Have to wait a little bit longer. We still have each other. It is not like, the end, itsjust a pause. So, instead of thinking of their own disappointment, they say they are spending their non wedding day thinking of others. Jon kay, bbc news. Now its time for a look at the weather with helen willetts. Good afternoon. This was north wales earlier this morning. We are under an area of High Pressure. And after such a wet winter, with 4 5 days of High Pressure, that is good news. Not altogether dry, with this weeks weather front lingering in the south bringing more cloud, as you can see early on and working on contrasting with the sunshine under the centre of that area of High Pressure to the north. We have some cloud in the east with shower stretching up through Eastern England up into eastern scotland. That weather front in the south bringing some drizzle. And that keen wind is making it feel colder than you would expect in mid march, but with the sunshine, that compensates. With the breeze continuing overnight and the cloud easing away in the south we should remain frost free, but for most of us remain frost free, but for most of us it is a cold, frosty night. Temperatures not as low as last night and not such a hard frost in the north, but still 5 in the glens, and even though that High Pressure slips eastwards away to scandinavia, that keane easterly wind will remain. At this time the sea is about as chilly as it gets so the wind will have a chill in it despite there being plenty of sunshine in the skies overhead for most of us. That breeze and that chilly start you like two seasons in one day. Getting into the afternoon, sheltered from the easterly breeze with the strengthening march sunshine, it will feel pretty pleasant, but in the south, still a little bit of cloud for devon, cornwall and the channel islands, but temperatures will creep a degree higher. As we go through tomorrow evening and overnight, we have a wea k evening and overnight, we have a weak weather front approaching the west threatening some sea haar but itll still be a cold and for some of us frosty night despite the fact that the nights are getting shorter, we had the spring equinox today. Slightly less breeze on sunday. Some sunshine away from the north and west. Feeling quite pleasant again with the lighter winds. As i mentioned at the beginning, this High Pressure stays with us into next week so again, lots of dry weather, some sunshine, picking up some folk in the morning, but that High Pressure look set to rule the roost. Thats all from the bbc news. Now we willjoin the bbc news teams where you are. Have a very good afternoon. Good afternoon, its 1. 30pm and heres your latest sports news. Another major sporting event has been postponed snookers World Championship wont take place next month now. Organisers hope to reschedule the tournament in july or august. Judd trump had been due to defend his title at the tournament scheduled to take place from 18th april to 4th may. So disappointment for him, but a more worrying time for players who arent so high profile. Earlier i asked World Snooker tour chairman barry hearn if any provisions have been made for the sports lower earners. We are looking at a behind closed doors in a sterile environment for a limited number of players, to keep them occupied and playing and learning. These are self employed people, they dont get paid when they dont play. And i know also that the governing body is looking ata that the governing body is looking at a size that their reserves and how they can help in the intermediate period, depending on the situation with the virus. The rugby season is officially over the rfu has confirmed all levels below the premiership has finished. Meanwhile, wasps have confirmed theyre cutting pay by 25 across the majority of the Rugby Department in response to the financial threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the club say lower paid staff will not be subjected to the cuts. The england football teams doctor Rob Chakraverty has left his role at the football association. Dr chakravertys position had come under intense scrutiny following revelations in a bbc Panorama Programme about his time as a medic at uk athletics, when he was involved in a controversial procedure on four time olympic gold medallist mo farah. The olympic flame has arrived injapan on a flight from athens. There was a scaled down ceremony at an airbase in the north of the country. There are growing doubts that the tokyo games can start as scheduled on july 24th because of the coronavirus pandemic. With the latest, heres our tokyo correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes japan seems to be doing quite a good job of controlling the epidemic here and because of that, the japanese government is saying, look, we are still full stea m government is saying, look, we are still full steam ahead for the 24th ofjuly. The torch relay will begin, as it is supposed to, next week and it will go on there is day relay around the whole of japan. They are still planning for all of this to go ahead, but i have to say there are many other voices here, many people as they can do, both expert, former government officials, the former governor of tokyo, who said to me, there is very little chance they think now that it can go ahead as planned on the 24th ofjuly because evenif planned on the 24th ofjuly because even if everything is under control here and even if the pandemic locally here injapan is well under control all over, what about the rest of the world . How can you hold the olympics when it is still carrying on elsewhere . So i think we dont know. There is a huge amount of uncertainty, we are waiting for both the ioc and the who and the japanese government to make a decision and at the moment they say it is still too early to make this decision and they are still going ahead for the opening ceremony. Thats all from me for now. Theres more on the bbc sport website including information around the return of match of the day this weekend. The chancellor is to announce today an employment subsidy package to try to protect millions ofjobs. Talks went on into the night with Business Leaders and Union