Forced to flee at a moments notice had to leave everything behind, to the mercy of the flames. On saturday, hawaiis Attorney General announced an investigation into why the islands Warning Siren did not sound at the height of the emergency. Lets go live to our reporter in maui, helena humphreys. What is the situation right now where you are at the moment . Weill. Where you are at the moment . Well, we have been where you are at the moment . Well, we have been here where you are at the moment . Well, we have been here since where you are at the moment . Well, we have been here since the where you are at the moment . Ii we have been here since the Early Morning at the shelter on maui and as you can see behind me, just more and more cars, forklift trucks, people either coming to help people looking for help. Boxes are being lifted, people bringing water, food, baby supplies, anything that people might need. So that is the situation we are seeing here right now. If you take a look over here, the shelter has been at full capacity now for a number of hours and we are even seeing inflatable mattresses start to spill out onto the grass in front of the structure. It is just overflowing with people sleeping out in the open now as well. And people i have been speaking to from lahaina who have lost everything say they have not been able to find a place at some of the shelters, they are sleeping out with other families evenin sleeping out with other families even in gardens for example because theyjust have lost everything. We also seeing other Services Including behind me that is the American Red Cross triage tent because people are still coming in injured either suffering from smoke inhalation. We have even seen some people with quite severe burns on their feet and legs and hands because they have been telling us that quite simply, they had to run for their lives. Also, most places most poignantly, we have been speaking to people here today at the Missing Persons tent, this has been in coordination with the red cross and also set up by local volunteers. People can fill out a police form looking for loved ones. It is handed to the sheriff and people can scan a qr code to try and get some news of their loved one. But thousands of people remain unaccounted for right now. And of course, that is leading to concerns that we will see the death toll climbs significantly. Currently at at least 80 people who have perished in these fires. Same have perished in these fires. Some very poignant have perished in these fires. Some very poignant scenes have perished in these fires. Some very poignant scenes where have perished in these fires. Some very poignant scenes where you i have perished in these fires. Some very poignant scenes where you are. And of course, people now are also being allowed to return back to their homes or at least potentially what is left of them. What are they finding when they head back into that town of lahaina . The warning from the governor that town of lahaina . The warning from the governor was that town of lahaina . The warning from the governor was to that town of lahaina . The warning from the governor was to brace i from the governor was to brace yourself for a level of devastation that most people will never have seenin that most people will never have seen in their lives. 80 of that town simply raised to the ground. The governor put it best when he said it looks like a bomb went off. People we have spoken to here from lahaina have said they went there and then they left because there is simply nothing left. Since that movement yesterday, we have seen more roadblocks in lahaina, people not necessarily able to get back in. We are not exactly sure why that is at the moment. But of course, lahaina is a town dating dating back to the 18th century with a lot of old structures and there are potentially some concerns about further danger from those old structures. At the same time, we are also seeing more Search And Rescue and recovery teams moving into that area now, including where the Cadavers Sniffer Dogs from the likes of california, washington state, which have had significant experience with wildfires and quite literally, they are going through the rubble now to try and find people. So far, they have only accounted for those who died out in the open, but we dont know what it yet looks like inside those properties which have been decimated. We properties which have been decimated. Properties which have been decimated. , decimated. We can still it is still very active decimated. We can still it is still very active relief decimated. We can still it is still very active Relief Operation decimated. We can still it is still i very active Relief Operation behind you. We also been hearing some reports that the Disaster Alert System that is installed across the islands of hawaii failed to go off in this case. Has there been any criticism in maui about how prepared the area was in the city was for these wildfires . The area was in the city was for these wildfires . ,. , ,. , ~ these wildfires . Everyone we speak to here expresses these wildfires . Everyone we speak to here expresses that these wildfires . Everyone we speak to here expresses that level these wildfires . Everyone we speak to here expresses that level of to here expresses that level of frustration. We asked them how they are and how did they get here, how did they know to leave. They say, we didnt hear the sirens, we didnt receive a text message. One man simply saying, it was the heat that told me and the high winds that it was time to go. Another woman saying it was simply a Neighbour Banging on her door as the sky went red, she scooped up her children and essentially was just left to drive for her life. And that is a story we are hearing for