Good afternoon and welcome to bbc news. The life chances of a generation are at stake. Thats the warning from borisjohnson whos made a direct appealfor students to be back in the classroom after the disruption of lockdown. Scottish students are already back well have more from glasgow in a moment but children in england, wales and Northern Ireland will be returning over next couple of weeks. Teaching unions are worried they need more staff, extra teaching space and a clear plan b if theres a spike in coronavirus cases. 0ur Political Correspondent nick eardley reports. Filling the seats is going to be a keyissue filling the seats is going to be a key issue for the government. Theyve made it a priority thing though is a moral kids back to school full pop you might have seen senior ministers in classrooms in recent making it clear education is a key concern. This was Boris Johnson a fortnight ago. He believes the risk of contracting cov in a school is small and that is worse for a childs development to be away from class any longer. Of contracting covid in a school. People did with children to sit my parents to send children back to school next children want to be back in school with friends that have teachers leaving lessons because the most effective way for young people to catch up on their education, and thats why the Prime Minister is right to say it is a moral imperative for schools to be open in september and young people to come back into school and resume their education. Study suggest many pa rents a re education. Study suggest many pa rents are nervous, education. Study suggest many parents are nervous, opening schools could mean the overall rate of transmission rises with parents mingling, some may be going back to work but government advisers agree new risks and schools themselves are small was transmission between teachers the highest risk. We think the risks for children in schools is exceptionally small from covid but the risk of not attending school is significant and we know if children miss out on their education, particularly those in deprived areas, that will have a lasting negative impact. Education has been a tough issue for this government with ministers still dealing with the gcse results row. They were criticised for not doing more to get primary pupils back for the summer. Borisjohnson has primary pupils back for the summer. Boris johnson has made primary pupils back for the summer. Borisjohnson has made getting all stu d e nts borisjohnson has made getting all students back next month a key test for this government. 0ne students back next month a key test for this government. One where there is very little room for manoeuvre. Failure. More guidance is wanted for what will happen if there was an outbreak. You like working for schools to open and keen that the government will face up to its responsibility to make sure schools continue to open particularly if there are local spikes and that there are local spikes and that there is not a second way for the virus. They are not giving them the information and support they need. 0ver information and support they need. Over the past couple of weeks, totally preoccupied with their own exams fiasco when they should have been out supporting schools and reassuring parents. There will be more reassurance in the coming days as ministers try to persuade parents to send children back to school in england next week. Students and teachers in secondary schools in scotland could soon have to wear Face Coverings in corridors and communal areas. Scotlands first minister Nicola Sturgeon says her government is in the final stages of consulting headteachers on the plans. Face coverings are already required at three schools in edinburgh, strathspey and inverness as part of efforts to tackle the spread of coronavirus. 0ur scotland correspondent Alexandra Mackenzie reports. Pupils arrived at James Gillespies high school in edinburgh this morning. A memo was sent on friday saying that from today, all adults and pupils must wear Face Coverings indoors whilst moving around between classes. I think it is a great idea. For the children coming back into school, it has been quite a shock being such a large group of people again, after being in isolation for all this time. I think itll help them feel a bit safer. It kind of like reduces the risk of the spread of the coronavirus. It feels like a safer environment now. There has also been a move towards wearing face masks in two secondary schools in the highlands. They must wear a Face Covering when moving around the school, using the canteen or other social areas. With no hard evidence from the government, what we have found or what we feel we are facing is simply a political decision and not a scientific one. Scotlands largest Teaching Union said it would press the Scottish Government further on Face Covering protocol. I think the government should focus on how they can make the classes smaller to enable physical distancing. In the absence of that, we need guidance on Face Coverings being used in areas which are clearly crowded. The Scottish Government said the situation is being monitored closely and said they would continue to review any emerging scientific evidence. The education secretary is in the final stages of consulting with teachers and local authorities on a recommendation for the use of Face Coverings by staff and pupils in secondary schools when they are moving around in corridors and communal areas. 