The big Silicon Valley Tech Companies had a hugely successful 2020, prompting more questions about their overwhelming dominance in financial and business terms. From san francisco, James Clayton reports. There have been winners and losers from this pandemic, and some of the biggest winners are also some of the Richest Companies in the world, based around san francisco. Take here at apple, last week, the Company Posted record Quarterly Sales of more than £80 billion. At that rate, during this 2. 5 minute news report, apple will have done 1. 5 million worth of sales. Big tech has had an astonishingly profitable pandemic. We all turned to technology more during the pandemic. Its as simple as that. We were doing more things online than ever before, from gaming to shopping, to seeing our doctor, you know, theyre not charities. Laughter you know, they are making money out of, you know, what theyre enabling. But some believe that making so much money at a time of Economic Hardship shows that theres something fundamentally wrong with the economy. Lets take tesla for example, just look at its share price over the last year. Its now worth more than the nine next largest Car Companies combined. Its made elon musk the richest man in the world. Speaking of wealth, out of the ten richest people in the world now, six are us Tech Entrepreneurs elon musk, tesla, jeff bezos, amazon, bill gates, ex microsoft, larry ellison, 0racle, mark zuckerberg, facebook and larry page, google. Joe biden has said he wants to look closely at competition around big tech, according to those close to him. I dont think he has a huge choice in the matter. Within the business community, there is a growing chorus of voices who are realising that theyre operating on a very unfair playing field. President biden is also reportedly considering hiring an Antitrust Tsar to look into monopolies in tech. Other senior democrats have even called for Companies Like google and facebook to be split up. Big tech has had a bumper year, but Withjoe Biden as president , theyre likely to face more and more scrutiny. Should so much power and wealth be concentrated in the hands ofjust a few companies on the west coast of america . James clayton, bbc news. It is just after 1 30am It Isjust after 1 30am in it is just after 1 30am in the morning. Now on bbc news, do black lives matter in brazil . In the first half of 2020, more people were killed by the police in Rio Dejaniero state than in the whole of america. 75 were black brazilians, many of whom were just teenagers. A warning this programme contains graphic violence from the outset. Sirens wail they chant the police stand accused of inflicting brutal violence. Most often seen to be hurt are young black men. Police brutality here is often horrific to watch. Shocking violence causing terror and fear every day. But given how often it happens, there are no mass protests, no backlash in the media, nojustice. In the year that black lives matter gripped the world, i set out to investigate what is the true scale of Lethal Police Violence in brazil and who is most at risk . Travelling across my home city of sao paulo, i went to meet a family whose teenage son had recently been shot and killed by a Police Officer in broad daylight. Dozens gather in sao paulo to protest igor s death. Hes been gone for four months now, killed at 16 years old. His family and friends are very emotional, but they fight for justice. Igor was shot in the head by a Police Officer on his way to buy groceries while his mother, ana paula was at home with coronavirus. In order to understand the scale of Police Violence in sao paulo, i teamed up with a local ngo, the brazilian form of public safety. Together, we looked at the profiles of all those killed by the police in the first half of last year. We discovered that in a state where the large majority of people self identified as white nearly 60 of those killed were black. Almost all of them were male, and a shocking 30 were less than 24 years old. Quite simply, if you are young, male and black in 2020, you were more likely to be killed by the police. These neighbourhoods where i lived, where many people live, where the bbc office is, they are the high income neighbourhoods from sao paulo. So the way the police behave in these neighbourhoods, its totally different from the way they behave where igor lived. For example, theres lots of mugging in my neighbourhood, and sometimes boys on bikes, they pass by and they steal your phone. This happened to me a lot, like three times. So, when im coming back from work and i come from the subway and i look at the corner of my apartment and i see a police car, i think, oh, im safe, thats good. I feel safe, you know . Which is totally different from the neighbourhoods far from downtown. One of the most violent killings of 2020 was that a 15 year old guilherme seen here celebrating his birthday. Before he disappeared, guilherme was last seen here outside of his grandmothers house. When he was finally found, he had been shot dead. Security camera footage from that night shows guilherme to talking to another boy. Guilherme can be seen in the video with a man later identified as a former Police Officer. In another, a Police Officer. Six hours later, his body was discovered dumped six km away in another city. He had been shot in the mouth. Rio dejaneiro is famous for its beaches, culture and carnival. But its also the most deadly state in brazil for Police Killings. In the first half of 2020, more people were killed by the police in rio than in the whole of america. But why is Law Enforcement here so aggressive . The answer, police raids operations in which dozens of officers