Hello. First to niger, where, in the last hour, a deadline for the militaryjunta to step down has passed. The leaders of nigers coup have hours to restore the ousted president , or face the possibility of military action. Thousands of people gathered in nigers capital to support the militaryjunta as that deadline expired. Despite International Condemnation of the soldiers actions, thousands of nigeriens continue to show support for the army hoping it can offer the country stability. Some neighbouring countries including mali, burkina faso and guinea have voiced support for the coup leaders. And algeria , which Borders Niger to the north, has said it is categorically against armed intervention. France says it will support efforts by ecowas to restore nigers elected president. Niger s Prime Minister was in paris on saturday meeting lawmakers and greeting protestors outside the countrys embassy. He has dismissed pro coup protests taking place in his country. Marie roger biloa is a west African Affairs analyst. She says its obvious the Military Junta are not going to back down, despite the deadline passing. The time is up and we see that that the junta dont want to back down. There is a new Chapter Opening for ecowas. Still, what we see is the determination has not diminished among African Leaders, except of course in other countries like mali or burkina faso who did a coalition immediately with niger. That is not so important militarily because they are weak. We would know if they were in a position to solve any Security Problem in the country. What we see is that many voices raised to caution against a military approach. A lot of Western Nations will be keeping a key eye on events, now that deadline in niger has passed. Our reporter Nicky Schiller has been looking at why. Why is niger so important . First of all, geographically it is the largest country in west africa. It is also part of a key strip of land known as the sahel which runs from the red sea through to the atlantic ocean. Secondly, politically. Until recently it was seen as relative democratic stability, especially as its neighbours mali and burkina faso had had military coups. While president Mohamed Bazoum is seen as a key partner of some European Countries who have been trying to stop migrants from getting across the mediterranean sea. He has also cracked down on human trafficking. Next, strategically. Niger hosts both us and French Military bases. And was seen as a key partner in the fight against islamist militants. Indeed, the Us State Department said it was important as a linchpin for stability in the sahel. Adding that it was a reliable counterterrorism partner in the fight against those insurgents linked to Islamic State and also alqaeda. As well as the insurgents, the wagner mercenaries have also been seen as having a malign influence in niger. You may have seen these pictures during recent protests by supporters of the coup, they were Holding Russian flags as well as flying the flag of niger. Economically, the country is rich in uranium, indeed, it is one of the worlds biggest producers. It provides around 5 of Global Uranium supplies. The radioactive metal is so important that one of the main roads in the capital is named after it. But it is also worth remembering that the people of niger consistently rank among the poorest in terms of Living Standards anywhere in the world. At least 30 passengers have been killed after an express train derailed in southern pakistan. The Hazara Express came off the rails near nawab shah in sindh province, as it travelled from karachi to abbottabad. Its not immediately clear what caused the derailment. Andrew malkinson a victim of one of the uks worst Miscarriages Ofjustice Has welcomed a decision to scrap rules which require people wrongfully convicted to pay costs towards their time in prison from any compensation they receive. Mr malkinson who served 17 years injailfor a rape he didnt commit said the rules amounted to asking people to hand over cash for their own torture. Sarah campbell has the story. As if being wrongfully imprisoned wasnt bad enough. Andrew malkinson could have ended up being docked Compensation Money to pay for the cause of his food and accommodation while injail. I thought, to pay these people for doing what doing to me is the most sickening, abhorrent, repugnant thing i could imagine. The guilty dont pay, why should the innocent . That is ridiculous. There has been a real problem. Sentiment shared by many, including the mp sir Robert Newell who has welcomed the scrapping of the rule. When the state makes an error it is right and proper at the state accept that as swiftly as possible and, secondly, that the state then doesnt try and put need this obstacles in the way of somebody seeking recompense. And obstacles remain according to Andrew Malkinson and his legal team. He has proved his. Conviction is unsafe. This says he has to go through a whole other process, a second time proving Beyond A Reasonable Doubt that he is innocent and that is. Is