Leaders to help haiti way for the government to help businesses. We have also been at number ten this morning and who is oui number ten this morning and who is our correspondent. Opposition parties have been meeting with the Prime Minister in downing street this morning ahead of the announcement about this employment support package. And now meeting with ian blackford. You met the Prime Minister, did he give you any more details of this employment support package . There has been some criticism already from opposition parties that perhaps he was preparing to go far enough. We have been told because it is market sensitive well have to wait till 5pm. The meeting went on in a good spirit, i have to say and it gave me the opportunity to impress upon the Prime Minister we have a Health Emergency and pr right in asking people to self and select isolate. There is a consequence to that, in the Hospitality Industry is in meltdown. I have expressed to the Prime Minister that there is a very real threat to our economy. In that sector, 1. 7 Million People in the uk working in Hospitality Industry and most of those people face the threat of redundancy. There is a possibility, and i will put it no more strongly than that, of a marked increase in unemployment of several millions unless we take the right action. Government have now got to step in as effectively as they should with a last resort to guarantee the salary of those workers to 100 . Lets get a message to those businesses that they should 110w to those businesses that they should now be shutting down, can exist as ta keaways, now be shutting down, can exist as takeaways, but for a three month period the government will pay the salary of all the workers in the Hospitality Industry. Based on 2016 numbers, that will cost them about £7. 6 billion. Eye watering sums though. We have already had billions of pounds pumped into the economy by the chancellor and you are suggesting all of these millions of people who will be affected should be paid for. The government has talked about that package, but the bulk of that art loans. I dont expect businesses to take up these loa ns expect businesses to take up these loans because they cant afford to and businesses have collapsed. We need to make sure that those workers dont go on to make sure that those workers dont go onto the unemployment register, but the Irish Government has already talked about potential job losses of government has already talked about potentialjob losses of 400,000. That is 17 of their work. If you did the same in uk, you would be talking about 4. 5 Million People potentially losing theirjobs. There are forecasts in italy and spain and france. Did you get an invitation from the Prime Minister he sees that as potentially. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of people potentially being laid off, but it could be a crisis of that scale of 4 Million People . but it could be a crisis of that scale of 4 Million People . I said to be Prime Minister that there are forecasts in lots of europe that there are unemployment levels around 30 ina there are unemployment levels around 30 in a lot of those countries. We have to take action today to make sure that doesnt happen. We need to have a basic income scheme to make sure we get money into peoples pockets that they can do the right thing and stay at home when they need to do it. The government has got to show leadership today. The chancellor of the exchequer has to recognise this is the opportunity to show people that they will be supported, to reassure them, that it will stop the cataclysmic client in unemployment during this situation. We need to make sure people are supported. If the government doesnt do some of the things that you are suggesting, including covering up to 100 of wages in some sectors, if the government doesnt do Something Like that today and does introduce universal credit income, we have seen additional measures to deal with the Health Aspects of the virus and do you think that the country are going to be under great strain in terms of the Economic Impact of the virus . This is the greatest crisis we have faced in terms of since the second world war. It is important that the Government Works with other governments, i hope that that continues, but it is important the Prime Minister is listening to the Prime Minister is listening to the evidence that is there and the threat to the economy, lets work together. I hope to do that and i hope chancellor has been listening to the evidence i presented to him this afternoon. Did you get the impression from other opposition parties as well that if that doesnt happen, people are prepared or more willing to be critical or is there a fear that this show of National Unity should not be under strain, should not crack . We have to be honest. In private and particularly with the Prime Minister, but to some extent in public as well, about the threats that are there, but it is done on the basis that we want the pie ministry to take the right action. To make sure that our workers who are self employed, or on zero hours contracts, that they can stay at home if they need to and that will be motivated by this government and we can stop this economy tipping over into something that will be catastrophic. We must avoid the kind of economic collapse that has been talked about elsewhere. It is within our gift to do that. This is about leadership. I will support our Prime Minister in taking the right action, that he has to listen and respond to the rest of the1. 7 to listen and respond to the rest of the 1. 