Good afternoon and welcome to the news at one. Scientists are investigating whether giving people different covid vaccines for their first and second doses would work as well as using the same kind ofjab twice. It is thought it could give more flexibility should there be disruption to supplies, and may even offer Greater Protection against the virus. The results will not be available until the summer, so there is no change to the Vaccine Programme yet stop this fire station in hampshire is the latest venue to become part of the latest venue to become part of the vaccine roll out, one of thousands of sites operating across the uk. More than ten Million People have had theirfirst the uk. More than ten Million People have had their firstjabs, the uk. More than ten Million People have had theirfirstjabs, but the uk. More than ten Million People have had their firstjabs, but a the uk. More than ten Million People have had theirfirstjabs, but a new study aims to find out if mixing doses of the Oxford Astrazeneca and Pfizer Biontech vaccines could offer the body even more chances to develop defences against the virus. What we are doing is seeing how well peoples Immune Systems respond if you give the first dose of one vaccine on the second dose of another. The reason to do that is to build flexibility into the uk Immunisation Schedule for vaccines. And even globally, it makes it much easier to administer the vaccines if we dont have to worry too much about always giving the second dose the same as the first dose. The trial will mix the same as the first dose. The trial will mix doses the same as the first dose. The trial will mix doses from the two vaccine is currently being used. But others could be added as they are approved. The study will involve 820 volunteers, none of whom have yet had the vaccine. All will be aged 50 or older, part of the group to be vaccinated in the next priority wave. The trial will run initially at eight sites across england. Tackling outbreaks of ebola is one reason they think it might work. Mixing vaccines was used successfully against this virus. A second boosterjab that uses another way of prompting an immune response can be more effective than two jabs from the same vaccine, and it is already in use with the many inoculations we are aware of. It is something inoculations we are aware of. It is something that inoculations we are aware of. It is something that is inoculations we are aware of. It 3 something that is done historically with vaccines or hepatitis, childrens vaccines, polio, measles, mumps and rubella. It will hopefully maintain the uk at the Forefront In Research Into Covid vaccines. We are proud of our record on the Vaccine Task Force on the deployment programme. But this is another part of the armoury. Programme. But this is another part of the amount of the armoury. Given the erratic nature of vaccine of the armoury. Given the erratic nature of vaccine supply, of the armoury. Given the erratic. Nature of vaccine supply, described by ministers as lumpy, a degree of flexibility in the Vaccination Programme could be a real help in the months to come. But perhaps the biggest benefit will be for those developing countries that have yet to get Vaccination Programmes up and running. Being able to mix and match supplies could make all the difference. The first results of this trial should be known by the early summer. Dominic hughes, bbc news. Lets talk more about this with fergus walsh. Is this trial really important . I fergus walsh. Because this could be of practical help, both in the uk and elsewhere, where you could see potentially disruption in supplies of vaccine, and people coming along now will have the same type of vaccine they had when they had their booster, as their first dose. It later in the year, if we get disruption in supply, it would be really useful if you could swap around the vaccines. But really interesting for science as well. Because the pfizer and astrazeneca vaccines both target the spike protein, to get the Immune System to target that. But they do it in very different ways. They are differently designed vaccines. And really, its interesting to see whether mixing those vaccines may actually give a better overall immune response. And its not only going to be done in england, where this trial is due to start soon, astrazeneca is also talking to the scientists in russia who developed the sputnik vaccine, which released results, very impressive results, earlier this week. The Prime Minister said last month that people coming from this country from 19 hotspots would have to quarantine in hotels, but no start date has been set. More than a week after it was announced, there are still no published plans on Quarantine Hotels and some hoteliers are getting frustrated. I think in my company, if we went and announced something nationally and we hadnt thought about how we were going to deliver that, and we hadnt engaged with the people who would actually have to deliver that, then im not sure i would even be in a job. Yesterday, the Prime Minister had said plans would be announced today. Number 10 said the Prime Minister had been misinformed. The announcement was always going to be made when the operation of the Hotel Quarantine was ready and it was with, i think the Prime Minister was saying within days, but. No, he said it would be today. Well, my understanding is that it was always going to be within the next few days. The governments policy only applies to arrivals from 33 high risk countries. Labour wants that applied to every country and are calling for a wider plan, fast. We are in a race iiow. Virus against vaccination. Lets secure our borders while we carry out the vaccination process. The uk could use elements of other Quarantine Hotel systems in other countries, like australia and new zealand. But there are other options to consider. Airports, airlines and hotels still have a lot of questions about how this is going to