wicked. Andrew malkinson is 57 years old and is living on benefits. No more stress, no more concerns about bills and trying to survive and having enough to eat. Just to be liberated in its fullest sense so i can take as much as enjoyment from what is left of life as i possibly can, and i think that is the least they owe me. The very least. The fight to clear his name may be over but the struggle continues sarah campbell, bbc news. Donald trump says he will be asking thejudge in his Election Fraud case to step aside, claiming that he would not get a fair trial unless she does. The former president took to his social media platform, truth social, to attack the lead prosecutor, thejudge, tania chutkan, and the department ofjustice, which he described as highly partisan and very corrupt. Live now to washington where we can speak to correspondent sean dilley for more on this. Sean, what does donald trump have against Thejudge Hearing his case . I think its fair to say that donald trump has questions of the ledgers of a of the cases, Notjust Trump has questions of the ledgers of a of the cases, not just the judges. The latest issue beyond previous statements the judge has made about january six attackers, is that she turned on a defence application to delay the Response Time that the defence had. The prosecution has said we would like to restrict what donald trump is. A about the case once we disclose evidence. That is something a defence we look at, this is the monday deadline sent is not enough and they would like to have the opportunity to meet the prosecution to sort it out without intervention. The head prosecutor said they are ready to send it on the e mail with helping the two sides deciding what would be likely. The nostrums prosecution said he is not deleting the evidence. Jrvm nurse has spoken on a variety of networks this morning and is labouring up, setting up their defensive strategy which is going to be around free speech. He said this morning that donald trump is aspirational in asking of others to do things. He said the First Amendment right to free speech protects donald trump in the same way it does any us citizen to lobby anybody, including State Legislatures or former Vice President mike pence. This case is going to revolve around what donald trump said ended in a two months after the election results, and crucially what she was entitled to say and do. His Defence Lawyer said the prosecution is not going to be able to produce prove with an reasonable doubt that donald trump did not believe he won the 20 20 election because he also told us audiences that donald trump believed in his heart of hearts that he was the winner. In his heart of hearts that he was the winner in his heart of hearts that he was the winner. ~. ,. , ~. , the winner. While he has taken aim at the judge the winner. While he has taken aim at the judge for his case, he has i at the judge for his case, he has also argued he should not be tried in washington. Tell us about that. He argued about that all along. 0ne he argued about that all along. One of the rights people have if they are in trial in the states is to argue that the communities not able to give a fair trial. In donald trump case it is interesting because if you look historical cases of this, is often where a Small Community is involved in something that has local residents and everyone in the area knows a bit about the topic or one of the parties involved. Everyone knows who donald trump is whether they like or live with him. He suggests that washington, dc is so stacked up against him. Ill be slightly cynical and care if you forgive me on this point, whatever he does or doesnt think about it, it can certainly be that lawyers are looking notjust to the trial itself but where there will be grounds for any appeal. At the moment, he is of course presumed innocent. Any appeal. At the moment, he is of course presumed innocent. Thank you sean dilley. Course presumed innocent. Today marks six months since a huge Earthquake Hit Turkey and syria, killing over 50,000 people and leaving many more homeless. But amidst the tragedy there were stories of hope, such as baby afraa who was born beneath the rubble of her collapsed home before being rescued. The bbc has caught up with her and herfamily. Hanan razek reports. It was seen as a miracle, a moment of hope. Following februarys devastating earthquake in syria and turkey. Baby afraa was rescued after being born beneath the rubble of a building. All of her close family were killed. But now afraa has a new life. Adopted by her uncle, the man who pulled herfrom the rubble. Translation i started to dig with my hands. And i heard a voice, so i carried on. I thank god that afraa came to my hands. She was still attached to her mother by the Umbilical Cord when i found her. The video of her rescue went viral around the world. The attention was intense and offers to adopt her flooded in. Her relatives were worried about her safety, even in hospital. After a dna test proved the family were related, they