To world news today. President trump has urged americans to come together to eradicate anti semitism, after five people were wounded in a knife attack onjews celebrating hanukkah in new york state. The suspected attacker, named as grafton thomas, has appeared in court to be charged with five counts of attempted murder. The mayor of new york, bill de blasio, is set to announce new measures to combat anti semitism following a number of incidents in recent weeks. Chris buckler reports from washington. Members of new yorks largejewish community had gathered to celebrate their religion, only to be attacked because of it. They were at the home of a rabbi here to mark hanukkah, when a man forced his way into the house and started stabbing people, in some cases multiple times. He pulled out a knife and he started running to the left side, and i have thrown tables and chairs and shouted he should get out of here. The injured are still being treated in hospital and this community has been left scarred by the stabbings. Monsey is just north of new York City Police had stepped up patrols because of a series of anti semitic attacks in recent weeks, and across the us, thejewish community has raised concerns about an increase in hate crimes. Just over a year ago in pittsburgh, 11 worshippers were killed in a mass shooting at the tree of life synagogue. In april there was a similar attack at a synagogue in san diego. And another shooting earlier this month at a kosher supermarket in newjersey is also thought to be fuelled, at least in part, by anti semitism. What are we waiting for . First it was just verbal, and ok, but now we have people being murdered, being assaulted and stabbed. So the governor should announce an emergency in the state of new york. The new york governor seems to be listening. He said words were not enough and that it was time for action. It is domestic terrorism. These are people who intend to create mass harm, mass violence. Generate fear based on race, colour, creed. That is the definition of terrorism. Many claim hate is on the rise in an increasingly fractured america where differences too often end not just in division, but violence. Chris buckler, bbc news. Lets get more reaction to this now from armin rosen who is a Senior Reporter at tablet magazine a jewish news website. He is with us now, we heard it described as domestic terrorism, is that a description you agree with . think it is labelling these incidents as terrorism is maybe a little reductive. A lot of these attacks over the last couple of yea rs attacks over the last couple of years dont really seem to have any operational rink, they dont seem to be linked to any specific group, pa rt be linked to any specific group, part of the reason it has been so difficult is because it is a phenomenon on and that makes it worrying. Terrorism pigeonholes it ina way, worrying. Terrorism pigeonholes it in a way, it may not be entirely helpful but it does convey that people are very concerned and there isa people are very concerned and there is a sense of fear. Just how serious is a sense of fear. Just how serious is it . People have heard and know about an increase of patrols in the last couple of weeks and attacks over the last couple of years, just how different is the climate now . These attacks are happening in very orthodox communities, they are very resilient in a lot of respects, i dont think life has changed that much. People are still going to synagogue but there are more patrols in williamsburg, there have been a lot of discussions about how communities should counter this wave. There is a sense of fear that was not there a couple of years ago. We sought to date the Hanukkah Party continued after the stabbing. Not letting it ruin the way people live their lives. You mentioned a attem pts their lives. You mentioned a atte m pts to their lives. You mentioned a attempts to counter this wave, how do you counter it . I dont think anybody really knows. There is nothing organised driving these attacks that we can tell. There is a question of exactly what is the root of the problem and how do you attack it once you identify it, is the a nswer it once you identify it, is the answer more police, self defence training, more security at synagogues and schools . Is it a combination of all these things. There is no real answer to it and people cant even agree on why this is happening at all. People do know it is extremely upsetting and happening on a daily basis and as of what happened injersey city, it is now turned deadly. On a human level, when youre growing up, did you think in 2019 youd be sitting here having this conversation with me . Think in 2019 youd be sitting here having this conversation with me7m some respects know. It has been a very experience forjews in new york but on the other hand, there have been attacks visibly in new york for decades going back to the riots. There was an attempted incident seven 01 there was an attempted incident seven or eight years ago. If you talk to people in these communities, you find almost everyone has a story of street harassment or something. I think people in these communities will tell you this is just an exaggerated version of something that has been going on for them for a long time. Thank you for your thoughts. Us media are reporting that two people have been killed and a third critically injured in a shooting at a texas church. A witness said the gunman walked to the front of the church in the White Settlement suburb of fort worth during a service and opened fire. He was reportedly shot by a member of the congregation. At 9. 