Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me arejohn stevens, the deputy Political Editor of the daily mail, and author and journalist, rachel shabi. Hello and welcome back to both of you. Lets take our viewers through the front pages first off. Starting with the daily mirror. Their front page says that Vaccine Passports could allow lockdown weary brits to go abroad on holiday this summer. The Daily Express carries a similiary story, with the headline here we go. Apparently popular Summer Destinations such as greece and spain are ready to welcome back brits to their shores. The daily mail carries a headline about what it calls the shocking state of the uk army. According to the paper, all but one Infantry Batallion is short of soldiers. According to the Daily Telegraph, pubs will reopen in april, but only if they agree not to sell alcohol. The i says that the uks on track to vaccinate every adult in byjune, and that confidence is growing in the british vaccine team. The Financial Times says that the chancellor is set to extend the time period needed to pay back bounceback loans to help stave off business failures. Meanwhile, the times has an exclusive claiming ministers are aiming to take back control over the nhs in the Biggest Health reform in over a decade. Finally, the daily star asks, is this the best Parish Council meeting in the world ever . Referring of course to Jackie Weavers new found fame and that handforth Parish Council zoom meeting thats gone viral. Hopefully we will come to that with my guests this evening. Lets start off, john, youll start us off with the front page of the Daily Telegraph, and the story that we could see pubs opening . Yes. Telegraph, and the story that we could see pubs opening . Yes, around the 22nd, boris could see pubs opening . Yes, around the 22nd, Boris Johnson could see pubs opening . Yes, around the 22nd, Boris Johnson will could see pubs opening . Yes, around the 22nd, Boris Johnson will set could see pubs opening . Yes, around the 22nd, Boris Johnson Will Set Out L the 22nd, borisjohnson will set out his plans for ending lockdown. I think in a couple of weeks, we will see a lot of speculation before then about what may or may not be in that plan. The Daily Telegraph is claiming that one of the ideas talk about is possibly saying to pubs that they can open but they wont be able to sell alcohol. I just dont think thats likely to actually happen. I think a lot of pubs have really suffered over the last few months, a lot of pub owners might just barely be hanging in there, not knowing whether theyll carry on or not. In the Idea Thatjohnson will tell them they wont be able to sell alcohol most places would think thats a totaljoke and i cant see the Prime Minister doing it. Where i think its possible as restaurants, the idea that a restaurant might be able to open up and serve meals without being served wine or beer. I think that is something they might possibly think about. But one of the things that makes bigger profits for at restaurants is alcohol, so lots of them might say this isnt that great if they are able to open but not sell booze. I great if they are able to open but not sell booze. Not sell booze. I suppose many eole not sell booze. I suppose many peeple will not sell booze. I suppose many peeple will say. Not sell booze. I suppose many people will say, you not sell booze. I suppose many people will say, you know not sell booze. I suppose many. People will say, you know what . Not sell booze. I suppose many people will say, you know what . Its just not worth the risk. Look what happened over christmas, why risk it until much later in the year when the Vaccination Programme is far more advanced . Why bother . I think thats right. More advanced . Why bother . I think thats right. And more advanced . Why bother . I think thats right, and i more advanced . Why bother . I think thats right, and i think more advanced . Why bother . I think thats right, and i think were thats right, and i think were seeing thats right, and i think were seeing a thats right, and i think were seeing a lot of perhaps premature conversation about the easing of the lockdowrx conversation about the easing of the lockdown. And i think a lot of that is down lockdown. And i think a lot of that is down to lockdown. And i think a lot of that is down to the internal divisions in the government itself. Borisjohnson is facing the government itself. Borisjohnson is facing plenty of his own backbenchers and some ministers who want to backbenchers and some ministers who want to ease the lockdown earlier than the want to ease the lockdown earlier than the scientific advisers are saying than the scientific advisers are saying is than the scientific advisers are saying is recommended. In the last thing saying is recommended. In the last thing we saying is recommended. In the last thing we want to see is to ease things thing we want to see is to ease things too thing we want to see is to ease things too soon, then be forced into another things too soon, then be forced into another lockdown. The other component of all this is that i think component of all this is that i think we component of all this is that i think we can all agree that schools need think we can all agree that