We meet the people looking for solutions to climate change, and follow the work of those striving to tackle this global threat in climate defenders. The australian Prime Minister, scott morrison, has acknowledged public anger at his decision to go on holiday while his country faces a bushfire crisis. Mr morrison said if he could go back, he would have made a different choice. The fires are expected to worsen with more hot dry weather expected. Mr morrison did acknowledge the role of climate change, but said warming temperatures couldnt be connected to any single fire. Gareth barlow reports. This is the remarkable, almost apocalyptic scene facing firefighters tackling australias deadly and devastating wildfires. Fire chiefs described saturday as an awful day. As thousands of personnel tackle raging infernos, the countrys Prime Minister, scott morrison, has been heavily criticised for being on holiday in hawaii, but the pm has cut short his trip to return home. I get it that people would have been upset to know that i was holidaying with my family while their families were under great stress. They know that i am not going to stand there and hold a hose, iam not a trained firefighter. Im comforted by the fact that australians would like me to be here, just simply so i can be here. An area the size of belgium has been torched by the fires. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and at least ten people killed. Scores of blazes continue to grip the country. This is certainly taking its toll, and so too is the geographic spread of the activity across the country. In september, most of our effort was really concentrated in new south wales, but now the fires are spreading from the Queensland Border down to the south coast of new south wales. This week has seen record high temperatures repeatedly broken. Scott morrisons government has long defended the use of fossil skills, and have been increasingly criticised for this, by people who have linked the fires to climate change. The government said they would take action on climate change. There is no argument, in my view and the governments view, and any government in this country, about the links between broader issues of Global Climate change arson, lightning strikes, even self combusting piles of manure, have been blamed for triggering the blazes. First though, the authorities have to try and take control of the flames before they can try and control the causes to prevent future fires. Gareth barlow, bbc news. 0ur correspondent shiamaa khalil is in balmoral one of the worst hit places in new south wales. Im just going to try and make my way to one of the houses over there. You have to watch every step you take. I mean, there is still smoke coming out of tree trunks, still smouldering. Watch it and itjust gets you right in the throat, it becomes very hard to breathe. We also have to be very careful about the trees around us. Some of them have been completely burnt out. They are still standing, but they could fall any time. Look over there. Look at that. Look at that smoke, and just beyond it, look at that devastation. Nothing has escaped those fires. Nothing escaped the flames. And the destruction is absolute. You can see why firefighters are saying it is too dangerous for people to come back to these areas. This house has been completely destroyed. I mean, you can see the remains of what used to be a kitchen, cars completely out, but really, what they are afraid of now is those trees. The fact that these trees have been completely burned, and some of them have fallen off. That is the danger now, and that is why people arent allowed back to those areas. Tesco has suspended production at a factory in china, following allegations forced prison labour was used to pack Charity Christmas cards. It comes after the sunday times reported a six Year Old Girl from south london found a message from shanghai prisoners hidden in a box of cards. 0ur correspondent greg mckenziejoins me now. It was a six Year Old Girl from south london, who had brought this one box of Christmas Cards. She was setting about writing to her friends and family in them, when she is reported to have discovered that one of the Christmas Cards had already been written in in Block Capital letters. The message simply read, please help us notify human rights organisations. The message went on to say that they need help wanted the message to go out there. So this is being reported by the sunday times, it is there front page this morning. Obviously, a big surprise for a six year old to see this message. They then contacted the newspaper, who are running the story today. Tescos have immediately put out a statement, saying it has halted production at a factory in china, which is alleged to have used forced labour to have made these Christmas Cards. Tesco say they are shocked by these allegations, and will delist the company that prints the cards, which is actually based in china, if they are deemed to have done any wrong doing here. What is more interesting is that in this message, it asks for the recipient to contact a man who was jailed in prison in shanghai some time ago. He has said that he then looked into this after the family contacted him, and he said he contacted him, and he said he co nta cted ex contacted him, and he said he contacted ex prisoners, who have confirmed there is forced labour taking place at the jail. We know this person has hit the headlines for many years gone by. Early in 2012, there were allegations that prisoners were being forced to make halloween decorations, and only last year, halloween decorations, and only last yea r, two halloween decorations, and only last year, two huge fashion outlets were accused of using prisoners at this jail to make their clothes. Thank you. 88 flood warnings remain in place across the south, the midlands, and the east of england, and 