Good afternoon. A list of more than 1,000 addresses of new year honours recipients, including those of Senior Police officers and politicians, has been accidentally published by the government. The file was uploaded to the official website, but has since been removed. A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said the information was removed as soon as possible. He said leading figures from the world of entertainment, sport, politics and charity were recognised in the list. Sir elton john received the highest accolade hes been made a companion of honour and Olivia Newton john becomes a dame. Four members of englands World Cup Winning Cricket Team are on the list but of those receiving honours this new year, around two thirds are being recognised for their work within the community as Kathryn Stanczyszyn reports. Youre the one that i want. Olivia newton john says she is grateful beyond words to be made a dame for services to charity. A damehood, too, forformer tv presenter Floella Benjamin for her lifelong work with childrens charities. Volunteering always features heavily in honours lists, with many who arent household names being rewarded. Im no hero, i was lucky. Im here. All the heroes are dead and ill never forget them as long as i live. Thank you, darling. People like d day veteran Harry Billinge, who becomes an mbe in recognition of his efforts fundraising for veterans. When im doing this collection, a wonderful calm comes over me, because im doing something for the boys. Back in 2012, rhian manningss one year old son george died. Her husband paul took his own life five days later. She now runs a charity in wales to help those experiencing bereavement and is now an mbe. It still hasnt sunk in, i still cant believe it. Im pretty overwhelmed, i havent slept very much. Bittersweet in a way, but im extremely proud, i really am. In the world of politics, some controversy. The decision to award a knighthood to the former work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith has been criticised by opposition parties over his introduction of universal credit. And some questions over a damehood forformer director of Public ProsecutionsAlison Saunders after a number of scandals. In entertainment, there were knighthoods for two british film makers, steve mcqueen, who directed the oscar winning 12 years a slave, and sam mendes, who directed bond films skyfall and spectre. And in sport, eoin morgan, who captained england to victory in the cricket world cup, becomes a cbe. Ben stokes an 0be, jos buttler and joe root both mbes. An mbe also for england star jill scott, for services to womens football. 0ur correspondent, katy austin, had more on the leak of addresses of honours recipients. Well, the list of people set to receive honours in 2020 include a range of people from celebrities to sports people but also some figures in security, people who work in the police. And a Cabinet Office spokesperson has confirmed to the bbc that a version of that list of people receiving new years honours for 2020 was published in error and it did contain addresses. They say it was taken down as soon as possible, but i do understand it was Available Online for about an hour. The Cabinet Office has also said to us it apologises to all those affected. It is looking into how it happened. It has also reported it to the ico, the Information Commissioners Office and is contacting everybody affected directly. The family of a swedish man shot dead in south london on Christmas Eve say they are in a state of shock. Flamur beqiri was shot in front of his wife and young child. At least 70 people are reported to have been killed and 90 others wounded in a car bomb attack in the somali capital, mogadishu. It happened at a checkpoint at a busy intersection, during the morning rush hour. The mayor of mogadishu says, most of the injured are students, who were on buses at the time. Ben morris reports. The tangled wreckage of vehicles whichjust minutes before had been waiting at a busy intersection in the mogadishu morning traffic. The attack happened at a crossroads in the middle of rush hour, hitting locals on their daily commutes. Translation the blast took place as i was getting off a minibus. I was on my way to work. My leg was injured. Minutes later, chaos as the wounded are rushed to the nearest hospital. The mayor of mogadishu was sombre as the number of deaths climbed. Translation we do not have the exact death toll yet, but more than 90 people were wounded, according to the witnesses, however, the exact death toll will be given to us later, but it is not less. Most of the people who were killed in the attack were school or university students. This city is no stranger to violent attacks. Just this month, five were killed when Islamist Militant Group al shabab targeted this hotel which is popular with politicians and military officers, leading to a fierce gun battle with security forces. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast, but for citizens of this bustling capital city, it is a horribly familiar scene. In a moment we join viewers on bbc one for a round up of the Days National news with my colleague kate silverton. A mother whose husband and 2 children drowned, in a Swimming Pool, on the costa del sol, on Christmas Eve, insists they all knew how to swim. Olubunmi diya says they were dragged into the middle of the pool, and couldnt get out. The hotels operator said, exhaustive Police Investigations had confirmed the pool was working normally, and there was no malfunction of any kind. Our correspondent, helena wilkinson, gave me an update a short while ago on mrs diyas response to the police investigation. What she has said, it contradicts what the police in spain have been putting out in terms of information. Mrs diya has put out a statement saying she is disturbed by what she describes as inaccurate information. Initially, it had been reported that the father and their two children could not swim, did not know how to. She has said that is completely untrue, all three of them knew how to swim and she has given more detail about what happened on that day. She said the whole family, they have another daughter as well, the five of them went to the Swimming Pool. The children got in, they went down the steps and as you mentioned, she said the children found themselves dragged into the middle of the pool, which was deeper. Her husband went in to try to help the two children, she went off to get assistance and when she returned, she says all three were under water. In her words, she says, i believe something was wrong with the pool which must have made swimming difficult for them at that point in time. As you mentioned, the resort has put out a statement saying the police have done extensive investigations into the Swimming Pool, it was working properly and there was no malfunction ofany kind. Good evening. A list of more than a thousand home addresses of people receiving new years honours including police officers, politicians and celebrities was accidentally published by the government. The Department Responsible has apologised and said the information was removed as soon as the error was discovered. Our correspondent katy austin reports. Among more than a thousand people to receive an award in the new year honours list this year are celebrities and sports people but also senior politicians, police and security personnel. At some point last night a list containing recipients addresses was published, meaning some people were able to download the information. Many appeared to be personal addresses although no Contact Information appears for six ministry of defence staff. The document was discovered bya staff. The document was discovered by a member of the public. Staff. The document was discovered by a member of the publiclj staff. The document was discovered by a member of the public. I saw the new years honours list was coming out and wondered who was on it and went to the website and downloaded a file of all of the recipients, opened it up and it had full names and addresses of all the recipients including street numbers, names and postcode, everything. That was quite remarkable. A Cabinet Office spokesperson said. It is believed the document was online forjust it is believed the document was online for just under an it is believed the document was online forjust under an hour before being removed, but there are questions to answer about how it got there in the first place. Katy is here how serious is this . It does appear to be fairly serious, at the Cabinet Office has reported it self to the Information Commissioners Office, the information regulator, which has confirmed it will be making enquiries, and the fines for data breaches, although today big bucks have been reserved for breaches on a much larger scale, but it is embarrassing for the government and in the wrong hands this information could potentially pose a Security Risk to certain individuals. Thanks for joining risk to certain individuals. Thanks forjoining us. The hotel in spain where a british father and his two children died has insisted the Swimming Pool where they drowned was working normally. It comes after the mother of the children said all three could swim and has said there must have been something wrong with the pool. Helena wilkinson reports. It was in this Swimming Pool where on Christmas Eve a father and his two children got into difficulty and drowned. But exactly what happened is still not clear. Olubunmi diya, the wife of gabriel and the mother of comfort diya, thinks there was something wrong with the Swimming Pool something wrong with the Swimming Pool, but the resort where the family was staying issued a new statement disputing that, and it said the claims made by Olubunmi Diya were at odds with the findings of the police report. It said. The civil guard also said they had been told gabriel diya could not swim. A spokesman said his widow confirmed that to them, saying she had not seen him at swimming while they were together. But Olubunmi Diya insists her husband, son and daughter all knew how to swim, and she says her children went into the swimming for by the steps but found themselves dragged into the middle where it was deeper, and her husband jumped in to help, not long after all three were underwater. The police have described it as a tragic accident but the wife and mother of the victims appears to still have many questions as to exactly how this happened. Helena wilkinson, bbc news. Detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to come forward after a man was fatally shot in wandsworth, south west london, on Christmas Eve. Flamur beqiri was a Swedish National aged 36. His family said they are in a state of shock. No arrests have been made. At least 70 people are reported to have been killed after a car bomb exploded during morning rush hour in the capital of somalia. The blast took place at a checkpoint at a busy intersection in mogadishu. Around 90 people were wounded, many of them university students. Andrew harding reports. Moments after the blast, an eyewitness films the scene. Smoke still billowing from a vehicle, the remains of what is thought to have been a massive car bomb. Shocked civilians move in to look for survivors. The attack was timed to catch the morning rush hour in mogadishu. Many students had been heading to classes. Dozens were killed when the bomb exploded at a busy intersection in the somali capital. Attacks like this are not unusual here, but they are seldom so deadly. This man said the blast caught him as he was getting out of a minibus heading to work, his leg injured. Within minutes, emergency workers were at the scene. Somalia, plagued by violence for decades, is still wrestling with extremism. The countrys president quickly blamed the Islamist Militant Group al shabaab. He said their aim was to instill terror and to prevent the country from rebuilding. They will never succeed, he said. But this devastating attack is a reminder that somalias long journey from failed state to stable democracy is still a troubled work in progress. Andrew harding, bbc news. Campaigners are calling for a radical overhaul of britains railways to try to improve travel. The pressure group, campaign for better transport argues there should be a major fares reform, a Single National railcard and more control of Services Given to major cities outside london. Olivia richwald has the details. Tannoy the train to nottingham has been cancelled. Leeds station this morning where passengers faced delays and cancellations. Britains trains have been described as expensive, overcrowded and unreliable by the campaign for better transport, and today the group is calling for a radical overhaul of the way the railways are run. It suggests that franchises should be scrapped and fares reformed, but it doesnt estimate how much that would cost. Before todays report, the government was already considering big changes. Within the next few weeks the department for transport is expected to publish plans which it says will put passengers first and create a fairer and more effective system and that is something that people here in leeds think is overdue. There was a week about two months ago where i got about 14 trains that week and every single one was delayed by about ten minutes or more. Every time we have ever been on a train it has either been cancelled or delayed or it is so busy. If it is more effective to have it brought back into the council and they actually have control over what is going on i think that probably could be quite good. You need the service but you cant guarantee it. And that is the biggest frustration for me personally. Another suggestion is handing more control of the railways to cities and regions, something which has been welcomed by the mayor of greater manchester. If we had more control we could integrate the trains with our trams, buses, we could make it a london style integrated transport system, and that is what a city like manchester needs if we are to go up to the next level. It cant be right that it costs much more to travel around manchester than it does to travel round london. Meanwhile, train fares are due to increase by an average of 2. 7 in just three days time. Olivia richwald, bbc news, leeds. Cricket, and rory burns has given england some hope of chasing an unlikely target during day three of the first test against south africa. Adam wild watched the action. Where ever england travel, their barmy army follows, here more in hope than expectation, but on this centurion morning what they found was frustration, a sickness bug ravaging the england squad. South africa unsympathetic, extending their lead further and further. Jofra archer eventually found a way through but in the end it felt more like a blip, Quinton De Kock getting to grips with the best bowling england had to offer. Tempers getting frayed, ben stokes and stuart broad with a Frank Exchange of views, but they soon seemed to put it behind them. Stokes replaced broad and then he did this. That is how to settle an argument. The exhaustion of all that effort, though, obvious, for all of englands bowlers. Jofra archers fifth wicket of the innings greeted with only muted celebration. South africas final flourish taking their lead to 375. Time to rest and recover, there was a huge task ahead. It could have been tougher still had opener rory burns not been dropped before he really got going. When he did, he took england to 121 with the loss of only one wicket. He will be back tomorrow, and so, of course, will they. Perhaps now with just a little more hope. Adam wild, bbc news. Thats it. Were back with the late news just after ten past ten. Hello. This is bbc news with lukwesa burak. One of the world s rarest birds the spoon