And the Glastonbury Festival is called off as is this years eurovision because of coronavirus. Good afternoon. Schools across much of the uk look set to close their doors and shut down by the end of the week the governments in scotland and wales have been first to announce their plans as part of the measures to tackle the coronavirus crisis. Borisjohnson says an announcement on the rest of the uk is imminent. Our correspondent lorna gordon is in glasgow. This announcement from the first minutes there was a short time ago. Nicola sturgeon made this announcement within the last hour. It is not entirely unexpected, there have been increasing reports of growing absinthe in schools and people keeping their children home. Nicola sturgeon said that this was one of the hardest decisions that the Scottish Government has had to make so far. As this virus spreads. She said in her view it was inevitable that schools and nurseries in scotland will close by the end of the week and that many schools have lost too many staff to continue. My view is that it is now inevitable that we will close schools and nurseries. And my planning assumption now is that schools will close to pupils at the end of this week and i wanted today to give parents notice of that now. There are two key drivers of that view. The first is the science. Scientific advisers are examining you advice as we speak, i expect that it you advice as we speak, i expect thatitis you advice as we speak, i expect that it is likely to tell us to close schools. Secondly, we have the reality of the growth, as people do the right thing and follow the advice to self isolate or isolate as advice to self isolate or isolate as a household, more and more in schools are approaching a point where they have lost too many staff to continue as normal. The criticism as we know of this move has always been that this means those trying to fight the coronavirus in hospitals are going to have children themselves. Yes. She said they are working on the finer details of how this will actually work in practice. They are putting in arrangements to address they are putting in arrangements to a d dress key they are putting in arrangements to address key issues. She described it as saying from x to schools will have a new purpose. They are looking at how they can mitigate the impact it will have on people and pupils taking exams and looking at how they can support vulnerable students who rely on Free School Meals and of course, they are trying to ensure that key workers, doctors, nurses, ca re that key workers, doctors, nurses, care workers and other critical staff ca n care workers and other critical staff can continue working through this outbreak. I think perhaps that will mean that some classes in some areas might stay open. It is not entirely clear yet, and clearly it has not been an easy decision to make. But it is not an unexpected one, the reason behind it or part of the reason behind it is to try and slow the spread of the virus. It seems unsustainable to keep the schools open and we get these updates every day of how many people have tested positive. We are told there are now 220 confirmed cases here in scotland. Thats an increase of 32 from yesterday on saturday, the news a third person has died in scotla nd the news a third person has died in scotland from covid i9. Our correspondent Hywel Griffith is in cardiff. The announcement that the Easter Holiday starts early . The welsh Education Minister was the first within the uk to make an announcement, the statement put out just after one oclock, i will review what she had to say. She said we are. From this friday, she went on. 0uts. §ifi§§ 3ting are what does that mean . Who will qualify . That is all yet to be cleared up. The first thought would go to nhs staff and potentially both pa rents go to nhs staff and potentially both parents if they are mother and father in the home might work within the nhs, handing kids over to grandparents is not an option for many families at the moment but there are many other people who want to know what will happen to them. Would they be able to make use of these facilities . People who are support workers in the community and people that are at care homes, will they qualify as front line workers and be able to make use of this . Childcare centres are not being close. It is important because people with very Young Children have gone back to work the last couple of yea rs, gone back to work the last couple of years, and it may not affect them. Another question is, once you close the schools, how long will it last . Ive asked the Welsh Government what this means in terms of timing, the fortnight School Holiday is being brought forward, so they will be closed for at least two weeks, will that road into the plan to meet easter break, we dont know, no one at the moment really knows, that includes the head teachers and working within the schools and obviously the parents. One other consideration is what will happen to the children who are not able to go into the schools in terms of checking their health. Is there an argument to me that they would be better off in the schools, thats what some parents have been saying. Thank you very much for the latest from wales. Just hearing that the education secretary is going to be making a stand in the commons at 5pm this afternoon and widely predicted to be announcing similar measures for the rest of the uk. That is 5pm this afternoon. The education secretary in the house of commons. Scheduled at the moment to be at the same time as he would have our News Conference from downing street. In other developments, the Prime Minister has promised more measures to help workers and tenants through the coronavirus crisis. He said there would be legislation to protect people renting in the private sector from evicton. He also said thered be a decision imminently on whether to close schools and promised to increase coronavirus tests to 25,000 a day. A grandfather, looking forward to his sons on my wedding. He had emphysema and on friday was taken to hospital in birmingham where he tested positive for the coronavirus. On monday, he died. Lots of people are taking this seriously and myself my husband my sons, everybody, all my husband my sons, everybody, all my family want people to know how serious it is and everyone must care for each other. Help the elderly, but also at the same time people need to take precautions for themselves. As many others make life changes during the outbreak, yesterday the chancellor announced a £350 billion package to help businesses and promised mortgage holidays for those in financial difficulties. But some politicians at unions that they my support is needed and suing for renters, the self employed, and those not on staff contracts. There are millions of renters staff contracts. There are millions of renters across staff contracts. There are millions of renters across the country and of course some of them will feel anxiety about this. The housing secretary will come forward very shortly to see a statement of how they will provide support for renters. I understand that people will have concerns about that. Emergency legislation is also expected to be put to apartment this week to give the government more power is to tackle the coronavirus. This could include temporarily closing airports and ports if there are staff shortages. The police would also be able to detain someone who is thought to be infected. And retired nurses and doctors could be brought back into the nhs. In the more immediate terms, some doctors are complaining they dont have enough protective equipment like masks. I am deeply wary because i am hearing from so many of my colleagues that they do not have checked equipment that they so desperately need to keep themselves and their patients safe. They are equally concerned for their families, just as we are and they are also worried that they are not being tested as they show symptoms. The Prime Minister insists the government is committed to supporting front line services. Government is committed to supporting frontline services. Our nhs staff should feel that they are able to interact with patients with perfect security and protection. So, there is a massive effort going on, culpable to the effort to build enough ventilators to ensure that we have adequate supplies for equipment, notjust here but throughout the outbreak. While we are told to socially distance ourselves from others, National Trust is planning to keep parks open free of charge so people can go outside. Testing free of cha sggiiggagtgle can go
