Protests erupt in the us state of wisconsin after video Footage Shows Police shooting a black man several times dozens of people are feared trapped beneath a five story good afternoon and welcome to bbc news. Scotlands first minister Nicola Sturgeon says her government is in the final stages of consulting headteachers on the plans for students and teachers to wear Face Coverings in corridors and communal areas. Face coverings are already required at three schools in edinburgh, strathspey and inverness as part of efforts to tackle the spread of coronavirus. Our scotland correspondent Alexandra Mackenzie reports. Pupils arrived at James Gillespies high school in edinburgh this morning. A memo was sent on friday saying that from today, all adults and pupils must wear Face Coverings indoors whilst moving around between classes. I think it is a great idea. For the children coming back into school, it has been quite a shock being such a large group of people again, after being in isolation for all this time. I think itll help them feel a bit safer. It kind of like reduces the risk of the spread of the coronavirus. It feels like a safer environment now. There has also been a move towards wearing face masks in two secondary schools in the highlands. They must wear a Face Covering when moving around the school, using the canteen or other social areas. With no hard evidence from the government, what we have found or what we feel we are facing is simply a political decision and not a scientific one. Scotlands largest Teaching Union said it would press the Scottish Government further on Face Covering protocol. I think the government should focus on how they can make the classes smaller to enable physical distancing. In the absence of that, we need guidance on Face Coverings being used in areas which are clearly crowded. The Scottish Government said the situation is being monitored closely and said they would continue to review any emerging scientific evidence. The education secretary is in the final stages of consulting with teachers and local authorities on a recommendation for the use of Face Coverings by staff and pupils in secondary schools when they are moving around in corridors and communal areas. 22 coronavirus cases, most of them staff members, have now been linked to this school in dundee. An increasing number of School Pupils and staff are testing positive for covid 19, but the government believes the infection has been transmitted through other indoor gatherings. Some children in Northern Ireland returned to school today and schools in england and wales will return from next week. Borisjohnson says the life chances of a generation are at stake, as he appeals to parent to make sure their children do return for the new term. Teaching unions in england are worried they need more staff, extra teaching space and a clear plan b if theres a spike in coronavirus cases. Our Political Correspondent ellie pricejoins me now from westminster. A real impetus from the government, from borisjohnson to make sure that pa rents from borisjohnson to make sure that parents and pupils are not too anxious ahead of the new school term. That is right. Boris johnson returned from his holiday early and on top of this inbox was talking about education, the plea to parents to send their children back that there was a moral duty to send him back. The government feels they must get this right, notjust because of those life chances of the children that he talks about, but also that the government has made a mess of plenty to do with education of the past few weeks. He saw the mess that the Election Results in the u and exactly those exams would be graded and the problem before the last term we children were supposed to be going back to school and that was not achieved either. This is a real symbol to get children back to school at the start of the next term at the start of next week. This is seen as big moment for the government, notjust to get things back to normal but it will be plenty of pa rents back to normal but it will be plenty of parents will be able to go back to work. Theres a real sense of this being a particular milestone in this being a particular milestone in this whole coronavirus saga that we have all been dealing with. It is a test that the government is set for itself in the test that it is determined to pass. We are not suggesting that because we believe there is a system of controls in place and all schools for children to be able to return safely and for staff to be able to operate safely within the schools. We have seen this roll it out right across the country. If youve seen of1. 6 across the country. If youve seen of 1. 6 million children return back to school safely. But of course, this is all in conjunction with a process of later efforts to continue to control this virus that why we have was sickly very careful and very cautious approach as we brought schools back and we have seen it in the flesh. The children can come back to schools, come back safely to those schools and is been an excellent place for them to learn and come back to already this year. He was reiterating government policy that there will be no review as yet into the guidance for wearing Face Coverings and schools. Downing street suggested that there plenty of other measures in place to protect the children, not least the safety of staff and pupils working inconsistent groups, this idea of bubbles and ill give some protection to both pupils and pa rents. Protection to both pupils and parents. And theres a big concern for Face Coverings will act as an obstruction of communication between stu d e nts obstruction of communication between students and pupils. Doctors treating russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny says there s evidence he was poisoned. He is being treated in berlin afterfalling ill on an internal russian flight last week. His condition is said to be serious but not life threatening. He remains in an artificial coma. A little earlier i spoke tojenny hill in berlin. The doctor say they do not know exactly what the substance was but as his supporters have suspected all along, there is evidence that he was poison. They have been examining