1 other in wales following another night of heavy rain. We have got more rain on sunday, and more rain on monday as well, so it is not going to get any better. I think the key thing here is it is not going to get to the severe situation, where we have got a significant number of properties. It is going to remain high until christmas, but after that we have got a dry period, so hopefully things will calm down then. But this was the sight that greeted motorists on the m25 near chertsey in surrey. A tornado sucking up things from the ground and throwing them around. It left a trail of damage to these houses. Residents say they couldnt believe what they were seeing. With christmas approaching, millions of people will be taking to the roads in the coming days. The duke of edinburgh has spent a second night in a Central London hospital. Prince philip, whos 98, is being treated for a pre existing condition, on the advice of his personal doctors. 0ur correspondent simonjones sent this update from the king edward vii hospital. Well, theres been no official update overnight from the palace. In fact, we havent heard anything from them formally since friday, when Prince Philip was admitted to hospital. I think it is worth reiterating what they said back then. They stressed that the decision to bring him here was precautionary on the advice of his doctor. I dont think we can read too much into the fact we are not getting regular updates on the palace because in previous years when Prince Philip has been hospital, we have heard very little from them until the point when he is ready to be released from hospital. They are still not saying what he is being treated for. We know that in the past he has had an operation on his hip. He has also had a stent fitted to deal with a blocked artery. The reason there is some concern is because he is obviously 98 years old. And because of the fact we have seen very little of him in public in the last couple of years. He retired from official royal duties, so sightings of him are rare. He used to carry out some 300 engagements per year. He did, of course, have a nasty car accident in sandringham earlier in the year, but emerged pretty much unscathed from that. He was seen at a wedding in windsor back in may, but apart from that, we cannot see him to gauge his health ourselves. The royalfamily are hoping he will be well enough to leave hospital in time to spend christmas with the queen, although he did miss celebrations back in 2011 because, once again, he was in hospital having an operation to mps have called on whirlpool to offer refunds or swift compensation, as it recalls half a million washing machines. The machines sold under the hotpoint and indesit brands have been identified as potential fire hazards. Whirlpool is to begin the recall in the second week of january. But mps says the delay means customers have been severely let down. While many of us might complain about watching old films and tv shows at christmas, people with dementia can benefit from re watching the classics. Research by nhs england suggests it can stimulate memories and help keep the brain active. Here are some classic tv moments. Bells ringing out from the old english spire. Grandmother pausing a while to admire grandfather resting his nuts by the fire. Both a great Christmas Card to view. Weve only got a couple of minutes. Were the first turn. Mr lucas youre forgetting the fairy dust. Fancy spending as much as this. Well, it is christmas, aint it i dont know what to say. That has never stopped me. I mean, im overwhelmed, sort of all confused, i mean, you get a surprise like this and you cant help thinking, maybe hes nicked them. Father christmas has been down that chimney a long time. It is not his fault. He gives the presents away, and then they give him a drink. Oh, i see, yeah. A piece of cake, by three oclock he is paralytic. He does not need cake. Its a Merry Christmas from me and a happy new yearfrom him. Good night. Some great christmas tv moments. Professor Alistair Burns is the nhs englands director for dementia, hejoins me now from salford. I think it is true that people with dementia can feel quite isolated, particularly at christmas time, when there is lots happening. The advantages of listening to, whether it is an old song, a tv series or an old film, is that it can bring back memories, but importantly, it allows people to connect with theirfamilies, so that they can talk about a shared experience. Are you saying that christmas can be quite a difficult time for people with dementia . It can be a challenging time, there is lots happening. There are visits, lots going on, but by listening to old songs and watching old films and taking things, if you like, a bit more casually and a bit more apace, it can be a very enjoyable time for people. There are specific things as well that can be done to make sure that people with dementia and memory problems can enjoy it. What is the advice to families with people suffering from dementia at christmas . What should they be doing . I think the important thing to remember is that everybody is an individual. So it is not a case of one size fits all. I think it is key to involve people with dementia. I think the most important thing is to make sure perhaps, when you are setting up the decorations, dont do it all at once, do it in stages and make sure someone is involved, take a bit more time. If there are lots of family visits, instead of everyone coming at once, they could be spread over a little while. Another thing that is important is, for many people, having a christmas dinner and a huge plate of food is a good thing. But for someone, an older person, where perhaps their appetite isnt as good as it might have been, that can be quite daunting. I suppose, as you are saying, christmas is a time when lots of people, often with families