The independent commission estimated that more than a800 children, based on the people who came forward as witnesses, or as alleged victims, were abused in that period, and also the churchs reaction to that report was not seen as very positive by many people, even themselves said they could have done better in the way they reacted to it. Many of us will read Online Reviews before buying a product or booking a holiday. Can you fully trust them . A bbc breakfast investigation has found it is all too easy to get fake reviews posted online even for things such as medical procedures. When it comes to where you spend your money, for so Many Services and purchases now, we are inundated with choice. It is not surprising when looking for a business you need, what is the first thing many people do . They google act. Having a five star rating from reviewers on google can help a Business Stand Out In Search Results and project of the rankings. But fake reviews can be bought online and there is evidence of them being used not only on google back on platforms like amazon, trust pilot and the apple store. Does it influence you . Yeah. Why is that . Because if its bad reviews, youre not going to want to go somewhere. And if theres loads of good reviews, then you want to go. You want to go. Do you trust them . Yeah. Even though you have no idea whos written them. Yeah. Do you ever think they might be not real orfake . Sometimes you question it if its certain online companies, because then youd think, oh, well, its interesting how every single reviews all positive. Welcome to the website. We found examples of fake reviews being used by all sorts of companies, but even by some medical businesses. What if youre looking for, say, a chiropractor in ipswich . The second business to appear in Google Search results is the ipswich spine clinic, run by dr amit patel and its got an almost perfect a. 9 star rating from customers on google reviews. Whether your condition s due to some trauma or prolonged activities, we may be able to help you with that. How was that impressive rating really achieved . Look at this. Five star reviewer Santosh Kumar says dr amit was brilliant. He assessed my injury and came up with a treatment plan. I felt i was in safe hands and highly recommend this place. But this reviewer has also reviewed a taxi service in canada, a dentist in the us, Conveyancing Services In Australia and a bar in austria, which looks a bit suspicious. And to prove these reviews cannot be real, we cross referenced in detail a number of customers whove not only reviewed the ipswich spine clinic, but have also reviewed exactly the same businesses all over the world. Way too much of a coincidence. We also looked into this dental business in manchester called smiles better, which advertises its five star rating on its website with a link to its google reviews. Customer rose bellamy says, im so happy with my new smile, superfast services and everyone was so helpful. And the business writes back, were so happy that youre delighted with the treatment provided. Keep on smiling. And when we did our detailed cross referencing, our Investigation Shows this review and a number of others for this business are fake. I mean, its bad enough if you buy a pair of dodgy bluetooth headphones off a fake review. If you try and get a medical treatment done, and it turns out that the review that you chose the establishment on was fake, that could have really serious repercussions. The government really needs to legislate against fake reviews. Selling them, buying them, and hosting them on your platforms should be illegal. They should be facing a fine. There needs to be some deterrent from just buying a load of fake reviews because, for now, its easy to do. We also found negative Online Reviews from fake customers posted for one of the ipswich spine clinics local competitors. When we asked the clinic about this, dr amit patel told us that he had outsourced their marketing to a company in india and hadnt himself seen any of the reviews being posted online. Since we contacted him, he says hes now asked for the reviews to be removed. Im calling from the bbc. We also put our findings to smiles better in manchester because this doesnt look very trustworthy for customers, does it . Weve asked this Dentistry Business several times about the fake five star reviews online, but theyve declined to give us any response or explanation. Google says its policies clearly state that reviews must be based on real experiences and that it does monitor them for fraudulent content. But, as our Investigation Shows, many go unnoticed. The first Asylum Seekers are now unlikely to move to an Acommodation Barge the Bibby Stockholm In Dorset until next week. The home office has blamed the latest delay on checks on Working Practices for port staff and insisted there were no fire safety issues. But the Fire Brigades Union has said it intends to write to the government, after its members raised serious concerns. Speaking to nick ferraris programme on lbc radio this morning the Prime Minister rishi sunak was asked about the delay and denied the policy had been a shambles. No, it hasnt. The first of three french planes has arrived back in paris with more than Two Hundred And Fifty people on board. Italy has also flown out dozens of its own nationals as well as other europeans and american citizens. Meanwhile defence officials from west africas Regional Bloc, ecowas, are meeting on wednesday to discuss the Military Coup that took place in niger last week. Some countries in the region have come to the new leaderships defense, including burkina faso, mali, and guinea declaring that any Military Invention in the country would be considered a declaration of war. Niger is located in the sahail region. Its a key region for western countries in counterterrorism operations. 