22 coronavirus cases, most of them staff members, have now been linked to this school in dundee. An increasing number of School Pupils and staff are testing positive for covid 19, but the government believes the infection has been transmitted through other indoor gatherings. Alexandra mackenzie, bbc news, glasgow. And well be speaking the executive director of connect, scotland s National Parents organisation in about half an hour. Thousands of children have returned to classrooms in Northern Ireland for the First Time Since lockdown. The term has begun for years seven, 12 and 14. All pupils are due back by next week, and the Education Minister says hes confident Safety Measures are in place. 0ur ireland correspondent chris page reports. For the First Time Since march, classrooms in Northern Ireland are filling up again. At the start of this unique year. The term feels even newer than usual. Im so excited, i was ready to come back from the ist of april so im excited that we can have as normal time as possible. It will be a stranger but hopefully as in the teachers can work together. Hopefully it will be a good year. There are familiar sights for pupils arriving here today but they will notice some big differences like notices reminding people to socially distance as much as possible and all over the school, dozens as possible and all over the school, d oze ns of as possible and all over the school, dozens of hand sanitising stations. These owns, the supervision levels, the cleaning of the routines have had to change and we had to think of absolutely everything so that there is confidence now. White make the day is hugely important, not only for teachers and students but also pa rents. For teachers and students but also parents. It of a sense of normality. More driving to be run and taxi round the school. It has been a long six months and they are itching to get back to school. In primary schools, the children returning today are mainly those in the last yearfor today are mainly those in the last year for the today are mainly those in the last yearfor the additions to today are mainly those in the last year for the additions to the daily routines that the amount they arrive. At sinclair is in west belfast, pupils and their families are feeling a mixture of nervousness and eagerness. Im excited for nervous . Yeah. Bit nervous but i know they just nervous . Yeah. Bit nervous but i know theyjust need to follow the rules. Just listen to what everyone else is saying and make sure to follow them and everyone will be safe. Might make some Teaching Unions have criticised the devolved government for what they say is a rushed plan. Ministers have announced a funding package of £a2 million to help with issues like transport, potential staff absences and protective equipment. The focus in his early days will be helping pupils to adjust in the covid era. Lets get more on this and speak to the director of the National Association of head teachers Northern Ireland, helena macormac. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. White make the Education Minister recently writing to parents saying schools are safe to open. Is he right . 0ur right . Our members want nothing more than to ensure all children are back and youre working incredibly hard to make sure that is a reality. There area number of make sure that is a reality. There are a number of schools that are closed, apprehension is out there. Tha nkfully closed, apprehension is out there. Thankfully evidence does point to low transmission rates between children but School Leaders cannot control what happens in wider society. They are doing out the everything they can for that are they safe to open . At the moment, our members have done everything in their power to make sure they can be as safe as possible but as i say, all risks cannot be eliminated. What are your main concerns . Our members have been working tirelessly what concerns do remain. Formal guidance issued last week was issued should weigh to in the day and unions were not consulted. There is the interpretation of that guidance and what it means on the ground. Theres also been delays in supply chains. Some schools have not received sufficient. It was said that the intention was to have all pupils backin intention was to have all pupils back in september. It was concerning there was not guidance more forthcoming to unions and indeed School Leaders so the consultation could happen properly. School leaders so the consultation could happen properlym School Leaders so the consultation could happen properly. Ifi am a pa rent could happen properly. Ifi am a parent watching right now, i am not feeling reassured by what youre saying. You have to reassure parents that we are excited to see pupils backin that we are excited to see pupils back in schools and happy to see pupils back in schools. They have undertaken risk assessments to the force extents. An awful lot has fallen on their plates. They have to make sure their art needs are met. Individual risk assessments have taken. And also they are trying to balance the demands of the department on them. There are concerns out there. There are going to be concerns. 