Imran khan, pakistans former Prime Minister, has been arrested, after being sentenced to three years in prison. His team say they will file an appeal against the ruling. And in a statement on camera, mr khan calls on supporters to continue peaceful protests. Dont sit silently at home, he says. Thejudge found him guilty of failing to declare money he had earned from selling state gifts. As the decision was announced in islamabad a crowd, including some prosecuting lawyers, began chanting, imran khan is a thief, outside court. Multiple cases have been filed against mr khan in the last 16 months. In may, he was detained for not appearing at court as requested but was subsequently released after the arrest was declared illegal. Since then, his party has been under intense pressure from the authorities with many senior officials leaving and thousands of supporters arrested, accused of being involved in the protests that followed imran khans arrest. The Pakistan Parliament will dissolve on 9th august and a Caretaker Government will take over in the run up to the elections. This is another company is once again asked his supporters to come out but this time around the reaction, it is a bit calm. Right now, if you see the situation, there is heavy deployment of police and not only this, during his arrest there was heavy deployment at that time, too. We have seen, in the past, when he was arrested on the 9th of may, his protesters came in a large, huge numberand 9th of may, his protesters came in a large, huge number and there was also violent protests were reported but now today we have seen after his arrest, we havent seen much of supporters who came here in support of imran khan. Up until now, it is reported that he has been, after his arrest he is being taken away from the city. You can see his Security Team and legal this is the situation right now and the protesters, there were approximately two dozen protesters who were peaceful, Chanting Slogans in favour of the leader. They also have gone away from this spot after the heavy deployment of police has been made here so this is a situation after imran khan got arrested today. Imran khan spoke to Stephen Sackur on the bbc s Hardtalk Programme recorded on the 2nd of august, just a few days ago. Stephen put it to him that from the outside it looked as if a legal noose was tightening around his neck. And he asked whether it felt that way what was hoped by the establishment which removed me, what they hoped was that the party would just fizzle away and normally it happens when you are out of power, youre out of power for quite a while but instead, what happened, the most unusual thing in this country that the piety s popularity kept growing and in the by elections that took place, out of 37 by elections, my party swept 30 of them. And this is despite the establishment backing the government parties. So, since then, attempts are being made to knock me out of the game. I had two Assassination Attempts on me and, apart from that, now close to my double century, almost 200 cases. And the to either imprison me or disqualify me or both. Xyour disqualify me or both. Your contention, disqualify me or both. Your contention, i disqualify me or both. Your contention, i guess, disqualify me or both. Your contention, i guess, is disqualify me or both. Look, stephen, someone to the age that it . Absolutely nothing. Look, stephen, someone to the age of. That it . Absolutely nothing. Look, i stephen, someone to the age of 70 never had one criminal case against him. In the last few months, how can you have 200 criminal cases. And he was someone who this country knows for 50 years. You know, i am was someone who this country knows for 50 years. You know, iam not someone who this country doesnt know. Notjust as a cricketer. As someone who has done the biggest charitable projects in our history, who people get more money than anyone in our history, who trust with their money. So people dont believe there is. And, as a result, according to the opinion polls, rather than the popularity going down, it isjust rather than the popularity going down, it is just going further up. So that was imran khan speaking to stephen on the bbc s hard talk programme. Just a clip of that. And you can watch Stephen Sackur s full interview with imran khan today at 11 30gmt or i2 30bst so coming up shortly, and at 15 30gmt and tomorrow at the same times. I spoke to Imran Khans Lawyer, intazar panjutha, and asked what how they planned to defend imran khan. We have filed a number of petitions today. We have failed before the Supreme Court of pakistan the decision taken by the Islamabad High Court yesterday, whereby it was announced that it has been decided in our favour. Announced that it has been decided in ourfavour. Interestingly, when the vet in order came out, it was against what we had paid for. We filed it today and then there was another Transfer Application against thejudge who another Transfer Application against the judge who was conducting this trial because the trial has been conducted in