The australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has acknowledged public anger at his decision to go on holiday while his country faces a bushfire crisis. On holiday while his country mr morrison said if he could go back, he would have made a different choice. The fires are expected to worsen, with more hot, dry weather expected. Mr morrison did acknowledge the role of Climate Change, it but said warming temperatures couldnt be connected to any single fire. Gareth barlow reports. This is the remarkable, almost apocalyptic scene facing firefighters tackling australias deadly and devastating wildfires. Fire chiefs described saturday as an awful day. As thousands of personnel tackle raging infernos, the countrys Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has been heavily criticised for being on holiday in hawaii, but the pm has cut short his trip to return home. I get it that people would have been upset to know that i was holidaying with my family while their families were under great stress. They know that i am not going to stand there and hold a hose, iam not a trained firefighter. Im conforted by the fact that australians would like me to be here, just simply so i can be here. An area the size of belgium has been torched by the fires. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and at least ten people killed. Scores of blazes continue to grip the country. This is certainly taking its toll, and so too is the spread of the activity across the country. In september, most of that effort was really concentrated in new south wales, but now the fires are spreading from the Queensland Border down to the south coast of new south wales. This week has seen record high temperatures repeatedly broken. Scott morrison . Government has long defended the use of fossil skills, and have been increasingly criticised for this, by people who have linked the fires to Climate Change. They have said the government would take action on Climate Change. There is no argument, in my view and the cabinets view, and any government in this country, about the links between broader issues of Global Climate change and events around the world in weather. But i am sure that people would equally acknowledge that the direct connection to any single fire event, it is not a credible suggestion to make that link. So we must take action on Climate Change. We are taking action on Climate Change. Arson, lightning strikes, even self combusting piles of manure, have been blamed for triggering the blazes. First though, the authorities have to try and take control of the flames before they can try and control the causes to prevent future fires. Gareth barlow, bbc news. Our correspondent shiamaa khalil is in balmoral one of the worst hit places in new south wales. Im just going to try and make my way to one of the houses over there. You have to watch every step you take. I mean, there is still smoke coming out of tree trunks, still smouldering. Watch it and itjust gets you right in the throat, very hard to breathe. We also have to be very careful about the trees around us. Some of them have been completely burnt out. They are still standing, but they could fall any time. Look over there. Look at that. Look at that smoke, and just beyond it, look at that devastation. Nothing has escaped those fires. Nothing escaped the flames. And the destruction is absolute. You can see why firefighters are saying it is too dangerous for people to come back to these areas. This house has been completely destroyed. I mean, you can see the remains of what used to be a kitchen, cars completely out, but really, what they are afraid of now is those trees. The fact that these trees have been completely burned, and some of them have fallen off. That is the danger now, and that is why people arent allowed back to those areas. Joining me now from sydney is Chloe Rafferty from uni students for Climate Change, who also marched in yesterdays rally across the Sydney Harbour bridge to the Prime Ministers residence. Thank you for being with us. Why did you take part in that march . Well, the breathtaking arrogance at our Prime Minister, who fled the country while australia is facing Climate Change driven chaos really demands mass action. Australia is one of the worst criminals when it comes to the export of fossil fuels. We are to call it what saudi arabia is to oil. It isa call it what saudi arabia is to oil. It is a big exporter, so people are angry at the Prime Ministers betrayal. Running off to hawaii and refusing to acknowledge the link between Climate Change and the fires we are experiencing, and people demanding action on Climate Change and to end fossil fuel emissions. And you are in no doubt that these horrific fires are linked to Climate Change . Absolutely. And as one of the Firefighter Union chiefs said yesterday, there is no Climate Change deniers at the end of a hose. Anyone who has seen these mega fires, anyone who has had the u nfortu nate fires, anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of having to fight these fires. This is unlike anyone anything anyone has ever seen. The word unprecedented is getting thrown around. We know that this is not the usual cycle of an australias fires, this is the effects of Climate Change. So what would you like Scott Morrison, the Prime Minister, and the government to do what it isnt doing now . For a start, the fire is being fought by the largest Firefighter Team in the world. It is a disgrace. We need to pay people who are doing this. We have had tales of volunteer firefighters crowdfunding their breathing apparatuses. We dont know the long term effects of people breathing in this thy smoke for months, so we need to fund Fire Services properly. We need to have paid professionalfirefighting services, and we need to take action against the fossil fuel industry, thatis against the fossil fuel industry, that is causing these omissions and dragging these mega places. The first thing to do is transition away from fossil fuels, both first thing to do is transition away from fossilfuels, both in our first thing to do is transition away from fossil fuels, both in our own coal fire systems in australia, betting experts as well. Scott morrison, the pan in a state you are so morrison, the pan in a state you are so critical of, he has admitted that Climate Change has played a role in these fires, but he says many other issues are also factors. Lightning strikes, arson and so on. He is pretty two faced strikes, arson and so on. He is pretty two fa ced really. Strikes, arson and so on. He is pretty two faced really. This is a man who literally brings lumps of coal into parliament, who celebrates the coal industry, who brings them into parliament for show and tell. And he is going to be on tour