Of more than 1,000 people receiving honours this new year, around two thirds are being recognised for their work in the community. One of those is rhian mannings, who has received an mbe. Her one year old son george died from a seizure. Then, just five days later, her husband paul took his own life. Rhian went on to set up the charity 2 wish upon a star, which helps families dealing with the sudden death of a child or young adult. Heres rhian talking to Prince William about grief and loss, before she ran the London Marathon in 2017. You try and understand your emotions a lot more than probably someone who has lived life without any issues and that is quite critical because explaining what those emotions mean because once you start rationalising them, i because once you start rationalising them, lam really because once you start rationalising them, i am really angry, because once you start rationalising them, lam really angry, im down, then you can kind of rationalising and deal with it. Like you said, the shockis and deal with it. Like you said, the shock is the biggest thing. I still feel 20 years later, i still have shot within me. People go shop cannot last that long but it does, you never get over it. It is such an unbelievably big moment in your life, it never leaves you. You just learn to live with it. Rhian joins us now from our cardiff studio. Lets say it out loud, mbe, how does that sound . Lets say it out loud, mbe, how does that sound . It still has not sunk in. I still cannot believe it. I am pretty overwhelmed. Bittersweet in a way but i am extremely proud. That is such an apt description because you must have such mixed feelings. What brought you to the campaign you are now involved in four people who are now involved in four people who are not familiar with the story . When you take us through what happened those terrible times . Back in 2012, my one year old son, george, died suddenly in an emergency unit in south wales. Despite the amazing stuff who looked after us, we left the hospital, nobody phoned us, checked on us and five days after losing george my husband went on to take his life, traumatised by what we went through and still there was no one there to look after myself and my other two children. You wanted to make sure no one felt the way you did then . Absolutely. Paul wasntjust no one felt the way you did then . Absolutely. Paul wasnt just the best, george, we had everything and we we re best, george, we had everything and we were a perfect family and it was just taken away and i cannot believe that when you have children and the reason so much support around you but one of your children one minute laughing and smiling, once they pass away, there is nothing and i decided idid not away, there is nothing and i decided i did not want another family to be torn apart like ours and that is when the journey started. What was the turning point for you, firstly in dealing with the grief at the time and event kind of breaking out somehow from that moment which mustve been utterly overwhelming . For a long time i was in shock anyway. I have always been a positive person and their lives had to matter. I just positive person and their lives had to matter. Ijust started raising a bit of money for our local community and never in a billion yesterday we re and never in a billion yesterday were think it would become what it has today and that is because of the support we have received from our community, from the people of wales and the belief people have had in me and the belief people have had in me and my team. There was never a moment, ijust and my team. There was never a moment, i just thought that make this will destroy me if i do not turnit this will destroy me if i do not turn it into something positive. I could not be bitter and angry and thatis could not be bitter and angry and that is where it started. Today it is an all Wales Organisation helping so many people who deserve it. So lovely to see a smile on your face as you talk about the bike. You have as you talk about the bike. You have a daughter and a son . They are ten and 11. My daughter is wrong, she would not be happy about that. They are my everything and they have been days i have struggled to be a mum to them but they have kept me going and this award is really for them because they have had the hardest few years of their life and have no idea what they have been through, really. They do know now, when we able tell them, how did they react . We told them on a christmas day. I did not want them to read it in the papers or here it secondhand so we we re papers or here it secondhand so we were sitting around the dinner table and we told them. They are young and did not understand but they really we re did not understand but they really were so pleased. I think they are proud. I do not think they have any idea what the last seven years has thrown at them one day the wheel and they are amazing Little People to keep me going every day and i know paul would be so proud of everything they have become. I know that this isa they have become. I know that this is a wonderful thing, to have an award but something tells with the biggest reward you get will be from the people you are now helping . Yes, asi the people you are now helping . Yes, as i said, it is bittersweet. I would give back any award to turn back the clock for me and the children by the amount of messages i have received, i have never set out to do it for any award. I do it because my boys memories and legacy andi because