Hello, im lewis vaughanjones. Welcome to the programme. First this hour a deadline set by the west African Regional bloc ecowas for the militaryjunta to reinstate nigers ousted president Mohammed Bazoum expires later on sunday. Ecowas gave the coup leaders a week to restore the president or potentially face Military Action. Meanwhile, france says it will support efforts by ecowas. Nigers Prime Minister has been in paris saturday, meeting lawmakers and greeting protestors outside the niger embassy. He has dismissed pro coup protests taking place in his country. With the deadline only hours away, our correspondent chris ewokor reports from sokoto, North Western nigeria, close to the border with niger. They are bracing for the worst. Many of them were born here in nigeria but they have never been cut off from their roots in niger. The coup has caught them unawares. With the border is closed and the current political crisis, they are now separated from their families. This man lives here but one of his wives and some of his children over the border. He has been unable to reach her for days. Iam here i am here in one of the community is predominantly inhabited by people from niger. For the past days, since the coup, there has been anxiety among the residents and it has been heightened as the fear that any Military Intervention by ecowas in the country will significantly affect their Family Members or even jeopardise their own safety here in nigeria. These men are worried that the use of force to restore the president could be catastrophic. This womans youngest son lives in south Western Niger and she fears for his safety. As she waits, so does the world for the coup leaders, there has been no sign that they will listen to regional and International Calls to back down and reinstate president Mohammed Bazoum but they say any Military Intervention risks further stabilising because the sahail region, already plagued byjihadist insurgencies. Sahel. Chris ewokor, bbc news. Here in the uk, people who were wrongly convicted of crimes will no longer be charged living costs for the time they spent in prison. The Ministry Forjustice is scrapping the rule with immediate effect following an outcry over the case of a man who spent 17 years injailfor a crime he didnt commit. Joe inwood has the details. There are many shocking things about the case of Andy Malkinson. Ajury misled. Dna evidence suppressed. 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. But for many, it was the revelation that Andy Malkinson would have to pay back some of his compensation to cover board and lodgings that was most shocking. The very idea that was most shocking. Cheering and applause when Andy Malkinson left the court of appeal, his name was finally cleared. His fight for justice has been a long and difficult one, even with todays announcement it is not yet over. Joe inwood, bbc news. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky says a russian guided air bomb has hit a Blood Transfusion Centre in North Eastern ukraine, killing and injuring people. He says rescuers are at the scene in the town of kupiansk, saying there are, quote, dead and wounded. The reported strike has happened shortly after ukraine says missiles hit a facility which manufactures engines for air planes and helicopters in the countrys west. Heres our ukraine correspondent james waterhouse. President zelensky gives updates like this every evening and he claims tonight that a Blood Transfusion Centre has been hit by a russian guided missile in the kharkiv region. There are unconfirmed reports that it was close to a village that was near to the front line. And there is a reality here, whether youre talking about cities like zaporizhzhia or villages in the kharkiv region, even when Russian Forces retreated from there late last year, if you live close to the russian border or if you are close to the front line, you are typically in range of missiles and Artillery Fire and it is a daily occurrence where strikes like these take place. Now, if there is accuracy to president zelensky s claim, it appears once again a medical building has come in harms way. We have seen it before with a Maternity Hospital in the besieged city of mariupol last year, we saw it with a Mental Health hospital in dnipro that was just a few months ago. This is a war that is synonymous with civilian areas, with cities being directly targeted. Now, in president zelensky s tweet, he says that this war crime says everything about russian aggression. He says defeating terrorists is a matter of honour for everyone who values life. Now, this is typical rhetoric you get from president zelensky as he tries to boost his countrys morale under this sustained kind of attack. We are told that there are dead and wounded, but we dont know anything outside of zelensky s tweet. Lets cross live now to colonel brendan kearney, former chief of staff for the Us Marine Corps forces in europe. Thank you for coming on the programme. A, thank you for coming on the programme thank you for coming on the programme. A pleasure to be with you programme. A pleasure to be with you. And programme. A pleasure to be with you. And we programme. A pleasure to be with you. And we start programme. A pleasure to be with you. And we start by with you. And we start by spending with you. And we start by spending a with you. And we start by spending a few with you. And we start by spending a few minutes l with you. And we start by. Spending a few minutes on russias strategy as you see it. We have this claim by president zelensky of this facility being hit. We have a number, though, recently to go on. What do you get a sense thatis on. What do you get a sense that is russias strategy overall here . Well, its hard to define their strategy. They are