billed sandpiper has been successfully reared in captivity for the first time, raising hopes the species can be saved from extinction. Its taken almost a decade, from rescuing eggs in russia s far east wetlands to breeding 2 of the birds, at the wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in gloucestershire. Victoria gill reports. The first sign of a conservation breakthrough. These spoon billed sandpiper chicks, hatched from eggs collected in the far east of russia and brought into captivity in the uk. That rescue mission was eight years ago. Now, at last, those critically endangered birds have reared their own chicks the first ca ptive bred spoon billed sandpipers. We have to cover up our outdoor clothes, so everything from rubber boots that we can wash on the way in, to overalls, to this very attractive hairnet, because we do not want to be taking anything in there, into the aviary, where these very precious birds are, that might hurt them or make them sick. This is their breeding aviary that they now live in. I guess theyre kind of still babies, or are theyjust a few months old . Theyre classed as juveniles now. They wouldve been on their migration now, really. They would . Yeah, yeah, so. But we still see them as babies. Your babies. Yeah. This long mission, though, has been punctuated by highs and heartbreaking lows. Chicks first hatched here back in 2016, but they survived only a few days. Its taken just under ten years, and what feels like a lifetime of no sleep, to find the recipe, or close to the recipe, for breeding spoon billed sandpipers in an arc, in a captive situation. There are about 50 million other waterbirds that use the same places as the spoonies, so if we could save it and were starting to do so we can save a lot of other birds and plants and people who depend on the wetland sites where those animals survive. 2019 was the year that scientists put a very big number on the extinction crisis. A global report published this year estimated that around a million species of animals and plants are at risk of extinction. The loss of Natural Habitats in our human engineered environment is an increasing threat, so conservationists hope this will go much further than one charismatic little bird and that protecting the spoon billed sandpiper and the wetlands it depends on will prevent many other species from being lost. 60 years after ivor the engine first steamed onto our Television Screens his creators want to shunt him out of the retirement shed and onto the Silver Screen. The tales of the small Steam Locomotive were inspired by the poetry of dylan thomas and created by hand, in a cow shed. Tomos morgan reports. Snow was falling in the top left hand corner of wales. Ahead of its time, it was one of the uks first tv cartoons. Are you ready, ivor . Ivor toots his horn. Some may remember the adventures of the small green Steam Locomotive who worked for the merioneth and Llantisilly RailwayTraction Company limited in north wales. Snowdrifts lay deep on the railway line, but ivor charged through them and split them like meringues the programme was the brainchild of the late legendary animator oliver postgate, who wrote the scripts, filmed the scenes and voiced many of the characters, along with artist peter firmin for a budget ofjust £10 a minute. My dad would put them together using blu tack. Youd move the foot along, take a photograph. Nowadays, digital animation costs a fortune, with High Tech Computers and Sophisticated Software bringing creations to life in 3d. Ivor the engine, however, was made using paper and cardboard cut out watercolours in a Farmhouse Barn in rural kent. He wanted to find a way of animating which didnt involve too much of people walking around, because that was difficult to animate. So ivor was quite good, because he had wheels. Edwinjones, we have an emergency eli the baker is out of flour a friendship with a welsh fireman fondly described how steam engines came to life when you rode on them, and there were strong welsh influences throughout. Ivor toots his horn. He came up with the idea that there was a Steam Locomotive who wanted to sing in the welsh choir, and that was the starting point. He loved under milk wood and dylan thomas and he loved the whole magic and feel of how he felt about wales. Oh, dear although he probably wasnt the most famous cartoon train that graced our tv screens, ivor was the inspiration for oliver postgates more successful titles. Yawns. Such as bagpuss. Bagpuss gave a big yawn and settled down to sleep. After the success of daniels recent remake of the clangers another of his fathers classics on the 60th anniversary that ivor first hit television, could there finally be a comeback, but this time to the Silver Screen . I was interested in the idea of a live action story of ivor, because i think although it is a childrens programme, it also has a lot of interesting characters. But you need to find lots of money to do things like that ivor felt really happy. So, after over half a century, it may not quite be the end of the line for ivor, jones the steam and dai the station. As he pounded down the line. Time for a look at the weather with phil avery. Hello. The weather is in no great rush to change at the moment. What you have