0ur concerns out there. There are going to be concerns. Our members cannot control what happens externally in the wider environment but certainly they have taken every precaution to ensure maximum safety. As you know, pupils have been away from school for a significant time period and there is no substitute in terms of face to face contact directly in the classroom in terms of pupils health and well being. White like you say a significant time period and it has been but there has been plenty of time on that basis to work out how to open schools as safely as possible when they do so and yet you seem not to be totally convinced this is a good plan. There arejust things i need to be ironed out with this, like, for example, the guidance states that everyone in a bubble, if there is a positive test, those children should go home and should be tested but yet Public HealthAgency Guidance here says they are only testing people who are symptomatic so we need to know, all those children going to be tested and what protocols are in place . There is guidance but our members very much need to know there is practical, on the ground, out workings of the guidance. But isnt it clear that if the test is positive then all those in the bubble have to go home . Its quite clear, isnt it . They have to go home but what it is unclear is will all of them be tested . Unclear is will all of them be tested . The guidance for coming from the department for education says those children should tested but pha is saying that only those who are symptomatic will be tested. Does this mean parents will be looking to undertake this mean parents will be looking to u nderta ke tests this mean parents will be looking to undertake tests privately and who will pay for that . Will there be enough tests made available . What are enough tests made available . What a re exactly enough tests made available . What are exactly protocols . How does the testing happen . This is plan b if there should be cases found in schools. As far as planning is concerned, they won, schools reopen, we have all Safety Measures in place that we could possibly think of, there is no more reassurance that you could possibly get at this stage, is there . Well, we do think there was further reassurance. Further things we have asked for a like dedicated helplines for parents to reassure them and a dedicated helpline for principles. We Want Department to give us immediate a nswe rs. Department to give us immediate answers. That was announced this morning, we havent seen the detail of it, we dont know how much will be going directly to the front line to meet the needs of schools. More can be done in terms of messages from the minister and from the department to meet the concerns of practitioners directly at the front line. Tesco says its creating 16,000 permanentjobs to support the growth in its online business. The Supermarket Chain expects most of the roles to be filled by workers who joined the company on a temporary basis at the start of lockdown. Our Business Editor simon jack has more. You hear a lot about covid having accelerator trends that are already happening out there in the economy and you couldnt get a better example than that than the Online Grocery business. Its taken 20 yea rs grocery business. Its taken 20 years to get from 0 9 of the Business Online from tesco going from 9 16 in eight weeks and they clearly think that changing behaviour is permanent and therefore those temporary workers that are taken on to deal with it have been turned into permanent jobs. Taken on to deal with it have been turned into permanentjobs. The interesting thing is that convenience is the most profitable bit of supermarket business and online delivery is the least profitable bit. It is actually very ha rd to profitable bit. It is actually very hard to make money in Online Grocery so obviously great news for the jobs and asa so obviously great news for the jobs and as a counterweight to all those job losses wee seen but cracking the nut of making Online Grocery deliveries profitable is one that the whole industry is grappling with, particularly as so much as the old with moving online. Blood plasma from people whove recovered from covid i9 has been authorised for wider use by authorities in the United States. 70,000 people in the us have already received the blood product by transfusion. Earlier, our Health CorrespondentAnna Collinson explained more about the treatment and how it works. Many countries are using it to treat coronavirus, though currently we are not entirely sure how effective it is, and the method is pretty simple. A donor needs to have had coronavirus and then fully recovered. The liquid part of their blood, also known as the plasma contains antibodies which are produced to fight off the virus. And researchers say that if a persons plasma is rich in antibodies, it can be given to someone whose immune system is struggling, and that can then provide a vital boost of immunity. What is the evidence that this works for covid i9 patients . The food and Drug Administration in the us says the emergency use of plasma to treat Covid Patients is now allowed. Its not the same as a formal approval, but they are saying they believe the treatment appears to be safe. While it could be a life saver, the Scientific Community is pretty wary, warning that we dont have any definitive data that proves that it works. The nhs blood and transplant service says the study is coming from america are promising but not conclusive, and it is focusing on two major Clinical Trials which are looking into a range of covid treatments. Initial results are due out later this year, and so far, 16,000 people have donated their plasma. But with fears of a resurgence of cases this winter, it is hoped that more people who have recovered from coronavirus will consider taking part. Anna, thank you very much.