work. They range from the practical side, like whether guests can go out for managed exercise, down to safety and security questions, like whether passengers from high and low risk countries should be travelling together on the same flight or kept together at terminals. If you look at the australian model, there is Perimeter Fencing. Do we need to put up Perimeter Fencing . What sort of Air Ventilation is required . Who would supply security . Is it us . Weve got that available, but is that us or is it a Third Party Contractor . What if somebody breaches those rules, someone leaves the room, are we to fine them . Can they have outside phone calls . Just so many questions that really need to be answered. Creating managed quarantine is complicated and none of those involved want the system to be poorly thought through. But with the policy already announced and likely to dissuade travellers from booking far ahead, the industry says it needs answers for how this is going to work. Caroline davies, bbc news. One of the scientists that sits on the governments Advisory Group sage says he expects theyll be a phased opening up as the Vaccinations Levels increase with life more or less back to normal for the summer. Lets take a look at the key dates over the next few weeks. By 15th february, the government aims to have vaccinated everyone in the first four priority groups thats care home residents, front line health staff, everybody over the age of 70 and people who are clinically extremely vulnerable. On 22nd of february, the Prime Minister will set out a roadmap for how the government intends to ease restrictions in england. Schools would be the first to open to all pupils the government say that will happen on 8th of march at the earliest, in england. Schools may open earlier in wales scotland with a possible phased reopening from the 22nd february. Lets speak to our Political Correspondent nick eardley whos in westminster. Data coming out all the time. We talk about the vaccines. How much is all of this Putting Pressure on the Prime Minister over this issue of Easing Lockdown . Well, we have perhaps heard less from Easing Lockdown . Well, we have perhaps heard less from some i Easing Lockdown . Well, we have| perhaps heard less from some of those in borisjohnsons party who want him to move more swiftly over the last few weeks, just because the data was so bad. But as the number of cases comes down, as the vaccine roll out continues to go pretty well, there are those influential backbenchers in borisjohnsons party who are increasingly knocking on his door and saying, we need to think about trying to get part of society open again. They are looking, for example, to the announcement in scotland, seeing the possibility of schools opening there on the 22nd of february, as a way that england could look to accelerate things a bit, potentially with a similar sort of aspiration. Ive got to say, i dont think number 10 is ive got to say, i dont Think Numberio is in ive got to say, i dont think number 10 is in that place at the moment. I think they are being very cautious. We heard the Prime Minister being very cautious in the downing street briefing last night. And i think in part that is due to the fact they dont want to open things up and closed them again. Some have been really stung by what happened over the christmas period, and the perception they were doing u turns on what could and couldnt open. Its also worth bearing in mind there are still those fears about variants coming into the country from other parts of the world. That is why the Quarantine Process is being strengthened in the next few weeks. It feels like we have been talking about it for ages. We are told that it will be next week when we finally get details of how that looks, and there have been some operational challenges to getting that done. So, if you look at what happened to gross domestic product, thatis happened to gross domestic product, that is a measure of the size of the economy, everything we produce, every haircut, every bus ride, every car that is made, that shrank by 8 in 2020. But it could have been worse. At one point, the bank was saying it could be more like i2 . In the Fourth Quarter of the year there was actually slight growth, in spite of the tiered restrictions that were introduced. However, the banker saying that in the First Quarter of this year they are expecting the economy to shrink by 4 . If you add those together, the 4 shrinkage we are about to get on the 8 we have had, that means a 12 drop from peak to trough. That is nearly twice as bad as the financial crisis. So it is a really steep drop. On other hand, with the Bank Of England is saying is that when the Vaccination Programme starts taking effect over the coming year, the economy should get a big boost from that. So even though unemployment will rise, and quite seriously, up to close to 8 , about 2. 5 Million People, it should come down again as the economy continues to grow. The pandemic has resulted in thousands of people having their scans or treatment for cancer delayed. Charities warn that in some cases the disease will have progressed while people were waiting to be seen and that emotional support is vital for those patients. Jayne mccubbin has been speaking to one woman whos been helped by a charity. On february the 6th, 2020, minna and kavi were married. A month later she was due to have potentially life saving surgery for pancreatic cancer. But this was the news on february the 6th. A third person has tested positive for coronavirus here in the uk. The virus had started to spread across the country and the impact on Cancer Services was devastating. Everything was good to go, and then coronavirus. Minnas surgery was cancelled. So then when i went back in april, the tumour had started growing and it was too late to do the procedure any more. Minna speaks to me from her bed at home, where her cancer journey is near its end. People