On friday, the head of the president ial guards unit, general abdourahmane tchiani, declared himself nigers new leader saying insecurity, economic woes and corruption prompted him to seize power. The us, the eu, and france nigers former colonial ruler say they wont recognise the coup leaders, with some suspending Security Cooperation and budgetary aid. There are concerns among many countries over which states nigers new leader will align with potentially moving closer to russia as happened after coups in neighbouring burkina faso and mali. One thing, though, that ecowas leaders might be careful about is this time around, making a decision that may not alienate the people of niger and possibly push the country, the leadership, the Military Leadership, into the kind of new alliance with countries like russia. ,. Here in the uk, the prime minister, rishi sunak, has ordered the Department For Transport to review existing so called low traffic Neighbourhood Schemes which seek to reduce the numbers of cars using streets in some residential areas. Mr sunak told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper he wanted to show drivers that he was on their side. Here s our political correspondent, damian grammaticas. . Low traffic neighbourhoods, loved by some, loathed by others. They use barriers, bollards and Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras to control or limit access to some streets. Theyve been set up in recent years in london, bristol, birmingham, bournemouth and more cities with tens of millions of pounds of government funding. The aim to keep through traffic away from residential streets, lower average speeds, improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions. In some places, tempers have flared between drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. At least one Opinion Survey commissioned by the government has shown broad support in areas where theyve been put in place, but some motorists and businesses are opposed. Earlier this month, the Transport Secretary said he was halting funding for any new schemes in england. Now rishi sunak has ordered a review into how existing ones are working. Mr sunak told the Sunday Telegraph. The vast majority of people in the country use their cars to get around and are dependent on their cars, adding, i just want to make sure people know that im on their side in supporting them to use their cars. It comes after mr sunak s conservatives retained the parliamentary seat of uxbridge and South Ruislip in west london on the back of a campaign focused on opposition to the expansion of londons ulez Charging Zone for older polluting vehicles. The labour mayor of london, sadiq khan, is pressing ahead with that after a legal challenge brought by some conservative councils failed this week. He says its important to clean up londons air and tackle the climate crisis. Hes promised to look at new ideas to help people meet the costs. After uxbridge, rishi sunak appears to have identified car owners as a target for conservative policies. But its not clear what effect his review of low Traffic Schemes will have. Government sources could not say whether local councils could be forced to remove any already in place. Damian grammaticas, bbc news. They only needed one goal, that was the difference between them staying and leaving the tournament today and it was that goal that eluded them throughout the whole match. There were chances, the ball hit the post, another the ball went into the hands of the switzerland goalkeeper and many more. The crowd was excited, they were supportive, nervous and in they were supportive, nervous and in the end, they were frustrated and disappointed but they never lost the support for new zealand. Bring us up to speed. England Play Theirfinal bring us up to speed. England play their final group bring us up to speed. England Play Theirfinal group game in the match against china on tuesday but they are going to have to do it without one of their probable players, keira walsh. It was confirmed by the faa she has injured her knee and she did that during the previous match against denmark on friday. We saw her go down, everyone s heart were sent their mounts, she is a creative midfielder and the linchpin of the england squad. During the euros which england won last summer she was seen to be one of the most important players for the tournament, making creative passes and making opportunities for girls. It has been confirmed she has not torn her acl, which would have been the worst scenario but she has injured it and she will not be available for the china game on tuesday. That will be difficult for england. We were speaking earlier to rachel daly, one of the team mates of keira walsh and she said walsh is disappointed but as a squad they are resilient and she was asked how the squad would deal without keira walsh in line up because she is seen to be irreplaceable and rachel daly said she did not feel that was the case, they had a plan b for different scenarios but the thing is england have been ravaged by injuries and before a ball was kicked at this tournament they lost three key players, fran kirby in midfield, Leah Williamson their captain in defence, and beth mead, their Star Striker Up Front and now they have lost another Midfield Player so it will be tough, especially if keira walsh does not recover for the remainder of the tournament. Also a scenario that if england lose this match against denmark, that denmark, china and england all finish the group on six points and then it will come down to Goal Difference as to who gets through to the Knockout Stages of the tournament and nobody really wants to see that because if it comes down to Goal Difference not many