Spending your money this year. Good morning from Blenheim Palace and youre listening to the oxford gospel event choir. Alice in the palace here, some wet weather but mild compared to as of late. More details later. Its monday, december 23rd. Our top story there are calls for a government inquiry into racism in football. Its after the Chelsea Player, Antonio Rudiger, complained of racist chanting during yesterdays premier league match at tottenham. The professional Footballers Association said it was disgusted by the reports, and insisted urgent action was needed. Heres our sports correspondent, andy swiss. It was a day english football was once again overshadowed by racism. Chelseas Antonio Rudiger clearly showing hed heard abuse from the crowd an hour into his teams game against tottenham. He informed his captain, who in turn told the referee, and after he spoke to both managers, for the first time in the premier league, a warning was made over the public address system, twice repeated. Announcer racist behaviour among spectators is interfering with the game. Please remember that in football, there is no place for racism. At the end of the match the chelsea skipper explained what happened. Toni came to me and he told me that he was listening in the crowd monkey noises, and obviously myjob as a captain is to come straight to the ref and to report it. Now its under investigation, and we have to work all together towards eradication of the problem. Its an issue in the life and in football unfortunately, and we need to keep working hard. Its been confirmed that the three warnings to the fans all related to a single incident. Tottenham have launched an investigation. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is a very proud club in relation to these situations. We also deal internally with that. But i think the protocol was followed. This is just the latest allegation of racist abuse to hit the english game. Two weeks ago, a man was arrested at manchester citys game against manchester united, while an fa cup match between haringey and yeovil had to be abandoned. Yesterdays match was also marred by a missile being thrown onto the pitch near chelseas goalkeeper, but it is once again the issue of racism thats put english football under the sternest scrutiny. Andy swiss, bbc news. Janes here now. Talk us through the reaction to yesterdays events . It is all over social media today, isnt it . A seminal moment in the british game. The first time an announcement has been made in the premier league and it is step one of fifas protocol on racism. The announcement was made in the stadium three times and it said racist behaviour among spectators is interfering in the game, please remember in football there is no room for racism. The second and third were reinforcing the first step, it didnt go to the second and third step, the second step is the suspension of the match and players going down the tunnel and if racism still occurs, the match is abandoned. That didnt happen but this protocol has been in place since 2009 and never fully enforced in britain, but in october when england played bulgaria in sofia, there were stadium announcements because there were monkey chance and racist abuse at the england players then. Following on from this incident that Antonio Rudiger experienced, he has tweeted, saying in reaction to the incident, because it was at tottenham stadium, they have said they are conducting an investigation and they have said they will take the strongest possible action against any individualfound to possible action against any individual found to have possible action against any individualfound to have behaved in such a way, conducting racist behaviour, including stadium bans. Taking this incident further, the pfa have called for a government enquiry into racism in football, they have tweeted saying, following events at the tottenham, chelsea game we are disgusted and dismayed once again a premier League Fixture has been tainted by abuse from the stands towards the players. This happened in the premier league but as yet no reaction from the premier league. Isu the pressure will be on them to make a reaction today and be seen them to make a reaction today and be seen to be dealing with the issue because weve seen seen to be dealing with the issue because weve seen several incidents of racism in crowds this season alone, so many are calling for top first a nswers alone, so many are calling for top first answers from the premier league i assume. Tougher sta nces. League i assume. Tougher stances. Jane will have the rest of the sport later and more reaction to that. Well be speaking to iffy onuora from the professional Footballers Association at around 7 10am this morning. They are the body calling for the government enquiry. A small town in australia, home to 400 people, has been almost entirely destroyed by fire. Balmoral in New South Wales has been engulfed by flames, as emergency crews struggle to contain whats been described as catastrophic bushfires. From there Shaimaa Khalil reports. It feels like a deserted war zone, but this is the aftermath of the catastrophic bushfires that have ravaged New South Wales. And in the village of balmoral, the devastation is everywhere. Russell scholes has been a volunteer firefighter for six years. He was out with his team trying to control the blaze in the village when his own house was burned to the ground. So many of the brigade are tired. Thats the mental side of it when youre continually battling something you cant beat. The Prime Minister, scott morrison, appearing for the first time today after fierce criticism of his holiday in hawaii, conceded that more needed to be done to tackle global warming, with scientists saying that drier conditions brought about by Climate Change have worsened the impact of bushfires. The catastrophic fires have subsided but the situation is still extremely dangerous here. The roads remain closed off. Balmoral was one of the worst hit areas by saturdays fires and the community is still very much in shock. Many havent returned to see what happened to their homes and what happened to their village. Just opposite the road from russells shattered house is a very different picture. Craig hurley stayed to defend his home during the fires, using up all the water reserves he had. Flames like a five or six storey building and just roaring all around you. Just scared as hell, you dont know what to do. Australias bracing itself for a scorching summer, and many are wondering where the next big fire is going to hit. Tesco has suspended production of Charity Christmas cards at a factory in china after allegations that it uses prison labour. 6 year old Florence Widdicombe found a plea for help in one of the cards, apparently written by a foreign prisoner in shanghai. The supermarket said it was shocked and has launched an investigation. The duke of edinburgh has spent a third night in hospital, receiving treatment for what royal officials have described as a pre existing condition. Buckingham palace says prince philip, whos 98, was admitted on friday as a precautionary measure. Our correspondent, andy moore, is at the king edward vii hospital in london with the latest for us now. What more can you tell us . I hello, louise. Another night in hospital for the duke. This private hospital around the corner from harley street, the king edward vii hospital. No update from friday, when doctors advised him to come as a precaution and they said he needed to undergo observation and treatment for a pre existing condition. We dont know what it is. The duke was heading from norfolk, sandringham, where he spends a lot of his time, to london and at the same time many members of the royal family were heading to sandringham for the traditional royal christmas. The queen was at Saint Madeleine church on the estate yesterday with the family of king edward, the same church the royal family go to on Christmas Day. Many members of the royalfamily Christmas Day. Many members of the royal family attend that service. We dont know whether the duke will be released from hospital and will be able tojoin released from hospital and will be able to join the rest of the royal family. No public visits yet from any members of his family, no private visits either that we are aware of. Maybe an indication that this is not being treated as a very serious matter and hes expected to go home fairly soon. 0k, thank you very much. Dozens of former thomas cook employees say theyre struggling to access benefits and pay their bills three months after the travel chain collapsed. Some of those affected say theyve received just £50 in 12 weeks. The government has apologised, saying its dedicated staff have helped thousands of people. Simon browning reports. 9,000 jobs disappeared overnight when thomas cook collapsed in september. Disbelief. Pilots and cabin crew, there dreams over. The collapse of thomas cook left a huge legacy. Three months on and dozens of its former employees have spoken to the bbc, because they are unable to get the benefits and support they desperately need to move on. Betty was cabin crew for 12 years. You realise you are just a number. It doesnt matter what you have contributed or done. You are made to feel that it all doesnt matter, these are the rules, that is what they do, and that is the end of it. Scores of people told us they were poorly advised byjob centres because of confusion about their you realise you are just a number, doesnt matter what you have contributed or done. You are made to feel that it all doesnt matter. These are the rules, thats what we do and thats the end of it. Ex employees say they were given conflicting advice as to whether they were entitled to jobseekers alliance or universal credit. Some cases have been closed and some have still not received £50 in 12 weeks. I had to wait five weeks for my first payment, which was fine, but the day before the payment was due they closed my claim and basically told me because ive made too much money, but the money i had was my redundancy money from thomas cook but i havent claim anything so im living off savings now. We were looked after and given a lot of help, but speaking to my colleagues, i know some of them we re my colleagues, i know some of them were treated pretty appallingly. Within the last week, i have speaking to dozens of former thomas cook employees from across the country. While some have managed to find work, others have had a much tougher time and they claim its because the job centre has poorly advised them and many are not willing to speak on camera unless it damages their prospects even further. I spoke to my friends a few days ago and they havent got any otherjob days ago and they havent got any other job because they days ago and they havent got any otherjob because they cant face going to an interview, cant face going to an interview, cant face going out of the house and they are struggling. One of our friends, she ended up with her partner using her redundancy to live in a hotel in a b8b and she was declared homeless. The government has apologised if some people have experienced delays to claims. They have said they urge people to stay in contact with theirjob centres so they can urgently fix their claims. For almost two centuries, thomas cook brought holidaymakers fun and sunshine but its demise continues to cast a shadow over its former staff. Stormy weather has been affecting parts of southwest europe, causing flooding and extreme winds. The crew of a cargo ship, off the coast of sardinia, had to be airlifted to safety after it began to capsize. The vessel hit rough seas and was ploughed into a rocky stretch of coastline. The 12 crew members were rescued and no one was injured. That looks close, doesnt it . Right next to those rocks. Remember Harry Billinge . We all remember harry, dont we . Carols at Blenheim Palace in oxfordshire with another rendition of carols carols. Good morning. Good morning everyone. It is fabulous here. We are here for alice in the palace, that is alice in wonderland and this room is the flamingo room. We have a lot of sparkling flamingos. Now this is the pa rt sparkling flamingos. Now this is the part where alice played croquet. The hedgehog down here is the ball and the flamingos are the mallet. And this is one of the playing cards forming the hoop. Everything is sparkling this morning and quite beautiful as well. We will show you around the palace as we go through the next few hours. Theres been a cold start to the day across parts of scotland. Parts fell to 7 last night and after all the rain recently there is one Flood Warning in wales and 80 in england and there is more rain on the cards over the next few days this christmas week. It will not rain all the time, some of us will have dried weather and many of us will today. Low pressure dominates the weather. Many fronts in the north west reducing showers, some merging as we go through the day and there is another front moving eastwards