suffer in silence. They dont know how much help there is. And what kind of help there is. In lockdown, facing a terminal diagnosis, she says her impossible situation was made bearable by one woman. And it was like, you know when they say sometimes it was meant to be . Basically, because my mum had passed in 2017 with cancer, i wanted to give something back. Let me just feel how i feel. You know . You know, let me tell you exactly how i feel without you telling me that i need to be strong. And she was there for that. You must think of her, i guess, often . Oh, yeah, absolutely. Up to today i didnt know what had happened since my last conversation with her. She is really, really, really, really poorly at the moment. But she did record a message with me to give to you. Can i show it to you . Yeah, id love to see it, yeah. That would be brilliant. Let me get it. From the bottom of my heart, julie, your kindness and your caring, and yourjoy. Your way of seeing life, that carried me through. That carried me through. The arrangement is due to end next month, but mps and Charities Say removing the top up will push more people toward poverty, leaving them reliant on food banks. Alex forsyth reports. Letsjust double check so we see what you need to do to write your poem. Like many parents, jess is embroiled in the home school struggle. Sometimes we have to do things we dont like, ollie. She is a single mum to eight year old oliver. Moneys always been tight but through the pandemic she says its been worse. Being at home has pushed bills up and without a car, shopping locally can be pricey. Although our cupboards are full, our fridge is a bit empty and this is the week where we dont really have much fresh stuff in because its bill week. Jess works in a supermarket but also relies on universal credit. The government put that up by £20 a week at the start of the pandemic to help those likejess, whos had to make some tough choices. Ive had to scrape together food from the tins. I have had to go to the food bank. I always make sure oliver has got everything he needs and id go without. There have been times when i have struggled, i have had to phone up the Utility Company and be, like, can i a set up a payment plan to pay off this months bill . Because ijust dont have the money. Getting out and playing hockey has been a lifeline for oliver and jess. And, with support from a charity, she has worked hard to improve her finances. The extra universal credit has helped and she is hopeful things will get easier. The one thing i have always been worried about is, am i doing the right thing for him . Hopefully he learns the value of hard work. Well get there eventually, i think. There has been a heavy economic price to this pandemic. Its obvious in any high street. The government has put billions into supporting businesses and individuals and says it is committed to helping the lowest paid families pointing to increases in welfare and grants for things like food and bills. But it is being urged to make a decision on the extra income many of those struggling have come to rely on. The government is under some pressure to keep that increased rate of universal credit. If it does, that means a pretty big bill for the treasury, about £6 billion. At the moment, the chancellor is working out his budget and the government says part of that process is looking at the state of the pandemic and the state of public finances and working out the best way to support people. My children will never know that i struggle. Know that i worry because ill always be daddy for them. For anthony, the extra £20 a week has been a lifeline. Hes a single dad of two, including to three year old florence and he says any drop in income would be a real struggle. As a household, if we were to have the hit like that, we are going to have to be constantly at the food bank, were going to have to ask for assistance for bills. Its difficult for everybody at the moment. So we have to make do. And universal credit makes us just make do. The governments yet to decide whether to keep the increased rate. Theres no escaping the impact of this pandemic on public and personal finances. Anthony has had support from the Christians Against Poverty charity, which he says has been invaluable. There are places out there. But sometimes you dont feel you can reach out to those places because youre embarrassed, because yoare exhausted. And i have to say, do it, because its the best thing that i did and the only way that we can move forward is moving forward together. Alex forsyth, bbc news. The Irish Government has warned that a key part of the brexit deal will not be scrapped, despite problems with goods moving between britain and Northern Ireland. Physical inspections and paperwork are required under whats called the Northern Ireland protocol but businesses complain its added costs and red tape. Emma vardy reports. All these beds, theyre all sitting empty. This time of year, we have all our plants coming in from england, from europe, and they are all sitting empty. We dont know what were going to do. How does your garden grow . Well, in Northern Ireland right now, you might be suffering a few bare patches because some horticultural businesses in Great Britain have stopped sending plants and seeds over the irish sea. The gardeners we worked with. Varieties of lettuce, cabbage and tomatoes. They are all banned from coming into the country. So we are now going to have to try and look to europe to see if we can get something similar. Its happening because in order to avoid checks at the land border on the island of ireland, the Brexit Agreement with the eu included a compromise, which means Northern Ireland continues to follow some eu rules unlike the rest of the uk. Plants are just one of many types of goods that now needs new documentation in order to be sent from britain to Northern Ireland. Borisjohnson previously played down the idea that there would ever be