him ever since he came to berlin for treatment on saturday. This it would ta ke treatment on saturday. This it would take time to establish exactly what happened is the first of referred of them. He is still in the, his condition is serious but not life threatening. Although, at this stage, they cannot guarantee a full return to health. They say there may be longer term consequences for his nervous system and they have given us nervous system and they have given us very little detail. They believe that he has been poisoned with a substance that might belong to a group of inhibitors. There might consequences for his nervous system. They released a statement after speaking to his wife here in berlin. And they said that they have released the statement because they believe it is in the best interest that the world knows exactly what happened to him. And of course, he isa happened to him. And of course, he is a ferocious opponent of vladimir putin, the suspicion inevitably is that the kremlin may have had something to do at this, but when youre working from the doctors doesnt really add any evidence in particular as to who may be behind this poisoning, if it was indeed a poisoning. We would not expect the doctors to be looking into that side of what is happening. Theirjob is to try and save his life and assess exactly what happened in being able to treat him with the antidote thats going to work, whatever the substance actually was. But, of course, this is causing huge political concern. This man is lying ina political concern. This man is lying in a city centre hospitalist police guard his bed. In two years ago, another russian diplomat was treated in the same hospital having also been poisoned. They didnt actually find the substance, but they said theyre find the substance, but they said they re pretty find the substance, but they said theyre pretty sure, given the effects that body had suffered that it was what he experienced. Bear in mind that just last summer, it was what he experienced. Bear in mind thatjust last summer, a man was shot dead in broad daylight in berlin park and with the German Authorities say was a state sponsored assassination. So, this is going to ratchet up the tension between russia in the west and after the saulsberry poisoning, this is a huge concern to perhaps the uk as well. It may be something causing concern of the highest political level where at least one politician in berlin if saying what we are starting to see youre from russia is a pattern of behaviour. Emergency authorisation for a blood plasma to treat coronavirus patients. In the us, the food and Drug Administration has given emergency authorisation for the use of blood plasma to treat coronavirus patients. The technique uses antibody rich blood plasma from people whove recovered from the disease, and has already been used on over 70 thousand people in the states. The white house is also reported to be considering securing rapid access to a vaccine being developed by astrazeneca and oxford university. Im joined now by professor Richard Haynes from oxford university. Hes in charge of the recovery trial, which is testing a number of potential coronavirus treatments, including plasma collected from covid 19 patients. Thank you so much for being with us. Can you put this in the context for us. Can you put this in the context for us. President trump wants to make a truly historic announcement in the battle against the virus that will save countless lives. Is that a bit ofan save countless lives. Is that a bit of an overstatement . I think it is a bit premature at the moment, we do not know given the convalescence plasmid, cannot verify that statement at the moment. Can you tell us how it works . We know the theory of what it hoped it does the antibodies donated to the patients give them a kick start in their fight against the virus, so they can stave off the virus before becoming too unwell. It is theoretically possible, but we do not know if that is what happens in practice and u nfortu nately is what happens in practice and unfortunately theres a lot of theory behind other medicines but do not get that result. An emergency authorisation for the treatment of coronavirus. So the bit premature in that case . |j think so. I think there are some pretty prominent scientists in america and elsewhere in the world that suggest a queen with that, but perhaps it is a bit too soon to make this recommendation. When might be know a bit more about whether or not this works or it can be implemented asa this works or it can be implemented as a treatment to be more widely around the world 7 as a treatment to be more widely around the world . There are trials going on in those countries around the world, including our own recovery trial. We are hoping we may have some results by the end of the year if another child gets good results earlier than that, than all the better. How your trials working, how many people are involved in that . As a whole, we have 4000 people. And for the convalescence trial, we have 350 people from 100 hospitals. If quite a bit of a ways to go yet before we have those people in our trial. Generally, are you quite optimistic about this whether or not it might work and be effective . I think it is one of the most promising treatments being tried in lots but unfortunately, there has not been the proper trail of Plasma Treatment for coronavirus oi of Plasma Treatment for coronavirus or other viral infections. Of Plasma Treatment for coronavirus or other viral infectionslj of Plasma Treatment for coronavirus or other viral infections. I believe he is used quite successfully in the treatment of a bowl in africa. Use pretty widely there with some, it was not really robustly tested. What about the vaccine in the lead on to the search for a vaccine . To have any information about that for us, when that might ready . Im afraid, that you may know more about that than i do. Your hoping that it will be ready as soon as possible. And know the scientists are working desperately hard on it. Thank you very much. And a comment from joe biden, the candidate for the president ial nomination who has condemned what he called the use of Excessive Police force.