across england, producing some showers. The showers today in the east will be fairly isolated but more of them in the west and some will be heavier as they emerge, particularly across northern and western scotland. For many it will be a dry bright day with sunny skies. With temperatures falling lower overnight in parts of the highlands we are looking at temperatures reaching only three degrees today but generally speaking we are in the mid high single figures or ii we are in the mid high single figures or 11 degrees as we push the further south. Through the evening and overnight are what the front across the south east will introduce rain pushing eastwards northwards into northern Northern Ireland, Eastern England and behind that simply spells. It will be windy like it is today. Windier than we have seen it is today. Windier than we have seen recently once again that means we will not have such an issue with frost. We start tomorrow with that weather front clearing slowly through the date of the north sea, still some showers left behind. Mostly still some showers left behind. M ostly o n still some showers left behind. Mostly on the north and the west but we could see the odd one elsewhere. In between some dry and bright weather with sunshine and temperature again getting up just into double figures. For Christmas Day, we look at a largely dry day with sunshine and a ridge of High Pressure but high cloud coming in from the west will turn sunshine hazy. Temperatures again just slightly above average. If you are travelling later on Christmas Day, it is worth mentioning that we do expect some dense fog so stay tuned to the Weather Forecast. It is absolutely beautiful here and i cannot wait to show you more. Absolutely beautiful here and i cannot wait to show you morem absolutely beautiful here and i cannot wait to show you more. It is fantastic. I am looking at that tree andi fantastic. I am looking at that tree and i am envious. It is so gorgeous. How do you get that many decorations on it . I will check it out later, see if any of them come off. We will see if any of them come off. We will see you shortly. Thank you. If you wa nt see you shortly. Thank you. If you want colour and drama, i can give you some. Look at this. Its the moment a group of youtubers pull off whats thought to be the worlds biggest elephants toothpaste explosion. You can perhaps see how the experiment got its name we will find out in a moment how the home is made. The foam is made. The video has gone viral online, with millions of views. Lets talk to the man responsible nick uhasjoins us now from dallas in texas. Have you tidied things up . It is quite messy. You said it, the way this reaction works is that you mix a catalyst with Hydrogen Peroxide and that releases oxygen gas and there is soap in the mixture and that creates foam. That foam propagates outwards, as you can see, as quickly as the catalyst releases oxygen so as quickly as the catalyst releases oxygen so you just get a ton of foam really fast. The question is how do you clean it . as you can see, it was as big as davids house. It towered over this house. The best pa rt towered over this house. The best part about the reaction is that it is actually self cleaning in the sense that what happens is that the bubbles eventually pop and they get smaller and smaller and it degrades all the way back down to soapy water. So you are left with nothing more than soapy water that you mop up, recycle the plastic and you are done. What were trying to do . You we re done. What were trying to do . You were trying to have the biggest elephant toothpaste ever. Have you done it . I think so. We were attempting to break the record which was about 5k cubic metres. We had tried it once before with a different colour, red phone, and we got 76 cubic metres that it is hard to tell because we did not have a drone shot and it was difficult to see. So we thought if we would do it again we were going to go to the absolute extreme, the craziest limits. We got to about 200 cubic metres on this one. Is that it . Do you draw a line and move on now . Ahem. You are going to do it again arent you . We are calling it the foa m arent you . We are calling it the foam walls 2020. Foam war 2020. If you want to go bigger, lets do for it. It is extraordinary. You are trying to make science fun and watching this it does look great fun. Dont necessarily try this one at home . There is an athome version you can do with much less Hydrogen Peroxide. You can see that one of the guys i work with, this name is science bob, and there are links and articles you can find out how to do an at home version. One that we did, the hydrogen is 35 . That is what they a cleaning agent. There is an at home version. They a cleaning agent. There is an athome version. So you tidied up. Are you looking for a bigger garden now to do the next one . One of the comments we got the most was why did we decide to do it in the house, outside davids house . There is not a lot of real estate in los angeles. So we did it in the biggest yard that we could find and that would have been davids. It does look like such fun and you are clearly enjoying it. I am living the dream, in my sense, because i studied biology and school and i also studied film and i kind of combine the two. Working in the sciences and doing this type of video production, i live for it. And make science looks so much fun. I do appreciate that you did not use your own house. There is one drawback to the foam and that is that there is iodide in the solution so you use potassium iodide to create the catalyst and it stains objects yellow. So u nfortu nately stains objects yellow. So unfortunately davids house is actually stained yellow on the outside. I did see you did least cover the lawn. Thank you so much. I am sure it is the middle of the night where you are. Do not try that, exactly, like he says. Maybe carol could triad at Blenheim Palace. Or maybe that would not go down well. Have you got some christmas food shopping left to do . Expect big queues at the checkouts today seans at a supermarket in birmingham to tell us more. Good morning. It is a busy day already. People have already come m, already. People have already come in, on cue at six, getting the vegeta bles in, on cue at six, getting the vegetables early because it is the busiest food shopping day of the year. They think 13 million of us will be heading to the supermarkets and our local greengrocers to get our groceries today, spending 800 million quid. You will see a few offers when it comes to vegetable because they want us in store to get the last minute span from us. It is a big day and important for many workers here as well. We are speaking to shoppers this morning about what is changing. Less food is on the menu, less meat as well. How do supermarkets stop the shelves then . I will catch up with shoppers as well and see how it is changing and what they have in their basket. But before that, unused travel and whether from wherever you are. Good morning from bbc london, im geeta pendse. Pollution from roads is causing lasting damage to londons waterways, according to new research. It happens when oil and fuel from vehicles is washed into rivers when it rains posing a threat to wildlife. The study is thought to be the first of its kind and aims to help authorities target the worst offending roads. 30 illegal pedicabs were seized by the police in Central London over the weekend. The vehicles were fitted with adapted motors to make them go faster, but were unlicensed. The pedicabs were seized as part of a Police Operation to deter anti social behaviour. In areas including Oxford Street and covent garden. Thousands of firefighters are expected to line the streets later for londons fire chief on her last day at work. The show of support for dany cotton has been organised by former and retired members of the fire brigade. She announced earlier this month that she would step down from her role earlier than planned. It followed criticism over the Services Response to the Grenfell Tower fire. Air travellers are being warned that flights from Southend Airport could be disrupted over the festive period as some staff go on strike. Baggage handlers and security workers will walk out for three days from Christmas Eve after talks broke down. The airport says it has a plan in place to ensure it doesnt have an impact on passengers. Lets have a look at the rest of the travel. Theres a good service on the tube this morning. On South Western Railway, there are no trains from epsom to ewell west because of a landslip. Theres also a reduced service on the rest of the network because of ongoing industrial action. On the camera and in hoxton, city road is closed northbound from the old street roundabout because of a gas leak. In greenwich, king william walk is partly blocked because of a burst water main. In highgate, a contraflow is in place on the archway road near highgate tube station due to thames water works. Now the weather with sara thornton. Good morning to you and a much quieter spell of weather for the next few days, right through to the end of Christmas Day. Boxing day will change, there will be some rain around then. Not completely dry, there is rain tonight, but for most of today, a lively day, dry with spells of sunshine and a top temperature of ii celsius, 52 fahrenheit. Through the evening we will see a thickening of cloud as we head towards midnight bringing us rain overnight from the south west, clearing off quickly towards the north east, keeping temperatures up overnight at six or seven degrees. If you are up early in the north east tomorrow morning you may see a bit of rain and then through the day there will be a few passing showers, rattling through quickly there and some sunshine. It should be dry for Christmas Day as well. A quiet and sunny day for you then but on boxing day we will see a spell of wet and breezy weather. The duke of edinburgh has spent a third night in hospital, receiving treatment for what royal officials have described as a pre existing condition. Buckingham palace says prince philip, whos 98, was admitted on friday as a precautionary measure on the advice of his doctor. Lets get more on our top story with jane. Once top story with jane. Again we are talking about football once again we are talking about football for the wrong reasons . Yes, allegations of racism, as you mentioned earlier. The first time a stadium announcement has been made, the first step on fifas protocol on racism. Alleged racism that Chelsea PlayerAntonio Rudiger said took place at tottenhams White Hart Lane yesterday. It started when tottenhams son heung min was sent off for kicking Antonio Rudiger in his chest. Rudiger was then seen mimicking a monkey gesture and told his captain, cezar azpilicueta, that he heard monkey noises towards him from the crowd. That was reported that to the referee Anthony Taylor, who called for the stadium announcement to be made. Rudigers manager, frank lampard, has said hell do everything he can to support his defender. All i know is that toni rudiger has said that he had some racist chanting. Or comments. I havent had an individual conversation with toni, just the lads as a group, but i will support toni, as we would support our players, any opposition players, whether it is our stadium, opposition players, however it happens. We will wait for the process to happen. Well, shortly after the match, rudiger took to social media and made reference to the alleged chants. He put up this post on instagram, saying meanwhile, speaking on 5live, former tottenham midfielderjermainejenas said Manchester Uniteds six game unbeaten run in the premier league is over after a moment to forget for their goalkeeper david de gea. He gifted watford the lead after letting ismaila sarrs shot slip through his hands, not something hell want to watch again. Not in slow motion, anyway a penalty from troy deeney moments later secured watfords first home win of the season. They stay bottom, six points from safety. They deserved it more than us. They took the chances. Fair play to them, good luck, and we didnt take our chances. We were too slow. Youve got to earn every little inch, every little point, in this league matter who you play against. Liverpool have arrived back in england with another trophy to add to their cabinet. The clubs captainJordan Henderson proudly held the club world cup, a trophy they won after beating brazillian side flamengo in the final on saturday evening. Michael van gerwen is a step closer to successfully defending his title at the world darts championship. Hes through to the fourth round after beating englands ricky evans 4 0 at alexandra palace. They won 38 10, Anthony Watson making his comeback from injury, scoring one of their six tries. The win moves bath up to seventh, london irish drop to ninth. And finally, the weathers not been great here for sporting events, but spare a thought for the riders in the cyclo cross world cup in