coming, visitors, relatives, it is quite a busy time with lots of presents being opened. So in a sense, these old films and tv shows can be quite soothing and peaceful for any anyone suffering from dementia . That is absolutely right, a person with dementia can have a challenge with this. But taking a bit of time, looking at a shared memory. We know that people with dementia, memories from some time ago tend to be better preserved, so there might be an emotional connection with a film clip or a series, and it can promote talking, it can promote people with dementia feeling involved. That has a very positive effect on peoples self esteem, and at this very special time of year, it allows people to be connected. The headlines on bbc news. That is all the sport for now. About 1 of the population has some form of epilepsy, which would suggest more than 60 Million People worldwide. Yet for many, drugs dont work very well. Now a team of Cambridge University scientists has built a tiny Electronic Device that could eventually sit on the brain to work out when the patient is about to have a seizure and deliver a drug to stop it. 0ur science correspondent Richard Westcott reports. In a very, very clean room at Cambridge University, they are building a device that could one day transform treatment for epilepsy. So chris, i take it you are not dressing like this forfun, fun as it is . Yeah, no actually, for the electronics we are making, it is really important to be in an ultra clean environment. No dust, nothing in here . No, no dust, nothing in here. It will sit on the brain and deliver a drug when it senses a seizure is coming. So it feels a bit counterintuitive to have a device in your brain. How do you stop it kind of being rejected . So actually, the device works very similarly to cells in the brain. It can sense what other nearby cells are doing, and then know exactly when to release chemicals to tell the other cells what to do. It is exactly how the neurones in the brain work. One of the biggest obstacles to treating epilepsy and other Brain Disorders is getting the drug to where it is needed. A thing called the blood brain barrier stops many drugs getting through. This device could bypass that problem. So the benefit of having a small device directly in the brain is we only deliver drugs where they are needed, so you mitigate side effects. And because they are going exactly where they are needed, they are highly effective. So we have found a very small amount of the drug can go a very long way, if it is delivered in the right location. The only part of the device that actually goes into the brain is this tiny needle here that is the width of two human hairs. And if you look at it under the microscope, this red patch here is the drug that is delivered when you need it. And how does it know when you need it . When someone is about to have an epileptic seizure, the electrical activity in the brain changes, and sensors on the device pick that up. So there are many potential advocations of this technology , where we combine the ability to sense with the ability to locally deliver the drug. Other applications we have been looking into, for instance, treating various cancers, parkinsons disease, chronic pain. Basically, any application any application where you want to very locally and precisely deliver it where it is needed. It is early days, but they hope to be testing in humans within five years. 25 minutes past ten is the time. Notre dame will not hold a Christmas Mass for the first time in more than 200 years. Millions of Brussel Sprouts will be eaten across britain over the next few days, with supermarkets expecting a 500 increase in sales. The bitter tasting vegetable often divides opinion, but new varieties are being grown to try to win skeptics round. Sam fenwick reports. As you tuck into your christmas dinner, it is likely that the sprouts on your plate will have been grown here, in the scottish borders. They are planted in rows and the cold north sea winds make for ideal growing conditions. It has been a very good harvest, we have had a very good growing season. The sprouts are looking really healthy. They are standing up, looking really good. Sprouts are really good for you. They have four times more vitamins c than an orange, but they are not always everyones favourite vegetable. I dont like sprouts because theyjust make me go eugh i think sprouts are tasty. I have never tried sprouts. No. Not my thing. Nope. But there is Something Special going on in the scottish fields that might change your opinion of the humble sprout. This variety of sprouts has the compound glucosamine being altered in it. It is more of a sweeter tasting sprout. These wont have the bitterness that people associate with sprouts. Sales of sprouts increase by 500 at christmas. Tesco alone will sell 90 million of them. And how many sprouts do you peel a day . 40 baskets, which is about half a tonne a day. Yeah. That is a lot. Yeah, it is a lot. Now, i am one of those people that doesnt really like sprouts. I will maybe have three on my plate on my christmas dinner. I will move them around and maybe try to hide them under a piece of turkey. But i am told that it is because i am perhaps not cooking them properly. Ian is here. He is our expert at growing sprouts and cooking them. So what am i doing wrong . I think youre cooking them too long. You mean putting them on the boil in october is too soon . It is. It is the last thing you should cook before you put your plate together for your christmas dinner. Really . Yes, they only take a few minutes and they stay lovely and green, and they taste really nice. Just boil them for three minutes, and that is them ready now. Here we go, can i take a little one . Yes, you can. Its hot, mind. Its very hot they taste very green. Correct. So this christmas, maybe it is time we gave sprouts a second chance.