were able to leave with her. Khalil s home was destroyed so for two months they moved to this camp with their seven children. Thanks to help from well wishers they have been able to rent this house but they say it is very expensive and they dont know how much longer they will be able to stay here. Translation i lost everything, it | was like going back to square one. I cant even afford to send my kids to school but there are people in the worst conditions. The road ahead might be difficult but the family are grateful for the chance for a new start. Following a disaster which killed 4000 people in North West Syria alone. Hanan razek, bbc news here in the uk the plan to house Asylum Seekers on a boat is moving ahead. The immigration minister, robertjenrick, says the first group of Asylum Seekers will be moved to the bibby stockholm barge, in dorset, in the coming days. Social Media Companies are also set to crack down on posts by People Smugglers that encourage Asylum Seekers to cross the english channel. Platforms like facebook and tiktok will work with the National Crime agency to take down messages that lure people into paying gangs to make the dangerous voyage in small boats. Earlier i spoke to our political correspondentjonathan blake and started by asking him how the social media crackdown on People Smugglers would work. Its been described as a voluntary partnership between the government and the big social media firms, so x, formerly known as twitter, meta that owns facebook and instagram, and tiktok as well. And the idea being that they will work alongside the National Crime agency to not only find and remove posts which are in some cases offering special offers, discounts or fake documents for people to cross the channel in small boats, but also discourage people and guide them away from that sort of material, presenting it as perhaps disinformation or inappropriate in the way that certain content around extremism, for example, or eating disorders is also managed. Some of this work is already going on, and it seems its just an effort, really, by the government to get these companies on board and redouble their efforts alongside those at the National Crime agency and the home office and elsewhere to attempt to target posts on social media, which are one big way in which people are finding themselves smuggled across the channel, in a trade which the Prime Minister, rishi sunak, has described as vile and is, of course, the scourge of ministers who have vowed to crack down on it. And indeed its one of the Prime Ministers five priorities to stop the boats, as he puts it, but large numbers of people continue to come to the uk illegally in that way. To ukraine next. Workers have completed installing the countrys trident emblem onto the Giant Motherland Monument towering over kyiv. Gazing sternly east from the west bank of the dnipro, the figure holds a i6 metre sword in her right hand and an eight metre long shield in her left. The communist hammer and sickle was removed from the shield last week, now replaced by a trident. Since russias full scale invasion, the campaign to purge ukraine of soviet and russian symbols has been accelerated. The defending champions at the womens football world cup, the United States, have crashed out of the tournament. They lost to Sweden On Penalities in melbourne. The last 16 match had finished without a score in regular and extra time, but ended five four after the shootout. Meanwhile, the netherlands booked their place in the quarter finals with a 2 0 win over south africa in sydney. They set up a quarterfinal with spain who also made it through to the final 16 after thrashing switzerland 5 1. Japan have also qualified beating norway three one. As you can see , much to the delight of fans who travelled to new zealand to watch the game. Our correspondent Shaimaa Khalil describes the usa being knocked out as one of the most surprising of the world cup so far. The reigning champions who were going for a record Third World Cup are now out of the world cup. The United States could not get into the quarterfinals, they were knocked out by sweden. I dont think you can over play the enormity of this moment for the United States team and for their fans. This is a team that has dominated the game internationally for years, it has produced legends some of whom were playing today on the pitch. Today they were their fearsome selves, they played aggressively they pressed, but they could not score. Swedens defence and their goalkeeper who was the woman of the match did not allow them to score. It came down to penalties, and what a Penalty Shoot Out that was. Sweden won by the narrowest of margins by the end. Megan rapinoe, who says goodbye to world football, missed a penalty and what a note to go out on. Definitely hurts. There will be many questions about their performance in this tournament, why they didnt gel and play as a unit. The future of their coach. But i think right now the United States team and millions of fans whove been watching here and