my boys memories and legacy and i have had lovely messages from family who we are supporting who really did deserve it and without two wish upon a star that would not have received anything. It is bittersweet but i will enjoy the moment and maybe have a little bit ofa moment and maybe have a little bit of a celebration later. It is well deserved and have a great afternoon or evening however you wish to celebrate it. Thank you so much and happy new year to everyone. What an incredible woman. It is a joy to see the smile on her face after what she has been through. Just amazing. Heres susan with a look at this mornings weather. And what the weather has in store for the run up to the for the run up to and what the weather has in store for the run up to the new good morning. Good morning. It is actually quite quiet but on the plus side, if you have got plans to travel, i think the mild weather will at least not hamper you but pretty murky so tomorrow it could look a little brighter than today but if you are heading out in the next few hours anywhere across central and eastern england, quite dense patches of fog. Basically we are pulling the air across the uk from a good way south west, also almost from the azores. A lot of moisture in the air. It is a great picture for one reason or another for most of us to the north and west, the weather fronts will bring rain and for central and eastern areas it is a lot of low cloud and gloom. Even when the fog rises. In some spots the fog could stick around into the afternoon. Sunshine, probably towards the west on the breeze example little bit this afternoon, parts of the south west, north wales, Northern England and around the moray firth will do that as well, some shelter in the south westerly wind but you can see western scotland sees the rain becoming more extensive as we move through the afternoon but look at the temperatures late december and we are in double figures across the board. Overnight, some of the fog will thicken across england and wales, white murky for Northern Ireland and more rain on the way for Central Scotland for a time but it should become dry here by the end of the night and then look at those temperatures northern scotland, overnight, 10 degrees. It is very mild in fact, overnight, 10 degrees. It is very mild infact, you overnight, 10 degrees. It is very mild in fact, you can see this little band of dark orange on the map here behind me indicating where we are pulling the warm air from, all the way from the azores and just the contrast really from what we would expect more typically at this time of year. Tomorrow, there is a hope we could mix in drier airfrom the continent across england and wales that could in turn allow some more fun trying to show show itself. Northern ireland and scotla nd itself. Northern ireland and scotland possibly the driest and brightest spots of the rain for the northern and Western Isles but around the moray firth tomorrow afternoon, positively balmy, up into the midteens in spots 10 11 to the southis the midteens in spots 10 11 to the south is still above average for the time of year. And on into the new week as we approach new year, well, still mild on monday but temperatures start to slide away through new years eve on tuesday as we start to bring the weather in from in or northerly direction but still dry weather around for new years day, still dry weather around for new yea rs day, and still dry weather around for new years day, and also i think for new years day, and also i think for new years eve eve, if you like, a lot of dry weather to come but it could again be missed end that causes problems as everyone is out there trying to see those fireworks. The fireworks themselves, the particles from them, tend to seed the mist and fog so if you are travelling somewhere first thing i new years day, it could be a big issue as well but we are a little way but we are a little day, it could be a big issue as well but we are a little way off from just yet. Good advice i never knew that. It is 18 minutes past seven. 60 years after ivor the engine first steamed onto our television screens, his creators want to bring him out of the retirement shed and turn him into a film star. The tales of the small Steam Locomotive were inspired by the poetry of dylan thomas and created by hand in a tumbledown cow shed. Tomos morgan reports. Snow was falling in the top left hand corner of wales. Snow was falling in the top lefthand corner of wales. The of its time, it was one of the uks first tv cartoons. Are you ready, ivor so many remember the adventures of the small green Steam Locomotive. Snowdrift lay deep on the railway line but ivor charged through them and split them like meringue the programme was the brainchild of the late legendary animator Oliver Postgate who wrote the script, film scenes and voiced many of the characters, along with artist peter furman. For a budget of just £10 a minute. My dad would put them together, using blue truck. He would move the foot along, take a photograph. Nowadays digital animation cost to fortune with High Tech Computers and Sophisticated Software bringing creations to life in 3d. Ivor the engine however was made using paper and cardboard cutout watercolours in the Farmhouse Barn in rural kent. He wa nted the Farmhouse Barn in rural kent. He wanted to find a way to animate which did not involve too much of people Walking Around because that was difficult to animate so ivor was quite good because he had wheels. We have an emergency the