0ur correspondent in nairobi, Catherine Byaruhanga has the latest on the evacuations. The french and Italian Military flights have gone back home, Carrying Hundreds of citizens, not only french and italian citizens, but we understand there are americans and some African Citizens also on the italian flights. Evacuations are meant to continue today, some more people leaving on french flights. The italians also expect spaniards, sorry, are also expected to evacuate 70 of their nationals from their country. But in contrast, the United Kingdom is telling its citizens who wish to leave the country to stay indoors and to register. Potentially there might be some british evacuations. The americans, on the other hand, are saying they have no plans to evacuate any of their nationals. They dont think the situation has escalated enough to warrant an actual mission on their side. And we are also expecting this meeting today, ecowas countries coming together, military chiefs, starting in abuja, nigeria. What are we expecting to happen . Yes, this all points to the question of how does the situation in niger actually get resolved . So, what its neighbours are saying, ecowas in particular, this is the Regional Bloc in west africa, is that the military thats taken power should hand power back to the former president , mohamed bazoum, but the military there are refusing to do this. Now, what ecowas has threatened is that if this handing back of power does not happen by the weekend, that they could potentially use force against the coup leaders in the country. But when you speak to people who monitor the situation in the region, they say it seems highly unlikely that ecowas will go ahead with some kind of military intervention, and on top of that, we are seeing other countries in the region, so, for example, burkina faso, mali, guinea, countries are also led by the army, they are standing by the new niger military leaders, so there is a Huge International conundrum on how to resolve this situation, especially because niger is so crucial in the fight against Islamist Groups that are aligned to alqaeda and isis as well. So, a lot of people are trying to resolve the situation to have some stability in niger and the wider region, but really there seem to be very few options on the table right now. Visitors will get a chance to climb the 200 steps to get to the roof. But the tower will only be open during august and september. 0ur royal correspondent, daniela relph, has been to take in the view. Within the grounds of windsor castle, the round tower looms large, dating back to 1170. Its had some upgrades over the years, but had to close during the covid lockdown. Now the doors are open again for those of us who can face the 200 steps to the very top. Much of what you see inside hasnt been touched in centuries. The wooden roof has been here since the 1a00s, and youll get up close to the sebastopol bell. Installed during the reign of queen victoria, its only ever rung following the death of the monarch. As you emerge on to the lower parapet, youre around halfway up. Youll get a chance to pause and take in the signs of the fortress that this tower once was. Its at this point on the climb up that visitors are told to put their phones and their cameras away. Photos are banned because beyond the castle walls, are the royal familys private apartments. There are now 100 steps to go up the narrower spiral staircase. If youre nervous of heights, maybe dont look down. As we head to the highest point, the top of the tower, 65 metres up. On a clear day, the views are spectacular. The expanse of the long walk through Windsor Great Park is more impressive from up here. And as you do the circuit around the rooftop, you can also peer down into the grounds of the castle itself. Here, the lower ward around st georges chapel. And take a look around the corner, youll see the river thames as well as eton. Tell us, do you need a head for heights to do this particular tour . It does help if you have a head for heights. However, i dont have a great head for heights, but people, when they get up here are so wowed by what you can see, you actually forget about it. We dont call it Conquer The Tower for nothing. There is so much detail to take in. You can look through the arrow slits put in to enhance the castle defences, and even look down through what were called the murder holes, designed to target any enemy below. These views are about offering visitors Something Different a chance to see a part of the castle that isnt open to the public for most of the year with a unique perspective over windsor. And if you time your climb just right, youll find yourself with a special look at the changing of the guard. This is a tour, which gives you a birds eye view of british history. Officials in kyiv say their anti aircraft units have shot down drones attacking the ukrainian capital overnight. And weather woes for british farmers why too much rain is affecting their harvest. Lets get more on our top story and thats donald trump being indicted over his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Here was jack smith, special counsel investigating donald trump, announcing his findings. Today, an indictment was unsealed Charging Donaldj trump with conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to disenfranchise voters and conspiring and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding. The indictment was issued by a grand jury of citizens here in the district of columbia, and it sets forth the crimes charged in detail. I encourage everyone to read it in full. The attack on our nations capitol onjanuary 6, 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of american democracy. As described in the indictment, it was fuelled by lies, lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a Bedrock Function of the Us Government, the nations process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the president ial election. The men and women of Law Enforcement who defended the us capitol Onjanuary 6th are heroes. They are patriots and The Very Best of us. They did notjust defend a building, or the people sheltering in it they put their lives on the line to defend who we are as a country and as a people. They defended the very institutions and principles that defined the United States. Since the attack on our capitol, the Department Ofjustice Has remained committed to ensuring accountability for those criminally responsible for what happened that day. This case is brought consistent with that commitment. Our investigation of other individuals continues. In this case, my office will seek a speedy trial so that our evidence can be tested in court and judged by a jury of citizens. In the meantime, i must emphasise that the indictment is only an allegation and that the defendant must be presumed innocent until Proven Guilty Beyond A Reasonable Doubt in a court of law. I would like to thank the members of the Federal Bureau Of Investigation who are working on this investigation with my office, as well as the many Career Prosecutors and Law Enforcement agents from around the country who have worked on previous january 6th investigations. These women and men are Public Servants of the highest order and it is a privilege to work alongside them. Thank you. Well following that statement the us attorney general Merrick Garland said that the special counsel followed the facts and the law in the trump indictment. Immediately after the january six attack on our democracy, the career men and women of Thejustice Department engaged in what has become the largest investigation in our history. In november last, i appointed jack smith, special counsel, to take on the ongoing investigation, in order to underline the departments commitment to accountability and independence. Smith and his team have principled and experienced Career Agents and prosecutors, who have followed the facts on the law wherever they lead. Any questions about this matter will have to be answered by the filings made in the courtroom. 