belgium. Louise, i know youll like doing a triathlon and you like running in bad weather. In the mud. In the mud, yeah. Its rained so much that the course isjust like a tough mudder the conditions caused chaos for the riders, almost impossible to get up to any speed. Obviously we have picked out plenty of spills for you. Several did manage to complete the course, the winners, triumphantly crossing the line covered in mud definitely need a good, hot bath after that. And a lot of Washing Powder yes, i pity those people i we nt powder yes, i pity those people i went running in the mud yesterday and fell over, did a full somersault. If its and fell over, did a full somersault. If its not and fell over, did a full somersault. If its not raining, you arent training you are right i tell you one place where they would desperately want some rain right now, australia, where we have seen more right now, australia, where we have seen more pictures over the weekend of terrible fires that have affected so of terrible fires that have affected so many people. A small town in australia home to 400 people has been almost entirely destroyed by fire. Balmoral in New South Wales has been engulfed by flames, as emergency crews struggle to contain whats been described as catastrophic bushfires. Steve harrison from balmoral explained how lucky he was to escape. When it came, it came in, like, 3 4 minutes. A big bloom of black smoke and embers fell out. I ran around the building and turned the pumps on, weve got sprinklers on the roofs and the walls. That took me five minutes i suppose and by the timei five minutes i suppose and by the time i got back to this shed here, got it wet, i ran to my ute and the garden was on fire and the drive was on fire and the roof was on fire so i realised i couldnt evacuate. The day before i built myself a small kiln down the back and. A coffin sized kiln just kiln down the back and. A coffin sized kilnjust big enough for me to crawl inside. I hid in therefore half an hour while the fire went over. That was my plan b. I planned to leave, but didnt get to. It came to leave, but didnt get to. It came to quick. That plan b worked and protected steve, but what a story and what an experience for all the people that live there. And stevejoins us on the phone now. Good morning, steve, thanks for talking to us. How are you now . Hello, jon. Im alive and grateful for that but im a bit misty up. Yeah, its been a couple of days now and im a bit shaky and emotional but im alive and im glad im ok. Yorketown, steve, balmoral, has received a lot of attention in the ukfor received a lot of attention in the uk for being one of the worst affected places your town. Can you describe how your hometown has been hit by this . Well, its. I lost i think six of my eight neighbours have lost their houses around me in this little corner. Its just like a blackened around me in this little corner. Itsjust like a blackened moonscape with lax sticks. Theres nothing green. Its pretty shocking lax sticks. There is no where you can prepare for anything like this black sticks. You just have to live through it and do the best you can. Seems theres nowhere you could prepare for it but i was struck by the fact you did try to protect your property didnt you . You were wrapping it in tinfoil and aluminium foil before the flames got closer . The day before, my wife evacuated the day before because we knew it was possibly going to be very bad, so was possibly going to be very bad, so she helped me wrap the place up in alfoil. It took a long time. It took ages. We got it all wrapped up in silverfoil. It took ages. We got it all wrapped up in silver foil. It was reflective away with the heat and with the sprinklers going we managed to save it with all the buildings going down. This remarkable story about. You described it as being like a coffin, a kiln, that you managed to hide in. Can you talk us through the process of you doing that . That sounds absolutely terrifying, knowing that the flames are getting closer and the smoke is surrounding you. What was it like being in there waiting for it to pass . |j you. I grabbed my bag out of the truck, it was too late to go, i had my laptop and hard drive and climbed into the space and watched. The garden was on fire as i crawled in. The sky. The air was luminous with orange and red blooms of flame, black smoke. Very hard to breathe and very, very hot. But i was close to the ground and i was inside an insulated box. It wasnt sealed, it was open at the end. I had to already put a bottle of water and a bucket and a fire blanket and and a bucket and a fire blanket and an extinguisher in their in preparationjust in an extinguisher in their in preparation just in case. Unlucky. Im glad i did that preparation, it saved my life im lucky. It was absolutely terrifying, no two ways about it. How long were you in there, steve . Maybe halfanhour, maybe a touch less. Im not sure, i lost track. Long enough for the main fire front to pass over me and i was able to get out and start the hoses and start hosing things down using the hoses that we water the garden, the hoses that we water the garden, the yard, with. Everything was on fire. We are seeing pictures now, steve, of the kiln you hid inside and the bucket of water you put there to try to protect yourself. What was going through your mind . What was going through your mind . What are you thinking for that half an hour trapped in there knowing you are surrounded by fire . Ijust thought, knowing you are surrounded by fire . I just thought, i knowing you are surrounded by fire . Ijust thought, i hope i dont die topic not much, pretty blank. Its terrifying. I dont recall. I dont remember anything specific other than to keep myself protected and stay calm, yeah, stay calm, keep damp and sit it out and hopefully it works. Steve, well done for having the foresight to do that and the strength of character to then go through with it. We are glad to hear youre ok and is your wife now back home . Is she able to come back to the property . Yes, she was allowed in yesterday. They opened the road briefly but they have since closed it. And thisjust before christmas, youre not going to have much of a christmas, are you . We had arranged that we would go to our neighbours house. Three of our neighbours would get together at one of the houses and have Christmas Day together but all three have lost their houses, so looks like they will come here maybe. We will see. We are the only ones with a house left. Astonishing to hear neighbourliness and community at christmas time still exists even the circumstances. There are over 200 pieces of crockery sourced from all over the place. And this deck of cards, painted off side, brought here and assembled. It is magnificent. So much detail in this table. Outside isa much detail in this table. Outside is a cold start to the day if you are in the north of scotland where temperatures fell to 7. And we still have an Environment Agency warning for floods across wales and 80 across england. In the next few days there are small rain in the forecast but not all the time. Today we have driving our weather with the front in the north west. That will really produce some heavy showers and we also have a front moving across the uk, across england in particular, introducing some showers drifting east through the day. Showers in the east will be few and far bahamian between the more frequent elsewhere. In between some bright conditions and perhaps our old friend the son. Windier than it was yesterday with temperatures between seven and ii but when temperatures fall so low overnight, in the highlands you may only reach three degrees. Yesterday it early broke freezing. As we had through the evening and overnight, a new front from the south west will introduce them rain, pushing northwards and eastwards into Northern England and ireland through the midlands in the south east through the night, followed by showers. Still windy and in the north of the country it will be a and clear skies with temperatures dropping closer to freezer. Freezing. We start tomorrow with all the rain in the south east, moving into the north sea over the course of the day leaving us with showers. Heaviest showers are likely to be in wales in South West England but you could see showers develop in scotla nd could see showers develop in scotland and Northern Ireland as well. For Christmas Day itself, we have a ridge of High Pressure across us so we have a ridge of High Pressure across us so we do not expect any snow. We do expect some sunshine. Later in the day we will see high cloud coming from the west and that will make the sunshine a little hazy but for some, the temperature will be above average for this time of year and if you are travelling later on in Christmas Day, perhaps into the evening, we also expect some dense fog. Do stay tuned to the Weather Forecast. I have another treat in store for you because this morning we arejoined by store for you because this morning we are joined by the oxford gospel event choir singing joy to the world. Everybody singing joy to the world let us receive our king let every heart prepare him room let heaven and nature sing let heaven and nature sing let this shout the story that the saviour is born let heaven and nature sing joy to the world joy to the World Everybody singing joy to the world. That was brilliant. Thank you, carol. We will be back with you later. Let me bring you straight back down to earth. Time to go shopping. Time to get the last minute essentials and not so essentials from the food shop. Last minute essentials and not so essentials from the food shopm you have not done it, you are not alone. 13 million of it are expected to hit the supermarket today. At least not all in the one shop. Seans in birmingham to tell us more. And i thought i was early. As we we re and i thought i was early. As we were coming in there were people outside asking me if we can go in yet. They have done their shopping already, getting their onions, getting their greengrocery is that they need. We are spending £800 million on groceries today and if you compare it to the average monday, it is three times busier than an average monday. If you head into the shops this morning thinking that it into the shops this morning thinking thatitis into the shops this morning thinking that it is a nice mundy morning and people will be at work, it will be busier than ordinary. It means we spend more money and there is more stuff for the supermarkets to be a bit more competitive about to try and get our spend. Thank you for watching this. You work for springboard and you look at the number of people heading into our shops ride around the country all year round. How does it feel this time around . Black friday quarters by surprise a little bit. Many more of us hit the shops then. We did. Were looking forward to the volume of activity in our bricks and mortars destination, that by 3. 4 on the friday from last year, from friday last year. That was a surprise. Of course, what we anticipate on what has happened is that things have gone into a level since then. People have been waiting and people know there are many discounts available so they are going right up to the last minute to shop, that includes food. We anticipated that Super Saturday would be a busy saturday and it was busy but it was 7 down on last year. So people clearly are being a little more cautious and waiting to the finest moment. Is there a chance that it could just be that much down all the way in the run up to christmas and not have an uplift in the next few days . That is possible. That is a real possibility. Shoppers are so that is a real possibility. Shoppers are so alert and aware of discounts now that they are waiting right until the last minute. It discounts are almost continuous they have them for boxing day on the 27th so why shop was too much food is slightly different. We will buy food. Were talking about being more experienced lead, that all builds up to the christmas lunch so will be busy today. Lets talk to one of the bosses here. A little wander down here because there are many trends that these supermarket bosses need to get used to. Less meat on the menu and less use, unbelievably. I know some people may not believe that. Gail is here, she is a director of morrisons. You are in charge of own brand stuff. So a particularly competitive area now. Before we start that, how has it been so far across the country . M this christmas any different . It is slightly different this year in that we are seeing slightly different this year in that we are seeing more slightly different this year in that we are seeing more people buying vegan and vegetarian type products. Although christmas will still be traditional we are seeing customers moving into slightly different arenas for their moving into slightly different arenas fortheir main moving into slightly different arenas for their main meals as well and far more free farm. We have turkeys behind