It has been eight nine months for some people and they are desperate to see that loved ones and those living in care homes have really suffered because they have not been able to see their families. George, chrisjust touched on that point but that tangible contact between loved was, how important is it just for your motivation and well being but also for the health of some of your residence . I think it is so important. We, like many care homes across the country, maintained visiting, we have an outdoor visits, and indoor visits during the period and indoor visits during the period and we have maintained safety throughout but i think meaningful contact and more personal contact is going to be so important and we understand and recognise the health and well being of our residents and our staff and families. I think we have a reputation of being very positive and innovative and very enthusiastic and proud of what we do, despite the uncertainties and frustrations. 0ur do, despite the uncertainties and frustrations. Our staff have been brilliant throughout and we have maintained everyday life in a positive way but it has been extremely difficult for families. I think especially residence as well. The atmosphere has been preserved and protected and myjob in many ways is to reassure people that they can maintain contact and inspire people that we can still be doing great things, we are admitted positive about what were doing but it has been very hard and we are so thrilled to be doing this. It will have a huge amount of impact. Chris mentioned in the introduction that it will be trialed in the south and then rolled out during december. I think we know that so many people and other campaigns and publicity has been produced in recent times about how we want to try to get this happening more and ourfamilies about how we want to try to get this happening more and our families we are making contact with them now. I think people are more fatigued by it but, sadly, after the first time, we saw a lot of people who were normally getting very intense care from either child mental Health Services or psychologist or counsellor or Mental Health teams, and they are the ones living in a community they need face to face and we saw a lot of people, particularly we know, women under the age of 35 and more deprived areas at the highest rise of anxiety and depression. This time around, i have not seen it quite so much that is because we have adapted and adjusted for people to say we can keep that care going even if it is not face to face, the first time it was almost stopped. We are definitely seeing it but it does not seem definitely seeing it but it does not seem to be so much of the elderly but the younger. What we must not forget is that those in the very young bracket, in the teenage bracket, are still suffering and thatis bracket, are still suffering and that is one of the areas we must not neglect. And that has meant, in some cases, handing over devices before the proper Parental Controls are in place. And thats compounded by the fact that they may not have had enough time to supervise in the way that they wouldve done in an ideal world. So with my youngest, its simple im there, i operate the computer for her, i know shes not gonna see anything that she shouldnt. But my son is starting to get to the age where i want to give him a bit more independence but i also want to keep him absolutely safe. So so what do i do . I feel that i also should be teaching him how to spot and possibly even become resilient to the stuff that he will still encounter online. Yep, thats a dilemma that all of us parents have to face, so weve been taking a look at some of the tech that aims to help, but also how companies and legislation could perhaps do more. Like many parents, wed given sophie a phone, and we gave her that at the age of 12, and we discovered a few months later that sophie had been accessing really difficult material, really completely inappropriate for, well, in my view, anyone, but certainly a child of her age. Recently, a video of a young man taking his own life was posted on facebook and subsequently spread to other platforms, including tiktok, where it took days to be removed. Just this week, instagram announced that it will extend the use of Artificial Intelligence to spot this type of content to its eu users. It can then make it less visible and, in extreme cases, remove it. But this is a problem that exists across the industry. Even with sophisticated tools, harmful content still gets through. So ive been looking at safetowatch, a new ai video tracking platform that aims to help, which ive tested on an episode of the bbcs harlots. So the software is set to detect sensitive imagery and if it detects it, then it will grey the image out, thus prevent it from being seen. Now, its currently in alpha so it hasnt got its full functionality, but the general idea is that it can track video in real time. Now, that could be something thats being streamed directly from a phones camera, or some video thats being streamed from the internet, but it can block any nudity or any violence that a child shouldnt be seeing before it ever reaches their device. So this is all about semantic understanding, so the Artificial Intelligence isnt just looking at the image, its basically contextualising everything around it, including audio, so safetowatch also can analyse, detect and prevent threats in cartoons and anime. Its picked it up, its saying its picked it up, but its not hashing it. Its very early days for the tech, it is glitchy and full functionality is still being built, but its aims are big. It hopes to work across all content providers, including home made video. While the video tool is still being worked on, the compa nys ai powered monitoring keyboard has been available since last year. Once youve downloaded safetonets keyboard app, you can select it as you default. Now, if i start to type something unpleasant, like i hate you, for example, it comes up with the warning, saying watch out high risk content. And you can tap on that warning for more information. Oh, no would you like some advice . Youre not alone others do feel like you. We can all do simple things to try and protect children from harmful content. Most isps offer the facility to switch parental blocks on, that will stop some sites being visited, and most devices come with parental control settings that are easy to enable. But perhaps throwing Tech Solutions at tech