very much in a reactive mode and i see this continuation, and sadly, its been going on now for well over a year where they are targeting these medical centres, schools, places that are full of Non Combatants and according to the International Law and the law of war, those the places you target so im not sure what britain has up his sleeve here in terms of what he thinks he is going to accomplish putin. Sadly, ithink is going to accomplish putin. Sadly, i think all it does is embolden the resolve of the ukrainian people. find does is embolden the resolve of the ukrainian people. The ukrainian people. And good for them. This the ukrainian people. And good for them. This is the ukrainian people. And good for them. This is an the ukrainian people. And good for them. This is an awful for them. This is an awful human being that is waging a war on the innocence but i think the world has just got to be appalled with. Think the world has ust got to be appalled with. Innocents. Lets switch be appalled with. Innocents. Lets switch to be appalled with. Innocents. Lets switch to the be appalled with. Innocents. Lets switch to the ukrainians. Lets switch to the ukrainians then. What do you make of the counteroffensive so far . You know, counteroffensive so far . You know. Im counteroffensive so far . You know, im actually, counteroffensive so far . You know, im actually, this counteroffensive so far . Ym. Know, im actually, this may surprise you a little bit, im actually not surprised that it is moving slowly. We have to remember that from October November of last year, up until the thought thaw that occurs in april and may of ukraine, russians were essentially reinforcing their defensive positions. I would speculate i cant prove this but i would speculate the minefields that separate the Russian Forces and the Ukrainian Forces are probably the densest minefields on earth right now. So the ukrainians have to get through that and it requires an engineering effort, a breaching effort, as we would describe it in the west, to get through, and im not surprised it would go slow. Directly rememberjune six, 1944, the allies did not get out of normandy for a number of weeks. It was well into august. And thats with overwhelming air superiority, and either the ukrainians nor russians have that under this current situation. Current situation. Talk about air power current situation. Talk about air power. The current situation. Talk about air power. The ukrainians i air power. The ukrainians decided they were not going to wait for this superiority in the air before they launched the air before they launched the counteroffensive. Weve long listened to zelensky to the world and ask for it, pilots are in training. What do you make of where we are with Ukrainian Air power . You make of where we are with Ukrainian Air power . Again, im not surprised. Ukrainian air power . Again, im not surprised. I Ukrainian Air power . Again, im not surprised. Ithink Ukrainian Air power . Again, im not surprised. I think the not surprised. I think the Training Pipeline for pilots, especially experienced pilots, is going to be shorter than what everyone has said it is going to be. Those ukrainian pilots that are in the western pipeline right now are probably doing very, very well and advancing very, very quickly but the thing is, the ukrainians had held off, say they had said ok, lets not launch our counteroffensive as everyone is expecting in late june or earlyjuly or august, well, what you start to run up against is Mother Nature. And thats what they are having to deal with. We are looking right now at superb weather and it will continue through the remainder of august and september but once you start to get into 0ctober, you start to play a dance with Mother Nature in terms of winter start coming in . And even then, those pilots might be able to fly in new aircraft but what other Ground Forces going to do . They will be caught up in mud and mud has no favourites and its just going to hold up everything thats going on in terms of the advance. Colonel brendan kearney. Thank you so much for coming on the programme. Thank you so much for coming on the programme these latest developments comes as talks took place in saudi arabia aimed at finding a solution to the war in ukraine. Senior officials from some 40 countries, including the us, china and india held talks to try to find a peaceful settlement. It comes a few months after the gulf country hosted president zelensky at a summit of the arab league. The ukrainian delegations leader admits this weekends discussions wont be easy. More than 50 supporters of the former pakistani Prime Minister imran khan have been detained around the country for protesting against his three Year Prison Sentence for corruption. Arrests were made in cities including peshawar, lahore and karachi, but the demonstrations were more muted than the massive unrest that broke out after mr khans previous detention in may. Mr khan was found guilty of not declaring money earned from selling gifts he received while in office. This verdict means he is not allowed to hold Public Office for five years with pakistan just months away from a general election. 0ur correspondent Caroline Davies reports. Sirens blaring, police truck after police truck, arresting former Prime Minister imran khan. The judgement came from here. Police filled every corner in islamabads session court. Mr khan says that the case is politically motivated. The court said hes dishonest. So, this is after months and months of waiting, we now finally have an announcement imran khan has been found guilty and has been sentenced to three years imprisonment. 