Hello and welcome. In Myanmar Police have filed criminal charges against the civilian leaders who were deposed in a military this week. Theres been no word on the whereabouts of either Aung San Suu Kyi or the deposed president win myint since monday. The United Nations said the charges just compounded the undermining of the rule of law in myanmarand the democratic process, and they called for the Immediate Release of the leaders. For a second day, protesters banged pots and sounded car horns in the countrys largest city. Our reporter, nyein chan aye, filed this report from yangon. People are showing their frustration and anger against the Military Coup. It has taken place on monday. People in general have been banging pots and pans and using their car horns in protest against the Military Coup that took place on monday. Essentially, what people here are saying is they dont want to live or work under the military any more. Singing translation we only respect our elected president , and no one else. If the president wanted the military to take over, then, we would have accepted that, but this coup is not fair so were expressing our feelings in a peaceful way. Were the voice of the little people. Translation | witnessedl the coups in 1962 and 1988. We know about what happens under military takeovers, so we have to do this. If we take to the streets, they will shoot us dead. Under these circumstances, i support this kind of protest. We want the elected leaders back. Translation people dont accept the coup. I thats why we want to drive them out by doing this. On the other hand, the military is taking total control of the country. The military has installed an ii memberjunta who will rule under a state of emergency. The people of yangon have come out here again in less numbers than yesterday to say they want their vote and voice to be heard. Singing nyein chan aye, bbc news, yangon. Our South East AsiaCorrespondentjonathan Head has more now on the charges Aung San Suu Kyi is facing. On the face of it, these are transparently absurd charges. Police say when they detained Aung San Suu Kyi in her own home they found the Walkie Talkies used by her personal security are unauthorised. Absurd that is, there is method in what is going she is convicted as a criminal, she can no longer run as an mp. The real problem is last year in last novembers general election, Aung San Suu Kyis party won in a resounding majority, even bigger than before with the Military Proxy Party doing it disastrously badly. That has gotten in the weight of the long term political ambitions of the armed forces commander. If they are to hold another election, the Military NeedsAung San Suu Kyiout the Military NeedsAung San Suu Kyi out of the picture. This is a continuation of a more than 30 year battle the military has fought to get rid of this enduringly popular figure. Fought to get rid of this enduringly popularfigure. They have not succeeded yet, well have to see in the year of Emergency Rule they have given themselves whether they can finally finish off Aung San Suu Kyi as a superb vote winner and leader of the country. From a political prisoner to a peace and anti discrimination activist, wai wai nu joins me now. What do you worry about the most . Right now, i am worried about the safety and security of the activists and Civil Society activists and further arrest of the politicians. And im worried about dictatorship again. Around the world, vaccines are being produced that might help us return to Something Like the lives we had before covid. Here in the uk, more than 10 million doses have already been given. But at the same time, the virus is mutating. So, scientists are turning their attention to how to adapt vaccines to make sure they work against all new variants. Astrazeneca and Oxford University say they plan to have a next generation Covid Vaccine ready for the autumn. Our medical editor, fergus walsh, reports. The scientists at oxford who created the astrazeneca vaccine are continually monitoring how coronavirus is evolving. The current vaccine is thought to give good protection against new variants, but theyre working on tweaking the jab to make it future proof. The scientist whos leading the Research Says its relatively simple to redesign the vaccine. Its not difficult to put a different Antigenic Insert into the vaccine. So, we dont want to panic and say that we must have a new version of the vaccine now but on the other hand we are getting prepared, so that if it turns out we do need a new version, we will be ready to start using it. Itsjust going to be a sharp scratch, 0k . Those on the oxford vaccine trials were shown to have 76 protection from a single dose, which lasted three months, rising to 82 protection, with the second shot. Youll be doing swabs every week at home. Its also the first time a Covid Vaccine has been shown to reduce transmission of coronavirus. Those immunised were much less likely to test positive for infection, cutting the risk of them passing the virus on to others. Thats the vaccine, but what about those who have actually had covid . They want to know how long they may be protected against subsequent infection. A study involving nearly 20,000 volunteers may provide at least part of the answer. Like the other participants, i was asked to send off a few drops of my blood every month to a lab. Scientists at uk biobank found that 88 of participants, nearly 9 in 10, who started off with antibodies, still had them six months later. These findings are really good news, because it does suggest that people who have been infected with the virus may have some degree of protection against another infection for some considerable time. And i think what we would really like to know next is, how long does this Natural Immunity last for beyond six months . Scientists think vaccines are likely to offer much stronger protection than natural infection, so a key message is to get