bakery is out of flower. A friendship with a welsh fireman fondly described how steam engines came to life when you wrote on them and there were strong welsh influences throughout. He came up with the idea that there was a Steam Locomotive who wanted to sing in the welsh choir and that was the starting point. He loved dylan thomas and he loved the whole magic and feel of how he felt about wales. Although he probably was not the most famous cartoon train that graced our tv screens, ivor was the inspiration for Oliver Postgates more successful titles. Such is bagpuss. Bagpuss gave a big yawn and settle down to sleep. After the success of daniels recent remake of clangers, another of his fathers classics, on the 60th anniversary that ivor first in television, could they finally be a comeback but this time, to the Silver Screen . |j they finally be a comeback but this time, to the Silver Screen . I was interested in the idea of a live action story of ivor because i think although it is a Childrens Programme it also has a lot of interesting characters but you need to find lots of money to do things like that. So, after half a century, it may not quite be the end of the line for ivor, jones the steam and the station. As he pounded down the line. Tomos morgan, bbc news. A lot of people would be very happy and looking forward to that 21 minutes past seven. Fallon sherrocks historic darts World Championship run came to an end yesterday with a third round loss to chris dobey, but her performance has certainly made waves in the sport. Something tells me, in a way, it is only the beginning the 25 year old has been described as a trailblazer and praised for breaking down barriers after she became the first woman to win a match at the tournament. Fallonjoins us now from our london newsroom. A very good morning to you, grinning from ear to ear talk us through last night because you went up ahead twice and it looked like you are going to get through to the next round good morning, yeah, i really enjoyed last night. It was an incredible atmosphere again and yeah, iwent incredible atmosphere again and yeah, i went to and up and he just came back at me and ijust really enjoy the game, i mean it was so nip and tuck under brilliant game and im glad and tuck under brilliant game and im glad i put in a great performance for everyone. What strikes me every time we have watched you play darts is how relaxed you look at how much, as you say, you look like you are having a great time yeah, i am enjoying every minute of it. I got up on that stage every game and i have loved every minute of it and i have enjoyed it and i have just stayed calm and i have done it and it is an experience that i will never forget and like experience that i will never forget and like i said, i have enjoyed it so much. When you came through the first round became the first woman in history to make it that far. Did you feel that sort of weight of expectation, the weight of history, or was itjust expectation, the weight of history, or was it just another game . Expectation, the weight of history, or was itjust another game . To me it wasjust or was itjust another game . To me it was just another game. Obviously, i have the weight on my shoulders a nyway i have the weight on my shoulders anyway going into the first game because everyone was trying to expect, like, trying to get this first history making win so i did not, when i went into the game, i was like i am not going to think about that or anything like that and then after i did it, i think there was more expectation after that but idid not was more expectation after that but i did not put any pressure on myself and just kept taking each game as it comes and i enjoyed every game i have played. And then you got through to the next round and it was like the entire crowd was there for you. Yeah, i mean, the crowd has been amazing and i have never had so much support, i have never had people chanting my name. It is definitely an experience i will never definitely an experience i will never forget. And billie jean king, stephen fry, gabby logan, among the famous people offering their congratulations, saying that you have stolen the hearts of millions. Ina sense, have stolen the hearts of millions. In a sense, you have become an overnight household name. What is that like . Yeah, i mean, it is incredible, an amazing feeling, i mean, i never, everthought that people like that will be like contacting me congratulating me or anything like that and it isjust incredible, like, an amazing feeling andl incredible, like, an amazing feeling and i am so proud of myself and proud of what i have achieved an achiever like the sports in general. It only has two mint women in the tournament at the moment, do you think that is correct . Should be opened up to more women should be based purely on your capacity, whether you are in your spot . |j based purely on your capacity, whether you are in your spot . I am hoping, obviously, like, they look into it a bit more and maybe even four women because there are more women who can play standard, if not better, but we just need more opportunities to prove ourselves and show that we can beat the men and i mean if we had four women in it, just say, you would probably see more of us beating the men and more shocks and it would be great entertainment. You have achieved five 180 is, the World Championship record, in the female championship. How do you maintain that concentration under that under pressure . Experience i have had. Obviously