schools need to think we can all agree that schools need to be think we can all agree that schools need to be the first thing to reopen, need to be the first thing to reopen, and it might be the case that other reopen, and it might be the case that other things need to stay shut in order that other things need to stay shut in order for that other things need to stay shut in order for that to happen. And yet i su ose in order for that to happen. And yet i sunpose the in order for that to happen. And yet i suppose the hospitality in order for that to happen. And yet i suppose the Hospitality Industry i i suppose the Hospitality Industry is desperate to get going again, and we have now learned just how much it is worth to the british economy, as well, havent we . Is worth to the british economy, as well, havent we . Yes, and i would auree well, havent we . Yes, and i would agree with well, havent we . Yes, and i would agree with rachel well, havent we . Yes, and i would agree with rachel that well, havent we . Yes, and i would agree with rachel that we well, havent we . Yes, and i would agree with rachel that we dont well, havent we . Yes, and i would i agree with rachel that we dont want to open things up then find there is a rise in cases and have to close them back down again. We want this to be the last lockdown. However, i think for lots of businesses struggling at the moment, they need some hope, and the Prime Minister needs later this month to set up a realistic plan did not open things soon, but to say, realistically speaking to the sciences, i think this is where well be in one months time and this is where we will be in two months time. Month s time and this is where we will be in two months time. Lots of Business Owners would welcome that. I don t know for talking about risk here, but if we turn to the front page of the daily mirror, would you risk going abroad if you had a Vaccine Passport . Risk going abroad if you had a Vaccine Passport . First of all, i think the idea Vaccine Passport . First of all, i think the idea of Vaccine Passport . First of all, i think the idea of the Vaccine Passport . First of all, i think the idea of the vaccine i think the idea of the Vaccine Passports has a sort of unfairness embedded within it. Because by the time we embedded within it. Because by the time we are looking at summer holidays, time we are looking at summer holidays, were still going to have most holidays, were still going to have most people under 50 most likely not vaccinated most people under 50 most likely not vaccinated. So we are setting up a division vaccinated. So we are setting up a division where elderly people can go off on division where elderly people can go off on holiday where younger people are potentially still stuck at home, which are potentially still stuck at home, which i are potentially still stuck at home, which i dont think is a particularly socially healthy thing to do particularly socially healthy thing to do to particularly socially healthy thing to do to begin with. But also to wonder to do to begin with. But also to wonder how many people are honestly looking wonder how many people are honestly looking wonder how many people are honestly looking of wonder how many people are honestly looking of course we all want to have looking of course we all want to have a looking of course we all want to have a summer holiday, but how many people have a summer holiday, but how many people are have a summer holiday, but how many people are looking at the idea of booking people are looking at the idea of booking that for this summer overseas, booking that for this summer overseas, knowing that the likelihood of it is still so uncertain . Likelihood of it is still so uncertain . , , likelihood of it is still so uncertain . , likelihood of it is still so uncertain . , ,. , uncertain . British summers are still all riaht at uncertain . British summers are still all right at the uncertain . British summers are still all right at the moment, uncertain . British summers are still all right at the moment, arent all right at the moment, aren t they, john . I all right at the moment, arent they. John . They, john . I think britain is a lovely country. They, john . I think britain is a lovely country, i they, john . I think britain is a lovely country, i would they, john . I think britain is a lovely country, i would recommend cornwall for holiday, but i think british weather is quite unpredictable, as we are about to come to in a moment. At this idea that holidays are all about relaxing, you want to switch off from work forget about all your worries, so the idea of booking an expensive holiday, than for the next few months worrying if you ll have both your jabs few months worrying if you ll have both yourjabs in time, what will be the latest rules for the air corridors, will i have to isolate in a hotel for ten days when i get back to the country . That s not relaxing at all, that s the Polar Opposite of relaxing. At all, thats the Polar Opposite of relaxinu. , relaxing. Rachel, we could well see the end of handsoff relaxing. Rachel, we could well see the end of handsoff managementl relaxing. Rachel, we could well see i the end of handsoff management of the end of hands off management of