enter favelas on the hunt for drug dealers. Criminals who are often armed and dangerous. Speaking to rio s former police chief, he does not condone the killings. But with one of the highest crime rates in the world, he says its important to understand being a Police Officer in brazil is extremely dangerous. By looking at the profiles of all those killed by the police in the first half of last year, we discovered 75 were black. For those living through lockdown in rio, it was not just about avoiding coronavirus but also police shootings. As a Journalist Living and working here, bruno itan says hes devastated how the violence has become a part of his daily routine. But last year, bruno witnessed one raid which shook the community to its core. It was known on friday when more than a dozen Police Officers entered the Favela Looking for armed drug dealers. Locals say at least 12 people were killed and five bodies left behind. Last year, in rio, Police Violence seemed to be escalating out of control. With an average of 150 people dying every month, the killings seemed relentless. All leading up to one pivotal case, the death of this child, joao pedro changed everything. We are going to meet rafaela, rafaela isjoao pedros mum. Joao pedro was murdered in may inside his house during a police operation. He was iii years old. Rafaelas tragic account matches forensic reports from the crime scene. Entering this house is like witnessing a horror scene. You have toys everywhere, you have childrens clothes in the bedrooms, you see clearly this is a house where children use to hang out all the time. And besides that, you have lots of bloodstains still from joao pedro. Blood still on the floor. You have these huge holes on the wall from the guns that the police shot more than 80 times. Joao s death sparked such outrage across the country, in response, the authorities suspended all police raids across rio s thousands of favelas. Immediately, the death toll plummeted, but despite all of the media attention, joao s family is still worried there will be no justice. Daniel lozoya is their lawyer. The death ofjoao pedro led to the stopping of all raids, and the stopping of all raids led to an 80 decrease in the number of People Killed by the police every month, according to our investigation. This suggests more than 100 lives could be saved every month. Asked by the bbc if police raids would restart after the pandemic ends, rio s office of security said. But speaking to rio s former Chief Of Police who use to coordinate raids across the city, he says Police Strategy needs to change. Of the thousands killed by police last year, its unlikely the majority will ever see justice. Only one in ten Police Killings result in a criminal charge. They chant. For the families of igor, guilherme and joao pedro, its now about their families learning to live without their children. Hello there. Tuesday brought us some very heavy snow across parts of scotland, but more especially in northern england. And that caused significant transport disruption at one stage, the a62 was completely shut, along with the snake pass. And thats the main road link between manchester and sheffield. The boundary between the mild air we have in the south and the cold air in the north is heading into scotland. And its here where the risk of snow will stay really through the rest of this week. Heavy snow across the high ground with significant accumulations. There is still the scope of transport disruption but the risk of disruption will increase towards the end of the week. Why do i say that . Because at lower elevations over the next few days, temperatures will be dropping by a couple of degrees celsius, tipping the balance from rain more to snowfall at lower levels hence the risk of disruption is more likely to increase later in the week. Right now across the central lowlands, weve got rain, a bit of sleet coming through as well. The snow mainly confined to the high ground here, also across the very high ground and across the far north of england, too. Delving into this zone, as we go through wednesday, we will continue to see that rain, a bit of sleet at times across the central belt, so probably nothing in the way of snow settling. If you go into the hills, yes, above 100 metres elevation, youre more likely to see snow, settling snow above 200 metres elevation, 10 20 cm over the next 48 hours. Elsewhere, weve got some bright skies in the west, but heavy rain across Southern England very heavy at times in the london area, and itll turn wet as well throughout much of east anglia. Mild in the south, but obviously where weve got the snow falling, particularly in the hills, temperatures struggling to get much above freezing at all in scotland. Through wednesday night, well continue to see that mucky mixture, really, in scotland. There might be a bit more in the way of snow starting to come down to some slightly lower levels across the north of the country, as those temperatures just start to edge downwards Just A Little Bit might be enough to tip the balance, perhaps a little bit of snow across the high ground of northern england, as well. For thursday, again, as the air gets colder, weve got a tendency to see a bit more snow getting down to some of those lower levels. In the south, weve got some rain, a few brighter spells for wales and the midlands, still mild in the south, still cold into scotland. And then beyond that, as we look at the forecast through friday and into the weekend beyond, there is a tendency for the weather to turn colder, and we may see it some snowfall more widely into next week. Thats your latest weather. A very warm welcome to bbc news. Im mike embley.