7 millionjobs going on hospitality, the fact that there are in other industries. We have to do this today. I will support the government in doing the right thing. Ian blackford, thank you very much. In blatter, the leader of the snp and in westminster and we should get that announcement in a chancellor this afternoon. Labour have also been calling for more subsidies, perhaps in line with some of the Northern European countries, at 90 of his mrs are calling on the government to give them a vat holiday, give them a belief from National Insurance will stop the government is saying it will be an ambitious package. We willjust see how ambitious later on. The headlines on bbc news the chancellor is expected to announce new measures today to try to protect british jobs announce new measures today to try to protect britishjobs hit announce new measures today to try to protect british jobs hit by the pandemic. And people are being urged to shop sensibly as supermarkets continue to struggle to cope with panic buying. As the coronavirus pandemic spreads, theres been plenty of misleading advice online on how to tackle it. Chris morris has been Fact Checking some of the most prominent examples. We know what the experts say. Above all, wash your hands frequently to try to limit the coronavirus spread, but there have also been a variety of myth circulating on social media and elsewhere which are to health advice. Here are a few to ignore. Eat garlic to avoid infection. There is no question that garlic is a healthy food. The same goes for other fruit and vegetables, but the World Health Organization says there is no evidence eating garlic or anything else has protected people from coronavirus. Drink water every 15 minutes. Again, staying hydrated is good for you but that does not mean it can stop coronavirus. You get a virus like this when you breathe then. A there is no biological mechanism to suggest you can flush it out of your system by constantly drinking water. Myth number three, dont eat ice cream. The idea of avoiding ice cream or other cold foods can prevent the virus taking hold is totally untrue. Trying to heat your body to make an inhospitable environment for the virus will not work. We know the flow does not survive well outside the body during summer heat but we do not know enough about how that heat might impact the new coronavirus. Myth number four, drinkable silver, the use of colloidal silver, tiny particles of the metal suspended in liquid, has been suggested, but the clear advice from Health Authorities as it does not treat infections in the body or boost immunity and it could cause serious side effects like kidney damage, seizures or even turning your skin blue. The best advice in all circumstances, keep washing your hands. Chris morris with some good advice. Just some news n on the latest event to be called off a coronavirus a coronavirus outbreak a coronavirus outbreak and a coronavirus outbreak and it a coronavirus outbreak and it is a coronavirus outbreak and it is the a coronavirus outbreak and it is the Farnborough International airshow. They had announced with great regret that they are announcing the farmborough 2020 event, due to take place injuly, farmborough 2020 event, due to take place in july, is farmborough 2020 event, due to take place injuly, is cancelled. After careful consideration, the organisers say be unprecedented in that of the global coronavirus pandemic has forced us to make this decision in the interest of Public Safety a nd decision in the interest of Public Safety and that of staff. And that comes on top of Glastonbury Festival and eurovision are among the high profile events to be cancelled this week and Entertainment Venues across the uk have also been forced to shut their doors. Heres our entertainment correspondent, colin paterson. So this is the main auditorium were heading into . This is the main venue. How many people can get in here . For a standard show, about 350. Band on the wall, normally one of manchesters busiest music venues, but its shut. Normally there are people in the venue, it would have been full of flight cases and everybody working really hard. For the staff of 40, its a worrying time. If we dont have any shows to go on, we dont have any shifts to give to those people so yes, its incredibly worrying and heartbreaking. Have you had to make some difficult phone calls this week . Yes, really difficult phone calls. When a band cant tour, it means no work there behind the scenes team. Bombay bicycle club have cancelled their gigs, so melanie kott will not be running her merchandise stall. Its a stream of people losing work and losing work. We dont get paid if a gig doesnt happen. People are really struggling . Absolutely. Everyone from top to bottom is losing out. The music goes away, everything just disappears. With glastonbury gone and other festivals following, those who normally work at them are having to be creative to find employment. In my experience, theres a lot of logistics so delivery drivers for grocery companies, supermarkets, would be ideal, actually, but i quite like my fitness so im considering going with maybe like something along the lines of deliveroo. Theatres are also shut around the country, from londons Shaftesbury Avenue to small independent venues. Hope mill theatre in manchester was set up 4. 5 years ago on a £10,000 bank loan. Their musicals have won awards and transferred to london but the Success Story could be about to end. How worried are you . Oh, its been, um, its tough, its really tough. Its our livelihood, its all we know now and we certainly have not slept at all. We could probably stay dark till june but if anything else happens or if its a further delay, for us that would mean we probably would never reopen. The reality is that i think we all know inevitably that a lot of businesses and individuals arent going to survive this. However, there are signs of people trying to fight back. Tonight, the musical eugenius will be streaming online, viewers asked to donate to acting for others, a charity for those in the industry fighting financial hardship. And comedians are getting creative as well. Maddy anholt has had her next six months of gigs wiped out and lost £50,000 in sponsorship for her show at edinburgh. To try and recoup losses, she is doing virtual tutoring. One of my most popular courses is screenwriting an kind of to myself, hold on a minute, i can do this one online, probably more than an acting class and they are going really well. I dont think ill be able to get back what ive lost, but i can at least live and im kind ofjust doing it month by month. I know that im ok for the next two months and i dont know whats going to happen after that. Thats a feeling shared back at band on the wall, where the hope is that audiences will in time