the end of hands off management of the nhs. The end of handsoff management of the nhs. ,. ,. , y the end of handsoff management of thenhs. ,. ,. ,. The nhs. This is a worrying story because it the nhs. This is a worrying story because it looks the nhs. This is a worrying story because it looks like the nhs. This is a worrying story because it looks like the the nhs. This is a worrying story because it looks like the government is planning because it looks like the government is planning on using, under the guise is planning on using, under the guise of is planning on using, under the guise of the covid 19 pandemic, it will claw guise of the covid 19 pandemic, it will claw control over the nhs. So much will claw control over the nhs. So much more will claw control over the nhs. So much more ministerial control, the health much more ministerial control, the Health Ministry in particular to force Health Ministry in particular to force through things that it wants to see force through things that it wants to see happen. Now its worth pointing to see happen. Now its worth pointing out that the bits that the government did have control over during government did have control over during the government did have control over during the pandemic or the bits they actually during the pandemic or the bits they actually took control over, test and trace. Actually took control over, test and trace. Were actually took control over, test and trace, were a terrible failure. It cost trace, were a terrible failure. It cost billions of pounds in outsourcing and the companies that were outsourced to do it didnt know what they were outsourced to do it didnt know what they were doing and bungled and botched what they were doing and bungled and botched it. What they were doing and bungled and botched it, a vital part of our pandemic botched it, a vital part of our pandemic response. So it troubles me the government is looking at seizing more the government is looking at seizing more control and, from what we can see of more control and, from what we can see of the more control and, from what we can see of the proposals, there is very little see of the proposals, there is very little addressing the things that actually little addressing the things that actually do need to be addressed within actually do need to be addressed within the nhs, which is notably staffing within the nhs, which is notably staffing. Its Massively Understaffed at the moment, funding, Massively Understaffed at the moment, funding, massively underfunded, and just creating massively underfunded, and just creating more capacity in the service creating more capacity in the service. These are not things that are addressed in these plans. Let s are addressed in these plans. Lets turn to your are addressed in these plans. Lets turn to your paper, are addressed in these plans. Lets turn to your paper, john. Are addressed in these plans. Let s turn to your paper, john. The first of two stories. The first is concerning the british army . This is a sto b concerning the british army . This is a story by my concerning the british army . This is a story by my colleague concerning the british army . This is a story by my colleague about concerning the british army . This is a story by my colleague about how. A story by my colleague about how all but one of the army s infantry battalions are short of battle ready troops. And we are coming up to, in the next couple of weeks, we will see the integrated review where the government will set out its priorities and where they ll be spending money. And it seems quite likely that they ll have to get rid of some of these battalions, because they ve got so few soldiers, it s just not working out you ll have to lower the number. But one of the things competing for ministers is how do you spend that defence it . That government has increased how much they ll spend on the military dashed defence budget. But you have the question, do you spend that on dealing with new capabilities like cyber warfare and protecting satellites in space . Or do you look at traditional forms of spending money on soldiers, Army Equipment . We have to look at the next few years, the big threats are run and dashed russia and china, how best to we tackle them . We tackle them . Rachel, your thou~hts we tackle them . One of the things that came up in that intrigued you. One of the things that came up in this i that intrigued you. One of the things that came up in this report was that things that came up in this report was that there is a manpower crisis, according was that there is a manpower crisis, according to was that there is a manpower crisis, according to this report, and its based according to this report, and its based on according to this report, and its based on years of poor paying positions based on years of poor paying positions but also outsourcing will stop so positions but also outsourcing will Stop So Recruitment was contracted to the Stop So Recruitment was contracted to the private firm capita to the tune to the private firm capita to the tune of to the private firm capita to the tune of {1. 3 billion. But apparently the army tune of {1. 