us and fishmongers behind us. Turkey seems competitively priced across the supermarkets this year. Is there a reason this is happening this year . This year we have tried to focus on those items that matter most to customers at christmas, customer favourite basket items. Lower the of turkey this year and we are to send a lot more and many customers will tuck into those festive feasts. Maybe some meat free in there as well. And on booze, are we really buying less booze than we were before or are we going a few percentage lower . How does it work . Customer shop differently so there is more premium alcohol being sold and a lot of press echo, a lot of Premium Press echo. There is a revival of port and sherry. Premium prosecco. Also no alcohol is on the scene this year. We will talk to you a bit more about this later in the morning. Port and sherry, thatis in the morning. Port and sherry, that is a new trend this year. Have you noticed that on the dinner table this year . Maybe someone else has got onto that trend that apparently people are doing. Sherry is back can you get a box of dates for us . We forgot to get some. I will start a list. We will see you later. And mince pies get a lot of mince pies as well. Five minutes to seven on monday morning just before Christmas Sean is out on millions of others doing the same. On South Western Railway there are no trains from epsom to ewell west because of a landslip. Theres also a reduced service on the rest of the network because of ongoing industrial action. On the camera and in hoxton city road is closed northbound from the old street roundabout because of a gas leak. In greenwich, king william walk is partly blocked because of a burst water main. In highgate a contraflow is in place on the archway road near highgate tube station due to to thames water works. Now the weather with sara thornton. Good morning to you and a much quieter spell of weather for the next few days, right through to the end of Christmas Day. Boxing day will change, there will be some rain around then. Not completely dry, there is rain tonight, but for most of today, a lively day, dry with good spells of sunshine and a top temperature of ii celsius, 52 fahrenheit. Through the evening we will see a thickening of cloud as we head towards midnight, bringing us rain overnight from the south west, clearing off quickly towards the north east, keeping temperatures up overnight at six or seven degrees. Im back with the latest from the bbc london newsroom in half an hour. Plenty more on our website at the usual address. Now though its back to louise and jon. Bye for now. Good morning, welcome to breakfast withjon kay and louise minchin. Our headlines today racism in football. Calls for a government inquiry after a premier league match is stopped for the first time because of allegations of abuse from the stands. Chelseas Antonio Rudiger, who made the complaint, says he hopes the offenders will be found and punished, while tottenham have vowed to take the strongest possible action. Stories of survival from the australian bushfires. Well hear from the residents of one community thats been devastated by the flames. Its apparently the busiest day for food shopping of the year, with an estimated 13 million of you buying supplies for Christmas Day. Less meat and more dates on the menu as we all try to do our Christmas Shopping on the busiest shopping day of the year. I will speak to shoppers in birmingham about what they are putting in their baskets. Good morning from Blenheim Palace and you are listening to the oxford gospel event choir. For many, dry, some showers, heaviest in the north and west. We will be back with more later. Announcer racist behaviour amongst spectators is interfering with the game. Please remember that in football, there is no place for racism. At the end of the match, the chelsea skipper explained what happened. But i think the protocol was followed. We also deal internally with that, but i think the protocol was followed. This is just the latest allegation of racist abuse to hit the english game. Two weeks ago, a man was arrested after manchester citys game against manchester united, while an fa cup match between haringey and yeovil had to be abandoned. Yesterdays match was also marred by a missile being thrown onto the pitch near chelseas goalkeeper, but it is once again the issue of racism thats put english football under the sternest scrutiny. Andy swiss, bbc news. Janes here now to talk us through the reaction to yesterdays events. Theres been a lot of reaction to this, hasnt there . Understandably so, this is a seminal moment in the domestic game in britain with the first time an announcement like this has been made in the premier league, and it is one of fifas protocol on racism. The announcement was made three times at tottenham stadium, saying , three times at tottenham stadium, saying, racist behaviour three times at tottenham stadium, saying , racist behaviour among spectators is interfering with the game and please remember, in football there is no place for racism. It was made three times but the second and third announcements we re the second and third announcements were to reiterate step one, it wasnt going to step two and step three, they are the match is suspended and then if it carries on, the match is abandoned. The protocol has been in place since 2009 and it hasnt been enforced in britain and this is the first ever announcement. You might remember in october when england played bulgaria at sophia sophia, an announcement was made there, so it has happened in the international arena, aimed at the english black players. After the chelsea against tottenham match, Antonio Rudiger tweeted, saying totte n ha m tottenham themselves say they are conducting an investigation and they say they will take the strongest possible action against any individualfound to possible action against any individual found to have possible action against any individualfound to have been behaving in a racist manner, including stadium bans, but the pfa are looking for something further than this, their players football association, saying they want a government enquiry into racism in football and they have waited, following the events in the totte n ha m following the events in the tottenham against chelsea game, we are disgusted and dismayed once againa are disgusted and dismayed once again a premier League Fixture has been tainted by abuse from the stands against players. This isnt the first time this season it has taken place and that is in the premier league, and we saw in the andy swiss report earlier, but the premier league hasnt reacted and i assume pressure will be on them to ta ke assume pressure will be on them to take action to be seen to be dealing with the issue, because theres been several incidents this season with racism in the crowds and many are calling for a tougher stance from the premier league. Jane, you will be talking about it through the programme, thank you very much. Well be speaking to iffy onuora from the professional Footballers Association in the next few minutes. To some of this mornings other news a small town in australia home to 400 people, has been almost entirely destroyed by fire. Balmoral in New South Wales has been engulfed by flames, as emergency crews struggle to contain whats been described as catastrophic bushfires. Steve harrison from balmoral explained how lucky he was to escape. When it came, it came in, like, 3 4 minutes. A big plume of black smoke and embers fell out. Iran around all the buildings and turned the pumps on, weve got sprinklers on the roofs and the walls. That took me five minutes i suppose, and by the time i got back to this shed here, got it wet, i ran to my ute but the garden was on fire and the drive was on fire and the road was on fire so i realised i couldnt evacuate. The day before i built myself a small kiln down the back and. A coffin sized kilnjust big enough for me to crawl inside. I hid in there for half an hour while the firestorm went over. That was my plan b. I planned to leave, but didnt get to. It came to quick. Astonishing story of an escape and bravery. Earlier we managed to catch up bravery. Earlier we managed to catch up with steve for the latest on the phone and he told us more about the devastating impact the fire has had on his entire hometown. I had intended to leave the day before i thought, i should have a plan b. Im a potterand i build kilns for others as part of my potter business, i had the stuff around so i quickly constructed this long, narrow kiln and i was able to crawl in it when the fire came. I grabbed my bag out of the truck, it was too late to go, i had my laptop and hard drive and climbed into the space and watched. The garden was on fire as i crawled in. The sky was. Not the sky, the air was luminous orange, red plumes of flame, black smoke. Very hard to breathe and very, very hot. But i was close to the ground and i was inside an insulated box. It wasnt sealed, it was open at the end. I had to already put a bottle of water and a bucket and a fire blanket and an extinguisher in their in preparation just in case. There. Im lucky. Im glad i did that preparation, it saved my life. It was absolutely terrifying, no two ways about it. We spoke to him earlier and now he is taking all of his neighbours to christmas because he is the only one that has one left. He wrapped his house in foil to keep the flames away but an incredible story. Disbelief. Pilots and cabin crew, their dreams over. The collapse of thomas cook has left a devastating legacy than three months on, many still cant comprehend. Being a stewardess for thomas cook defined me, and thats gone now. That feeling of loss, you know, wheres my career gone . I couldnt even get dressed. I couldnt face the world. Now, as christmas approaches, scores of former staff like betty and ian, whove waited months for benefits, say theyve been badly let down. You realise youre just a number. It doesnt matter what you have contributed or done. You are made to feel that it all doesnt matter, these are the rules, thats what they do and that is the end of it. Ex employees say they were given conflicting advice as to whether they were entitled to jobseekers alliance or universal credit. Some cases have been closed and some have still not received £50 in 12 weeks. I had to wait five weeks for my first payment to come through, which was fine, but the day before the payment was due they closed my claim and basically told me because ive made too much money, but the money i had was my redundancy money from thomas cook but i havent claim anything so im living off savings now. The job centre there. Ian, a pilot for four decades, admits hes had a better time at hisjob centre in chorley. We were looked after and given a lot of help, but speaking to my colleagues, i know some of them were treated pretty appallingly. Within the last week, i have spoken to dozens of former thomas cook employees from across the country. While some have managed to find work, others have had a much tougher time and they claim its because thejob centre has poorly advised them and many are not willing to speak on camera in case it damages their prospects even further. I spoke to my friends a few days ago and they havent got any otherjob yet because they cant face going to an interview, cant face going out of the house and theyre still really struggling. One of our friends, she ended up with her partner using her redundancy to live in a hotel, in a b8b, and she was declared homeless. The government has apologised if some people have experienced delays to claims. They told us their dedicated staff have helped thousands and they urge people to stay in contact with theirjob centres so they can urgently fix their claims. For almost two centuries, thomas cook brought holidaymakers sunshine and fun but its demise continues to cast a shadow over its former staff. Simon browning, bbc news. If you think your house is looking a mess this morning or may your garden could do with a tidy up, its not as bad as you might think. Look at this that is the moment a group of youtubers pull off what is thought to be the biggest elephant toothpaste explosion. You can see how the experiment got its name. They mixed Hydrogen Peroxide, soap and food dye. The video has gone viral online. Millions of views. I have watched it. Most of the views we re have watched it. Most of the views were you we spoke to them earlier and they were trying to beat all records elephant toothpaste and i think they have. They also say do not try that at home. They say it reduces to water so itjust washes away. Looks a bit messy to me the racist chanting at last nights match between tottenham and chelsea is the latest in a string of high profile incidents. Now the Union Representing players wants a full government inquiry into racism in football. Iffy onoura is from the professional Footballers Association and joins us now. Good morning. Thanks for coming in. Here we are again