got pretty much will do you probably for the rest of the weekend. And if your weather happens to look anything like this, that will not come as great news. It is not wall to wall misery by any means at all. There are some gaps in the cloud, the borders faring quite well, anywhere to the eastern side of the pennines, because there the south to south westerly flow has a chance of breaking up the cloud as it moves over the higher ground, so the North Eastern quarter of wales, the eastern side of the pennines, in one or two spots, could fare quite nicely, but further north there is a weather front around, it has brought rain already today. It will continue to do so during the course of the night, the wind noticeable, too, across the North Western quarter of scotland where it will stay pretty mild overnight. Further south and east there is a chance there will be some gaps in the cloud later on in the night. Despite the fact we are all engulfed in this relatively mild swathe of air which extends across, as you see, much of western europe, there is just the chance, as we get on into sunday, that we may see more in the way of gaps in the cloud, particularly across the south eastern quarter of the British Isles. The front is still there to be had, the thicker cloud across the north and north west of scotland but as you come further south, lots of dry weather on sunday and there is a chance of an improving picture with regard to the amount of sunshine across the east midlands, lincolnshire, east anglia, perhaps parts of the south east. Temperatures here not spectacular, at their highest, perhaps 13, 1a, 15 degrees if you get a little bit of brightness, somewhere like the moray coast. On monday, and as far ahead as that, the only significant change is to drag this weather front further south, just seeing signs of the air coming more from the north west, behind that weather feature, so if youre close to it, you will get cloud and rain but later in the day, perhaps something brighter. On tuesday, that weather front will have worked its way across the whole of the British Isles and eventually we will see things turning cooler and fresher, but ahead of that front on monday, across the south, there is an indication we could see drier, brighter conditions. If you have a plan for new years eve, it should be mostly dry. There could be just a touch of fog. Hello, this is bbc news with lu kwesa burak. Nasa has unveiled its latest Martian Rover ahead of a seven month Maiden Voyage to the red planet, scheduled forjuly. Fueled by a mini nuclear reactor, the car sized rover will search for traces of past life in an area thought to have contained rivers and a lake some 3. 5 billion years ago. Briony sowden has more. Meet nasas latest rover set to become mars newest resident in 2021. Unveiled in pasadena, it will sniff around the red planet and perhaps lay the groundwork to send humans into deep space. This is a mission that will launch injuly of this year and get to mars in february of 2021. Its designed to seek the signs of life so we are carrying a number of different instruments that will help us understand the geological and chemical context on the surface of mars. The rover will spend two years collecting samples that will be brought back to earth on later missions. On board are more than 23 cameras and equipment which turns carbon dioxide, which makes up more than 95 of the martian atmosphere, into oxygen which could be crucial to future human relations. Its final destination on mars is a large crater which scientists believe could hold signs of past life forms. With such big ambitions, extra precautions have to be taken including a thorough decontamination for all the journalists invited. We are trying to find past signs of life and we dont want to find something we bring, obviously, so we need to make sure that youre not bringing bacteria and stuff that could survive the flight to mars and thrive in that atmosphere. We dont want to find that. If successful, the mars 2020 rover will become nasas first probe fifth probe to land on mars and it already has a companion. It willjoin the curiosity rover, which has been roaming the landscape since 2012. Nasa will ship the rover to its Kennedy Space center where the three sections will be assembled before take off, scheduled forjuly. V a dundee was the spectacular location for a show that took in everything from Artificial Intelligence to facial recognition. The museum not only celebrates the past but also looks to the future. Most peoples idea of robots are shaped by the robots they see in science so in a film or tv or video games or music. But robots are a bit more real than what we think. So most children now will now grow up with siri or alexa or some kind of smart helper in their life and i think in the future thats just going to increase. Were going to have more robotic helpers helping our children and helping us and increasingly more and more in an everyday basis. Currently on display is the exhibition design between human and machine. So rather than robots coming in and replacing us and replacing our jobs, i think the future is a bit more of an optimistic one. Weve got an amazing Structure Commission thats being specially built here for v a dundee and this is all by the