3 billion. But apparently the army has responded to this daily mail article, the army has responded to this daily mailarticle, saying the army has responded to this daily mail article, saying we dont have a recruitment mail article, saying we dont have a recruitment crisis, this is all speculation, and actually we are on target speculation, and actually we are on target in speculation, and actually we are on target in terms of the amount of recruits target in terms of the amount of recruits that we have. The army retrieved its recruitment for 2020. We are confident the army has the numbers and talent required to protect the united kingdom. The integrated review is not yet complete and any report of the Army Force Structure is merely speculation. That was the response from that story in the daily mail. Let s move to the second daily mail story. I m fascinated by this, john. There is a secret plan to send Prince Edward to edinburgh . Number ten over the Prince Edward to edinburgh . Number ten over the last Prince Edward to edinburgh . Number ten over the last two Prince Edward to edinburgh . Number ten over the last two months Prince Edward to edinburgh . Number ten over the last two months have. Ten over the last two months have been thinking about, how do we deal with the threat of Scottish Independence . What are the Different Things we can do to strengthen the bond between england and scotland, and the other nations of the uk . And one of the plans that was discussed in downing street, ifound out, was the possibility of sending Prince Edward and sophie asking if they d be willing to move to edinburgh, set p be willing to move to edinburgh, set up full time residence at the palace in hollyrood and be the face of The Royal Family in scotland, in hollyrood and be the face of the royalfamily in scotland, up in hollyrood and be the face of The Royal Family in scotland, up the number of engagements at the border and build the ties between the two countries. But borisjohnson has a problem. Nicola sturgeon is soaring in opinion poll ratings, it looks quite likely that in may, the snp will get the majority of scottish parliament, and she has said she will ask for another referendum. Boris has a problem, how do you deal with that . He could refuse that and say he won t give that to her, saying you ve had the referendum in 2014. That could possibly lead to a rise in support for independence. I think one of the particular problems for number ten is you look at things like the brexit referendum they relied the campaign on the economic argument but they neglected the emotional argument. Argument but they neglected the emotionalargument. So argument but they neglected the emotional argument. So the government is keen not to make that mistake again. The idea of sending Prince Edward to scotland won t be the idea that saves the union. What are your the idea that saves the union. What are ou. , i the idea that saves the union. What are you i dontl are your thoughts, rachel . I dont think the thing are your thoughts, rachel . I dont think the thing thats are your thoughts, rachel . I dont think the thing thats driving think the thing thats driving scottish think the thing thats driving Scottish Independence is the idea that the Scottish Independence is the idea that The Royal Family doesnt spend enough that The Royal Family doesnt spend enough time in scotland. Its more like things enough time in scotland. Its more like things like breaks it, which scotland like things like breaks it, which scotland did not vote for brexit, austerity scotland did not vote for brexit, austerity and other things driven by westminster, of which scotland doesnt westminster, of which scotland doesnt necessarily want to go in that direction. England Captainjoe Root will be looking to build on his unbeaten 128 when the second day starts in the first test between india and england in chennai tomorrow. Root became the third englishman to score a 100 in his 100th test as his side built up a promising 263 3. Andy swiss was watching. 100 in his 100th test match what a player if sport is all about timing, well, itjust doesn t get better than this. Forjoe root, an unforgettable finale to an unforgettable day. He d begun it celebrating a different century, his 100th test cap. But if that was sparkling, it was nothing to what followed. Under the hot chennai sunshine, his team wobbled at first. Rory burns succumbing to a rush of blood. And its a first wicket down for england. And when dan lawrence quickly followed, india were proving just why they re among the world s best. Enter root, though, with remarkable results. Class pure class. After 100s in his previous two tests, a hat trick was clearly in his sights. At the other end, he found the perfect partner dom sibley reaching a gritty half century, but he was soon being overshadowed by his skipper. On current form, root seems in a class on his own and the outcome was inevitable. A stunning century and a stunning smile to match. A stunning century and a smile to match. Only the third englishman 200 and his Hundredth Appearance some things are meant to be. From there, he piled on the agony although notjust for india. A six and spot of cramp but even that could not stop him. Just befor ethe close, india did trap sibley for 87, but root is still there. It was england s day but above all, it was his.