57 this morning White Settlement Police Department received a phone call of gunshots, specifically a patient with gunshot wounds here at the west Freeway Church of christ, when White Settlement pd and White Settlement Fire Department arrived on scene they did find a total of three patients that had been transported in critical condition. That does include what they believe is the shooter. A plane carrying former prisoners that were part of a swap between russia and ukraine has landed in the ukrainian capital, kyiv. There were emotional scenes as family members turned up to meet the men as they got off the plane at boryspil airport. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky was also there to meet the group. The full prisoner swap of 200 people took place between Ukrainian Government forces and pro russian separatists in eastern ukraine. President Vladimir Putin and president zelensky agreed to the exchange at talks in paris earlier this month. Lets speak to Evelyn Farkas in new york shes the former Deputy Assistant secretary at the department of defense for russia and ukraine and a candidate for us congress. The first thing we should say is there are lives at the centre of this and there were very emotional scenes as they were reunited and getting off the plane. But as that was happening, there was criticism of Volodymyr Zelensky for essentially giving away too much. Is that something you think he has done . I dont really think so, i think it was the right thing to do. This is the second major prisoner swa p this is the second major prisoner swap since Volodymyr Zelensky came into office. He promised that the ukrainian people he would get their prisoners back from the russian government, he is delivering his promise. It is not weakening his position, it shows he is a man of his word and that he is willing to compromise and come to some sort of deal with the russians. It puts the onus more on the russian government and president putin probably did this also to try and show he can compromise. I will let you follow up with the question. How does this actually move us further towards any kind of compromise . I still dont understand what is in the interest of president putin to compromise and change the state of affairs. It creates an environment that is more conducive for a compromise should the russian president decides he wa nts to the russian president decides he wants to compromise, which is highly unlikely. The reality is this president feels probably much more emboldened because everything that is happening in the us domestic situation with our president donald trump, essentially adopting the kremlin line which is to blame ukraine for the attack that russia perpetrated on us elections in 2016. 0ur president has succeeded in injecting that into our political dialogue which has weakened ukraine because the bipartisan support that ukraine needs in order to maintain its independence is softened. This is wonderful news for Vladimir Putin, we see he had a phone call with President Trump, we dont know what was discussed. I dont believe it was likely that President Trump put pressure on president putin to withdraw his forces from ukraine and come to a peace agreement. Thank you for speaking to us. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. The United States says it has carried a series of strikes against an iranian backed Paramilitary Group in retaliation for attacks on us forces in iraq. The pentagon says five sites linked to Kataib Hezbollah were struck in iraq and syria including sites in the qaim district. At least 15 fighters have reportedly been killed. A us tip off has helped russia foil terrorist attacks in saint petersburg. The kremlin says president Vladimir Putin phoned President Trump to thank him for the intelligence from us special services. Two suspects were arrested. Russia says putin and trump agreed to continue working together to fight terrorism. The authorities in the philippines say 41 people are now known to have died as typhoon phanfone devastated several islands. Tens of thousands of residents are still sheltering in evacuation centres where many celebrated christmas. A dozen people are missing. Tens of thousands of people in the australian state of victoria have been told to evacuate their homes, as bushfires intensify in the region. Officials have warned that monday will be extremely dangerous with temperatures of a0 degrees celsius combined with thunderstorms. Meanwhile, sydneys lord mayor has said the citys famous new years eve fireworks display will go ahead despite a call for the event to be cancelled. Phil mercers report contains flashing images from the start. Its arguably the worlds most dazzling fireworks display, but thousands of people want sydney to scrap its new years eve spectacular. They say it would be an insult and could traumatise some of those affected by the bushfire crisis. Sydneys lord mayor, clover moore, said she shared the deep sympathies of those whod signed the petition, but stressed that the fireworks were planned months in advance and most of the budget had already been spent. So, barring catastrophic fire conditions in sydney on new years eve, the event seems certain to go ahead. In between now and then, the authorities are warning of severe to extreme fire dangers across much of south eastern australia. Much of the heavily populated parts of australia, that include south australia, victoria, tasmania and New South Wales