talking about this. When you saw these pictures and heard these reports yesterday afternoon, what did you think . Just that sense of deja vu. It was only a couple of weeks ago at the Manchester Derby and we spoke in similar terms about what we need to do and here we are again like you say. My feeling is we are in danger of accepting this is the norm. Each incident further entrenches this and it almost is like they become co pycats. It almost is like they become copycats. We need to think differently. Theres this protocol in place, isnt there . Lets talk about that a little bit. Theres three announcements, thats the first part of the protocol, theres three announcements made. Is that working or not helping . From what i can gather they made three announcements on the same incident, so announcements on the same incident, so in some respects that is fine. The second and third reiterated the first. Everyone is comfortable with that protocol. Im not saying its the panacea because we will get to the panacea because we will get to the point, if we are not careful, the point, if we are not careful, the clubs will take it on themselves and the players did well, reporting it to the captain, Antonio Rudiger, and then they went through the fourth official and the assistance. We will get to the stage if we are not careful of players walking off. You want a full, formal enquiry to look at racism in football and may be better, other ways of dealing with this . Explain, what do you want that enquiry to achieve and why . First of all, football is a reflection of society, so were not saying its isolated in football. Football is the national game, thats why we are here, we love talking about it and football can be a vehicle to look beyond football because what happens in football is a manifestation of society so we can start addressing the core issues and what is driving it. That is the starting point, otherwise we will keep coming back to this same old thing where an incident happens and we wring our hands and we move onto the next thing, and meanwhile the players at the front line keep getting the abuse abuse. The players on the picture cool calm and collected as well as off the pitch. They come out and talk about it. They have been supportive and ex players, the pfa are made of ex players, the pfa are made of ex players, we have been in that space. But in this area of social pressure, to support it is a great thing. But how do we support them . Who supports them and how do we do it . I go back to what we said in the beginning, there is danger injust carrying on doing what we always do. This is about how we see ourselves asa this is about how we see ourselves as a country, you know . We used to be famous for tolerance and all those things. Many of us spoke about control and the values of the country, inclusiveness and, positivity, things like that that we are in danger of losing. And a decent amount of people, they should be worried of that. So the politics of the moment are inflaming this. Last time i was here we spoke about 2012, the message was sent out with the olympics. That inclusiveness and tolerance. But that now seems a relic. It was only eight years ago. Fast forward to where we are now and it seems so long ago i think most people in this country still want the message that we sent out then, not what we are sending out now. All it needs people in power and leadership to take control of this and to provide leadership and support for players. Have you had any response to your call for an enquiry . Not yet. Everything only happened last night and it is quite early. Many discussions we had internally, but we needed as a starting point. We have a new government now and there is an opportunity for them to take the lead. Much as been spoken about the language and culture of politics, this is an opportunity now to reset reset the tone in a positive way. Many people are up early this morning, thinking about the last minute plans for christmas. Weve been shopping with sean this morning. And carol has a lovely gig this morning at Blenheim Palace for the weather. It looks stunning there, carol. And it is. Good morning everyone. This is the birthplace of winston churchill. And if we look around, this is in the room with the cheshire cat. There he is a there and he is looking quite mischievous with that big grin. Often in alice in wonderland he baffles everyone because he made his head appear without his body. Just seeing that big cheesy grin. A lovely room with many different colours. With seeing Pink Christmas trees, this one is in gold and bronze. Mr toad has an invitation to play croquet with her majesty the queen. As we come through here into the queen of hearts room, let me tell you that Lewis Carroll, of course, wrote alice in wonderland. He lived just down the road in oxford, he was a professor at the university of oxford and he wrote the book for the daughter of the dean. Her name was alice. You can see here the queen is spinning around. She made the tarts ona spinning around. She made the tarts on a sunday day and the nave came to ta ke on a sunday day and the nave came to take them away. She was handy with her off with the head catchphrase. One of the things that may have made you lose your head is if there were white roses. She did not like white so white roses. She did not like white so all roses were painted red. It is a chilly start to the day for some of us. Also after all the rain that we had there is still Flood Warnings from there is still Flood Warnings from the Environment Agency in force across england, one in wales. None in scotland. So we have low pressure driving our weather today. The weather front in the north west enhancing the showers and here they will be heavy through the day. Another weather front moving from the west to east across england and wales, taking showers with it as it does so full showers in the east today will be few and far between but the showers in the north and west will be prolific, some of the merging to give longer spells of rain. But for most of us today it will be a dry day, a bright day with some sunshine. Temperatures generally in the range between seven and 11 degrees stop locally not so cold overnight, a top temperature of three in the highlands. For some yesterday the temperature did not even break freezing. Yesterday the temperature did not even breakfreezing. Through yesterday the temperature did not even break freezing. Through the evening and overnight a weather front coming in from the south west will introduce rain as a career is north eastward is bringing across Northern Ireland, Northern England, england and into the south east. Behind it some showers and ahead of ed another cold night, notjust quite as cold as the nightjust gone. On Christmas Eve we start off with the rain across Northern Ireland, Northern England in the north midlands and the south east. Weakening through the days at south pull away towards the north sea. Hide it some showers, the heaviest of which is in wales and South West England. You can see a few showers and other western points of the uk as well. Some brightness as well. If you are up early in the north east tomorrow morning you may see a bit of rain and then through the day there will be a few passing showers, rattling through quickly though and some sunshine the other side. It should be dry for Christmas Day as well. A quiet and sunny day for you then but on boxing day we will see a spell of wet and breezy weather. Im back with the latest from the bbc london newsroom in half an hour. Plenty more on our website at the usual address. Now though its back to louise and jon. Bye for now. tx sting hello, this is breakfast withjon kay and louise minchin. Heres a summary of this mornings main stories from bbc news tottenham have vowed to take the strongest possible action after claims some fans directed racist abuse at players during yesterdays game against chelsea. Antonio rudiger complained of racist chanting during the match. The professional Footballers Association said it was disgusted by the reports and is calling for an urgent government inquiry into racism in football. But weve got to use this as a starting point. You know, its a new government government now and its an opportunity for those to take the lead. A lot has been spoken about the languor and culture of politics, this is an opportunity now to really set the tone in a positive way. A small town in australia home to 400 people has been almost entirely destroyed by fire. Balmoral in New South Wales has been engulfed by flames, as emergency crews struggle to contain whats been described as catastrophic bushfires. Fires are burning across several states amid dry and hot conditions. Tesco has suspended production of Charity Christmas cards at a factory in china, after allegations that it uses prison labour. Six year old Florence Widdicombe found a plea for help in one of the cards, apparently written by a foreign prisoner in shanghai. The supermarket said it was shocked and has launched an investigation. Proceeds from the cards usually raise around £30,000 a year for tescos chosen charities. Joining us now from our london newsroom is gerald oppenheim, chief executive of the fundraising regulator. Thank you and good to see you. This is very concerning, what do you make of it . It is concerning and it will be very concerning to the charities getting income from the sales of these cards, because they wouldnt expect there would be forced labour producing them. So first of all, what do the charities do . First of all they have to have a look at whats going on . Yes, im sure they will be doing that already and well be working with them to find out what happened and to see what lessons what happened and to see what lesso ns ca n what happened and to see what lessons can be learned to make sure this kind of thing doesnt happen again as faras this kind of thing doesnt happen again as far as anybody can control it. Presumably lots of people will specifically buy cards where the money is going to go to charity as well. How big an impact could this have . I think thats very hard to measure because were probably through the card buying season this year, but i think as a rule of thumb, if you want to buy Charity Christmas cards you can do that in a variety of ways. You can buy them direct from charities or you can go to one of the pop up shops like card aid that appeared at this time of year to sell cards. I think the impact will be a bit laid. Do you think it is feasible and all charities should be looking at where there cards are made and who they are made by yes, i think they will be doing that and there are arrangements in place to make sure charities, in the contracts they have with third party suppliers, make it clear that it has to be ethical. What are you doing . We will look at the three charities in the sunday times piece yesterday to ask them about the arrangements they have, and we will take it from there. Looking at thejoint there. Looking at the joint statement from the charities, the british heart foundation, cancer uk and diabetes uk and they said like tesco we are shocked, we have been in touch and they assure us the cards have been removed from sale and the factories producing them are suspended pending investigation. We await the outcome of theirfull investigation. We await the outcome of their full investigation. What kind of things should they be looking at . Tesco will want to satisfy themselves that they were told the truth by the suppliers that there was no false labour involved. Clearly something has gone very wrong. Tesco, like all retailers producing goods overseas, will do inspections of the places where these things are made and they will wa nt to these things are made and they will want to check up on all of that and the charities will want to know the outcome, as we well. I appreciate your time, gerald oppenheim, thank you very much. Tesco say they have suspended the factory where the cards are produced and they have launched an investigation as well as withdrawing them from sale, and they are bored them from sale, and they are bored the use of prison labour and they would never allow it in their supply chain would never allow it in their supply chain they abhore. That statement from tesco. Jane is here with the sport. Lets get more on our top story with jane. Calls for an enquiry into racism in football. The incident overshadowed the match last night tween tottenham and chelsea. Chelsea player Antonio Rudiger has alleged that he was subjected to racist chanting at tottenhams stadium yesterday. The pfa say they want a government inquiry and the sports minister, nigel adams has called it depressing and said on social media that he will speak with tottenhams directors today. The alleged abuse started when tottenhams son heung min was sent off for kicking Antonio Rudiger in his chest. Rudiger was then seen mimicking a monkey gesture, telling his captain that some members of the crowd had made monkey chants