Hello and welcome. In myanmar, police have filed criminal charges against the civilian leaders who were deposed in a military this week. Theres been no word on the whereabouts of either Aung San Suu Kyi, or deposed president win myint, since monday. The United Nations said the charges just compounded the undermining of the rule of law in myanmar, the Immediate Release of the leaders. For a second day, protesters banged pots and sounded car horns in the countrys largest city. Our reporter Nye In Chan Aye filed this report from yangon. Pots banging people are showing their frustration and anger against the Military Coup. It has taken place on monday. This is the second night in a row people in general have been banging pots and pans and using their car horns in protest against the Military Coup that took place on monday. Essentially, what people here are saying is they dont want to live or work under the military any more. Singing translation we only respect our elected president , and no one else. If the president wanted the military to take over, then, we would have accepted that, but this coup is not fair so were expressing our feelings in a peaceful way. Were the voice of the little people. Translation | witnessedl the coups in 1962 and 1988. We know about what happens under military takeovers, so we have to do this. If we take to the streets, they will shoot us dead. Under these circumstances, i support this kind of protest. We want the elected leaders back. Translation people dont accept the coup. I thats why we want to drive them out by doing this. Pots banging singing on the other hand, the military is taking total control of the country. The military has installed an Ii Memberjunta which they say will rule under a state of emergency. Singing the people of yangon have come out here again in less numbers than yesterday to say they want their vote and voice to be heard. Singing nyein chan aye, bbc news, yangon. Our South East Asia correspondentjonathan head has more now on the charges Aung San Suu Kyi is facing. Well, these are actually look on the surface, transparently absurd charges. The police are saying that when they detained Aung San Suu Kyi in her own home they found that some of the Walkie Talkies used by her personal security were unauthorised. Absurd though that is, there is method in what the military is doing. Because if she is convicted of a criminal charge, however trivial it might seem, she can no longer run as an mp. When the military seized power, it had to promise at some point it would have another election. I think the real problem here is last year in last novembers general election, Aung San Suu Kyis party won a resounding majority, even bigger than before. The military s own proxy party did disastrously badly that has gotten in the way of the long term political ambitions of the armed forces commander. If they are to hold another election, the military needs, somehow, to get Aung San Suu Kyi out of the picture. And in many ways, this is a continuation of a more than 30 year battle the military has fought to get rid of this enduringly popularfigure. Theyve not succeeded yet, well have to see in the year of Emergency Rule theyve given themselves whether they can finally finish off Aung San Suu Kyi as a superb vote winner and as a leader of her country. Jonathan had reporting. Head. Wai wai nu joins me now she was a political prisoner for almost seven years and has since dedicated her life to promoting peace and defending human rights. Around the world vaccines are being produced that might help us return to Something Like the lives we had before covid. Here in the uk more than 10 million doses have already been given. But at the same time, the virus is mutating. So scientists are turning their attention to how to adapt vaccines to make sure they work against all new variants. Astrazeneca and Oxford University say they plan to have a next generation Covid Vaccine ready for the autumn. Our medical editor fergus walsh reports. The scientists at oxford who created the astrazeneca vaccine are continually monitoring how coronavirus is evolving. The current vaccine is thought to give good protection against new variants, but theyre working on tweaking the jab to make it future proof. The scientist whos leading the Research Says its relatively simple to redesign the vaccine. Its not difficult to put a different Antigenic Insert into the vaccine. So, we dont want to panic and say that we must have a new version of the vaccine now but on the other hand we are getting prepared, so that if it turns out we do need a new version, we will be ready to start using it. Itsjust going to be a sharp scratch, ok . Those on the oxford vaccine trials were shown to have 76 protection from a single dose, which lasted three months, rising to 82 protection, with the second shot. Youll be doing swabs every week at home. Its also the first time a Covid Vaccine has been shown to reduce transmission of coronavirus. Those immunised were much less likely to test positive for infection, cutting the risk of them passing the virus on to others. Thats the vaccine, but what about those who have actually had covid . They want to know how long they may be protected against subsequent infection. A study involving nearly 20,000 volunteers may provide at least part of the answer. Like the other participants, i was asked to send off a few drops of my blood every month to a lab. Scientists at uk biobank found that 88 of participants, nearly 9 in 10, who started off with antibodies, still had them six months later. These findings are really good news, because it does suggest that people who have been infected with the virus may have some degree of protection against another infection for some considerable time. And i think what we would really like to know next is, how long does this Natural Immunity last for beyond six months . Scientists think vaccines are likely to offer much stronger protection than natural infection, so a key message is to get immunised, even if you have already had covid, to boost your immunity and maybe protect others. Authorities in south korea have pledged to improve conditions for the countrys 200,000 Migrant Workers after a woman from cambodia was found dead living in a greenhouse in sub zero conditions. Canada has designated the proud boys as a terrorist entity, joining a list that includes al qaeda and the Islamic State group. The all male, anti immigrant group which describes itself as western chauvenist, was founded by a canadian. Some members were among the supporters of donald trump who stormed the Us Capitol Last month. Ben makuch is the National Security correspondent, for the candian tv network vice news. He told me groups like the pride boys pose quite a threat in canada, there were four White Supremacist groups that were included in this list by the canadian and it includes three groups that are bona fide Terrorist Organisations and proud boys being among them is something that is significant because it shows that the canadian government is serious about combating far right terrorism the future almost as seriously as they have taken things like isis or alqaeda. When you look at proud boys they are unquestionably the biggest numbered group in canada in terms of far right activism and as well as now one of the biggest Terrorist Groups in canada. Their numbers are in the thousands. In the thousands . yeah, that is its believed to be in the thousands. One of their telegram channels, which is an encrypted chat app, very popular