be allowed to return and here live music once more. Colin patterson, bbc news, manchester. Doreen, carol and dotty are three best friends in their 705 and 805 who cant bear to self isolate alone, so have decided to move in together. Since their first appearance on bbc breakfast, theres been a lot of support for them online. Jayne mccubbin has been speaking to them as they make their final arrangements before the big move. Before its too late, before the isolation is enforced, we had to try and meet. Listen, has anybody got a temperature or a cough . We havent either, i will come in. These women decided not to go it alone. Its the wrong choice of words for this time, but you have gone viral. So many fell in love with them and their spirit, their belief that friendship would help pull them through. Doreen was talking to me on the phone and i said to her, if we all have to go into lockdown, as i call it, for 12 weeks, they will find me dead. Ill be all cold and on the floor and a notice on, saying, i have died of loneliness. I said, well, you wont be on your own because come live with us and then we will be on our own together. And then dottie said, well, yeah, we could do that. I dont know what i would do without my friends. All of them, you know . Friendship is a wonderful thing. This is me with dark hair and young and thats dot with whatever is going on with her hair. We were, i would say, 28, 29. They have been firm friends for over 40 years, seeing each other through births, deaths, divorces, cancer. This virus wont keep them apart. And they always had parties, you know like kids now . They invite everybody. Well, we always have a party, dont we . How are you going to pass the time . What are you going to be doing . I have thought about this. We are doing an itinerary, arent we . We had an itinerary. I have got the chase, tipping point, carol has her colouring books and we will get some word search and we are going to get some jigsaws or something. You know what i mean . Im not selling this very well because it sounds like a laugh an hour, doesnt it . Yeah, i am not with it yet. They tell me that over home bakes, to a soundtrack of dusty springfield, rod stewart and jean pitney, they are going to keep each other safe. Are you scared . A little, maybe. It is quite frightening if you are on your own. But you are not on your own. No, no. As long as we do as we are told and look after each other and ourselves. Youre not an island, are you . No. You know, we are all in it together. We must never underestimate the value of friendship because i think you can have as much money or anything, but there is nothing like a friend. My mother used to say if she was talking about someone, its a shame for them. All they have got is money. When things are bad and you have got a friend and therefore you, you know, they cant make it any better, but it eases the pain. Their message, pick up the phone, get back in touch, check in on neighbours. If youre going past somebodys house and you know they are on their own, get them a way. Get them a way wave. Just to let them know it is notjust you and live in the world. I wish you well. I wish you well, i really do. We are just ordinary people. And you, jane. It has been great. Lets hope we all stay safe, then. Im sure you will and everyone is thinking of you. Thank you, thank you for cheering us up. We needed a bit of your joy in our lives now its time for a look at the weather with helen. It is the spring equinox today and although it was a pretty chilly it is dry for most, and we have got our slow moving weather front in the south. It has been around for several days and it is Still Producing a little vain for us. This is how it looked earlier in wokingham. There north, under the centre of that High Pressure we have got plenty of sunshine. A bit more clad for the Northern Isles as well and here is that cloud in the south. Still some breaks around, but it has been slow to clear, that it looks like it should do through the night. Whether it is that High Pressure and a keen wind, keeping temperatures a bit below par. A frosty start elsewhere. That brisk wind should keep the fast at bay for southern parts of england mostly, while elsewhere across the uk it is a cold night again. Not as hard a frost as last night, but still pretty chilly. And with that High Pressure with us throughout the weekend, that not only keeps our weather fronts at bay, but it will mean some Starry Nights and some cold nights to come as well. So although it looks dry for most of us, they will be plenty of sunshine i think, but at times some cloud will come and go and in the south in particular, quite a chilly wind. But even for the north sea coast as well, you have got that breeze coming off a relatively cold sea at this time of year, so it will still feel chilly at this time. Still a bit of cloud left across the far south, but more sunshine. For most of parts of the uk that is. Temperatures will creep up a degree elsewhere because it wont be as cold overnight. As we go to saturday night, we have got more cloud coming into the far north and west, so wont be as cold, but still a chilly night. Still some frost around. The nights are getting shorter at the moment, but they are still long enough for some frost. Sunday does bring a risk of clad for the east coast, but it should clear away and temperatures 9 11, but are still dealing chilly out of the cold start and with the breeze, but it is basically dry and if you are outside of the breeze in the sunshine it will feel pleasant. There is more on our website. This is bbc news. The headlines. Protecting millions ofjobs during the coronavirus pandemic will be the focus of the governments emergency package of measures to be announced later. More than 65,000 retired doctors and nurses are asked to return to work as the Health Secretary reassures nhs staff that theyll have the protective gear they need. In terms of getting the protective equipment out, the masks and the other protective equipment, that is a massive operation that is ongoing right now. Schools out the gates close this afternoon on schools across most of the uk but some will stay open for the children of key workers