0utside court, shouts of your show is over, khan minutes later, we heard hed been arrested. This was what happened the last time mr khan was arrested protests, some violent. Mr khan was released but his party faced a dramatic crackdown. Many of his senior Party Leadership were arrested, then announced that theyd left the party. Police picked up thousands of his supporters. Will the protests happen again . Imran khans Team Released this pre recorded video after hed been arrested today. Translation | want| to make one request you should not sit quietly at home. All my struggle is notjust for myself it is for you, for the future of your kids. If you do not stand up for your rights, you will live like a slave. Chanting 0utside his house, there were a small number chanting, waving flags, then quickly taken away. Its been a matter of months but the atmosphere in pakistan has changed. This decision will mean mr Khan Cannot Run in the upcoming elections. Its pretty useful for your party, though, that your main political opponent has just been disqualified in the run up for a general election. Well, you have to be accountable for your deeds in law. This is nothing to do with politics. A person whos been Proven Guilty by the court has to be arrested. His lawyers intend to appeal the decision but, for now, mr khan is held by police and his politicalfuture is deeply uncertain. Now, a remarkable story about two orphans rescued from russian occupied territories of ukraine. 15 year old maksym and 16 year old ilona have recently lost their father and instead of staying in their home village, they decided to flee. Details of their Rescue Operation are still kept secret but the children shared their story when they were settling in in kyiv. Oksana kundirenko reports. This brother and sister can hardly believe it is ok to just stop and play. Translation there was no ping pong during occupation. Children dont even play football in the stadiums. Ilona and maksym are orphans who spent over a year in hiding under russian occupation. Their mum died years ago and ailing father had kept them in the house since the russians came to their village in southern ukraine. Translation i wasnt studying. I havent finished school. I dont have any documents, so im considered a dummy. I guess. I couldnt go anywhere because my dad was worried. He said the russians could rape me or kill me. There have been such cases. When their father eventually died, ilona and maksym were worried that they would be forced to move to russia, given russian passports, and sent to orphanage or adopted, so they decided to flee. A Daring Escape was organised by volunteers who helped the Children First to go to russia itself, then to belarus and eventually to ukraine. Translation we were crossing the border, when i saw a sign reading ukraine. I started to cry. Since the war began, i wanted ukrainian soldiers to come and save us. They are finally free and safe relatively. And theres plenty more updates from ukraine on our website, of course. To keep up to date there and with the bbc news up and if you are online, you can get me on social media. Im lewis vaughanjones. This is bbc news. Goodbye. Hello. After saturdays weather, ill tell you straight away that the outlook is looking significantly better for many parts of the uk over the coming days even sunday will bring a delightful start to the day with some sunshine. Now, storm antoni swept across southern parts of the uk but affected mostly the south west in terms of the severe gales. Its still clipping early in the morning, east anglia and the southeast, so more of a breeze here, perhaps a few showers through the early hours and maybe through the morning into the afternoon but for the vast majority of us, its a quiet start to the day. These are the temperatures around 8 oclock in the morning a little fresh out there. Ten in the lowlands of scotland, 12 or 13 in the south. So, through the morning and the afternoon, a bit of a breeze there on that lincolnshire coastline and into the southeast and east anglia. Showers will develop through the course of the morning into the afternoon but many of us should miss the showers and, actually, compared to what weve had, its not going to be bad at all. Temperatures still a little low around 16 18 degrees, maybe 20 or 21 in the south east but the good news is that sunday evening is looking fine and it should be a calm end to the weekend. How about monday . Well, High Pressure is trying to push in that weather, its trying to settle down, but this little area of low pressure is also sneaking in at the same time. Now, this isnt Gale Force Winds but it is a fair amount of cloud and perhaps some rain reaching south Western Parts of the country. I dont think its going to be particularly heavy and, actually, for many of us, mondays looking absolutely fine across scotland, all through Northern England and into central parts of britain as well sunny spells and just a few showers. Now, lets take a look at that jet stream because its all about the jet stream, isnt it . Its sort of meandering across the atlantic, pushing the weather systems. But look what happens through the middle to end of the week it sort of diverts to the north and it opens up the doors to warmer air. A little more settled weather coming in from the south. Now, were not expecting anything particularly extreme in terms of the temperatures but they are going to rise, perhaps mid or high 20s. Doesnt always mean itll be sunny but at least better compared to what weve had. Bye bye. This is bbc news, the headlines. Decision time for niger, as a deadline given by west African Leaders for the military to reinstate the countrys ousted president is due to expire later today. They have warned that the country may face Military Action if the deadline isnt met. In the uk, people who are wronglyjailed will no longer have their living costs taken out of their compensation