0ur North America correspondent nomia iqbal sent this update from outside the court where mr trump will appear later this week former President Donald Trump is due to appear in court behind me on thursday. Officials in kyiv say their anti aircraft units have shot down drones attacking the ukrainian capital overnight. They said drone debris was recovered in three areas of the city but there werent any reports of injuries. There were also drone attacks in the southern port of 0desa. These latest air raids follow a drone attack on the russian capital moscow. 0ur ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse sent this update from kyiv. We are now in the throes of Drone Strikes happening both in ukraine and russia. Its worth stressing, though, that in ukraine, dozens of civilians die every week. We have seen a College Dormitory directly hit by a Russian Missile overnight. But what we are also seeing are more and more Drone Strikes deep inside either russian territory or russian controlled territory in ukraine. Kyiv will never acknowledge responsibility, but theres been a definite heightening of language used, where you have president zelensky warning that the war is going to come to russia. Today we have a senior adviser, mykhailo podolyak, talking about the conflict being brought to the authors of this war, and hes promised more Drone Strikes. So, ukraine really is stretching the boundaries of denial, but we dont know for sure who is behind these Drone Strikes. Russia, after all, is no stranger to false flag operations where it fabricates events to justify future actions. Its currently raising the conscription age and increasing the find is people face for resisting mobilisation. And you wonder what ukraines western allies make of what is happening at the moment, because they have long been wary of this all spreading beyond ukraine and into russia, out of fear is of an escalation. Possibly their hopes of these Drone Strikes destabilising russias invasion, they might outweigh those fears of moscow tasting regret taking things to another level. As ukraine continues to make small gains on various fronts across the east and south of the country, its also battling a second, but no less aggressive front line in the form of russian propaganda. While disinformation has been used as a tactic since the war started back in 201a, when moscow annexed crimea, its become increasingly targeted, honing in on ukrainian front line female soldiers in particular. 0lga Malchevska travelled to ukraine to investigate and sent us this report. Small steps on the road to recovery. My name is andriana. Im a soldier, servicewoman. A female soldier and a special unit markswoman. Adriana is one of the best known members of Ukrainian Armed forces. Her unit drove over a landmine last december. Russian media reported she had been killed, describing her death in graphic detail and calling her a ukrainian nazi. But we have tracked her down in ukraine, in a hospital. We cant disclosed its Disc Location because of her safety. Shes alive and not surprised by the russian news. They published that i am without legs and without hands. And like, i was killed by them. They are professionals in propaganda. I am alive and i will protect my country. Adriana, like many other ukrainians, joined the Volunteer Battalion when russia invaded ukraine back in 201a. She spent a year with the battalion, which, like many of the others, was subsequently subsumed into the official army. Although not militarily trained she showed strong combat skills, including shooting. When you are on the front line and when you see a target, how do you feel about it . Is it a target or a person . It depends on the situation. Sometimes its a person because they are people. But if it will not be for me a target, i will be a target for them. Its a scenario shared by many in this hospital here. There are worries about the costs of rehabilitation. It can cost thousands of dollars a month for each soldier. But for adriana, the biggest concern is the impact on her family. She hasnt held her son for seven months. Two days ago, i was talking with him and he said to me that, mum, remember when we were a family and when we loved each other . So after two years of absence of me, and that he tried to remember a period when we were a family and we loved each other. And i tried to explain to him that we now are family and we love each other. But the period is such. A normalfamily life is some way off. Adriana is now preparing to return to the front line. The price paid is already too high to give up. Crews are still working to try to tackle a huge wildfire near the us canada border. Hundreds of homes have been evacuated, and many others told to be ready to leave at any moment in the town of 0roville. Its canadas worst Wildfire Season on record, with fires continuing to spread across parts of the pacific northwest. 