in india soon promoting the export of australian coal, so i think we have reached the point at which people cannot be out right Climate Change deniers any longer. But Scott Morrison is the closest we can get toa morrison is the closest we can get to a Climate Change denier. The fact that there is a massive expansion of foss of your projects, the drilling thatis foss of your projects, the drilling that is going on in australia, and on top of that, he is expecting these mega places to be fought by an army of volunteers, instead of government funded professional firefighters, which we need a massive expansion of. Tesco has suspended production at a factory in china, following allegations forced prison labour was used to pack Charity Christmas cards. It comes after the sunday times reported a six Year Old Girl from south london found a message from shanghai prisoners hidden in a box of cards. Our correspondent greg mckenziejoins me now. It was a six Year Old Girl from south london, who had brought this one box of Christmas Cards. She was setting about writing to her friends and family in them, when she is reported to have discovered that one of the Christmas Cards had already been written in and Block Capital letters. The message simply read, we are foreign prisoners in shanghai, for to work against our will. Please help us notify human rights organisations. The message went on to say that they need help wanted the message to go out there. So this is being reported by the sunday times, it is there to page this morning. Obviously, a big surprise for a six year old to see this message. They then contacted the newspaper, who are running the story today. Tescos have immediately put out a statement, saying it has halted production at a factory in china, which is alleged to have used forced labour to have made these Christmas Cards. Tesco say they are shocked by these allegations, and will delist the company that prints the cards, which is actually based in china, if they are deemed to have done any wrong doing here. It is not the first time that allegations of forced labour have surfaced from this place in shanghai. In early 2013, there were allegations that two Close Companies use to this business to make closed in shanghai. So obviously, tesco said, look, we donate more than £300,000 per year from the sale of our Christmas Cards to the british heart foundation, Cancer Research uk and diabetes uk, so we are Cancer Research uk and diabetes uk, so we are investigating. Thank you. We will be talking to the journalist wrote that story a bit later. 88 flood warnings remain in place across the south, the midlands, and the east of england, and 1 other in wales following another night of heavy rain. Yesterday a tornado swept through parts of surrey, damaging cars and houses and ripping up trees. This report from james ohara. This is what days of relentless rain falling on to already saturated ground looks like. More than 100 mobile homes had to be evacuated at a caravan park in yalding in kent. Residents are unlikely to be able to return home for several days. In pulborough in west sussex, the sand bags are being put to the test. As the river rises, these vehicles didnt stand a chance. We have got more rain on sunday, and more rain on monday as well, so it is not going to get any better. I think the key thing here is it is not going to get to the severe situation, where we have got a significant number of properties. It is going to remain high until christmas, but after that we have got a dry period, so hopefully things will come down then. But this was the sight that greeted motorists near the m25 near chertsey in surrey. A tornado sucking up things from the ground and throwing them around. It left a trail of damage to these houses. Residents say they couldnt believe what they were seeing. With christmas approaching, millions of people will be taking to the roads in the coming days. They are set to endure what police are calling miserable driving conditions, hoping theirjourneys dont end like this. James ohara, bbc news. Heavy rains and floods have seen roads and airports closed on the mediterranean island of corsica. Ferry services to mainland france have been suspended. Residents in some areas have been evacuated from their homes. In the french alpes, firefighters have been called in to tackle landslides. These buses were stuck after tonnes of earth blocked the road. Some buildings have been washed away. Residents of the area say the flooding is the worst theyve ever seen. The parents of harry dunn are to meet with the home secretary, priti patel, as the government considers whether to begin extradition proceedings against an American Woman accused of their sons death. Anne sacoolas is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, following a crash in northamptonshire in august. Mrs sacoolas left for the us, following the incident, claiming diplomatic immunity. Her lawyers said she would not return to the uk to face a potentialjail sentence for a terrible but unintentional accident. The duke of edinburgh has spent a second night in a Central London hospital. Prince philip, whos 98, is being treated for a pre existing condition on the advice of his personal doctors. Our correspondent simonjones sent this update from outside the king edward vii hospital. Well, theres been no official update overnight from the palace. In fa ct, update overnight from the palace. In fact, we havent heard anything from them formally since friday, when Prince Philip was admitted to hospital. I think it is worth reiterating what they said back then. They stressed that the decision to bring him here was precautionary on the advice of his doctor. I dont think we can read too much into the fact we are not getting regular updates on the palace because in previous years when Prince Philip has been in hospital, we have had very little from then until the point when he is ready to be released from hospital. They are still not saying what he is being treated falls. We know that in the past he has had an operation on his hip. He has also had a stent fitted to deal with a blocked artery. The reason there is some concern is because he is obviously 19 years old. We have seen very little of him in public over the last couple of years. He retired from official royal duties. He used to carry out over 300 royal duties a year, but now he has rarely seen in public. At the start of the year, he did of course have a nasty car accident, they emerged from that unscathed. He was seen at a wedding in windsor back in may, but few sightings since then. But overall, the palace are optimistic that he may be well enough to be released in time for christmas to travel back to sandringham tojoin time for christmas to travel back to sandringham to join the