France has said it will firmly support efforts by the west African Regional grouping ecowas to make the Military Coup in nigerfail. The announcement was made by the French Foreign minister catherine colonna, after her meeting with nigers Prime Minister and the niger ambassador. Earlier, countries from ecowas announced a plan for possible Military Intervention in niger, if the Military Leaders who seized power there do not restore the countrys president before the deadline this sunday. Lets now go live to lagos to speak to Adebayo Olowoake director of the african Resource Development centre. Thank you for being with us. That is| actually a question which is open. Ecowas has been very specific in saying that it will not allow them to stay in power beyond tomorrow. If they do not return the president to power. There is some apprehension, especially from nigeria, that this could result in a Military Intervention, the use of force. So far the military here has announced that it would only deploy on the instruction of the authority of Heads Of State and that has not happened. But of course there is apprehension because the deadline is just about 2a hours away. Apprehension because the deadline is just about 24 hours away. Just about 24 hours away. France has said it firmly just about 24 hours away. France has said it firmly supports those said it firmly supports those efforts. They are a close ally of the deposed president. Tell us more about their involvement and how significant that could be. I actually think that the public declaration by france to Support Ecowas could be counter productive because at the moment, whether in francophile west africa or otherwise, france is not popular. The narrative of the jointer has been that they are fighting french and neocolonialism and they have also had that narrative reinforced ity also had that narrative reinforced by fellow crews in burkina faso. These three states have been very active on the social media, appealing to Young Africans and the general feeling appealing to Young Africans and the generalfeeling is appealing to Young Africans and the general feeling is that if france were to say what they have just said now, that they will Support Ecowas, it could create a Credibility Problem for ecowas which might be seen as an instrument in the hands of france to further french imperialist agenda. But what it does prove is that they are taking a hardline position and that makes a Military Confrontation more likely. England have made history by reaching their first Netball World Cup final, after an extremely tight contest against the defending champions new zealand. The match was level after the first three quarters the two sides hard to seperate in cape town. But it was england who pulled ahead in the final moments, the game finishing a6 a0. The roses will face eitherjamaica or australia in sundays final. Its served us so well to be consistent. I dont mean boring consistent, i mean consistent bringing the fun and the character of the team as well as the studious nature we have got. Im hoping everyone is proud. We have already gone where no other team has gone before. There will be no Rail Services in or out of brighton today as the city hosts its annual pride festival. The Rail Company Gtr which runs thameslink and Southern Services has cancelled all trains, saying it would be unable to cope with the high numbers of passengers expected, because of an overtime ban by drivers with the union aslef. The event normally attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. Travel disruption will be worsened by Climate Change unless more money is spent on the uks transport networks, a Government Adviser has warned. Intense rainfall and heatwaves have hit road and rail travel with flash floods, landslips and equipment failures. The chair of the National Infrastructure commission, sirjohn armitt, said the uk must either accept more travel disruption, or spend more money on maintenance and upgrades. Network rail said companies were racing to catch up. Lets turn to weather events in the uk where the met office is warning of potential road closures, power cuts and flying debris as storm antoni batters wales and south west england. Amber alerts are in place for high winds and heavy rain is also expected in northern ireland. So, storm antoni is the first met office named storm of the year to hit the uk. But what is causing these unseasonably strong winds. Ben rich is in the bbc Weather Centre with more. The uks recent spell of wet and cool Summer Weather has come thanks to the jet stream. The winds high up in the atmosphere. Thejet stream has been to the south of us, bringing Weather Systems our way, and that is exactly what has happened this weekend. The jet stream has spun up an unusually deep area of low pressure for the time of year. This storm named storm antoni by the met office because of the potential for disruption, particularly on the western flank of this low, as it continues to journey eastwards, you can see the white line squeezing together. Thats where weve got the strongest of the winds through the rest of the day. A met Office Amber Warning across parts of South West Wales and south west england, gusts of 60 Miles Per Hour or more. Quite unusual at this time of year, hence the risk for disruption. But the wind is much lighter, youll notice, further east and particularly further north. Some heavy rain in the outlook as well and feeling really cool out there. So what prospects for something drier, brighter and warmer . Well, actually, as we head through the coming week, the jet stream is expected to shift northwards, and that should take the Weather Systems away to the north, at least for a time. It will also bring this wedge of warmer air through the middle part of the week. Towards the end of the week, it looks like temperatures will be a little bit higher, maybe up to the mid to possibly high 20 celsius in places. But it looks like that might not last too long, with more Showery Rain Returning by the very end of the week. Now lets return to our top story the conflict in ukraine. Its been 2 months since Ukrainian Forces launched their long awaited Counter Offensive aimed at pushing the invading Russian Forces out of the areas they ve seized. The uk, the us and