0ur North America correspondent, nedda tawfeek, has the latest the Eagle Bluff Wildfire is still raging extremely close to the edge of the town of osoyoos. Now, things have eased considerably since saturday when that initial scare, when the blaze came through from the United States and spread incredibly quickly. But, nevertheless, authorities are still classifying this fire as out of control. Theyve had water bomber planes, helicopters in the sky, going back and forth all day to the lake of 0soyoos to try to bring this under control. Theyve also had over 50 firefighters fighting the blazes, but still, this is posing a threat here. They say, officials, that it is still something that is evolving a situation that is evolving. Theyre keeping a very close eye on the Wind Direction here on the dry, hot temperatures, seeing how that could affect the course of this fire. Now, canada has had a record year of wildfires with more than 30 million acres of land burnt so far. This, of course, is extremely concerning here because of its proximity to the town. There are dozens of Properties Still under Evacuation Orders and hundreds of others have been told to be ready to evacuate immediately if they need to. Residents described on saturday how they were told with very little notice that they didnt have time to pack, that they had to get out of town. And so that is really the concern here about what this fire will do in the coming days. It is still very much early, a portion of this, its only been a few days in. But for people here, they say its already felt like weeks. Lets head to pakistan. The bbc has learned that thousands of pakistani migrants are taking a dangerous route to reach europe illegally. Many are travelling from pakistan to libya, sometimes via egypt. Almost 300 pakistanis are thought to have drowned taking this route injune when their boat sank off the coast of greece. And according to the police in pakistan, nearly 13,000 pakistanis headed for libya and egypt this year, most haven t returned. 0ur pakistan correspondent Caroline Daveez sent this. I think what became really clear as we spoke to people was how difficult it would be to persuade people to not take these risks if they decided that they wanted to try to travel illegally. Now, its possible that people might decide to lay low while there is a crackdown going on, but ultimately it didnt seem to be dissuading them from wanting to try in the longer run, even with the knowledge of these sorts of stories like the shipwreck, and that was often because people already knew someone who had done thisjourney, whether that was a family member, a friend, someone who lived nearby sometimes, in some cases, evenjust people who were on social media. People also talked about the sort of pressures that they got from family, as well, asking them when they were going to make this journey and bear in mind the backdrop to all of this, pakistans economy is struggling, and the rupee is particularly weak against other currencies, so there is a real pressure on people who are earning abroad to send that money back and be able to keep people afloat. Now, of course, it is very, very difficult to know exactly how many people are travelling illegally, by the very nature of it, but of course the worry is that as pakistans economy struggles, people will continue to look for a way out of the country. In the uk, cold calling to offer Financial Services or products could be banned under new Government Plans outlined today. . The home office says fake scams cost the economy 750 Million Pounds in the last year. . 0ur correspondent robin brant has more. . The Scamming Industry is a huge one. Most of it originates online, but the government is moving to further protect those targeted by cold calls. Theyre often the most vulnerable. Scams have a massive impact across the board. There are financial impacts, but there are also massive emotional impacts on victims. And the problem that youve got is once youve been put on whats often referred to as a suckers list, which is a really awful phrase, but once your information is out there, you can be really targeted by scammers. Bans are already in place that outlaw cold calling on pensions and claim management services. Now the home office wants to go further and look at outlawing calls that push people into buying fake or fraudulent investments. It says sham cryptocurrencies, mortgages and insurance are top of the list. Tougher measures to tackle illegal advertising online are also being considered, although tech firms will have a crucial role there in any enforcement aimed at protecting vulnerable adults and children. Robin brant, bbc news. Here in the uk, an mp who was suspended for breaking covid Lockdown Rules, has lost her seat after a vote by constituents. A by election will now take place, after nearly 12,000 people signed a petition to remove Margaret Ferrier from office. 0ur scotland Political Correspondent andrew kerr reports. Leaflets have been disappearing through doors here for weeks already and people have been meeting politicians. But, this morning, the campaigns will get properly under way. For 81,000 constituents, a rare chance to deliver their verdict on politics locally and scotland wide. She should have been away a long time ago. Shes an absolute disgrace to rutherglen. I think it was probably wise that there is a by election and then thats just. The person who people want in is in, do you know what i mean . Ill be honest, i dont really think its going to change much. 0k. Theylljust probably put somebody in, whos the same as the same. In a Statement Last night, Margaret Ferrier said she decided some time ago she wouldnt stand in the by election, adding that this had been a difficult and taxing process, but it had been the privilege of her life to serve as the areas mp. And i declare that Margaret Ferrier is elected to serve. Applause Margaret Ferrier won the rutherglen and Hamilton West seat from labour in december 2019. As the snp candidate, she beat her labour rival by more than 5,000 votes. Ged killen, labourand co operative party, 19,000. A sweet victory, as she had been defeated by him two and a half years previously. But shortly after she retook the seat, the pandemic hit. It was Margaret Ferrier s decisions during this time which led to the current situation. Id like to start by paying tribute to all nhs key workers. While lockdown restrictions were in place in september 2020, she was awaiting a Covid Test Result while in london. The test came back positive, but she took the train home to glasgow to avoid self isolating in a hotel in london. This journey broke the covid laws in place at the time. She was reported to the police and suspended from the snp. Fast forward to january 2021. Margaret ferrier was arrested and charged with culpable and reckless conduct. She pleaded guilty last august. Her punishment, 270 hours of community service. The ayes to the right 185. After the courts decision, it was then in the hands of the House Of Commons authorities. Its Standards Committee recommended that Margaret Ferrier be suspended. She appealed, but the decision held. Mps voted to suspend herfor 30 days. That length of time means a recall petition automatically happens. And thats what our constituents have been able to take part in since. Andrew kerr, bbc news. There are more than 50,000 deaf children living in the uk, and 90 of those are born to Hearing Parents with little or no experience of deafness. 