towards him. Referee Anthony Taylor then called for a stadium announcement to be made. Rudigers manager, frank lampard, has said hell do everything he can to support his defender. All i know is that toni rudiger has said that he heard some racist chanting, or comments. I havent had an individual conversation with toni, ive only addressed the group and a couple of lads who are in doping. Of course, ill support toni, as we would support any of our players, in fact any opposition players, whenever this happens, whatever stadium this happens at, it needs to be dealt with. As i dont know any more than that, well wait for the process to happen. Speaking on 5live, former tottenham midfielderjermainejenas said Manchester Uniteds six game unbeaten run in the premier league is over after a moment to forget for their goalkeeper david de gea. He gifted watford the lead after letting ismaila sarrs strike slip through his hands, not something hell want to watch again. Then a penalty from troy deeney moments later secured watfords first home win of the season. They stay bottom, six points from safety. Images of evertons final design for their new stadium they deserved it more than us. They took the chances. Fair play to them, good luck, and we didnt take our chances. We were too slow. Youve got to earn every little inch, every little point, in this league matter who you play against. Images of evertons final design for their new stadium at Bramley Moore dock on liverpools waterfront have been made available to fans. The club will submit a Detailed Planning application for the 52,000 capacity venue today, which will cost an estimated £500 million. Everton hope to move to the new stadium by 2023, and plan to re develop their current goodison park home for the community. Liverpool have arrived back in england with another trophy to add to their cabinet. Club captain Jordan Henderson proudly held the club world cup, a trophy they won after beating brazilian side flamengo in the final on saturday evening. Theyll now turn their focus back to the premier league when they travel to second placed leicester on boxing day. Boxing day. Michael van gerwen is a step closer to successfully defending his title at the world darts championship. Hes through to the fourth round after beating englands ricky evans 4 0 at alexandra palace. Van gerwen will face another englishman, stephen bunting, in the last 16. Bath have ended a run of five defeats in all competitions after thrashing london irish in rugbys premiership. Its rained so much that the course is just like a tough mudder the conditions caused chaos for the riders, almost impossible to get up to any speed. Plenty of spills weve carefully picked out for you. But several did manage to complete the course, the winners triumphantly crossing the line covered in mud thats a new skill, to be able to cycle in those conditions. Thats a new skill, to be able to cycle in those conditionslj thats a new skill, to be able to cycle in those conditions. I mean, well, it just looks dangerous. Cycle in those conditions. I mean, well, it just looks dangerousm cycle in those conditions. I mean, well, itjust looks dangerous. It is more like waterskiing im surprised they didnt cancel it lad just to be alive and to have survived the whole thing at the end thank you very much glad. Do you still need to do your christmas food shop . If so, youre not alone. 13 million of us are expected to head for the supermarkets today. Its the busiest day of the year for grocery shopping. Seans in birmingham to tell us more. The last thing you need, isnt it . People have been coming through and very kindly, alan and christine, quiet day ahead . Yes. No. Hectic whats the plan, you have got six parsnips . Anything else . Almost aloe, bread, finished it today. Not anything for tomorrow last minute . Are you spending as much as you ever do on christmas dinner . Yeah, about the same. I always make a list and stick to it. So what is yourjob . Pushing the trolley apparently theres less alcohol being bought this does that make sense to you . More low alcohol stuff . Yes, not drinking as much. Everyone will cut down, yeah. I will let you crack on because you will not get your food ifi because you will not get your food if i keep talking to you all day 13. 1 million hitting the shops today, theres two people there and something for the supermarkets to ta ke something for the supermarkets to take into account, the changing trends and our change in spending habits. I will move my trolley and come over here and speak to diane. At springboard you count the number of people that are coming through shops . Absolutely. Compared to last year, is there a feeling that we are willing to spend more and hit the shops harder or less . Definitely less. We saw a boost around black friday, the foot fall mother volume of people visiting shops and stores and our retail destinations was up 3. 3 , that was a great start, but we thought it would go into a lull, and it has done, and fewer people are shopping since black friday and it took a lot of the steam out of Christmas Trading and even Super Saturday, the last saturday before christmas, was 7 down on last year. What about online food shopping, more of that . It wasnt as big as we thought in the early days. Most people like to come to a food store like this and touch it and feel it and see it and get the sense of christmas. Now is the perfect time to do your Christmas Shopping so i will let you crack on and i will get my trolley back and we will speak to somebody at morrisons running the show, gail paddy is the director of own brand food here. Own brand these days, at a lot of the supermarket sweep are seeing that takeover. Is christmas a big time of year for non brands and what you are looking for at morrisons . Own brand is really important because a majority of fresh food. People are coming in for turkeys, beefjoints, vegetables, everything for the christmas table. Are you seeing a difference between Online Shopping and coming in store . It is starting to get really busy. It is busy. All our delivery slots have been booked for quite a while, so we are seeing customers knowing online but lots wa nt customers knowing online but lots want the experience in store, walking around, looking at the options to decide what they will buy for families this christmas. Why is today the busiest day and not tomorrow . If it was me. It will be made tomorrow getting my vegetables for christmas at the last minute. So why monday . People dont like to leave it until Christmas Eve to come through to get their fresh food, so a lot of people like to shop today, know they have everything in their fridge and then they can relax and enjoy and lots of people celebrate on Christmas Eve with families and friends, lots of christmas carols, lots of things for kids so people like to enjoy Christmas Eve at home if they can. Thank you and a big thank you to your staff working hard for people to get their christmas dinner. Was there anything else you wanted . Dinner. Was there anything else you wanted . Weve got dinner. Was there anything else you wanted . Weve got mince pies, weve got the dates, is that it . To be honest, sean, at the moment, dates are the last thing im worried about. It is bring your dog to work day at breakfast, and this is louises dog, ruby. She was invited in because we are doing a piece on how to look after your pets and keep them calm at christmas and we thought ruby would be a great example of not being calm at christmas. Good girl how old is she . She has had a lot of christmas things she hasnt had already, as you can see, she things she hasnt had already, as you can see, she can things she hasnt had already, as you can see, she can see, she wants to eat the tree. I have a discarded porridge pot and she quite likes that that is coming up, how to survive with your pets at christmas good girl carol is at Blenheim Palace with a look at this mornings weather. It isa it is a little more civilised there, carol. Good morning. The puppy is adorable. Good morning from lanham palace which has been transformed into this gorgeous exhibition, alice in the palace which runs until january five. This is the great hall and why am i holding a key . This key is normally under lock and key and it opens those great doors, the entrance to Blenheim Palace. Now the oakfrom entrance to Blenheim Palace. Now the oak from those doors was taken from oak from those doors was taken from oak trees on the estate which are the oldest oak trees in europe. And in front of me you can see this pyramid of cards standing over five metres tall. Each one has an original illustration from the book, alice in wonderland. Now it is a pleasa nt alice in wonderland. Now it is a pleasant enough start outside for many parts of the uk but it has been cold in the highlands. The Environment Agency after all this rain has currently got one Flood Warning in wales and 80 still in force Flood Warning in wales and 80 still inforce in Flood Warning in wales and 80 still in force in england. So the Weather Forecast for today is one of some showers, some dry weather and for the next few days that sums it up nicely. It will not be raining continually and on Christmas Day itself we expected to sunny and dry. So you can see the pressure child, dominating our weather. There is a weather front in the north west, enhancing the showers, more prolific here as well and we have another weather front drifting from the west towards the east across england and wales. Showers here will be fewer and further between, particularly in the east. In between those showers were looking some bright spells, sunny skies developing and there will be quite windy today. Windier than yesterday. Temperature wise, generally we look at about 7d 11 degrees. Wind is cold overnight and it may reach three degrees in the highlands. Yesterday the temperature in some part did not even break freezing. Through the evening and overnight, weatherfront freezing. Through the evening and overnight, weather front from the south west will introduce rain moving northwards and eastwards taking rain into Northern Ireland, Northern England, the midlands and also the south east quadrant of the uk. Showers behind it and ahead of it, some clear skies but not quite as cold a night of one just gone and still quite windy, particularly so across the south west of england and the english channel. Tomorrow we start off with all that rain, slowly but surely it will move off into the north sea, behind it they will be some showers, the heaviest of which will be in South West England and also wales. From Northern Ireland and scotland you can still see a few showers dotted around as well and temperatures again in the mid single figures. The Christmas Day we have a transient ridge of High Pressure a cross have a transient ridge of High Pressure across a so have a transient ridge of High Pressure across a so things are settled, a lot of sunshine, few the day however high cloud will come in from the west turning sunshine in the west hazy. Temperatures just a little bit above average for the time of yearand little bit above average for the time of year and certainly not expecting any snow. It will be a White Christmas in the uk. If you are travelling later on, we are also expecting some dense fog on Christmas Day. So back to you in the studio and perhaps maybe ruby . She is still here. Thank you so much. Ce ntre is still here. Thank you so much. Centre can take the freeway down run, run, rudolph, like a merry go round run, rudolph, run. Run, run, rudolph. That music is having an amazing and calming effect on ruby. Maybe that is what i need to do. So if you feel the pressure. To do. So if you feel the pressure. If you feel the pressure ofa pressure. If you feel the pressure of a perfect christmas dont panic. Weve assembled a panel of experts to help get you through. Joining us now is the gp dr amir khan, retail expert Kate Hardcastle and pet behaviourist helen motteram, with ruby. Lets start with keeping well. This isa time lets start with keeping well. This is a time of bugs getting around, what should we be doing . Is a time of bugs getting around, what should we be doing7m is a time of bugs getting around, what should we be doing . It is a time of bugs heading around. Flu virus, norovirus. It is important to enjoy yourself but it is so easy to plunk yourself on the sofa after a big meal and watch christmas television. Keep active, some good food. Take the dog for a walk and also the social activity. If you have elderly relatives around it is nice for them if you are looking after patients. Sorry, i am thinking of work, if you are looking after relatives with dementia at home there is all sorts of things you can do over christmas to help with them. Keep the portion size small. Keep them interested in the conversation going on. And people who are commute keep them involved. But drink more water, dontjust drink alcohol. Hydration is really important and controlling our own Portion