such a manner that never, in the history of pakistan, has seen such a biased trial, such a trial based on this trial by a kangaroo type court. And you can, you can simply say that we have never witnessed a trial where the accused was never given the opportunity to defend himself. So. Opportunity to defend himself. So, 0k, a opportunity to defend himself. So, 0k. A counle opportunity to defend himself. So, 0k, a couple of things ijust want to point out rather than discuss with you. Again, the information minister, because, obviously, i have to put to you what statements he has with his foot appears not with us but i can certainly put you what is being said publicly. He said that the arrest happened after a full investigation proper Legal Proceedings in the trial court. Let me just ask you. What is the basis of your defence. Did imran khan sell state gifts . That is the first point. The element well, actually, the case, the entire case which has been built up, which has been made against imran khan is that he failed to declare in his statement before the Election Commission of pakistan something which was supposed to be given by every member of the national assembly,. And did he . You make the fiscal years, which the 30th ofjune in pakistan. 50. 30th ofjune in pakistan. So, basically. 30th ofjune in pakistan. So, basically, our 30th ofjune in pakistan. So, basically, our cases 30th ofjune in pakistan. S57, basically, our cases that We 30th Ofjune in pakistan. S513, basically, our cases that we have not concealed even a single asset. You did that by the 30th i them. So that was done by the 30th ofjune . You did that by the 30th of june, like you said . He ofjune . You did that by the 30th of june, like you said . It has never happened that imran khan has concealed any of his assets and so the entire case has been made On Political Grounds and when he is demanding a fair opportunity, a fair trial. He has been denied that. But had the witnesses been allowed to produce before the court, the case would have been entirely different. Now, Nothing Incriminating Ore was put to the imran khan. Whenever the Court Required him, he appeared before the court, even a few days ago. He recorded a statement under section 3a2 where he answered all the questions. Interestingly, every question which was put to imran khan had no whatsoever to the crimes mentioned so the case is not the one which has been presented. And mentioned so the case is not the one which has been presented. Which has been presented. And that was imran khans which has been presented. And that was Imran Khans Lawyer which has been presented. And that was Imran Khans Lawyer speaking l which has been presented. And that| was Imran Khans Lawyer speaking to me earlier. Lets look at another developing story now a russian Merchant Ship Carrying Fuel has reportedly been hit and disabled by a ukrainian sea drone near the occupied Crimean Peninsula. This unverified video was sent to the bbc by a Ukrainian SecurityService Source which they say shows the moment of attack. According to russian reports the engine room of the tanker, the sig, was damaged in the attack in the kerch strait. And the vessel, apparently on its way to syria to take oil to Russian Troops, is now being towed. Sources at ukraines Security Service have claimed responsibility for the strike. And lets remind you of these pictures, from friday , where a Russian Navy Landing ship was hit by a ukrainian sea drone off the black sea port of novorossiysk, Hundreds Of Kilometres from ukrainian controlled territory. This video emerged on social media apparently showing footage from the drone. 0ur ukraine correspondent, James Waterhouse outlined what is known about the attack. Its been another morning where sources at the Ukrainian Security service have disseminated messages claiming to have successfully damaged a russian vessel. We dont know for sure whether it is indeed damaged. There are reports on russian state media suggesting that it was it did come under attack. But its always hard to be certain with these kind of events. But nevertheless, the Security Service released footage appearing to show the moment this Unmanned Sea Drone made its way towards a cargo vessel carrying oil reportedly for Russian Troops in syria. And it happened close to the kerch strait, the kerch bridge, which connects russia to occupied crimea. Its become a symbol of russias occupation for so many ukrainians. And yesterday we were told that a warship, a russian warship and the port was destroyed, well, badly damaged. It was listing heavily to one side and also had to be towed to shore. Thats a major terminal for moscow, for grain and oil exports. And theres also an important navy base. And i think there is a backdrop here where ukrainian ports are getting pummeled by russian drones, the majority of which are launched from its black sea navalfleet. These are waters where russia has complete control, but it seems that ukraine is trying to counter punch further afield. In its words, it wants to stop russia from using the black