0ne family is now calling for better access to free british Sign Language classes, after struggling to communicate with their two deaf children. 0ur reporter katie martin has been to meet them. Its the battle that people often dont have the time or the resources to fight. Im yasmin. Im here at home with my family. Ive got my husband, sam, and my two children, 0bi and iris. Me and sam, were both hearing, and the two children are both deaf. 0bi was born profoundly deaf, so he was quite a straightforward candidate for cochlear implants, whereas iris was born moderate, severely deaf. She was the next measurable point, down from being accepted in the criteria. Her hearing has deteriorated, which has got her over that line, so she can get some access to sound, hopefully, with cochlear implants. Helicopter. Helicopter it was so hard. We didnt we didnt know anything about deaf people. We didnt know anything about the deaf community. There are no deaf schools of deaf units in dorset. Theres not as many deaf children in this area. And that meant there was no ready made bsl classes down the road. And the waiting list for the one that was in our local college was, you know, we were going to have to wait nine months to get on the course and we needed something then and there. The cost of learning bsl is a barrier for many families with a deaf child and they often look to charities to cover the cost. Theres no funding, you know, you dontjust get, heres some funding for you to learn a language that your child needs. You have to push and fight and source that funding from every avenue possible. It was only really when we had our second child, iris, that was deaf that things started to fall into place. What is that one . Weve now got some funding from the Dorset Deaf Children Society to have more Sign Language tuition for the family as well, especially now 0bi in iris are getting older. They need full on sentences. They dontjust need the odd word that you can pick up on youtube videos. They need language. They need. Like a Hearing Child would have english, they need bsl input. Yasmine applied for a grant from the birkdale trust, but the funding only covers one parent for one child to learn level 1 bsl, its not ongoing. Level1 is £500 ish, give or take. It increases by about £100, £150 each level. And from what ive looked at, i think were going to have to go to at least level 3 to be able to communicate effectively. So its important for 0bi that he does have access to spoken language. Its even more important for iris, given that its her only language. At nighttime they dont wear their ears. When theyre poorly, they dont wear their ears, when theyre tired, they dont wear their ears. So, you know, you need to be able to have that communication. And iris is getting to an age where she wants to walk around. But you cant, you know, say, iris, this way she cant hear you. Despite the challenges they face every day, yasmine and sam are unwavering in their commitment to giving 0bi and iris as many Communication Skills as they can to equip them for the hearing world. Katie martin, bbc news. The Met Office Has has confirmed thatjuly has been one of the wettest on record. The wet conditions are causing a big problem forfarmers who are struggling to harvest quickly and efficiently. Our Environment Correspondent jonah fisher reports. Growing crops without water is impossible. But too much rain creates problems, too. Eleanor gilbert is from a farming family in berkshire and is learning to work in a changing climate. This morning because the sun is finally shining were off to combine some oilseed rape. After a july dominated by rain, shes making the most of a break in the weather to harvest crops that ideally should no longer be in the ground. Eleanor is working with her youngersister, lucy, to bring in the rapeseed. Such is the pressure to finish the job before the rain starts again that theyve been working late into the night. But the crop is still too moist, and warm air has to be pumped through it on the floor of this store to try and make it dry enough to be sold. If we send it off higher than a 15 Moisture Content well get rejections and also fines. Best way to tell, farmers like to bite. You can tell theres too much moisture. In north herefordshire its time to pick the blackcurrants for a well known cordial. It rained a lot here injuly, too, but thats not the biggest problem. Blackcurrants are a sensitive bunch, and last winter there just werent enough cold days. It means that weve got this very uneven bud break, weve got uneven flowering, and weve got a very uneven harvest with some. There will be some berries here that will be on the ground because they were ripe too early, and there will be some that potentially are not quite ripe. Theyll get a crop this year, but work is continuing to develop tougher Blackcurrant Varieties better suited to our changing climate. Global warming is already making the uks weather hotter and wetter. What farmers can successfully grow in british soil is changing too. Now its time for a look at the weather with carol kirkwood. Hello again. The unsettled weather continues today with some heavy, thundery rain and some strong winds. Low pressure is driving the weather, it is pulling from the west towards the east, taking its rain with it, followed by showers and you can see from the isobars it is going to be windy, particularly so in areas adjacent to the english channel. Now, that is to affect our coastline across the southwest, southern counties of england, the Channel Islands with gusts widely a0 to 55 mph, locally with exposure, up to 60 miles an hour. Meteo france, because of the effects it is having in North West France, have actually named this system storm patricia. So, for us, weve got the rain continuing to push over to the east, lingering across north east england, heavy showers pushing over to the south east, some of those thundery. For scotland and for Northern Ireland and for parts of wales, it will brighten up as we go through the afternoon. But nonetheless, there will still be some showers. Through this evening and overnight, rain pushes away from the south east, we have the Wind Change Direction to