across the world will have to sit with the fact that the reigning champions, the defending champions, are now out of the world cup. This tournament has been described as the world cup of surprises, of firsts, of unpredictability. For us fans this has ended with the worst of surprises for them. Earlier i spoke to katie whyatt womens Football Correspondent for the athletic about the United States exit from the world cup. It feels like the most significant result of the tournament in terms of who will go on and win the whole thing. We have seen a huge shock results, with nigeria beating australia in the group stages. Colombia beating germany, teams that have vastly inferior resources compared to teams that have been dominating the womens game for years. This us result, yes they were a team was made up of veterans and half the next generation coming through but ones that had to set their sights on getting their next world cup and doing what no other team has done before. It is unprecedented for them to exit in this way, even the manner in which they exited, players like Megan Rapinoe who defined the game, missing penalties. It was a night that was very telling how far they have fallen and how much the rest of the world has caught up. We are learning to expect the unexpected. Looking forward, england meet nigeria on monday, what are their chances at this stage . It was interesting that Sarina Weigman emphasised that they dont want to be complacent against nigeria. England have a boost with keira walsh back in midfield, they have options in formations, nigeria are a team that like many others have issues with the federation and payday coach, he wasnt allowed to take his assistants. Our people have talked of Coaching Courses that he has led and he was praised for his tactical contribution and knowledge of the game. They have a barcelona forward capable of causing problems. For england, it feels suddenly like this tournament has opened up for them. There is an obvious route to that last 16, we have lost some of the teams who were favourites like germany and the us, many of the other ones that were marked as potentials for causing upset havent shown up. It seems more likely for england, a team that we thought may not get past the quarterfinals due to their own injuries, they have to overcome nigeria but after that the threats are sweden or spain. Hello there. There have been some hefty showers around today, but on the whole it has been a drier, brighter and calmer day than yesterday was, because storm antoni, this swirl of cloud here, has been easing the way eastwards. Clearer skies following on behind, albeit with a speckling of shower cloud. Most of those showers fading as we go through the evening and the night. Some will continue across parts of scotland, maybe coastal parts of Northern Ireland and north west england, but otherwise dry with clear skies, the odd mist patch, and actually quite a chilly night for the time of year, 6 degrees in aberdeen, 9 in birmingham and cardiff in some spots in the countryside will get a little chillier than that. So, a fresh start to monday morning, but under this ridge of high pressure, a largely dry and bright start, some spells of sunshine around. We will see some showers popping up through the day, but they shouldnt be quite as many as there have been today. But this Weather System Running in from the west will eventually bring more cloud into far South West Of England and the far south west of wales, misty murky conditions developing and some rain very late in the day. Temperatures 16 21 in most places. Through monday night this Frontal System pushes eastwards, taking cloud and some rain with it, not a huge amount of rain but there certainly will be submitted into murky conditions for coasts and hills, whereas for Northern Ireland and scotland, mainly dry, fine and sunny, albeit with cooler breeze in scotland, 13 for lerwick and even further south, 19 or 20. As we move into wednesday, some increasingly humid air spreading from the west that will give rise to some sea fog, some fog over the hills as well, some areas of cloud, sunny spells, but temperatures beginning to climb, and that process will continue into thursday. High pressure will be to the east of us, low pressure trying to come in from the west, and that will bring us a flow of wind from the south, bringing some warmer air across oui shores. You can see the orange colours spreading across the Temperature Chart for thursday. Quite widely we will be in the middle 20s celsius, some places could get to 27 or 28. But it may not last that long, we will see more unsettled and cooler weather returning as we head towards the weekend. Going round this is bbc news. The headlines the deadline for the militaryjunta in niger to hand power back to the countrys president passes, as thousands gather to support the coup leaders. West African Leaders had threatened militatry action if the junta refused to step down. At least 30 people are dead after an express train derailed in southern pakistan.