queen, although he did miss six celebrations back in 2011 because he was in hospital having an operation missed celebrations. While many of us might complain about watching old films and tv shows at christmas, people with dementia can benefit from re watching the classics. Research by nhs england suggests it can stimulate memories and help keep the brain active. Here are some classic tv moments. Bells ringing out from the old english spire. Grandmother pausing a while to admire grandfather resting his nuts by the fire. Both a great Christmas Card to view. Weve only got a couple of minutes. Were the first turn. Mr lucas youre forgetting the fairy dust. Fancy spending as much as this. Well, it is christmas, aint it i dont know what to say. That has never stopped me. I mean, im overwhelmed, sort of all confused, i mean, you get a surprise like this and you cant help thinking, maybe hes nicked them. Father christmas has been down that chimney a long time. It is not his fault. He gives the presents away, and then they give him a drink. Oh, i see, yeah. A piece of cake, by three oclock he is paralytic. He does not need cake. Its a Merry Christmas from me and a happy new earfrom him. Good night. Some great christmas tv moments. Professor Alistair Burns is the nhs englands director for dementia, hejoins me now from salford. Thank you very much for being with us. Thank you very much for being with us. How can these old tv clips and movies help people with dementia . I think it is true that people with dementia can feel quite isolated, particularly at christmas time, when there is lots happening. The advantage of it listening to, whether it is an old song, a tv series or an old film, is that it can bring back memories, but importantly, it allows people to connect with their families, so that they can talk about a shared experience. Are you saying that christmas can be quite a difficult time for people with dementia . M can bea time for people with dementia . M can be a challenging time, there is lots happening. There are visits, lots happening. There are visits, lots going on, but by listening to old songs and watching old films and taking things, if you like, a bit more casually and a bit more pace, it can be a very enjoyable time for people. There are specific things as well that can be done to make sure that people with dementia and memory problems can enjoy it. What is the advice to families with people suffering from dementia at christmas . What should they be doing . I think the important thing to remember is that everybody is an individual. So it is not a case of one size fits all. I think the most important thing is to make sure perhaps, when you are setting up the decorations, dont do it all at once, do it in stages and make sure someone once, do it in stages and make sure someone is involved, take a bit more time. If there are lots of family visits, instead of everyone coming at once, they could be spread over a little while. Another thing that is important is, for many people, having a christmas dinner and a huge plate of food is a good thing. But for someone, an older person, where perhaps their appetite isnt as good as it might have been, that can be quite daunting. I suppose, as you are saying, christmas is a time when lots of people, often with families coming, visitors, relatives, it is quite a busy time with lots of presents being opened. So in a sense, these old films and tv shows can be quite soothing and peaceful for any anyone suffering from dementia . That is absolutely right, a person with dementia can have a challenge with this. But taking a bit of time, looking at a shared memory. We know that people with dementia, memories from some time ago tend to be better preserved, so there might be an emotional connection with a film clip or a series, and it can promote talking, it can promote people with dementia feeling involved. That has a very positive effect on peoples self esteem, and at this very special time of year, it allows people to be connected. Some very good advice there. Thank you very much, professor. About 1 of the population has some form of epilepsy, which would suggest more than 60 Million People worldwide. Yet for many, drugs dont work very well. Now a team of Cambridge University scientists has built a tiny Electronic Device that could eventually sit on the brain to work out when the patient is about to have a seizure and deliver a drug to stop it. Our science correspondent Richard Westcott reports. In a very, very clean room at Cambridge University, they are building a device that could one day transform treatment for epilepsy. So chris, i take it you are not dressing forfun, fun as it is . Yeah, no actually, for the electronics we are making, it is really important to be in an ultra environment. No dust, nothing in here . No no dust, nothing in here. It will sit on the brain and deliver a drug a seizure is coming. So it feels a bit counterintuitive to have a device in your brain. How do you stop it kind of being rejected . So actually, the device works very similarly to cells in the brain. It can sense what other nearby cells are doing, and then no exactly when to release chemicals to tell the other selves what to do. It is exactly having your own is in the brain work. One of the biggest obstacles to treating epilepsy and other Brain Disorders is getting the drug to where it is needed. A thing called the blood brain barrier stops many drugs getting through. This device could bypass that problem. So the benefit of having a small device directly in the brain is we only deliver drugs where they are needed, so you mitigate side effects. And because they are going exactly where they are needed, they are highly effective. So we have found a very small amount of the drug can go a very long way, if it is delivered in the right location. The only part of the device that actually goes into the brain is this tiny needle here that is the width of two human hairs. And if you look at it under the microscope, this red patch here is the drug that is delivered when you need it. And how does it know when you need it . When someone is about to have an epileptic seizure, the electrical activity in the brain changes, and sensors on the device pick that up. So there are many potential advocations of this technology where we combine the ability to sense with the ability to locally deliver the drug. Other applications we have been looking into, for instance, treating various cancers, parkinsons disease, chronic pain. Basically, any application any application where you want to very locally and precisely deliver it where it is needed. It is early days, but they hope to be testing in humans within five years. A nativity scene by banksy has appeared at a hotel in bethlehem in the west bank.