many people now. The Attorney General saying an investigation will be launched. But of course, we know maui hasnt really seen wildfires of this scale, it has had wildfires most recently in 2018 and 2021, but this is a completely different scale. fiur completely different scale. Our re orter completely different scale. Our reporter on completely different scale. Our reporter on the completely different scale. Our reporter on the ground, Helen Humphrey in maui, thank you so much for that. Well, the speed of the Fire Front On Tuesday caught many off guard as we just heard. Our North America correspondent has been meeting with some of the residents who have lost everything. It looks like doomsday, armageddon, basically. Brian captured the destruction of his home town on his mobile phone. Cars, propane or anything with gas, whatever, gas station was going boom, boom, boom. And it sounded like a war zone. Hes one of 23 members of this extended family, all now refugees from lahaina, crammed into the home of a relative. This is what theyve left behind the line of cars burned, as people tried to escape, and the charred remains of businesses and homes. The house, the house that we stayed in is all gone. Nothing left . Nothing. So. It so breaks my heart, because were expecting we go home from work. No more place to stay. Yeah. The family, like thousands of others, are now relying on hand outs of clothes and struggling with the trauma of what they saw that night. Its so fast. You can see the fire jump. Getting closer and closer . Yeah, closer and closer but we cannot do anything, we just stand up and watching. I said, lets go the fire is here forensic teams are continuing with the difficult task of combing the wreckage for human remains. The island of mauis stunning coastline belies the fact that this is now the scene of a major disaster, with the town of lahaina a little way along the coast. They are facing such devastation that the police are working to keep everybody, including the media, at bay, unless you can show proof of residency. And although the mood remains calm, there are also hints of anger. Many say they received no warnings at all. Questions are being asked about whether the authorities could have done more to raise the alarm. Jon sudworth, bbc news, maui. Welcome as we have been hearing, shelters have been busy helping those who have been left homeless by this disaster. Todd james is National Spokesperson for the American Red Cross, whos in honolulu. For us, the main focus of our work continues to be sheltering, working with our partners, the local and State Government and our nonprofit partners in the area, because weve got to make sure that all of these families who have been displaced have a safe place to stay, have access to food, to medical care, as you heard there, to Crisis Counseling and, of course, knowing that theyve got a safe place to go and until they figure out what their next steps are. Weve had thousands of people coming through the shelters. Weve had over 2,900 overnight stays so far, and a lot of folks who are coming into the shelter during the day they can charge their phones, they can get a meal, they can talk to some of the other partners we have in the shelters with us to get information. And if they need to stay, then they know theyre more than welcome to stay with us. So that is our big focus right now. Once its safe and we get the word from officials that we can begin going out, well assist with the Damage Assessment of the area and then well start distributing some of the emergency supplies that families will need when they start the cleaning process. I wouldnt be surprised if there are some difficulties getting hold of some folks. You know, theres a lot of confusion. The infrastructure is down. The communications, electricity, water, all of that is not functioning, or barely working in some areas affected by the fire, so that makes it very tough. So im sure the officials are doing all they can. Its still a Search And Rescue operation, so thats why theyre restricting access, i believe. But whoever needs shelter, if theres still folks out there and they make their way to our shelter, theyre going to find a welcome arm from a red cross volunteer who will get them settled, get them a meal and make sure they have access to everything they need right now. Republican Residential Frontrunner donald trump made an appearance at the Iowa State Fair this weekend. Hundreds greeted him as he moved around grills and visited baby goats at the fair, which is held in the first state to kick of voting in the us president ial primary injanuary to 15. The Georgia Grand Jury is expected to hear evidence next week in an atlantic area case against donald trump and his allies for allegedly interfering in the 2020 election. On saturday, the formerly tenant Governorjeff Duncan and an independentjournalist Governorjeff Duncan and an independent journalist confirmed they have both been asked to testify before the grand jury on tuesday. The District Attorney is thought to be seeking more than a dozen charges against the former president , those would include conspiracy and racketeering. Those charges could happen in the coming days. Willis has been investigating the case for more than 2. 