problems isnt the answer, and we should be going back to basics. First thing is what does it mean . You know, what does inappropriate mean . Secondly, even if you do not, you know, know if its inappropriate, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, come to me. And thirdly, take a pause before you react. Children, you know, unfortunately will be exposed to harmful and inappropriate content and potentially to harmful behaviour from others online. And if that happens, the most important thing to do is to sit and work through that with your child. To take away devices would not only be an overreaction, but it does not then help to make sure that your child is safer in future. Theres no denying the new playstation is weird looking. Like the p55, the series x has better graphics and a superfast 55d, which drastically reduces loading times. It also comes in two versions the series x and the less powerful, cheaper, series 5. One feature that sets it apart is the brilliant quick resume, which lets you switch between games in seconds, picking up where you left off. And perhaps the ace up microsofts sleeve for the xbox is game pass a netflix Style Subscription Service which gives players access to hundreds of titles for a monthly price. We think Xbox Game Pass is a critically important part of our platform. We are trying to make gaming more seamless, easier to try new games, easier to experiment with new games. Its reallyjust offering a ton of choices to players right now. So, which of the two new next gen machines to choose from . Well, they are actually pretty different. The p55, at the moment, feels like the most next gen of the two thats because the games that are available for it at the moment really do show off what this machine can do. Its urgent because we have the vaccine on the horizon, thank goodness. And we cannot have anything that is going to prevent or undermine the roll out of the Vaccine Programme and create dangers for Public Health which is what this anti vaccination content does. The government insists it takes the issue extremely seriously. In a statement it said it had. If you do go online and to social media you do find it very poisonous anti vax nonsense, to be frank. It exploits peoples fears and mistrust of institutions and governments and spreads poison and harm so we are saying to government, we will work with you, we want to work with you ona with you, we want to work with you on a cross party basis to bring forward proposals, rules to stamp this out. The government have talked about having an on line harm bill and we are seeing bring that forward and we are seeing bring that forward and we are seeing bring that forward and we will work with you because this anti vax stuff online exploits mistrust which is why it is so important we Work Together. There is a bit ofa important we Work Together. There is a bit of a blurred line between anti vaccine stuff online and people who are just nervous about a new vaccine because vaccines usually ta ke yea rs vaccine because vaccines usually take years to develop and in this case were talking a matter of weeks. Youre absolutely right and families will have legitimate questions about the vaccine, it means for them, what level of immunity it brings, whether it is appropriate for them with there, if they have particular chronic conditions. But im afraid that is different from the Conspiracy Theory driven nonsense we often see on social media which suggest this particular vaccine will do immense harm to you and your loved ones and allow part ofa and your loved ones and allow part of a conspiracy by Big International Business People like bill gates to control the world and put microchips into peoples heads. This is clearly nonsense but easily Available Online and we are seeing the government lets Work Together to stamp out that. You are talking about wanting strong messaging from government but they have got commitment from twitter and google to get rid of this material and try and get rid of it at least. What more are you asking for . I think the problem is the voluntary approach is still failing to. There has been progress. You should have taken things down. But all the different platforms are still allowed material to go up there for some time and i did a quick search last night ahead of doing the telly this morning and i can easily find stuff on instagram and tick tock. I think we now have to look at fines for social Media Companies. To tackle this taboo, british photographer, rankin, has created an online exhibition to encourage people to talk more openly about their experiences. The project, lost for words, features some well known faces, as well as people who have lost someone during the pandemic. Lets take a look. You have those moments where you say to yourself, am i allowed to be happy, ami allowed to enjoy this moment . I know there are times you do feel guilty so i get to the point where you dont smile as much as you would have done, you would do normally. How can you be happy when youve lost somebody and that person is not there to share it with you . It was right before christmas i lost my dad. Christmas, i was getting everything sorted, i was going through everything that needed to be done and on christmas day, lo and behold, i came downstairs, thats where me and my dad used to have coffee or a cup of tea or something and think about the day ahead, and thats when it hit me, really, the flood gates opened and i shut down completely. I was in that moment sobbing on the stairs of this church, having lost my nan and fully understood that this is the reality and this is going to happen again to other people that are with you now. Its very sobering. In life you are going to need to support people and you are going to need to be supported by people so when its your turn, take your turn. Turn that love that you would have given to somebody else into that love that you give yourself to look after yourself. Its fine to wake up and go, do you know what, today i cant cope with the world, today i cant deal with whoever elses issues it is and i dont have to be strong for anybody else but myself. Lets speak to the creator, rankin, and presenterjeff brazier, who took part in the exhibition. Rankin, if you used your own personal experience to form this exhibition. Tell us a little bit about that. I was inspired 15 years ago by my parents passing away and i was so ago by my parents passing away and i was so unprepared for it. I was so