Hi there. Thank you for being with us. We begin in ukraine, where at least five people have been killed in a Russian Missile attack on residential buildings in the eastern ukrainian town of pokrovsk. Ukraines Interior Minister reported that the strikes also injured at least 31 people. Among the injured are at least 19 police officers, five rescuers, and a child. The head of the Donetsk Region said the strikes damaged a hotel as well as shops and administrative a hotel as well as shops and administrative buildings. Meanwhile, ukraines Intelligence Agency announced that it arrested a woman in connection with an alleged assassination plot against president zelensky. The woman was allegedly preparing a russian air strike in the Mykolaiv Region during mr zelensky s visit to the area. Our ukraine Correspondentjames Waterhouse has the latest. So these are quite interesting allegations from the region. Sources from the Security Forces told us they have arrested a woman who is accused of travelling around the local area, taking pictures of Different Military sites, and sharing them with her russian handlers. These are part of a string of allegations including her trying to get hold of the itinerary of an official visit by president zelensky and trying to share that with moscow, which would therefore help russia launch a major airstrike during president zelensky s visit. That visit that happened without any incident and the woman was arrested shortly afterwards, we are told is being investigated for a number of weeks. Notjust that, there are claims she worked in the local Military Shop at one of ukraines Military Bases in the south. As the countrys poorhouse leader, president zelensky sees Long Distance trips has been part of the job description. It is important to him that he appears on the front line as well as in cities and army bases to try to keep the populations morale high. There have been reports of several attempts on his life, not least i remember early on in the invasion when russias main aim was to topple his administration, to take him out and install a Puppet Official of their own. These allegations are a reminder of the risks he faces every time he travels outside of here have or even when he stays inside of kyiv, frankly kyiv. Russia has not commented on these allegations. Now to niger and some breaking news. A senior american diplomat has met with the coup leaders in the capital niamey, and said she had Frank And Difficult discussions. Victoria nuland, whos the acting deputy secretary of state, said the coup leaders had not agreed to restore the democratic order and did not let her meet the deposed president. She added that nigers coup leaders understood the risks of working with the Russian Mercenary Group wagner, which is active in neighbouring countries. Our reporter chris ewokor has more details on the situation in niger. The Militaryjunta Leaders In Niamey said they are not taking chances. They have alleged of some form of Military Deployment in preparation to invade their country in two Central African areas, but it didnt mention the name. So because of that, flights are diverted, and of course those who are flying even from within niger, there is a kind of disruption. But beyond that, aside from the closure of the airspace, we also have a situation where borders are closed. Although the Junta Leaders have opened their borders to some neighbouring african countries, nigerias border with niger and that of Republic Of Benin remain closed, and majority of their imports come from both nigeria and of course benin republic. This is also hurting businesses and has sparked increase in prices of foodstuffs. Nigeria has also cut electricity, which is also affecting the nigerien households tremendously. Chris ewokor reporting there. Lawyers for donald trump have opposed an attempt to limit what information he can make public about his prosecution on charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, saying it will limit his freedom of speech. Prosecutors asked the judge for an order limiting the disclosure of evidence, saying the former president might use it intimidate witnesses. This, of course, goes back a few days to that request for what is known as a protective order from the prosecution regarding the evidence in this case. This is the so called Discovery Phase of this trial. It happens in every criminal case. Its when the prosecution has to share has to share by law all the information that it has, all the evidence that its collected with the defence, so that, in this case, Donald Trumps side has time to consider the evidence that is going to be presented in court and prepare their defence. Thats whats happening now. But in this case and in others, its not that unusual, but in this particular case the prosecution want the protection order to, as you say, prevent donald trump making public some of this information. It could be transcripts of legal documents, it could be any aspect of evidence, and they want to prevent donald trump going on social media and writing about it. They want to prevent him talking about it in Television Interviews or even making a speech about it at one of his many rallies. Now, whats just happened in the last hour or so, Donald Trumps side have responded to that, saying that this is, in effect, attacking Donald Trumps right to freedom of speech. In a trial about First Amendment rights, they say, the government is seeking to restrict First Amendment rights, and they say that any protection should only apply to the most sensitive of documents. And, of course, this is not the only legal challenge that hes facing. Ajudge dismissing his Defamation Counterclaim against the Writer E Jean Carroll as well. Yes, this goes back a few months. You remember, he was found liable legally liable for sexual assault. Ejean carroll, after this case was over, went on television and, in effect, implied that donald trump was guilty of rape. He counter sued for defamation. And the judge has just thrown out that case, saying that donald trump hadnt proven his argument. Peter bowes reporting there. One of the worlds longest serving leaders, hun sen of cambodia, has handed over power to his son. Hun manet has been appointed Prime Minister by cambodias king. 0ur Southeast Asia correspondent Jonathan Head gave us more details of the new Prime Ministers background. Hun sens eldest son, hun manet, who is 45 years old, is now the new Prime Minister, although he has to go before parliament to have his new government confirmed in the next couple of weeks, but thats a mere formality, as well, because the ruling party, which is very much hun sens own vehicle, completely dominates parliament after an election in which the main opposition was actually banned from contesting it. So the new Prime Minister is a much