5 years. Trump denies all wrong doing in that case. Lets get more now on all of this, we can bring in a senior contributor at a news website and director at syracuses Institute Forjournalism and citizenship. We heard about the latest updates about the investigation into the 2020 election investigation into the 2020 election in the us states of georgia, what is ewels sense of how this case is unfolding and whether and when donald trump could be charged . Weill. Donald trump could be charged . Well, this has the potential, donald trump could be charged . Ii this has the potential, even though it sounds kind of humdrum, to be really impactfulfor a few it sounds kind of humdrum, to be really impactful for a few reasons. Just based on the timing of the formerly tenant governors sue pina i should say to testify, this looks like it could come as soon as next week. Its important for a number of reasons. One is because it has been said that if former resident trump were to win another term and be convicted at the federal level, he would have the ability to pardon himself. But in the us, that is not true in terms of power over convictions at the state level. So a convictions at the state level. So a conviction in georgia is a different matter hypothetically speaking for a future president. It also really matters in the here and now because the third indictment we have been talking so much about, jack smiths at the federal level, was purposely drawn very narrowly just at the federal level, was purposely drawn very narrowlyjust around donald trump really. Its believed that this case in georgia has the potential to draw in nearly two dozen other people. So you have the potential for leveraged and plea negotiations. And just to see a much broader array of kind of connections around efforts to overturn the election. And finally, it is potentially now fourth indictment. So in terms of size, scope and what it would mean if trump were to run and be nominated and be re elected, its important on all of those levels. ,. , its important on all of those levels. , ~ its important on all of those levels. ~ , ~. ,. , levels. Also this week, we had a secial levels. Also this week, we had a Special Prosecutor levels. Also this week, we had a Special Prosecutor has levels. Also this week, we had a Special Prosecutor has been levels. Also this week, we had a i Special Prosecutor has been named levels. Also this week, we had a Special Prosecutor has been named in the investigation into the current president s son hunter biden. What does that mean in terms of what comes next in that particular case . There had been a plea deal and that seems to have fallen apart completely. Seems to have fallen apart completely seems to have fallen apart completely. Seems to have fallen apart comletel. ,. , completely. Thats right, the plea deal fell apart completely. Thats right, the plea deal fell apart and completely. Thats right, the plea deal fell apart and this completely. Thats right, the plea deal fell apart and this certainly l deal fell apart and this certainly suggests now the case that will be run by now Special Counsel david weiss has the potential to go on much longer, you would not normally appoint a Special Counsel there was nothing more to happen, right . There are potentially new powers this gives. It is not clear because the us has maintained that while he had all the power he needed, but this might give him potentially some leveraged to break cases in the judicial states. Leveraged to break cases in the judicialstates. He leveraged to break cases in the judicial states. He might always have had essentially that power. It is obvious he designed to show and make clear that he has independence, that he is not working for President Biden. But it is interesting because we are seeing immediately that republicans are saying there needs to be a Special Counsel or david weiss should be the Special Counsel, and immediately is say that he shouldnt be the Special Counsel, there should be a different Special Counsel. There is a sub effect of this. It greatly reduces the chances that weiss would ever testify now before some of the republican led committees in the House Of Representatives that are actually investigating hunter biden and President Biden. But it has some real downsides of thejoe biden politically. It real downsides of the joe biden oliticall. ,. , politically. It is a really interesting politically. It is a really interesting time politically. It is a really i interesting time because politically. It is a really interesting time because right politically. It is a really interesting time because right now, there are actually three different Special Counsel is investigating separate cases. You have one investigating the current President Joe Biden and another investigating his son, and of course, there is jack smith investigating donald trump. In terms of this moment, how unprecedented is this for the United States . It unprecedented is this for the United States . ,. , states . It is. I mean, it is unprecedented. States . It is. I mean, it is unprecedented. There states . It is. I mean, it is unprecedented. There are states . It is. I mean, it is. Unprecedented. There are no historians or Democracy Experts or political analysts that i have talked to who think this is a good thing for American Democracy. It is certainly a test for American Democracy and for voters. To really try to understand the differences among these cases, what kind of person they want to nominate from either party to serve as president and what they consider acceptable baselines notjust and what they consider acceptable baselines not just for and what they consider acceptable baselines notjust for candidates baselines not just for candidates but baselines notjust for candidates but for Congressional Committees who are prioritising some of these things over actual issues. But, look at what it certainly means to have notjust at what it certainly means to have not just the stolen at what it certainly means to have notjust the stolen documents case involving biden and now the special cases against bidens son, for republicans, they see this as a gift. It gives them the potential to continue drawing a false equivalency against the charges against former President Trump who is running again