where more than 80 fires continue to burn. Dangerous fire conditions and extreme heat are forecast for south eastern australia from tomorrow. Phil mercer, bbc news, sydney. Stay with us on bbc world news. The latest headlines President Trump has urged unity in the fight against anti semitism, following a knife attack on the house of a rabbi in new york state, in which five people were injured. Ukraine and pro russian separatists have completed a long awaited prisoner swap with a total of more than 200 captives released. More than six months after the start of Anti Government demonstrations in hong kong, the city appears trapped in a stalemate between the protest movement that wont give up, and a beijing backed administration which refuses to meet its demands. The conflict has divided communities and families, and exposed tension between hong kongers and mainland chinese. 0ur correspondentjonathan head has been to see how the protests have now moved into areas frequented by mainland chinese. You can find a protest almost anywhere in hong kong. Here they are shutting down shops in a mall not far from the border. We are reclaiming our neighbourhood, they shout. Go back to mainland china. The police arrive, as expected, to retake the mall from the protesters. And find themselves confronted by a confusing mix ofjournalists and stranded shoppers. At first they tell everyone to move back, then there is a change of heart and they insist we take note of the damage done to the shop fronts. It is almost routine now that there are a few arrests and a bit of pepper spray to keep the media in line. Followed by a quick exit by the mainland traders with their tell tale roller suitcases. Hurried on their way by a shower of abuse from local residents. As the hong kong protests have run into weeks and months, the movement has broadened its targets to now include a whole range of grievances. Here, close to the border with china, is the proliferation of parallel trading, of mainlanders coming over to take advantage of cheaper and better products. Now the anger we have heard directed towards these small time traders is a long way from the lofty democratic ideals you often hear, but that anger and the fear for hong kongs identity isjust as important a driving force behind these protests. The mainlanders have been shopping here for many years and an entire local economy has grown to feed their demand, but many locals believe this doesnt benefit them. This man accuses the mainlanders of transforming the area, pushing up prices, he says, clogging the pavement with their suitcases and of killing the character of the neighbourhood. This fierce hostility both baffles and frightens the parallel traders who still come in numbers every weekend. Translation i dont understand, we are from the same country. We are compatriots, why do they try to exclude us . So here, the police are deployed to keep the shops open as well. Another thankless task for an already overstretched and increasingly unpopular force. Jonathan head, bbc news, hong kong. More now from our series now about young british people expressing their faith in unexpected ways. For darshil, playing the bagpipes is the perfect way to honour the teachings of his hindu guru. He leads his pipe band through the streets of north west england to showcase this unusual blend of scottish and hindu culture. When we go into the community to play they see us coming and they expect scottish people to be playing these instruments. But they see a full Hindu Community playing these instruments, their reactions are speechless, basically. So shocked. Like, who are these . Who are these . Im darshil, im a drum major and im a hindi. To me being an hindu is notjust coming to the temple, praying, its about taking all the teachings that our guru teaches us, and use it outside the temple in the community, spreading peace around the world. So, our guru came to the uk in the 1960s to spread the culture and religion, so when he came to london we had a parade held, a welcome for him, then we hired a pipe band for that parade and he really loved the sounds of the pipes, so he thought, why dont i start this in our community because he loved how they were well dressed, well disciplined, so he thought all this will help my youths in my Community Get stronger. It was a lovely day on sunday, this picture taken in somerset showing the blue sky and sunshine we had there. It is mild at the moment because this air is drifting in from the south west, we have cold it air out to the far west where the air masses meet. There is a weather front bringing patchy rain across North Western parts of scotland, perhaps a spot of rain or two later across Northern Ireland but much of the uk is looking dry. Clear spells across england and wales and we could see a touch of frost as temperatures get down to around three or 4 degrees. Perhaps a little lower in rural spots. Monday morning, High Pressure is a cross Continental Europe and a weather front across the north of the uk, bringing some rain to the Western Isles and aberdeen shire. Later some of that rain pushing into Northern Ireland and the scottish borders, some sunnier pressure conditions to the north but for england and wales, a dry day ahead. Most of the sentient will be across the northern half of the uk. Still reasonably mild. If you have plans to head out and see fireworks for new years eve, it is looking dry and clear. We can see a bit of mist and clear. We can see a bit of mist and fog but certainly no rain or strong winds.