of those teams have scored a lot of goals. England have only scored two in their opening two matches and after that, it starts to get crazy with how they determine who gets through. We were speaking to rachel daly about that, she said at the moment they have two more goals than a couple of the other team so she did not see that as a problem but it do something they are aware of and it has crossed their minds will england know on tuesday they will have to beat denmark and they will have to beat denmark and they will have to beat denmark and they will have to do it by scoring quite some goals they will have to do it by scoring quite some goals morocco defender Nouhaila Benzina has made history by becoming the first player to wear a hijab at a world cup. The 25 year old wore the Islamic Headscarf as she made her first appearance at the tournament in her sides 1 0 win over south korea. The wearing of head coverings for religious reasons was authorised by fifa in 2014. Benzina, who plays her Club Football in morocco, is the first player to wear a hijab at a senior Womens International tournament. New figures from the indian government, show the estimated wild Tiger Population in the country is growing by more than 6 a year. India is home to about three quarters of the worlds wild tigers. In 2018, the estimated population was nearly 3,000. Sam harrison reports. An iconic mountain nation nestled in the himalayas. Bhutan s landscape is both brutal and serene, and in the shadow of some of the worlds highest peaks, something is stirring. This remarkable camera trap footage, proof that tigers are making a comeback here. Global Tiger Populations fell by 95 over the past century, but in this tiny himalayan kingdom, theyre finally rising again. Its now home to at least 131 tigers, an increase of 27 since 2015. In bhutan s capital, the key message was that this number isjust the beginning. Let this tiger report be a Beacon Of Hope in a call to action. Let it inspire everyone to redouble the commitment and Channel Resources towards protecting wildlife in natural ecosystem. Lets keep the momentum going stronger hereafter. Momentum is indeed crucial, as shown in nearby nepal, where continuing efforts to improve habitats have helped Tiger Numbers double in the country over the last decade. This latest research in bhutan shows that it too can help regional populations, and its hoped the tiger s presence there will attract more conservation projects. When somebody wants to give funding for large scale forest or ecosystem conservation, pick an area that has tigers. Pick an area that has its large carnivores because thats a functioning ecosystem. Not all forest is the same. Biodiversity is not evenly distributed around this planet. Bhutan is blessed in many ways. The path to restore Tiger Populations to where they were a century ago is long. But these rare images show that The Tide Is Turning and prove that even in some of the worlds harshest and highest environments, this iconic creature can thrive once again. Sam harrison, bbc news. Its been a promising start to the day across many parts of the country, with some sunshine, a few showers around too. But if we look out in the atlantic, this Weather System is pushing in the cloud, and thats going to be bringing some rain to some parts of the country. Around that first area of low pressure, weve had the showers swirling across scotland and northern england. The worst of those are moving away. So fewer showers and still some sunshine into the afternoon, but wetter weather is arriving in the South West Of England and wales, pushing into Northern Ireland, towards the midlands and also across to the south east of england. And it could be quite windy, actually, for the time of year across england and wales. Lighter winds for scotland and Northern Ireland. And in the sunshine in scotland, it shouldnt feel too bad. Highest temperatures in eastern england, ahead of that rain. But it looks like that rain is going to be heading towards the oval. The Morning Session sees the best of the weather. If we dont get the rain in the afternoon session, its certainly going to be arriving after tea. That steadier rain pushing its way across more of england and wales and Northern Ireland Late Afternoon and into the evening. And that wet weather continues to journey northwards into parts of scotland. Further south, the rain does ease off later on in the night, but we keep a lot of cloud, so its going to be a warm start to monday. Northernmost parts of scotland a little chillier, with the clearer skies, but the promise of some early sunshine to start the new week. But the weather is going to be driven by that area of low pressure thats focusing most of the rain. We still have that weather front, though, sitting through the english channel. So cloud and rain here, moving on to the south coast at times, threatening the south east of england. The rain affects more of scotland through the day, and it gets wetter again across Northern Ireland, northern parts of england and wales. But further south, maybe a slice of something a bit drier, and eventually brighter, with some sunshine. But as you can see, its not particularly warm for this time of the year once again. Low pressure continues to drive in across the uk and its pushed in on these upper winds. This is the jet stream, and with the jet to the south of the uk, were in cooler air. As one area of low pressure gets moved away, another one comes in as we arrive into wednesday. That will bring some wet weather, especially across england and wales. And the start of august isnt really going to get any warmer because, as the rain clears away later in the week, we end up with a northerly breeze. This is bbc news.