Sizes as well. It is easy to eat up to 4000 calories in one meal. Seriously, it really is. So pace yourself. Have your breakfast, nice Healthy Breakfast so you do not snag through the day. There are so many things we can do. Lets go to ruby. Iam things we can do. Lets go to ruby. I am nervous about this item, she is quite bouncy and is an exciting time. She is really doing well. She has never been in the studio. What is your advice for people with dogs and cats over christmas, to try and make it easier for them . It can get exciting with visitors coming around so exciting with visitors coming around so it is about keeping to routine, having a plan in place for when visitors visit. Making sure that the dog has a safe place to go and obviously keeping those christmas goodies away. That is the big thing in our household. I look at those chocolates and chocolate is really bad for dogs, isnt it . How do you stop them. She is a labrador and labradors love food, what you do about the extra around . It is management and control. Keeping the chocolate out of sight, that will be chocolate out of sight, that will be chocolate on the christmas tree, in the presence, keeping your dog away from that. Giving the mother activities, enrichment activities, get them some toys, things like a kong that you can stuff with doggy treats. An outlet to keep the focus of the chocolate. My dog once found a chocolate advent calendar, scratched the back off. It can be risky. And if something happened like that, call your vet immediately because it can be very serious. Last minute shopping. If people are out there and thinking they still need to go shopping, what would your advice be . And to keep prices down as well. It is easy to spend a lot of muggy. Make sure you you can budget. Dont stretch yourself trying to overspend. There is a lot of emotional selling going on at the moment to get you to react to that. And keeping to a budget is everything, particularly once that level arrives. Think about the environment and sustainability as well. Dont go last minute crazy buying everything you can because it is there. I have a few ideas here. If you are buying for a family, buying five presence, condense that into one. I call it a cinema hamper. Vouchers from a local cinema just here, popcorn, chocolates, things like that and the family get a night out on me and the family, probably a new year when the budget is challenging. You know what we were saying about the dangers of chocolate. . They get saying about the dangers of chocolate. . They get to enjoy some time together which lasts into the new year and it is great because you are buying one present instead of four. We did a piece the other day on breakfast about experiences, things to do are these days sometimes more popular than just giving stuff. We all have a lot of stuff already. There is a huge spend on experiences, things you can do now from african drum lessons to other things. But we do not use 20 of gift vouchers. No . So maybe give cash. I dont know about you but attach something to the gift voucher that weighs a bit, perhaps a treat so it does not get lost in the wrapping paper. That keeps it in a safe place. That is vital. And thinking of the environment, dont rush out and buy more wrapping paper today. You can use some lovely material or a ttl, you can wrap it up material or a ttl, you can wrap it up and then. It is called furoshiki, the art of wrapping things in material. This cost me £3 and i got the children to draw some little pictures to fill in for grandma and grandpa and there is a calendar there. £3 and quite personalised. And from a parents point of view it kept the kids quiet for ages. They are super kept the kids quiet for ages. They are super hyped because it is christmas. But grandma and grandpa might be watching now and the present is ruined. It was £3. I did well, mum and dad. Ruby. Good girl. Good girl. Thank you for not disgracing yourself. You have been brilliant. And just the thing is to enjoy it. That is the important thing. Thank you all. Thank you, ruby. Can i go home now . You have to stay but we will get a taxi for ruby. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london, im geeta pendse. Our headlines today. Racism in football. These are just a few of the 13 million shoppers who are getting their groceries today ahead of christmas. It will be a busy day for the supermarket and i will be looking at all the trends here just outside birmingham. Good morning from Blenheim Palace. This choir will be singing throughout the rest of the programme. Outside, it will be a dry day with a few showers. We will be back with more later. Its monday, december 23rd. Our top story. There are calls for a government inquiry into racism in football. Announcer racist behaviour amongst spectators is interfering with the game. Please remember that in football, there is no place for racism. At the end of the match, the chelsea skipper explained what happened. Janes here now talk us through the reaction to yesterdays events . It is all over social media. Just to explain, the protocol of what happens when there is a report of chanting. It is not the first time there has been alleged racist chanting in the premier league u nfortu nately, chanting in the premier league unfortunately, but it is the first time we have seen or heard one of these announcements in the stadium in the premier league and it is step one in fifas and racism. They said racism is interfering with the game, please remember there is no place in football for racism. That announcement was made three times. The second step is to suspend the match and send the players off the pitch. The third step, if the racism continues, is to abandon the match. None of that happen. It was the echo of the first one. It was to reiterate to the crowd that this had happened and to cease. They have called for a government enquiry into racism on football and earlier somebody said that he felt the current social climate had contributed to this. We have got to use this as a starting point. It is a new government now and it is an opportunity for those to take the lead. A lot has been spoken about the language and culture of politics and this is an opportunity to reset the tone in a positive way. Calling for a government enquiry. Meanwhile, the sports minister nigel adams has spoken about this on social media and he called the incident depressing. He said he would be speaking with tottenhams directors today. Tottenham in the meantime have said they have launched an enquiry and they have said they will ta ke enquiry and they have said they will take the strongest possible action against any individual found to be behaving in such a way, including stadium bans. And Antonio Rudiger has tweeted and has said. And Antonio Rudiger has tweeted and has said. It is really sad to see racism again at a football match, but i think its very important to talk about it in public. If not, it will be forgotten again in a couple of days, as always. I dont want to involve tottenham as an entire club into this situation as i know that just a couple of idiots were the offenders. I got a lot of supportive messages on social media from spurs fans as well in the last hours thank you a lot for this. The premier league as yet have not reacted, but there will be pressure on them to act. Thank you very much. You will be back with the rest of the sport later as well. You will be back with the rest of the sport later as well. A small town in australia, thats home to four hundred people, has been almost entirely destroyed by fire. Balmoral, in New South Wales, has been engulfed by flames, as emergency crews struggle to contain whats been described as catastrophic bushfires. Steve harrison from balmoral explained how lucky he was to escape. When it came, it came in, like, 3 4 minutes. A big plume of black smoke and embers fell out. Iran around the building and turned the pumps on, weve got sprinklers on the roofs and the walls. That took me five minutes i suppose and by the time i got back to this shed here, got it wet, iran to my ute and the garden was on fire and the drive was on fire and the roof was on fire so i realised i couldnt evacuate. The day before i built myself a small kiln down the back and. A coffin sized kilnjust big enough for me to crawl inside. I hid in there for half an hour while the fire went over. That was my plan b. I planned to leave, but didnt get to. It came too quick. What a plan b. Can you imagine how terrifying that must have been, to lie ina terrifying that must have been, to lie in a box for 30 minutes plus, just waiting as the fire swirled around. A little earlier, we managed to catch up with steve on the phone. There was no Internet Connection because of the fires, but he told us how he was doing now. Iama bit i am a bit shaky and emotional and i am alive, i am glad, it is ok. The airwas luminous am alive, i am glad, it is ok. The air was luminous orange and red with plumes of red flames and black smoke. It was very hard to breathe and it was very hot. But i was close to the ground and i was in an insulated box. It was not sealed, it was open at the end. I had already put a bottle of water in a bucket and afire put a bottle of water in a bucket and a fire blanket and an extinguisher in their in preparation. I was lucky, i am glad idid preparation. I was lucky, i am glad i did that preparation, it saved my life. It was absolutely terrifying, no two words about it. Steve harrison with a pretty lucky escape. Stormy weather has been affecting parts of southwest europe, causing flooding and extreme winds. The crew of a cargo ship, off the coast of sardinia, had to be airlifted to safety after it began to capsize. The vessel hit rough seas and ploughed into a rocky stretch of coastline. The 12 crew members were rescued and no one was injured. Carroll will have the Weather Forecast for us. Nothing quite so dramatic. We have had a lot of rain over the last couple of weeks, but it is calming down as we approach christmas. You are watching brea kfast. You are watching breakfast. The family of harry dunn say theyre incredibly reassured after meeting the home secretary priti patel to discuss the potential extradition of a woman from the us. Anne sacoolas has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the crash in which the 19 year old was killed in august. The dunn family spokesperson, radd seigerjoins us now. Thank you for giving us your time this morning. I guess the headline words that struck people after that meeting yesterday was that the family are feeling very reassured. What is it that has given them that reassurance . Good morning. It was an amazing meeting, a very powerful and emotional meeting yesterday. The main issue for us over these last couple of months is whether there would be any political interference in the decision. Once the lady was charge, and lets remind you that this lady is innocent until proven otherwise, and priti patel, the home secretary, gave the family the strongest reassurance that there will be no political interference. This will all be dealt with under the rule of law and due process. She has to follow strict legal guidelines. That was an issue for us andi guidelines. That was an issue for us and i am glad to say we walked away from that meeting certain that they will be no untoward interference. Certain, that is an interesting word. Had you been given any time of timescale about when this extradition could potentially happen . The only thing the home secretary is able to say is that as far as her work is concerned and as the file works its way through the courts in london to her officials and then to her, she was confident it would be dealt with in a matter of days. She then passes it to the american authorities and we are entirely in their hands as too quickly they deal with it. Now we canjust quickly they deal with it. Now we can just let the authorities do their work. It will be no surprise to you that i will put this family away for a little while. Now that they have got that little sense of closure, they need to get on with their grieving and begin their process of rebuilding their shattered lives. Talking about the response of the authorities, the officials in the United States, they have called this charging not a helpful development. They have talked about it not being a proportionate response. Some people might say given the strength of language coming out of washington, what makes you so hopeful you will getan what makes you so hopeful you will get an extradition and a formal Court Process here . I am just used to over the last couple of years taking anything that that Administration Says with a pinch of salt. They also used the word is that this would be an egregious abuse to send her back. That is an upside down, reverse argument. The only abuse of power that happened here was recalling the lady back to washington, which should never have happened. We said this lady never had diplomatic immunity. We are very concerned that as