Welcome to bbc news now, three hours of fast moving news, interviews and reaction. We start with a Major Political political row here in the uk. The first Asylum Seekers to be housed on a barge off the south coast of england have now begun arriving on board. The governments use of the barge called the Bibby Stockholm Has been controversial. Officials say it will be used to house up to 500 men while they await the outcome of their asylum applications. Campaigners have expressed concern about the conditions on board, but the government insists the vessel is safe and that it will help reduce the cost of placing migrants in hotels. Our correspondent ellie price is in dorset for us. She gave us this update a little earlier. We also understand there are already a number of migrants on board. I cant tell you exactly how many, im afraid. Probably understandably the home office being a bit cagey about numbers. They dont want to be seen to be putting numbers on it, because i think that would imply whether theres been a success or not. Were expecting 50 or so migrants within the next week, up to 500, because, of course, the capacity of that barge i keep pointing at it, you can probablyjust about see. Im going to ask my cameraman to zoom in. The red and grey building in the distance is actually the barge. And the capacity of that barge has been increased. Now, previously, around 220 people could be accommodated in single rooms on that barge. Its been used in the past for oil and gas. Past for oil and gas workers off the coast of scotland. But whats happened this time is the uk government has increased the capacity, its put bunk beds into those single rooms and now it can hold up to just over 500 people. But as i say, were probably expecting 50 within the next week. We dont know exactly how many today. And ellie, what do we know about the conditions on board and what the migrants will be able to do . Are they able to leave, for instance, if theyd like to . They are. Its very much not were told a ship that is for detaining people, the migrants will be free to come and go. It is a working port. You can see probably in the background the Police Officers as well as security staff. So there is some security measures that will be need to be taken. But were told that a bus, for example, will be offered to migrants that can take them into the nearby town of portland and weymouth. So they can come and go. Theres no curfew per se, but were told they will be encouraged to be back on it by about midnight, by about 11 00 uk time. So a sense if you like that, yeah, theres absolutely no detainment on that barge. Worth mentioning, by the way, that previously about ten years or so ago, there was a floating prison in the very same berth. So this port very much used to having People Living on barge type ships, if you like. But no, theyre not confined to the barge. But yeah, this issue of conditions on board, well, reporters were invited round a few weeks ago to have a look. Were told it was clean, it was tidy. Actually, the rooms are relatively spacious. Theyve got en suite facilities, showers, toilets, and there will be tv rooms on board. Theres quiet spaces, places for meetings to take part, access to the internet, that sort of thing. The government saying, look, this is safe and functional, but this isnt luxury. And i think thats part of the message that the government is trying to bring, that theyre doing their bit, if you like, to meet the obligations of international Asylum Seekers. But this isnt about welcoming people with open arms. Because of course, being tough on immigration is very much part of the governments strategy, and particularly being tough on illegal immigration. And the whole point of this barge, say the government, is that it is cheaper than housing migrants as they currently are in hotels. Were told it costs about £6 million a day to house a migrant in hotels around the uk. We havent been given a figure on how much it costs to put them on the barge, but were told it will be cheaper. So theres very much a symbolic moment, if you like, to this today, that if this works and its seen to work, i think we can probably expect more barges across different ports across the uk. Kaweh heshtizadeh is an immigration and asylum solicitor at fadiga and co solicitors. What do you think the government should be focusing on immigration wise instead of barges . I think it is cruel and inhuman and im sorry to see this happening in the uk with a great history of welcoming Asylum Seekers and refugees into the uk. There are three issues with the use of the barge for Asylum Seekers and one safety, whether it would be safe to house nearly 500 people in the vessel which has been designed for only 250 people. The second one is the legal issue, that while it would be legal to keep people in something thatis be legal to keep people in something that is in my view inhumane. fin be legal to keep people in something that is in my view inhumane. Whether it will be safe for the Asylum Seekers are not. We need to remember we are dealing with Vulnerable People from around the world, victims of torture and human trafficking, people have been traumatised and have come a lot to get to the uk and seek protection. When we see these issues, we see they are housed in the barge, this is something that will create a very negative effect on their wellbeing, on their welfare. This is something we need to see. This is the first time its happening in the history of the uk, so we need to see whether it will be safe, whether it will be legal, as the government claims are not. There has also been local opposition, fears not only about Asylum Seekers welfare but worry about pressure on local services as well, but the government fiercely defending what is happening there saying the barge will be better value for british taxpayers than hotel which is currently costing £6 million a day. Now to the womens world cup where england have beaten nigeria on penalties to secure a place in the quarterfinals. This was the moment england sealed the victory in a nail biting penalty shoot out chloe kelly scoring the winning goal for england. In the other last 16 game, australia beat denmark 2 0. The matildas scored a goal in each half. They will face either france or morocco in the quarterfinals. 0ur Correspondentjane Dougall is in brisbane and was following the action. England were given an almighty scare. Questions will be asked as to why they failed to score against a team ranked 36 places below them in the rankings. Yes, they are through and went through on penalties but that was after 120 minutes of goalless action. In sharp contrast, nigeria looked very strong from the start of the match, forcing the england keeper into several saves, evenin england keeper into several saves, even in the first 12 minutes of action. 20 minutes in Alessia Rousseau had a shot on target but the Nigeria Keeper pounced on it, blocking her shot. After half an hour, it looks like rachel daly had a shout for a penalty. She was pushed over in the box but Var Checkedit pushed over in the box but var checked it and the referee went over to look at it on the television and deemed no penalty, much to the annoyance of the england fans who were adamant that it in fact a penalty. In the second has an incredible chance for england where the Nigeria Keeper made a double save. Rachel daly with the header from that corner trying to make up for the Penalty Shout that she wasnt given, but a double save by then the nigerian keeper. Drama came in the 87th minute when the star of the england squad, lauren james, was shown a straight red card. What had happened was she was entangled with one of the nigerian defenders, and it looks as though as she got up, she looked to have stamped on the player and was sent off so england had to play for the whole of extra time and the remainder of normal time with ten players. It means also that james will now miss the quarterfinals and could face a longer suspension if fifa deem it worthy. In the penalties Georgia Stanway missed the first one for england, however nigeria then missed their first two penalties. Ilil nigeria then missed their first two enalties. , ,. , penalties. The mystery around sam kerr and the injury has been a purple point in australia as to whether or not she is actually injured, to what extent. We have had helicopters flying over training for the matildas, so to see her warming up the matildas, so to see her warming up let alone take the pitch was an incredible sight. She had a couple of chances. She is an icon here, so the momentum from that and her taking the field was incredible. It was a very convincing win from the matildas. All scouts taking part in the world jamboree in south korea are to be evacuated from the campsite early because of an incoming typhoon. 11,500 british scouts and volunteers had already pulled out of the 12 day event, blaming high temperatures and insanitary conditions at the camp, and saying it had become a health risk.