other western nations have invested heavily in these efforts donating billions of pounds of military equipment, and training soldiers. So, two months on, how is ukraine coping against formidable russian defences . The bbc s security correspondent Frank Gardner has teamed up with bbc verify to assess what progress is being made. This is what the map looks like 18 months on after the full scale russian invasion last year. If it looks familiar, that is because it is. It hasnt changed that much since last november with the russian occupied areas shaded in red. In orderfor ukraines occupied areas shaded in red. In order for ukraines counteroffensive to succeed it needs to cut the russian area into. Earlier this summer in earlyjune, south of the city, there was a battle, the russian defensive lines are in black here. Here you can see the russian defensive lines heavily mined, interspersed trenches, artillery, bunkers, very hard for ukraine to get through all of that. This verified Drone Footage Shows what happened when a Ukrainian Armed patrol ran into a minefield. Some of the close up staff is too graphic but these minefields and russian defences are so intense it makes it very hard for the ukrainians to advance southwards. The russians have been innovative in what they have been innovative in what they have done. This is their tm 62 anti tank mine. Some of ukraines armour will withstand a strike by one of these but not buy too. So the russians are putting two of them together to blow up through the han of a together to blow up through the han ofa ukrainian together to blow up through the han of a ukrainian armoured vehicle. This footage here shows a whole bunch of these russian anti tank mines that have disabled a western supply tank. Another weapon that the russians are using, very effectively is the alligator, the ka 52 attack helicopter. Given all these factors, how successful could this counteroffensive be . The how successful could this counteroffensive be . ~. ,. , counteroffensive be . The Ukrainian Forces wanted counteroffensive be . The Ukrainian Forces wanted to counteroffensive be . The Ukrainian Forces wanted to retake counteroffensive be . The Ukrainian Forces wanted to retake all counteroffensive be . The Ukrainian Forces wanted to retake all the i forces wanted to retake all the occupied territories, including crimea. I do not think that that will happen any time soon. What will happen any time soon. What ukraine does will happen any time soon. What ukraine does have will happen any time soon. What ukraine does have in will happen any time soon. What ukraine does have in its will happen any time soon. What ukraine does have in its favour is some very powerful western supplied weaponry such as the storm shadow of long range missile, british supplied. And these are allowing ukraine to hit distant targets, trying to undermine russias defences from within. But the problem here is that all of this takes time and that is a luxury ukraine doesnt have. Within three months, the rainy season will have arrived, turning a lot of the roads into mud, making it difficult for ukraine to advance. Frank gardner, bbc news. That is good enough for the chilean contingent who plan to dance to the end. Jean mackenzie, bbc news, south korea. Stay with us here on bbc news. I will be back later. Thank you for watching. Hello. It feels more like autumn than august out there thanks to storm antoni. The shield of cloud on the satellite picture, this has been named by the met office because of the potential for disruption, particularly on the western edge of this area of low pressure as it journeys eastwards through the rest of today. So a met Office Amber Warning covering parts of South West Wales and south west england, the risk of gusts of 60 mph or more, particularly for exposed coasts and hills, but even quite a long way inland some quite strong, unusually strong winds for this time of year, hence the risk of disruption. Also some pretty heavy bursts of rain journeying eastwards, in fact some thunderstorms likely across southern and Eastern Parts of england, some pretty hefty showers across parts of Northern England up to scotland. Perhaps fewer showers out towards the west as we head towards the end of the day. Temperatures quite disappointing, some places only up to 1a degrees. Through this evening and overnight in our area of low pressure roles eastwards and we will continue to see one or two showers, particularly out to the west, towards the end of the night, and also some Rain Lingering in Eastern Parts, in between we will see clear spells and that will allow it to turn relatively cool, 7 12 , but into tomorrow this area of High Pressure tries to build from the rest, so certainly a drier and brighter day. There will still be some showers around, that the odd heavy, thundery one, particularly across parts of scotland. The Winds Continuing to ease, though still quite breezy across eastern england. With sunshine, not as much cloud or rain, a bit warmer, 17 20 at best. As we head for the coming week, we start off with some further frontal systems, so a bit of rain at times, but by the middle part of the week i pressure begins to build. I dont think we are looking at a prolonged spell of completely dry and settled weather, but we will see something drier than we have had of late and we will also start to bring in some warmer air, so temperatures at least for a time are set to climb, 25 or 26 degrees looking quite possible, but we do have the chance for some showery rain to return by the end of the week. Goodbye for now. This is bbc news, the headlines. Pakistans former Prime Minister, imran khan, has been given a three year Jail Sentence over corruption allegations. Mr khan was found guilty of not declaring money from selling gifts he received while in office and denies any wrongdoing. Ukraine has damaged a russian fuel tanker in its second Sea Drone Attack in two days. In an unverfied video sent to the bbc by a Ukrainian Security service source, they claim it shows the moment of attack. And a danger to life warning has been issued, as storm antoni hits parts of the uk, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. It is the uks first named storm in more than a year. Those are the headlines here on bbc news