northerly, pulling in some cloud and also some showers and these are our overnight lows, 12 to 1a degrees. As we go through tomorrow, what youll find is the low pressure will have moved away, we are all in this northerly or north westerly air stream, its going to be a blustery day and, once again, it is going to be a mixture of bright spells, areas of cloud, some sunny spells and some showers. A lot of the showers will be in the north and also the west, some getting into some central areas, some of us will miss them altogether and have a dry day. But, in that wind, it will feel cool, temperatures below average for the time of year. We are looking at highs of 1a celsius in stornoway to 21 degrees as we push down towards london. Into friday, more of the same, really, we are still in this north westerly blustery wind with some showers. This time, though, perhaps more of them will be across central and eastern areas, where across eastern england, south east scotland, they could be heavy and thundery. Temperatures 13 to about 19 degrees, so coming down just that little bit. Into the weekend, still some devil in the detail for saturday. But it looks like a new area of low pressure is going to bring in some rain and then into sunday, we are back into showers but it remains unsettled into the beginning of next week. Live from london. This is bbc news. Trump charged again a fresh indictment for the former President Accused of plotting to overturn his election defeat. Tod to d the indictment was unsealed Charging Donaldj trump with conspiring to defraud the United States. Pope francis touches down in portugal for a series of events celebrating the youth of the world. This was the live scene in lisbon. Hello, im frankie mccamley. Donald trump has been criminally charged with plotting to overturn his defeat in the us president ial election of 2020 the most serious legal threat yet to the former president as he campaigns to return to the white house. Hes charged with four counts in the a5 Page Indictment brought by special Counseljack Smith. The charges are Conspiracy To Defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, 0bstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy against the rights of citizens. The former president is due to appear before a federal Court On Thursday in Washington Dc as Our Washington correspondent sean dilley explains. Crowd we love trump. He is the first president to be charged with a federal crime but if previous cases are anything to go by, Donald Trumps third indictment is only likely to boost his popularity with Republican Voters. The charges he faces though are serious, the a5 Page Indictment accuses the former president of knowingly spreading false claims about Election Fraud to trick and persuade states into helping him overturn Election Results. The attack on our Nations Capital onjanuary sixth, 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of american democracy. It is described in the indictment it was fuelled by lies. Lies by the defendant, targeted at obstructing a Bedrock Function of the Us Government, a nations process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the president ial election. Donald trump responded by posting a Campaign Statement on his social Media Network, likening his prosecution to lawless persecution in nazi germany. Shortly after charges were announced, he sent a Campaign E Mailvowing to continue his campaign for the white house. But thursdays hearing here in washington, dc is all about the crimes mr trump is accused of committing in the two months following the 2020 election. He has already been charged in two other unrelated cases. He is due to face trial in new york next march of crimes he is alleged to have committed in relation to payments to a former adult film star. In may he is set to stand trial in florida over claims he unlawfully held onto military and other classified documents. For now, it is all a question of time. In other cases mr trump has tried to delay until after next years elections but prosecutors in this case say they want the child to go case say they want the trial to go ahead as soon as possible. Sean dilley, bbc news in washington. We will continue with that story but just before radio i will take you to lisbon where we have live pictures coming in, pope francis is starting a five day visit to portugal to attend World Youth Day, there he is, he is meeting senior members of the clergy and crowds and crowds of people who have gathered. We expect more than 1 Million People who have gathered. We expect more than1 Million People people who have gathered. We expect more than 1 Million People to people who have gathered. We expect more than1 Million People to head to the capital to see him. We will bring you more on that as and when we get it. We have our correspondents in the region who have all the analysis that visit. Let us head back to our top story. Joining me live now is greg swenson from republicans 0verseas uk, and Leslie Vinjamuri director of the us and Americas Programme at chatham house. Thank you both forjoining us here on bbc news. First, greg, donald trump facing the most serious legal threat, what is your reaction . T am threat, what is your reaction . I am not sure its threat, what is your reaction . I am not sure its the threat, what is your reaction . I am not sure its the most threat, what is your reaction . I am not sure its the most serious. I would not sure its the most serious. I would argue the Document Case has more would argue the Document Case has more credibility or more meat on the bone more credibility or more meat on the bone you more credibility or more meat on the bone. You have to look at the cumulative effect. Yes, there is an argument cumulative effect. Yes, there is an argument on the right this is the weaponisation of the Justice System or they weaponisation of the Justice System or they are weaponisation of the Justice System or they are only inviting him to elevate or they are only inviting him to elevate him in the Nomination Process elevate him in the Nomination Process but ultimately hurt him in The General Election. The cumulative effect The General Election. The cumulative effect here The General Election. The cumulative effect here might start having an effect effect here might start having an effect on effect here might start having an effect on voters in the polls right now effect on voters in the polls right now. Up to date he has received incredible now. Up to date he has