among extremists, i think it is close to 4,000 people. They have had mass demonstrations in canada in the past. They splintered last year, they were big enough to be cut in half and still be quite numbered. So its something that is a serious concern in canada, not just for National Security and intelligence agencies but also local police. What practical consequences will this step have . Well, i think, quite literally, there are financial repercussions for this. In the case of isis and alqaeda, some of the members who have been identified in canada have been fairly sparse, because many of them are hiding, but when it comes to proud boys theirfaces have been out in the open in media reports, in pictures, online and social media. Some have even declared it. Were talking about of people who will wake up tomorrow and theyre going to be on lists that allow banks to cut ties, cut your bank account, allows the government to seize assets, and also charge you criminally your involvement in the organisation. It adds teeth to legislation, allowing police to go after these groups. I should also say that the proud boys have been very, they have done a lot of criminal things in the past, like street fighting and defacing public properties. There were things on the books the police could get these individuals on, but now its much easier, just for the membership alone or a picture of a yellow and black fred perry shirt at a proud boys rally is something that allows you almost membership to this group. Movie theaters are closed in many parts of the world due to the pandemic, but the hollywood awards season began in earnest on wednesday, with the announcement of the golden globe nominees. And history was made with three women nominated in the Best Director category. Among them, chloe zhao, who directed the movie nomadland. Our entertainment correspondent tom brook has more. Im not homeless, im just. Chloe zhaos picture nomadland, starring frances mcdormand, is a contemporary western, the story of a woman who leads a nomadic life in americas heartland. Its been playing at festivals and at their drive in venues, and its generated a lot of awards buzz. For 38 year old zhao, this, her third film, is a major achievement. Shes made history by becoming the first woman of asian descent to land a golden globe Best Director nomination. Obviously, shes pleased by the recognition. I think its great, i think its very happy. I love what i do, and anything that can help me keep doing what i love to do, ill take it. Last year, the south korean movie parasite won the top Best Picture Trophy at the oscars. Now, with chloe zhao earning a golden globe nomination, it suggests that hollywood is becoming more open to embracing asian storytellers long marginalised by the industry, especially women. Earlier i spoke to speak to jacqueline coley, whos a Film Critic Editor at rotten tomatoes. I asked her reaction to three women being nominated for Best Director at this years awards. Its a quite an incredible year, especially from the Hollywood Foreign press who has had a bit of an issue in the past. People will remember Natalie Portman when she was announcing the awards was clear to put a bit of shade out there saying all the male nominees. Well, now in 2021 we have three female nominees, including the first time two women of colour were nominated, the first time three women were nominated, and two Debut Directors as well in that Best Director category, with emerald fennell, british own emerald fennell. You will know her from killing eve as well, also call the midwife, which is where ive met herfrom. And then, of course, regina kings one night in miami as her debut film. Its great haul of nominations for netflix. Tell us about what that says about the company. Yeah, netflix had an incredible year. In fact, of all the award shows that have happened this year they have led nominations. Its actually something we keep track of on rottentomatoes. Com. We have a leader board in which we break down every and with films like da five bloods, ma rainey s black bottom, as well as their animated features, netflix has essentially learned how to do this game with a better sort of, i think, sense of purpose than some of the traditional studios who rely on glitzy Awards Dinners and events based on things as a way to get voters excited about them. Netflix has been playing in this streaming only, Watch Movies At Home Game for a while and i would say theyre well ahead of the curve. And i think the nominations reflect that. Before we go, this years Super Bowl Stadium will be a bit more empty than usual due to covid health precautions. There will be some vaccinated workers there, some fans, but they will be Cardboard Cutouts to fill in the rest of the seats. The league has launched fan in the stand, the Cutout Programme that lets people upload a photo of themselves or someone else. The cutout cost 100, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to local charities picked by the fans home team. To stay with us. Hello there. Winter is about to ramp up to another gear by the end of this week, certainly into the weekend. Itll be turning much colder with the risk of some disruptive snow in places. So for the next few days, itll gradually be turning colder for all, and well see increasing snow particularly over the hills in the north. Now for thursday, weve still got low pressure close by to the uk, its the Weather Front across the north bringing further cloud, outbreaks of rain to northern ireland, much of scotland, Northern England too, and here well see further snow over the scottish hills accumulating and drifting in that strong east southeast wind. Further south, after a bright start to the day, well start to see showery bursts of rain moving up from the south. Here, itll tend to be fairly mild, 8 10 celsius, but very cold across the north where we have that snow. Through thursday night, it continues with rain and the snow across scotland significant accumulations over the grampians and the highlands, very wet weather with a risk of flooding. Further south, a drier night to come and clear skies, could see some mist and fog across southern england, and again, a big temperature contrast from north to south. Now the snow continues as we head on into friday and saturday significant accumulations have prompted the met office to issue an Amber Warning for this heavy, incessant snow. And also, some very heavy rain for lower levels could cause some localised flooding so a whole host of issues there. Further west, well have sunny spells, a few showers, tends to stay dry across the far south east again, 9 10 celsius, much colder further north where it will also be windy with that drifting snow in the hills. Moving on into the weekend, our area of low pressure sinks a bit further southwards, so it means the rain and the hill snow across Scotland Will Drift into parts of Northern England at times too, so a whole wintry mix here could be disruptive. Further south, quite a bit of cloud around with outbreaks of rain, and temperatures dropping generally across the board. Still cold in the north and a little bit colder for much of england and wales, too. As we head on into sunday, the very cold air across the east pushes southwards right across the uk, and itll be very windy, so the wind making it feel even colder 2 3 celsius, some snow pushing into northern and eastern areas which could be disruptive. So turning very cold through this weekend for all areas, with the risk of some disruptive snow for some of us.