idea of humans and robots collaborating together to create something amazing and wonderful and i think thats a bit more what the future will be like, so, slightly less pessimistic than what we imagine. In recent years, dundee has become something of a digital powerhouse. Its synonymous with video games like lemmings, grand theft auto and yes, minecraft. Dundee has the honour, we believe, of being the city in the world with the highest per capita volume of games developers. Thats come around for a number of reasons. It started off back in the 1980s, there was a lot of us programming away on sinclair spectrums that happened to be made in the city, so you could always pick one up ex factory when they went slightly wrong for less than they cost in the shops. Some amazing video games came out of the city at that point and that gave a lot of us the inspiration to set our own companies up. The worlds first video games degree was offered here by Abertay University all the way back in 1997, so we thought wed check out some of their more recent work. All in the name of social interaction, of course. Why is Abertay University so hot on gaming . At abertay, all the staff have either previously made video games or we currently make video games and we are all part of a research lab called Abertay Game Lab that make really fun, experimental games that push the boundaries of Computer Gaming in different ways. So youve got some other students playing some other of your games over there. That game was created by dr mona bozdog who sloped on with lara. Now, mona, there are a lot of different games here, all telling interesting, different stories. Can you tell me a bit about what youve created here. Yes, so, the game you see is called assembly. Were all in dundee and the year is 1981 and theres thousands of women in the timex factory assembling the first ever computers, so the zx81 and the zx spectrum. These computers changed the face of games. Thats basically a recreation of the assembly line. So we have the women workers trying to assemble the Zx Spectrum Computers from populating the boards to actually packaging and shipping the zx spectrums. This is a actually a bit of social history here as well, isnt it . Yes, it is. It is what we usually call herstories. Because theyre the alternative histories, theyre the Hidden Figures of the video Games Industry and the video games history, and it was the women who assembled, they were tremendously skilled and they basically brought us the first computers. This eerie, stifling hot landscape looks otherworldly but in reality, were a couple of hours drive north of los angeles. Professor Annalu Waller has dedicated 30 years of her life to researching technologies to improve communication for those who have difficulty speaking. Its very much like the predictive text on your phone, but, as we saw when we invited her onto the stage. It can be a very slow process. Actually telling a story in real time is laborious, time consuming. A lot of our focussed communication aids only type 8 10 words a minute. How on earth do you conduct a real conversation in that speed . Annalus team, in partnership with cambridge university, has created a new system that remembers what youve typed before and offers up whole sentence chunks in one go. Its hard to find whole sentences to use as i speak. So, as humans we always tell stories. So what im telling you now, ive told many people before. And this is where it gets even more clever. A Body Worn Camera observes where annalu is and who shes speaking to. It can then suggest sentences that are relevant to that situation. So, this is the Computer Vision brain behind our system. The camera ive got in my right hand here is the one the person wears around their neck, so the camera can see what they can see. And it can see the person, they are speaking to, so at the moment it sees me. And you can see on the screen it picks out my face to identify whether im a known person, whether im a friend, and if it knows me, who i am. It takes a guess from the whole environment it can see to say where are we . Are we in a cafe, at work . And this information we then use to predict the right sentences i might want to say in this environment with this communication partner. The more annalu uses it, the more it learns and the faster the system becomes. And the system might think were in a museum, im talking to a ive never met before. That might be an opportunity to talk about my work, so it will bring up sentences ive used before to talk about my work so i can access them timely. Stories are really important because they provide the fundamental essence of being human. We are our stories. We are all very talkative people. Laughter i mean i know people who repeat themselves over and over again. We all do laughter i mean i know people who repeat themselves over and over again. Laughter we all do laughter and applause back inside, and a click live show wouldnt be a click live show without waving, and generally getting a bit overexcited. All that remains is to thank everyone who turned up to see us live and of course you at home for watching. From all of us here at click, we hope you have a very happy new year. Go, go, go yes, yes, yes hello. This is bbc news, im rachel schofield.