sea as blackmail. But i think it also is trying to to frustrate russian supply lines. It did it last year when it successfully retook swathes of territory. And i think with its stuttering Counter Offensive at the moment, its hoped that this will directly feed into the battlefield. Earlier i spoke to sam cranny evans an Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services institute and an expert in naval warfare. He told me more on the significance of ukraines use of drones in the war. Well, they have used them quite extensively earlier on in the war primarily to paint in the russian fleet at sebastopol and the big change now is the dramatically increased range of the sea drones they are using, all the way across to the other side of the Crimean Peninsula and also shift in targeting to a commercial vessel, albeit one with a bit of a murky past is potentially going to change the dynamics of the conflict and open up to further rights or escalation. Just before we look at a possible resolution to this, the talks taking place in saudi arabia, i wonder if you could talk about the geopolitical rather than local strategy and the advantage that the kerch strait and bridge gives russia and what would happen if ukraine worked to target this particular area . They have attempted many different ways to try and isolate crimea, isolate the Russian Troops. And damage the logistics supplies that are moving through that entire region. Best viewed as part of a much Bigger Picture ukraine in general is trying to restrict the flow of logistics into the Russian Forces fighting in ukraine and generally, eat up resources so for example, the attack on the tanker raises the question of whether or not the russian navy has to protect every Merchant Vessel moving through the black sea that is relevant to its own cause and operations . This is actually quite a significant challenge. We have seen the us considering it in the street of hormones, placing Military Personnel on every civilian tanker that the us is willing to protect, it eats up resources sometimes. So by doing this strike, the knock on effects in terms of logistics, in terms of the fuel reaching Russian Troops in syria or whatever it was intended to do, that might be relatively insignificant. The Operational Impact to potentially protect every single vessel is huge and significant. Lets turn to weather events in the uk, where the met office is warning of potential road closures, power cuts and flying debris as storm antoni batters wales and south west england. Amber alerts are in place for high winds, and heavy rain is also expected in Northern Ireland. Thomas morgan has been braving the weatherfor us in penarth. It is raining quite heavily now. It has been erratic this morning. It was mostly the window was due to cause the most disruption across South West Wales and the West Of England but at the moment now, the wind seems to have died down a little bit. As you can see, the stormy seas have got a slightly more calm, can i say . And it is the rain thatis calm, can i say . And it is the rain that is really hitting here in south wales but this bad weather, i guess, though his name out this morning is because this is so unusual to have this miserable buy that this time of year, really. You dont expect to happen at the wettest relies on record last month and in this month, as we do start into august, to have another state that is just wet and miserable and wendy, again, really. This is only the third time since the met Office Naming Storms they have named a storm again today. They named storm antoni and that is fairly significant, just showing you how gravity is that you this bad weather in august in the uk. This is a time that Southern Europe is seeing a heatwave and we are here seeing a heatwave and we are here seeing record levels of rainfall, of course. The way things are going, it doesnt look like this rain wendy is going to stop any time soon as well. Now lets return to our top story the conflict in ukraine. Its been two months since Ukrainian Forces launched their long awaited Counter Offensive aimed at pushing the invading Russian Forces out of the areas theyve seized. The uk, the us and other western nations have invested heavily in these efforts, donating billions of pounds of military equipment, and training soldiers. So, two months on, how is ukraine coping against formidable russian defences . The bbc s security correspondent Frank Gardner has teamed up with bbc verify to assess what progress is being made. Right. So this is what the map looks like 18 months on after the full scale russian invasion last year. If it looks familiar, thats because it is. It really hasnt changed that much since last november with the russian occupied areas shaded in red. Now, in orderfor ukraines counteroffensive to succeed, it needs to cut the russian area in two. Now, earlier this summer, in earlyjune, south of the city, the town of 0raibi, there was a battle. The russian defensive lines are in black here. Lets have a zoom in and look here. You can see the russian