and the son of the sitting president who is not a sitting candidate, who doesnt work for the white house. So far, there has been no evidence to urge to suggest President Biden himself has breached any ethical standards or broken any laws or anything like that. But it is certainly not stopping the effort to make that case politically and to use the powers of congress potentially to bring an impeachment effort against the sitting president. That is something that republicans have signalled they are ready to do and in the process of at least laying the groundwork for it. And if all of that is the backdrop to the 2024 election, it is going to give voters who are right now in real life worried about the economy, inflation, health care, climate change, some of these other issues, it is going to put the focus around corruption, charges of corruption or indictments or the criminality of president s. It indictments or the criminality of president s indictments or the criminality of president s. ,. ~. , president s. It is quite the backdrop and of course. President s. It is quite the backdrop and of course, we are also about i president s. Margaret, senior contributor at the news site x yes, thank you for joining us. News site x yes, thank you for joining ne the six migrants who drowned in the English Channel on saturday have been identified as afghans. A french official said more than 60 people were on board the boat which capsized most of them were from afghanistan and some were sudanese. They were all trying to reach the uk. The search for two people who may still be missing has been called off. In the last few minutes, the french coastguard has said the search for migrants missing at sea has been called off. Simonjones reports from dover. The sea has claimed several more lives. The french lifeboat had the grim task of bringing five bodies back to shore, a sixth person airlifted to hospital didnt survive. Some of those rescued were taken to dover, after lifeboats from the uk joined the search operation. Many of the survivors had been in the sea, screaming for help. Others had been trying to bail out their sinking boat using their shoes. Translation they were in trouble. Some were suffering from seasickness and the boats are quite simply overloaded. They overload the boats and so the boats can no longer move forwards. The last boat was too full. These pictures, taken earlier in the week, showed just how many people can be crammed into flimsy boats in the worlds busiest shipping lane. The french Authorities Say they will only intervene at sea if a boat gets into difficulty. This is an absolute tragedy today in the channel, and my thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. What we now really need to see is the french stopping these unseaworthy and overcrowded vessels getting into the channel in the first place, and a joint channel security zone. Charities supporting refugees say they have heard calls for change before. Its tragic, isnt it . Weve been here several times in the last few years and nothing changes. Every time were stood here, loss of life in the channel, i we call for this to be a catalyst for change and it never is. And itsjust, its another needless tragedy. Rescuers say this is the seventh time in the past week that people have had to be pulled from the sea. Its raised concerns that the smugglers organising the crossings are perhaps using a defective batch of boats, boats which are already dangerously overloaded, and that is making the crossing even more perilous. Butjust hours after the deaths were confirmed, more people from other migrant boats were being brought ashore, their desire to reach the uk undiminished. The Home Secretary said her thoughts and prayers were with all those affected by the tragic loss of life. Simonjones, bbc news, dover. Global oil demand hit a record high injune thats according to an estimate by the International Energy agency, which said demand reached an all time high of 103 Million Barrels a day. And the agency suggests demand could reach a fresh peak in the month of august. Heres our business reporter, david waddell. Global oil demand first passed through 100 Million Barrels a day in 2019, but the impact of the covid Pandemic Hit Demand hard. At one point in april 2020, the price of a barrel of brent crude fell to 22. 4. Its much higher now. On friday, the market price closed at 85. 5. A price that buyers are happy to accept on the world markets. June saw an estimated Aggregate Demand of 103 barrels per day. So why is demand so high . I put that question to the independent Energy Analyst cornelia meyer. Well, the Global Economy is doing a little bit better than was anticipated at the beginning of the year. Especially the us is doing a lot better. And even in europe, where some economies arent doing too well, there is still that revenge travel, and tourism from the covid era. People want to travel again and all the planes are full, and we see that across the globe. In fact, the International Energy agency says demand could reach a fresh peak this month, and has pushed up its expectation for the whole of 2023, suggesting demand could reachjust over 102 Million Barrels per day across the whole year. That could push up prices even further. Especially with recent supply cuts by saudi arabia and russia, the worlds second and third biggest oil producers. Of course, theres increasing pressure for all of us to move towards clean energies, and there are more electric vehicles on the roads than ever before. But on the whole, the Global Economy is proving resilient and the population continues to grow rapidly. So despite ongoing environmental concerns, the demand to keep producing and burning oil is here to stay. The iea doesnt expect oil demand to plateau until 2032.