usual they will try and confuse the argument and try to get Public Opinion on their side. Lets not forget that on friday the cps concluded that, and it is an allegation and has to be proven in court, that this lady was driving dangerously that night and in this country if you are driving dangerously and take someones life, thatis dangerously and take someones life, that is an offence. We are not going to get embroiled in any public arguments with the trump administration. We are simply going to let the case go through the legal process. There is a very tight extradition treaty between the two countries. The americans have never turned down an extradition in the past from the uk and i cannot imagine fora past from the uk and i cannot imagine for a single second that they will use this case to set that very dangerous precedent. There are reports in the papers this morning saying the family are expecting or hoping to meet with the Prime Minister borisjohnson. Hoping to meet with the Prime MinisterBoris Johnson. Do hoping to meet with the Prime Minister borisjohnson. Do you understand that is going to happen . Yes, in our discussion yesterday it was made clear to us that Boris Johnson wants to meet with us as soon as johnson wants to meet with us as soon as possible so that he can extend his condolences as well. It isa extend his condolences as well. It is a meeting i have been trying to arrange for a little while. Obviously the general election got in the way, but our constituency mp, andrea leadsom, has been fa ntastically andrea leadsom, has been fantastically supportive and has said that boris wants to meet with us as well. We will look forward to that in the new year and it will bring the family some comfort. |j guess that takes it up another notch. The mp, then the home secretary yesterday, no potentially the Prime Minister in the new year and then you have to convince the authorities in the United States and i suppose donald trump as well. This is going to the very highest level. What is it like for this Family Living here at christmas time without their son knowing that at the very top levels of politics on both sides of the atlantic their lives and harrys life is being talked about in this way . Dont forget just talked about in this way . Dont forgetjust a talked about in this way . Dont forget just a few weeks talked about in this way . Dont forgetjust a few weeks ago the family and forgetjust a few weeks ago the family and i were in the Oval Office Meeting president trump, talking about the case. We still have not been able to process it. We are just an anonymous set been able to process it. We are just an anonymous set of people in rural south northamptonshire. We are not used to all this media hullabaloo. It is still very alien to us. Look, this family, as harry was lying in hospital dying, made a promise to him that they would do everything they could to bring justice to him. We will not rest and i will not rest until this lady is back in the United Kingdom facing the legal system. Just as if you and i had taken harrys system. Just as if you and i had ta ken harrys life system. Just as if you and i had taken harrys life that night, we would have to do the same thing. We have always said no one is above the law. Do you have a date yet for the borisjohnson law. Do you have a date yet for the Boris Johnson meeting . We do not, but i am hoping it will be very early in the new year. Thank you for joining as from london this morning. You are watching bbc breakfast. It isa you are watching bbc breakfast. It is a lovely day and today carroll is at Blenheim Palace which is looking utterly stunning. Good morning. It has been transformed into alice in wonderland. And this is the mad hatters tea party. The mad hatter and time has punished him and it is at six oclock. This is the cake and this is the march hare. The crockery all around, there are over 200 bits of crockery, the creative director sourced it from ebay, from france, from all over the place. Then we have this deck of cards. You would have this deck of cards. You would have seen at eight oclock to five metre won out in the hole. This one is smaller. This is one of the greens servants and another card. A lot of packs of cards were brought infor lot of packs of cards were brought in for the purpose of decorating the palace and it looks stunning. You can come and see it yourselves, it is open until the beginning of january. The Weather Forecast for todayis january. The Weather Forecast for today is not very festive. For the next few days we are not expecting snow, apart from perhaps on the very tops of the hills. We have got some showers around today, some of which will be merging to give longer spells of showers. Low pressure is dominating our weather today and we have got a weather front in the north west which is enhancing the showers. We have also got a weather front moving west to east which is bringing some showers with it as well. In between those two areas of showers, we see sunshine develop as we go through the course of the day. The showers in the east are isolated but very prolific. Temperature wise we are looking at roughly between 511d. We are looking at roughly between 5 11d. Where we have had a cold start to the day, like 7 in the highlands, temperatures will only get up to about three degrees. It will be clouding over in the south west and through the evening and overnight rain will be pushing in from the south west, getting into the midlands and Northern Ireland and the eastern quarter of the uk by tomorrow morning. It will be windy across the south west and in the english channel, a touch of frost in the highlands as well. As we go through the day tomorrow, we are looking at that rain weakening and pushing off into the north sea. Behind that, there will be showers and we will see some showers in Northern Ireland and also western scotland. But a lot of dry weather as well. By the time we get to Christmas Day ridge of High Pressure will be building across us, so that means settled and fine weather. Good news if you are travelling. There will be plenty of sunshine around, so will be plenty of sunshine around, so you will be plenty of sunshine around, so you can will be plenty of sunshine around, so you can walk off that lunch. In the west it turns hazy. Temperature is slightly above where it should be at this stage in december. If you are travelling on Christmas Day evening, we are expecting some dense fog. Iam evening, we are expecting some dense fog. I am not here by myself this morning. It is my pleasure to introduce to the oxford if enquire and they are singing all i want for christmas is you. I dont want a lot for christmas, there is just one thing i i dont want a lot for christmas, there isjust one thing i need. I dont care about the festivities or the christmas tree. I dont need to hang my stocking their app the fireplace. Because i just their app the fireplace. Because ijust want their app the fireplace. Because i just want you for their app the fireplace. Because ijust want you for my own. Make my wish come true. Make my wish come true. All make my wish come true. All| make my wish come true. All i want for christmas is you. That is lovely. We are rocking away here. While we are celebrating christmas and hearing the songs it is sometimes easy to forget that christmas can be a lonely time for some people, especially elderly people. But for the last ten years, one woman from sheffield has been on a mission to ensure nobody in the city eats christmas lunch alone. Now known as mrs christmas, Gloria Stewart hosts more than 400 people at her events. Shejoins us now, along with irene whos a regular guest. You have posted more than 400 people. Yes. One time i had up to 500. Gosh. This is irene and you have become a regular at these events as well. Yes. How did you become mrs christmas . events as well. Yes. How did you become mrs christmas . I took an elderly relative to hospital and while i was in the waiting room there was a lady sat at the side of me and there was a lady sat at the side of me and i thought she looked a bit down in the dumps, so ijust started chatting and asked her if she was looking forward to christmas. The reply that she gave me shocked me. She said, no, i go off to bed with a flask of coffee and a packet of biscuits for christmas until all the Festive Season is over. That really took me back. It was not uncommon because in the waiting room there we re because in the waiting room there were quite a number of elderly people and it was very similar, most of them had the same reply. So i went home, got a little pen and paper, doodled away to see how i could make a difference. If i had got the ladys number and address, i wa nted got the ladys number and address, i wanted to invite her. But as you can imagine you dont go up to anybody and say, do you want to come to my home . That was 13 years ago . And it has grown and grown . It has. That is what happened. I wrote begging letters out to try and get people to donate food. We got the School Mothers to start peeling sprouts and potatoes and sweets. And we had sweet and turnip, which is horrible to peel. Then 87 people came. That isa to peel. Then 87 people came. That is a lot of suite. And i thought it would be a one off. The stories i heard from these people was heartbreaking. You met because he went to one of the christmas lunches. Tell us what happened. She just got in touch with me. In fact i phoned her to see if i could be a volunteer. Then she said, you are on your own, why dont you come . That is howl your own, why dont you come . That is how i started going. What is the atmosphere like . Wonderful, lovely. Everybody mix is in and it is lovely. How much difference does that make to you at christmas and your life . We look forward to it every year. We meet new friends and everything. You serve a christmas lunch so nobody has. Everybody has the opportunity to sit down and have a christmas lunch during the festive period. It is notjust for a christmas lunch during the festive period. It is not just for the elderly, it is not. The youngest one i have had is 21. This year the youngest one was 34. People think why do people like that go . But people dont walk around with a sticker on the head saying i am lonely. How do you find them . I can go into supermarkets or into a coffee shop and if i see somebody sitting on their own i will say, do you mind if i sit with you and start chatting. I go into the town centre andi chatting. I go into the town centre and i always have leaflets in my bag and i always have leaflets in my bag and if and i always have leaflets in my bag and if i see somebody i give them a leaflet. What do you think of this lady . She is marvellous. I dont know how she does it. How do you do it . It is a full time job, isnt it . It is very hard and i am not in the best of health. You do it on yourself, dont you . I do, if could become a registered charity, i would do that. But i am just an independent, little housewife. You rely on donations and then afterwards you give things out as well . That is how the homeless came into it and the nursing homes. It is just growing and growing. This year has not been as good because obviously i have not had the donations in and when they did come m, donations in and when they did come in, it was quite late. That is why it was cut down to 400 this year. Cut down to 400, that is still an awful lot of people. I wonder how many Brussel Sprouts that will be . We do have a chef now. You are not a cook yourself . As my kids know, i am not the best. I thought the first year, how am i going to do this . As i say, i am not the best cook. I didnt want to poison anybody, so i approached a local outside caterers and they declined at first and said, there is no way i can do it for you. Then i badgered and badgered and in the end he did and it all went from there. The volunteers get as much out of it by seeing the faces, as what i do. I bet you look forward to it next year, i ring . Oh, yes. We have been friends ever since. I call round to her house and there is always a cup of tea for me. An appeal to get working. Oh, no lovely to meet you. Best of luck. You are a fantastic lady. Lovely to see you. Happy christmas. Cani lovely to see you. Happy christmas. Can i apologise for the bits of dog hair that are from louises dog here earlier. We had a special guest, louises dog ruby was here earlier. She did very well because she did not eat the spilt chocolates. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news. Still to come this morning. Its the disastrous production thats taken the west end by storm now the goes wrong show is heading for bbc one. Well meet the cast just before nine. Good morning. If you buy a Charity Christmas card, you assume youre doing some good. But could those cards have been packed using forced prison labour . Also in the programme hitting that musical high note in mumbai we look at how india is attracting the likes of u2 and katie perry to perform