received incredible bumps in the polls whenever there is an indictment, especially whenever there is an indictment, especially the indictment in new york where he picked up over 20 plus points york where he picked up over 20 plus points he york where he picked up over 20 plus points. He might get a bump here but you could points. He might get a bump here but you could argue he is at the point where you could argue he is at the point where he you could argue he is at the point where he has maxed out on getting support where he has maxed out on getting support because of these indictments and the support because of these indictments and the perception that it is a witchhunt or argument similar to that witchhunt or argument similar to that at witchhunt or argument similar to that. At some point, people might start considering that the cumulative effect is that there is too much cumulative effect is that there is too much baggage with President Trump too much baggage with President Trump and ultimately this will help hurt trump and ultimately this will help hurt him trump and ultimately this will help hurt him in The General Election. That hurt him in The General Election. That is hurt him in The General Election. That is it. Hurt him in The General Election. That is it. The hurt him in The General Election. That is it, The General Election coming up and donald trump as the republican front runner, leslie, how do you think this will affect his campaign . Do you think this will affect his camaiun . ,. ,. , campaign . First of all, let me say i think this is campaign . First of all, let me say i think this is the campaign . First of all, let me say i think this is the most campaign . First of all, let me say i think this is the most serious think this is the most serious charges we have seen so far. They are cumulative in the eyes of the public, people will look at these in the whole, this is a set of charges that get to the most fundamental norm of any democracy which is that you have to stand back and allow for a peaceful transition of power. These charges say the president knowingly obstructed the Electoral Process as opposed to what he tried to claim that he did not know, he believed there was fraud. In terms of the effect, first we have to remember that the legal case, the january six commission, the Accountability Process Kind of stands on its own, it is fundamental and difficult to imagine any other choice can be made other than looking at the accountability for such a grave assault on one of the most important democracies in the world. In terms of the political impact on the election, of course this is what we are all concerned about and watching. It looks like this is a former president who won wear the other would have a lock on the republican nomination and it looks this is short term will be solidified by politics are politics, a week is a long time, a month is a long time. This is a long road to travel not only in terms of The General Election but also the primary season so any number of things could come up which could change that but the real question is how does this affect views of independent voters, those who are not necessarily with the former president even if he gets the nomination. As time goes by, as these indictments and charges accumulate, as a Legal Process goes on, many people will peel away i think from a president that they think from a president that they think is too disruptive to ensure what americans love most which is the ability to do well economically and hold onto those freedoms and live a good life on a daily basis. Having a president that is fundamentally disruptive and gets an aware that daily life will not be attractive to Many Americans and we have seen this to a president who has lost numerous times, not least in the west town elections. You are talkin in the west town elections. You are talking about in the west town elections. You are talking about independent in the west town elections. You are talking about independent voters i in the west town elections. You are l talking about independent voters but let us talk about Republican Voters. What is the feeling on the ground with Republican Voters and their reaction to these latest charges, does it feel like they are rallying together, and on top of that do you think independent voters could be swayed or pushed away by this . Lesley is right, he is already putting lesley is right, he is already pulling purely with independence so i pulling purely with independence so i dont pulling purely with independence so i dont think he has a chance in the idont think he has a chance in the general i dont think he has a chance in the general because of that but with republican right now, the people paying republican right now, the people paying attention to all this, it is early paying attention to all this, it is early enough it is only the political early enough it is only the politicaljunkies, this will not last politicaljunkies, this will not last as politicaljunkies, this will not last. As people start coming back to the news last. As people start coming back to the news cycle, you will stay that debates the news cycle, you will stay that debates are on august 23. This is taking debates are on august 23. This is taking attention from the other candidates and preventing the focus, keeping candidates and preventing the focus, keeping the focus on President Trump which keeping the focus on President Trump which is keeping the focus on President Trump which is what he wants but it is also which is what he wants but it is also what which is what he wants but it is also what the left and the media in the us also what the left and the media in the us wants, they want trump to be the us wants, they want trump to be the candidate. The debates start and this indictment settles down, when that happens, we will start to see focus that happens, we will start to see focus on that happens, we will start to see focus on other candidates and have a Healthy Focus on other candidates and have a healthy debate. Six months ago, before healthy debate. Six months ago, before the alvin bragg indictment, ron desantis was only down ten points ron desantis was only down ten points to ron desantis was only down ten points to President Trump in the polls points to President Trump in the polls then points to President Trump in the polls then you had the two indictments and these are hurting the other indictments and these are hurting the other candidates, especially