younger face, a different generation. Little known, really. Hes been very prominent in the cambodian army. Hes western educated, unlike his father, who came up through the crucible of the khmer rouge revolution, a very sort of different background, but not tested in politics. Hes only really been active in politics in the last year 01 so. So nobody knows quite what kind of Prime Minister hes going to be. I think the hope is for hun sen that this is a gradual transition, that it doesnt create any dramatic changes and that his son gets a chance to bed down. Its a difficult thing to do. Hun sen has so dominated the country in these last 38 years. Hes come to almost personalise politics. He sits at the centre of a web of complex alliances with other powerfulfigures, all of whom are ambitious. Hes managed, very skilfully, played one off against the other, bought them off, as well. But cambodias got lots of challenges. It has an economy very dependent on international demand. It has huge inequality, environmental destruction, massive corruption. These are all things that are going to challenge this new and untested man in charge of the country. That was our south asia correspondent. Lets take a look at other stories. In india, Senior LeadersEnter Parliament for the first time after being reinstated as an mp. He won the Best Director Oscar for the 1971 thriller, the French Connection, but he was perhaps most well known for directing the iconic and controversial horrorfilm, the exorcist. The film, about a young girl possessed by the devil, was infamously banned in many countries, but it became one of the most sucessful and influential films of all time. Here he is speaking about the exorcist in 2008. Its realistic. There is no escape from it. It isnt like theres a lot of distance for the audience, like most of the films in the genre today, where you can laugh. I mean, there will be some laughs but they are nervous laughter based on tension. Earlier i spoke to film critic siobhan synnot, she met him a few times and shared her memories. He was very charming and, in fact, he charmed my movie hating editor so much that he persuaded him to put his picture on the front page of my newspaper. Quite an achievement, if you knew my editor. He was as well, of course, one of the highly regarded directors of the 1970s. Up there with spielberg, scorsese, francis ford coppola, and i think his skill was really to treat what other people might have regarded as b movies with the utmost seriousness. So Something Like the French Connection, a cop movie, could have been a potboiler but in his hands it was something far more elevated than that. And he got an amazing performance out of gene hackman, despite the fact gene hackman felt that his character, popeye doyle, was morally reprehensible and had to be pushed by friedkin to give his character its full weight. And the exorcist, you know, he never regarded that as a horror movie, despite the spinning heads and the pea soup. He regarded it as a serious drama, a moral question, and when he felt the energy on set wasnt quite as energetic as he would like, he punched one of the characters, one of his actors in the face. Notjust any old actor either, a priest. Well, incredible stories there. And also at the age of 87 he actually had a new movie coming out . Thats right. He has a version of the caine mutiny, the Caine Mutiny Court martial. That will be seen at the venice film festival, a chance to see one of our great filmmakers for the very last time. Sad news today i think with William Friedkin but, you know, his films will carry onwards. Maybe he did not achieve quite the same potential after the oscar wins for French Connection and the excitement that surrounded the exorcist but, nevertheless, he had something of a comeback with a film Called Killerjoe in 2012, with matthew mcconaughey, and it is always worth seeing a William Friedkin film. I will be back with Business News shortly but for now thank you so much for watching. Hello there. Theres a promise of something a little bit warmerfor all of us towards the end of the week. But its going to be a short lived warm snap, as cooler, Wetter Conditions return for many northern and Western Areas over the weekend. For the next few days, its southern areas which will see the mist, the murk, the cloud, the rain. A bit brighter further north. This deep area of low pressure will bring all sorts of problems to scandinavia, with localised flooding, heavy rain and strong winds. But the Weather Front pushing in across the south of the uk for tuesday will be a much weakeraffair, bringing increasing cloud to the southern half of the country, with some patchy rain and drizzle, low cloud, some sea fog around south Western Coasts and into wales. But for northern england, northern ireland, scotland, bright with some sunny spells, one or two showers in north east scotland, where it will be windier, especially in the Northern Isles gusts up to 50 miles an hour here, with only 12 degrees in lerwick. But for the mainland of the uk, 16 to maybe 20 degrees from north to south. As we move through tuesday night, it looks like the showers, long spells of rain across the south of england clear away and it turns dry with lengthy clear spells. But it will continue to be windy in the north east of scotland, into the Northern Isles. Temperatures in Single Digits across the north. Another chilly night to come here, but milder in the south and west, where it will be a bit more humid, misty and murky. Wednesday, then, not a bad looking day. Quite a bit of sunshine around. Still windy in the north east of scotland and the Northern Isles, but thicker cloud will push into Western Areas at times and there will be some mist and murk around too. But i think most places will stay dry. Increasing sunshine across the east and south east of england. So, here, 2a, maybe 25 degrees and itll feel increasingly humid as well. Towards the end of the week, we start to tap into that warmer air over the near continent, so it will turn drier and sunnier. But it will turn a little bit humid as well. But you can see the red and orange colours spreading their way northwards across the uk. We could be up to the mid 20s in Scotland On Thursday and the high 20s for parts of england and wales. But it will be a short lived warm spell. Low pressure out in the atlantic will send a Weather Front across the uk during friday, which will bring showers or longer spells of rain, particularly to the north and the west of the uk. Some of them may be heavy. And as it moves through, temperatures will drop back down below the seasonal norm once again. So an unsettled theme as we head into friday and the weekend across the north and the west of the uk. Not looking that bad, though, across southern and eastern parts of england.