a new trade border in the irish sea. But now the rules are a reality, its affecting lots of everyday products, especially shipments of food. And the red tape is set to increase in april, when the grace period comes to end. The government is asking the eu to push back the deadline by nearly two years. Sinn fein and the Irish Government believes the problems could be worked out, but Northern Irelands democratic unionists want the arrangement scrapped entirely. Its an absolute disgrace and a disaster. I think the British Government now have a duty to protect the tax paying citizens of the United Kingdom who live in Northern Ireland. The issues divide communities here and continue to be one of the most difficult issues over brexit to resolve. Emma vardy, bbc news. Political bodies are not allowed to broadcast in the uk and ofcom, the regulator, had said to the China Global Television network that it needed to prove it was editorially independent of the Chinese Communist party. It gave it a couple of chances to do that and they fail. Ofcom put out a statement saying the licence was going to be revoked this morning. Confusingly about a0 minutes after that Chinas Foreign Ministry repeated the demand it first seems to have made a few days or weeks ago that the bbc apologised for its coverage of the pandemic in wuhan, they said we need an apology and this is politically motivated. Some well informed soul says that seems to have been genuinely coincidental rather than a retaliation for what ofcom did but china has separately complained about the coverage of the Uighur Muslims and how weve covered them. The reason it matters this in recent years state broadcasters have become very important to various countries as a tool of soft power and propaganda. There is a broader tech cold war going on between china and the west about how open the internet should be and Once Upon A Time global conflicts were about land and Natural Resources and today, they mostly seem to be about information instead. . ,. ,. ,. , organisers of the Australian Open insist the tournament will go ahead, despite more than 500 players and support staff going into isolation after a worker at one of the Quarantine Hotels caught coronavirus. Shaimaa khalil reports from Melbourne Park. They were meant to be on the Tennis Courts getting ready for the first grand slam of the year. Instead, this is how hundreds of players and officials have spent their day. They will need a negative Coronavirus Test before they can get back to the competition. Health officials are optimistic. If there was an exposure, they would be coming up to that time period now, so we think that risk is relatively low, which is why we are just testing them to be sure, but its precautionary. A worker in one of the events Quarantine Hotels tested positive for covid 19. That was enough for Melbourne Park to close its doors and for six warm up events, with some of the top names in the sport, to be cancelled. This is yet another blow to the Australian Open and its hugely frustrating, not just for the players and the organisers, but for tennis fans as well. Remember, melbourne was under one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world and many here are excited that the tournament is happening. Its a sign that the city is coming back to life. Some were able to get on with practice. Others will have to stay indoors and hope they can get down here soon. But tournament officials are adamant it will go ahead. There is no intention of changing the times for the Australian Open. We will keep giving an update obviously as we get the Testing Results and then we will know what decisions we need to make. Melbourne park would normally be buzzing with pretournament events. Now, all they can do here is get it ready in the hope that play resumes on friday, and that thousands of tennis fans can fill this arena for the tournament next week. As the challenges of holding a Major International competition in the midst of a pandemic play out here at the Australian Open, many, including the olympic committee, will be watching closely. Shaimaa khalil, bbc news, melbourne. Now, imagine if everyone was as passionate about the environment as they are about football. A new project aims to use the energy of Football Fans to encourage sustainable habits. In planet super league, the greener the fans are, the more points their club gets. A pilot scheme hasjust concluded and joe wilson has been keeping score. Our planet is football shaped. Well, the worlds certainly shaped by football. It matters to millions. The English Premier League could still be won by various contenders. It remains a race. But there is one title thats been decided already. Ok, its not quite that trophy again. But Leicester City have won planet super league, the tournament that rewards sustainable achievements. Well, supporters at home won points for their clubs by carrying out various covid friendly tasks with an environmental angle. For example, make a goalkeeper from the things you find on a walk. Make a family meal which is meat free. Or make a Football Stadium for worms. Well, my players were left looking in vain for a ball. So i spoke to the experts, the adatiya family. The pilot scheme involved 11 different clubs, and their efforts in particular helped win the league for leicester. We baked gingerbread men, and we did the vegan meals. You do get drawn into the competitive aspect of the tournament. So, you know, we were very much vying for Leicester City to finish top and watching the League Tables of the scores every day. My wife wouldnt allow us to eat a single meal without taking a picture of it and sending it in. So we did at one point get quite obsessed with it. And it worked yes. Football to save the planet. Well, its never quite that simple. But if the environment begins at home, my worms, youll be relieved to learn, are safely back on earth. Joe wilson, bbc news. Time for a look at the weather.
