose, then unfortunately things will go wrong. And politically, that may mean choppy waters ahead. A service has been held to mark the 25th anniversary of the Omagh Bombing the greatest single loss of life during the troubles in Northern Ireland. Families of those who died gathered in omaghs Memorial Garden where the names and ages of the victims were read out. 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, died in the 1998 real ira bombing. No one has ever been convicted of carrying out the attack. One of those speaking at the service was michael gallagher, whose son aidan was among the victims. He paid tribute to the catholic priest, father kevin mullan, who was at the scene of the blast and tended to the victims, but died earlier this year. Earlier this year, sadly, we said goodbye to father kevin mullan. Father kevin was present on the 15th Of August 25 years ago. He attended the victims on the scene, anointing with the last rites and providing comfort to the injured and the dying. We will always be indebted to him for the strength and compassion and courage he demonstrated on the day and the months and years and decades that followed. Kevin was a visionary that seen beyond green and orange. It didnt matter to him if you worshipped in a church or chapel, his wisdom and influence filtered into the community as he worked tirelessly, unselfishly, to create unity and togetherness. We will remember him as a decent and honourable human being. The uk government will argue that is one reason to bring people together and try to work out solutions to joint challenges but we may see more and more of this kind of attempted comparison between the different nations pitting them against each other. Iranian members of parliament have voted to review a controversial hijab law Behind Closed Doors, meaning it is likely there will be no public debate on the issue. The so called hijab and Chastity Bill would impose new punishments on women who fail to wear the headscarf. The bbc� s Azaday Moshiri explains. The timing of the spill is what makes it so significant, because were only a month away from the one Year Anniversary of mahsa aminis death, the Young Kurdish Woman who died in custody of the Morality Police after allegedly violating the countrys strict dress code. Now, that event led to protests across the country and led to a movement that the government struggled to contain. What were seeing now is a push and pull between a government that wants to protect the mandatory hijab and women in iran who are openly defying it, because as youll see here, the streets of iran in places like the capital tehran, dont look like they did a year ago before these protests erupted. Now, the bill itself is called the hijab and Chastity Bill. And what it would do is enforce new punishments and hefty fines on women who violate this law. But what is also concerning is the fact that Irans Parliament has invoked article 85. The timing of the spill is what makes it so significant, that means that a Parliamentary Committee can now review the bill Behind Closed Doors and then ratify it. Now, once its approved by irans powerful guardian council, mps would then vote on whether it would be enforced on a three to five year trial basis, what they call an experimental basis. All of this means that the particulars of a bill that further criminalises the mandatory hijab could go through without any open debate. Now, this isnt the first time or the first few steps that the iranian government has been taking before this anniversary. Theyve made several moves to further enforce the hijab. And one of those moves, you will remember, was bringing back the Morality Police, the same Morality Police that they took off the streets of iran after the death of mahsa amini. Now, we may not see protests on the scale of what we did before, but women are still openly defying the mandatory hijab law, despite a violent crackdown by the Islamic Republic. But actually, ive been thinking for quite a long time, for several years about the connections between swifts music and English Literature and sort of especially during the pandemic. In 2020, when she released folklore and evermore, a lot more attention began to be paid to the increasingly literary quality of her work. And i started thinking about parallels with a number of texts from English Literature, and ijust sort of thought, you know, this is something that we should be discussing. We should be thinking about more. And so the time seemed right to put it into practice, to create a course about it. Ive just got to ask, Whatjob Prospects can you have after this course . Well, this is one one course within an entire Masters Degree in English Literature. So its not the degree itself. But i think one of the things its teaching our students is critical thinking, and thats really important. Its opening up literature to an increasingly large audience, and it teaches students to think and make connections between contemporary culture and older texts that they might not have considered in this light before. And just briefly, so we know shes touring at the moment. Shes got a massive fan base. Just how much interest has there been in the course . Quite a lot. I mean, i cant give you Student Numbers yet because our Enrolment Process goes on until late september. But certainly my inbox has been flooded by students both within belgium, but actually a lot of students from Outside Belgium and non students who have expressed a wish to return to university to take this course.