i have played on stages and stuff before in front of crowds so during my practice routines and all of that, i am mentally focusing myself as well. So when i am hitting the one 80s, i focus myself for it soiam the one 80s, i focus myself for it so i am trained. And you have a five year old son, rory. How has he react to your success . He has loved it. He is loving it, youre so happy for me, i mean, over christmas we we re for me, i mean, over christmas we were talking about it and he was so excited watch me again and i cannot wait to get home and see him again. Rory has autism and you said you will donate the board that you played with for auction for the National Autistic society. Yeah. I think it ends in a few days and we have raised a lot of money so far so hopefully it can continue to get up and hopefully more people bed. Congratulations, fallon, an inspiration to all of us. Thank you. I love seeing those scenes when she is getting those wins. The crowd are absolutely loving it. It is phenomenal, i was flying back from ireland yesterday in the airport and she was playing at the time and eve ryo ne she was playing at the time and everyone was crowded around, people who were really not fans, she has transcended it, billie jean who were really not fans, she has transcended it, Billiejean King tweeting about her she is so relaxed super cool she gets into the zone, i imagine you have to be very focused. Winning the second round but with a bulls eye . Very focused. Winning the second round but with a bullseye . They make it look easy. They certainly do. What do you have for us . It was another dramatic night in the premier league, and one that will give liverpool fans more reasons to believe the 30 year wait for a league title could nearly be over thats because wolves fought back from two goals down to beat 10 man Manchester City. Pep guardiolas side are now 1a points behind the leaders who have a game in hand. Patrick gearey reports. Fights with wolves rarely end well. Was this the exhausted end of a title defence . 1a points behind liverpool. The last thing Manchester City needed was this goalkeeper ederson sent off inside 12 minutes. Then it got confusing. First, var saw this as a foul on riyad mahrez. City penalty, Raheem Sterling to take. But wait. The man behind the monitor spotted gold shirts in the area. Retake, stirling again. And again. One out of three would do. You could hear what wolves fans thought of that, and their mood wasnt improved when sterling surged once more. This time, he only needed one go at it. But the ten men were tiring and in that state, the last opponent you want to face is adama traore. He smashed wolves back into this, then refused to give city a moments peace. Here, Benjamin Mendy lost the battle, rauljimenez did the easy bit. 22. City wheezed, their fight finally gone. In the 89th minute, matt doherty wound up the knockout blow. A second wolves win over city this season one that might turn the title race into a liverpool lap of honour. Patrick gearey, bbc news. The last previous two seasons we are used to winning a lot of games and being there at the top and fighting and now we are far away so we have to adjust mentally to the situation. And prepare the next games, you know, for the premier league, and because the game, after 70 minute change up, changed everything. Former Manchester United and sweden striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has returned to ac milan on a short term deal until the end of the season. He was a free agent after leaving la galaxy at the end of the mls season. Ibrahimovic spent two seasons at milan from 2010, but the seven Time Champions League winners are having a poor season. They are currently 11th in the table after losing their last match 5 0 at atalanta. England midfielder Izzy Christiansen has returned to the Womens Super League after announcing that shesjoined everton. Christiansen moves to merseyside from the european champions lyon on an 18 month deal. She scored five goals in 26 games for the french side since making the move from Manchester City. Christiansen actually began her career at everton before moving to birmingham, 10 years ago. England test captainjoe root is one of five players from englands world cup winning one day Team Honoured in the queens new year honours list. Currently on tour with the test team in south africa, root has been made an mbe. Very privileged and a bit humbled, to be honest, to be receiving an award like that. I think when you play cricket, youre part of a team and, you know, you rely on 11 other blokes and a huge support staff and players around the squad to influence a game. And without those people around, your individual successes along the way dont really mean anything its all about collectively doing Something Special. Good news for root on that front but on the pitch, his england side are facing defeat in the first test against south africa. The hosts will resume at 8 oclock this morning on 72 4 in their second innings a lead of 175. Thats because englands batting collapsed again yesterday. They lost their final seven wickets of theirfirst innings for just 39 runs. Vernon philander taking 4 16 as england slumped to 181 all out. England took quick wickets of their own as south africa were reduced to 29 3 in their second innings. But although they lost Faf Du Plessis late on, they ended the day with a healthy lead. One bad piece of news for the hosts, though their opening batsman Aiden Markram has been ruled out for the remainder