defensive lines, heavily mined, interspersed trenches, artillery bunkers, very hard for ukraine to get through all of that. This verified Drone Footage here shows what happened when a Ukrainian Armored patrol ran into a minefield. Some of the close up stuff is, frankly, too graphic to show. But the point is that these minefields and russian defenses are so heavy, theyre so intense, that it makes it very slow going for the ukrainians to advance southwards. And the russians have been quite innovative in some of the things theyve done. So this, for example, is their tmn 62 anti tank mine. Now, some of ukraines armor will withstand a strike by one of these, but not by two. So what are the russians do . Theyre putting two of them, one on top of another, to blow up through the hull of a Ukrainian Armored vehicle. And this footage here shows a whole bunch of these russian anti tank mines that have disabled a western supplied tank. Another weapon that the russians are using very effectively is the alligator, the k 52 attack helicopter. So given all these factors, how successful could this Counter Offensive actually be . The Ukrainian Forces wanted to retake all the occupied territories, including crimea. I do not think that that will happen any time soon. What ukraine does have in its favor, though, is some very powerful western supplied weaponry, such as, for example, the storm shadow, long range missile, british supplied. The Ukrainian Forces wanted to retake all the occupied territories, including crimea. I do not think that that will happen any time soon. What ukraine does have in its favour, though, is some very powerful western supplied weaponry, such as, for example, the storm shadow, long range missile, british supplied. And these are allowing ukraine to hit distant targets, trying to undermine russias defenses from within. But, you know, the problem here is that all of this takes time and thats a luxury ukraine doesnt have. Within three months, the rainy season will have arrived, turning a lot of the roads into mud, making it difficult for ukraine to advance. Frank gardner, bbc news. Lets leave you with this pope francis is marking World Youth Day with a visit to portugal, where hes been visiting the shrine of fatima. Hes recited the rosary with sick and disabled young people before travelling back to lisbon. Hello, there. Its been a very wet start to the day, not a great start to the weekend, of course, with storm antoni thats been moving its way in, giving us some strong winds and some heavy rain. That was the scene this morning in staffordshire. That rain is really quite nasty on the roads, so do take care if youre travelling today. This is storm antoni. Its moving its way gradually eastward, this big area of low pressure. Look at the white lines here, the isobars quite close together towards wales and south Western Areas of england. Thats where were going to see the strongest winds today and theres an Amber Warning from the met office. We could see some damaging gusts of wind of 50 70 mph, particularly around coastal areas of South West Wales, in towards devon as well. So those could provide some pretty tricky conditions for those down in that part of the world holidaying. Now, the rain is going to gradually move its way eastward, but then therell be some thunderstorms developing across southern and south eastern areas during this afternoon. Showers likely across scotland turning a bit drier in Northern Ireland, compared to this morning. And it will feel disappointingly cool for the time of year, 13, 14 celsius where youve got more persistent rain across the midlands, 15 to 16 celsius with some sunny spells across scotland. Now, storm antoni will continue to move eastwards overnight and itll clear away, so sunday certainly looking like the quieter, brighter day for many of us. Still a bit of rain affecting the far east of england early in the morning. Some gusty winds as well, but thats going to ease off. And then therell be some dry weather for many eastern areas, but showers developing across scotland, through the pennines, wales, Northern Ireland as well. Some of those could be on the sharp side, but there will be some dry spells with some sunshine in between. And because therell be more sunshine through tomorrow, it will feel a bit warmer as well. Those temperatures getting up to about 17 20 celsius. 0n into the early part of next week, it stays unsettled. Therell be some showers, maybe longer spells of rain during tuesday and temperatures about 18, i9 celsius. But if youre after something a little bit drier, more like summer, well, we have to wait until wednesday, thursday, where we start to see higher pressure having some influence on our weather, keeping the Weather Systems in the atlantic just at bay for a while. So later in the week, it will turn drier and brighter, temperatures will rise as well thursday into friday, so we could see those temperatures into the low to even the mid 20s, so something a bit more like summer. Bye bye. This is bbc news. Iam i am lu kwesa i am lukwesa burak.