unprepared for the conversations when my mum got ill and so unprepared when my dad had a heart attack. I didnt know what to do, it was almost like losing the roof of the house then i realised we just dont talk about the stuff. We never, ever discuss it. There is stuff out there if you look for it but it is such as to boo, and i said iam going but it is such as to boo, and i said i am going to do as many projects as ican to i am going to do as many projects as i can to lift the lid on this and really get underneath the skin of it. And this is the latest x that it might exhibition which is an online exhibition, you will be able to see it from tonight and doing this in these pictures on the show has again been light therapy again. It is been incredible therapy for me. I lost my dad to our heart attack ten years ago and it never leaves you. There is a picture on the wall of the westminster news room when i worked of meat but whenever i pass it it looks a bit like my dad and i am jolted back in that sense of grief never leaving you are so that sense of grief never leaving you are so powerful. Even after 15 yea rs i you are so powerful. Even after 15 years i see a reflection in a window andi years i see a reflection in a window and i think it is my dad and its me and i think it is my dad and its me and im doing an interview and i Say Something and i think that came from my mum and it never goes. Theres something really comforting about that what i wanted to do with the showers really get people talking about it so you can understand that grief is something that can last forever, it can last for the rest of your life but also it is quite a positive thing, it is i really strangely comforting thing. What is really interesting for me having done this is everybody goes through this ina done this is everybody goes through this in a different way. In the same way we are all different as human beings we go through this and there is no or wrong beings we go through this and there is no or wrong way, beings we go through this and there is no or wrong way, that is really the essence of the show. However you do it it is ok, ensure grief, not to worry about it and not to beat yourself about it. People handle it in different ways. Jeff, you decided you wanted to take part because you have lost not just you wanted to take part because you have lost notjust one person very close to you but several. Tell us about that. Whenever rankin does everything he springs his artistic and creative flair to whatever that exhibition will be about an grief is a subject that is typically to boo and we avoid like the plague because we do not like how it makes us feel but it is one of the most important conversations we will ever have either after the event because we need the release of the emotions we are carrying two eventually suppressing our before so we can talk about people what they might like to happen at their funeral without belongings so there is no room for tension within the family environment. I think a lot of people associate me with the loss of the children of my mum but sadly there is more, grandparents and so on and so is more, grandparents and so on and so forth. For the exhibition it is really difficult to decide which of my lost relatives would like to use for this and my nan, for whatever reason, was the one i wanted to bring forward and share with rankin. It could have been a number of people. Jeff, are we Getting Better at talking about grief was to mark the whole british stiff upper lip thing. We got better at talking about Mental Health, are we Getting Better at the grief stuff and talking about it . That is the best way to deal with it, isnt it . Chris, you shared an insight of your own which was very kind of you to do so own which was very kind of you to do so but i think also very important because the more people see the kind of individuals that rankin is using for his exhibition and you yourself being able to openly share there are moments where you are triggered and anchored back to a feeling of grief, anchored back to a feeling of grief, a memory for someone you anchored back to a feeling of grief, a memory for someone you have lost, i think that is quite propelling, it makes the case for other people to look at that and think, what if i share howl look at that and think, what if i share how i feel . At the minutes we are all going through a horrendous time and ourgrief are all going through a horrendous time and our grief is probably magnified as a result of the complicated confusion that surrounds us at the moment so i think we have to bea us at the moment so i think we have to be a little more accepting of the fa ct to be a little more accepting of the fact that we might not be at our best at the moment but away we have dealt with our grief at times, a lot of us might have been good atjust parking that to the side and deal with that another day because of the time and space we have unlocked and all of a sudden our subconscious starts to offer things up and says you might want to deal with this now. Lets listen to that and catch that and have those because it will helpful. Rankin, can you get better at coping with grief or does it stay with you for your entire life . |j think it absolutely stays with you andi think it absolutely stays with you and i dont think you get better at it, i think you get more tools to control it, have it when you need it, be able to lean into it when you wa nt it, be able to lean into it when you want it. I was going to say the thing about this period of time is death has been the matter come about data and statistics and i think it is so unfortunate we are not actually talking about the people andi actually talking about the people and i planned the show before covid with a colleague at the royal london and it was really because i had gone through this myself and we would ensure that we should do this through covid times but the more the news has been about numbers and statistics, the number of people that have passed away from the spiders is like a football stadium full of uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, mums and dads so lets put this conversation to the front of the agenda, which is why i have done it. They re claiming damages after having a small coil, called essure, implanted to prevent pregnancy. The Pharmaceutical Company bayer has set aside £1. 