ron desantis the other candidates, especially ron desantis. Let the other candidates, especially ron desantis. ,. ,. , ~ the other candidates, especially ron desantis. ,. ,. , desantis. Let us look globally at this situation, desantis. Let us look globally at this situation, trump desantis. Let us look globally at this situation, trump and desantis. Let us look globally at this situation, trump and us this situation, trump and us politics are back in the limelight with these indictments, what is the perception internationally, lesley, would you say when looking at us politics . Would you say when looking at us olitics . ,. ,. Would you say when looking at us olitics . ,. ,. ,. , politics . First of all much of the focus on the politics . First of all much of the focus on the us politics . First of all much of the focus on the us is politics . First of all much of the focus on the us is on politics . First of all much of the focus on the us is on president | focus on the us is on President Biden and the Current Administration and support of ukraine, its leadership on any number of dimensions so that is a headline story but obviously people look back to the fact that there is a leading republican candidate has been indicted again on such a serious charge, thats a real problem. But also, this is a former president who has been indicted regarding a grave assault on democracy, it is demonstration there is an independent Legal Process. Not everybody in the us sees it that way but it sends a signal to the rest of the us to the rest of the world that the us has an independent process and there is a good news under difficult news story there. Very interesting, thank you both for your views and analysis there. You can follow more reaction and analysis on this story. You can follow more reaction and analysis to this story on the bbc news website and bbc news app where we have a breakdown of the recent indictment, as well as what this means for the charges in his other cases. Let as head back to lisbon. Pope francis has arrived in portugal for celebrations to mark World Youth Day a vatican endorsed International Festival. We are seeing live pictures in lisbon where the pope is attending a welcoming meeting with the portuguese president. But its likely his visit may be overshadowed by a recent official report detailing the sexual abuse of nearly 5000 children by portuguese clergy mainly priests over a seventy year period. Live now to Alison Roberts in lisbon. We are seeing that lovely welcome ceremony but in the backdrop, there are some serious allegations and a serious report that might overshadow this. ,. , , this. Yes, the pope is being welcomed this. Yes, the pope is being welcomed there this. Yes, the pope is being welcomed there by this. Yes, the pope is being welcomed there by the this. Yes, the pope is being welcomed there by the president who yesterday said that this was a Dream Come True for portugal to host this World Youth Day but as you said, in general, anything to do with the Catholic Church in portugal has been overshadowed by an independent report released in february after a year of work which found over a 17 year of work which found over a 17 year period, they extrapolated on the basis of victims and witnesses, more than a0,800 victims could be numbered. They say that does not exclude that i may have been more. Not only the fact there were victims according to the report but also the way the cases were handled at the time and indeed subsequently the reaction of the Church Leadership to that report, although they commissioned it was not seen as ideal. They asked about an apology they made about some of the wording. This is an issue pope francis has made a central issue to his papacy, repeatedly urging the leadership of church in various countries to get a grip on this problem. He will be meeting with victims in portugal while he is here but that meeting will be extremely discreet. According to the cardinal Patriarch Of Lisbon, the senior churchmen, even he did not know where it would be taking place. Even he did not know where it would be taking place be taking place. Yes, we understand he will be meeting be taking place. Yes, we understand he will be meeting some be taking place. Yes, we understand he will be meeting some of be taking place. Yes, we understand he will be meeting some of the he will be meeting some of the victims of this Child Sex Abuse Scandal but also, not only looking back, he wants to look forward, he has outlined potential reforms for the church . Has outlined potential reforms for the church . ,. The church . That is something which has been very the church . That is something which has been very characteristic the church . That is something which has been very characteristic of the church . That is something which has been very characteristic of his i has been very characteristic of his papacy. Not only outlining reforms but also asking National Churches to come up with their own suggestions for reform. But the portuguese church, although it is quite conservative, has put forward some strikingly liberal ones such as suggesting married men could be ordained priests and the church could do more to embrace different types of families so certainly in some parts of the church, francis will have support on those grounds. Thank you very much. Alice roberts reporting from lisbon. Thousands of Women In Africa will die in pregnancy and childbirth as a result of cuts to the uks overseas aid budget. The burden of debt Ratings Agency fitch lowers its top rating for the Us Government, warning its current debt level is too high. Starbucks shrugs off the cost of living crisis and reports a 12 jump in revenue. But Financial Markets arent impressed well tell you why. Welcome to World Business report. We start with a downgrade for the us. The Ratings Agency fitch has lowered its top rating in an unexpected blow to the worlds biggest economy. Fitch cut the us debt rating from aaa to aa , citing americas erosion of governance and rising deficits. The move comes two months after a last minute deal was reached to lift the debt ceiling and avert the countrys first ever default. Us treasury secretary janet yellen called the Downgrade Arbitrary and said Economic Conditions had improved under the biden administration. The news of the downgrade came after the close of trade on wall street, but in asia, investors have been pulling out of equities in reaction. Heres what markets look like right now in europe.