immunised, even if you have already had covid, to boost your immunity and maybe protect others. Afghanistans stalled Peace Process is facing the high probability of failure thats the stark warning coming from the eus commissioner for crisis management, whos visiting the country. Or, whether or not it will reconsider, and take into consideration forces like those regarding this major report today, advocating for some delay and possibly a reconsideration altogether. Movie theatres are closed in many parts of the world due to the pandemic, but the hollywood awards season began in earnest on wednesday, with the announcement of the golden globe nominees. And history was made, with three women nominated in the best director category. Among them, chloe zhao, who directed the movie nomadland. Our entertainment correspondent tom brook has more. Im not homeless, im just. Chloe zhaos picture nomadland, starring frances mcdormand, is a contemporary western, the story of a woman who leads a nomadic life in americas heartland. Its been playing at festivals and at their drive in venues, and its generated a lot of awards buzz. For 38 year old zhao, this, her third film, is a major achievement. Shes made history by becoming the first woman of asian descent to land a golden globe best director nomination. Obviously, shes pleased by the recognition. I think its great, i think its very happy. I love what i do, and anything that can help me keep doing what i love to do, ill take it. Last year, the south korean movie parasite won the top Best Picture Trophy at the oscars. Now, with chloe zhao earning a golden globe nomination, it suggests that hollywood is becoming more open to embracing asian storytellers long marginalised by the industry, especially women. Tom brook reporting. We can now speak to Jacqueline Coley whos a Film Critic Editor at rotten tomatoes. Finally, finally, finally, female directors have made it. What do you make of that . Of all the award shows that have happened this year they have happened this year they have lead nominations. It is something we keep track of on rotten tomatoes. We break down the films and how many wins they have. With some of the films, as well as the animated features, netflix has essentially learned how to do this game with a better sort of sense of purpose and some of the traditional studios who rely on Awards Dinners and events based on things as a way to get voters excited about them. Netflix has been playing in this streaming only watch movies at home game for a while and i think they are well ahead of the curve. I think we nominations reflect that. It doesn t surprise me that a movie like music get so many nominations will Emerald Fenneu many nominations will Emerald Fennell gets four. It was a little shocking to see the five bloodshot hour, but spike lee has only been nominated twice by the Hollywood Foreign someone of those was when he won best screenplay for blachklansman. I actually think that awards shows and festivals have done an incrediblejob of being able to marry this new digital setting and, like, technology and sort of circumstance have given us some great instances of things like the Sundance Film Festival where they have Virtual Party rooms, Something Like the Gotham Awards where they put the folks at the table, in a table Group Session so they can talk to the people that are part of your group. Winter is about to ramp up to another gear by the end of this week, settling into the weekend is going to be turning much colder with a risk of some disruptive snow in places. So for the next few days it will gradually be turning colderfor all and days it will gradually be turning colder for all and we will see increasing snow, particularly over the hills in the north. On thursday we still have got low pressure close by to the uk s weather front across the north bringing further cloud outbreaks of rain to northern ireland, to much of scotland, Northern England too, and here we will see further snow across the scottish hills accumulating and drifting in that strong southeast wind. Further south, after a race after the day, we will see Showery Bursts Of Rain Moving UpShowery Bursts Of Rain Moving Up from the south. Here it will tend to be fairly mild, 8 10 degrees, very cold across the north where we have that snow. Through thursday night, it continues, with rain and the snow across scotland, significant accumulations of the grampians in the highlands, very wet weather to higher levels and the risk of flooding. Further south, a dry note to come, under clear skies we could see mist and fog across Southern England and again a big temperature contrast north to south. Now, the snow continues as we head on into friday and significant accumulation has prompted the met office to issue an Amber Warning for this heavy and incessant snow. And also some very heavy rain to lower levels could cause some localised flooding, so a whole host of issues there. Further west we will have muggy spells, a few showers, tend stay dry across the face south east. Again, 10 degrees. Much colder further north. It will also be windy without drifting snow in the hills. To move on into the weekend, area of low pressure things a little further south was, so it means the rain and health snow across scotland will drift across parts of Northern England at times too. So a whole wintry mix it could be disruptive. Further south, quite a bit of cloud around, outbreaks of rain. And the temperatures dropping generally across the board. Still cold de minaur and a little bit colder for much of england and wales. As we head on into sunday, the very cold out across the east pushes southwards, right across the uk and it will be very windy, so the wind making it feel even colder, two or three degrees, some snow pushing into northern and eastern areas which could be disruptive, so turning very cold through this weekend for all areas with a risk of some disruptive snow for some of us.