2 billion to settle lawsuits from almost 40,000 women in america. Ijust started to have heavy periods, migraines, which id only ever had when i was pregnant, so they were hormonal. My back was so painful id wake up in the middle of night with pains in my hips and my back and it was just. Id wake up crying. This is essure, a tiny metal coil. Its now been withdrawn from the market but in 2002, it was promoted as an easy, non surgical procedure, a new era in sterilisation. It was inserted into the fallopian tube where it was meant to cause scarring, blocking the tube and preventing pregnancy. But far from the promise of no surgery, these women have now had, or are waiting to have, hysterectomies in order to remove the device. Its easy to get it done. Its easy to say, you know, have this, its wonderful. But then the fallout, theres nobody there. Theres no support apart from, you know, people that we found ourselves. Theres. No one will listen because its just womens things. Essures manufacturer bayer has just set aside £1. 2 billion to settle claims from 39,000 american women who say theyve been harmed by the device. Thats prompted a legal case here. This solicitor has started court action on behalf of 200 women in england who say essure has caused them severe suffering. The reports that have come out from the american proceedings, are that conceptus and bayer were failing to report adverse events, so thats when they become aware that theres a problem with the device, and thats something that were going to look at very, very carefully indeed. Bayer strongly refutes those allegations and stressed it has never violated regulations around complaints. It said, we take all adverse events seriously and the Company Stands behind the safety and efficacy of essure following two decades of research. But some doctors who fitted essure remain sceptical and say the monitoring of new medical devices is inadequate. We learned from the mesh problems, we have learned from the breast implants, we have learned from essure device that if you put materials in the body for a long time, we need more information with long follow ups on what it does to the body, and to be honest, we dont know. And for those whove suffered, more information could have changed everything. Its been really hard. Notjust physically, but mentally. Ifeel my children have missed out on a lot and it makes me feel guilty because if i hadnt had essure, then i wouldnt be where i am now. Life would be very different for me and my children. I think it is possible to make change quickly in an organisation. When i took over a number ten after the 2017 election, there was a difficult atmosphere. A lot of people had not been happy. The key thing is. I think there has been a battle as to who gets access to the Prime Minister and the job of a chief of staff is to make sure all of the right people get access to the Prime Minister and when you have an important decision to make, he or she hears from all of the right voices in order to be able to make the best decisions possible. The other observation i would make is this title chief of staff, this grand job title, people will treat you likejordie barrett important person, but actually the key word treat you like you are an important person. You have not been elected, youre there to make sure the entire government machine is doing what the Prime Minister wants to do. Are you suggesting that is what Dominic Cummings was trying to do . |j suggesting that is what Dominic Cummings was trying to do . I was not there, i do not know. That is the danger. It feels like the per minister felt that what he wanted to get done was not being done and that is why he has looked for change Prime Minister. Its hard for us to comment from the outside as we have not seen but he clearly wanted changes in downing street and what he now needs to make sure he has got asa he now needs to make sure he has got as a team around him who are working together in a common name. We are still in the middle of this pandemic, right at the end stage of the brexit negotiations. It is difficult to think in recent years ofa difficult to think in recent years of a harder time to be Prime Minister and he deserves and needs a tea m minister and he deserves and needs a team around him who is supporting him and enacting what he wants to get done. Who would you appoint as his chief of staff . I am not going to packet individuals. I do not think that is myjob. 0h, go on it is important they have that right relationship with the Prime Minister. They do not want to disturb the Prime Minister, they want to come to you and ask if the per minister agrees with this idea . You have to know the panel is as mind and be able to speakfor panel is as mind and be able to speak for him or panel is as mind and be able to speakfor him or her if thatis that is interesting the importance ofa that is interesting the importance of a personal relationship between a chief of staff and Prime Minister. |j guess you can only properly test that once you have early appoint because that is when the intensity of that relationship sort of that relationship sorta bears out. By that point, it is too late if that chemistry does not work sort of bears out. We did not know each other very well before she brought me and so you have to develop that relationship very quickly. 5ome me and so you have to develop that relationship very quickly. Some of the other things you could look for an experience and connections with any party and you will know that better than me reporting on it day and and day out, but relations between number ten and conservative mps do not seem to be as good as they should be. Choosing someone who is well known and liked within the Parliamentary Party and can try and have a better relationship between downing street and notjust conservative mps, parliament will generally the per minister really well. How do you keep, how should borisjohnson try well. How do you keep, how should Boris Johnson try to well. How do you keep, how should borisjohnson try to keep the good bits of the Dominic Cummings either into the new era so there are some conservative mps who feel that a party could become obsessed with one, being all 5outhern party could become obsessed with one, being all southern and posh again rather that huge triumph in the red wall of midlands and northern six taken from labour and the last election. How do you keep the last election. How do you keep the essence of what Dominic Cummings is all about without what critics saw as the negativity, the briefing or the aggression .
