As a serious Political Force if it tries to whitewash the scale of its election defeat. Jailed for life Ayoub Majdouline sentenced to a minimum of 21 years for the gang murder of 14 year old jaden moodie. I know who you are, i know the rest of your story. And coming up, the rise of skywalker stars hit the red carpet on the release of the new star wars movie. Its five oclock our top story more than 15,000 nurses have gone on strike in Northern Ireland in a dispute about pay and patient safety. About two thirds of them are members of the Royal College of nursing which is taking strike action for the first time in its 103 year history. Theyre unhappy about being paid less than colleagues elsewhere in the uk. Many appointments and treatments have been cancelled because of the strike and a number of minor injury units are closed. Chris page reports. Horns toot. Support for the strikers taking part in a picket unlike any before. The Royal College of nursing has existed for 103 years, this is the first time its members have walked out of work. It is a very sad day for nursing and all our colleagues that it had to come to this. This goes against the grain for all nurses. The main thing is definitely patient safety. When we go to wards we see a staffing deficit and it is actually very concerning for all of us. More than 15,000 nurses are on strike but many other Health Care Professionals are taking part in this industrial action, too, from paramedics to social workers to administrators. Their basic message is they want to be paid the same as nhs staff in the rest of the uk. There are more than 7000 vacancies across the Health Service in Northern Ireland. To fill the gap, more than £200 million has been spent on agency staff in the past year, that is less pressure on existing staff. In a survey, almost half said they felt unwell with a third thinking of leaving. Nurses say they cant provide the care they wa nt say they cant provide the care they want to. Our priority is patience and keeping them safe and at the minute id dont feel that i can keep patients safe all the time. I go to work sometimes and im thinking, how will i get through this day. This man who lost his daughter came to the picket line to offer his solidarity. Ive seen nurses do almost every task possible and to the work they do is unbelievable. Other departments have remained open but many points have been called off. Senior managements say they understand why employees have taken such a major step. They deserve to be paid the same amount as colleagues around the uk are being paid. 0ur as colleagues around the uk are being paid. Our staff as colleagues around the uk are being paid. 0urstaff are as colleagues around the uk are being paid. Our staff are doing the samejobs as being paid. Our staff are doing the same jobs as others in the being paid. Our staff are doing the samejobs as others in the uk being paid. Our staff are doing the same jobs as others in the uk so we absolutely have sympathy and we recognise and support their right to be paid appropriately. Strikes are happening as politicians at stormont. Health care reform to be left on the shelf because there have been no ministers in office. This is the front line. It is a christmas of crisis in hospitals here. Chris page has been following the story we can speak to him now from belfast. Give us an idea of the level of disruption the strike has caused. The current number of outpatient appointments that have been cancelled stands at around 5000 so there is no doubt that there has been a significant level of disruption to the Health Service as you had in my report there. Services that are deemed critical, the likes of Cancer Treatment for example, those services are continuing. Workers in those areas have been given an exemption from striking. Strikers are pretty confident that in spite of the levels of disruption, the public is right behind them and certainly the levels of support that was being expressed towards strike at on picket lines that seem to bear that out. What is noticeable is that Health Care Managers are far from saying this is too extreme, they are saying they have sympathy with the workers, that they do deserve to be paid the same level as their counterparts in england, scotland and wales and really, whenever you think about the reaction that you might expect from senior managers in a big strike situation, that is quite remarkable. We saw how the paralysis at stormont is one of the causes of this. To what extent does this strike action put pressure on political leaders to get stormont back and up and running . I think it has put considerable pressure on local politicians. There is a fresh round of negotiations going on at the moment which started on monday aimed at getting the devolved government back. It collapsed almost three yea rs back. It collapsed almost three years ago and over the course of the general Election Campaign the issue of health care in particular was a write up the agenda as well as the industrial action by Health Care Professionals which has culminated in the strike today put up your sad figures published which underlined the state of crisis in the nhs here for example, a population of 1. 8 million, what then 1000. If you compare that figure to the whole of england, there there are just more than 1000 people have been waiting on and yes that is just a sign of how far behind Northern Ireland is when it comes to that very important issue of hospital waiting times and certainly there is a sense that perhaps, in terms of the pressure on Public Services that has been caused by the absence of ministers, perhaps things have reached a Tipping Point and it could concentrate political minds all the more to try and get a deal. The legal deadline for those talks is the 13th of january. Deal. The legal deadline for those talks is the 13th of january. Many thanks. Lets speak now to karen bowes who has been on the picket line today outside the ulster hospital in belfast, shes a Community Nurse and has been in nursing for 25 years. 25 years as a nurse, why did you decide to go on strike . 25 years as a nurse, why did you decide to go on strike . I really dont think we had much option. We needed our voice to be heard and this was the only way that we could do that. The only way, some people will say, this has led to what 5000 odd appointments being cancelled. There are already horrific waiting lists, this is just there are already horrific waiting lists, this isjust compounding there are already horrific waiting lists, this is just compounding the misery of those patients who have already had to wait a very long time for those appointments that have now been cancelled 7 for those appointments that have now been cancelled . I was strike action is on safe staffing and what we would say is that every day when we would say is that every day when we would go into our wards and communities, our patients arent safe. Every day there are waiting times andi safe. Every day there are waiting times and i had your reporter saying there are 100,000 people waiting for a First Contact appointment and i have been appointments mists today but that is a day to day occurrence here in Northern Ireland. What you think is the root cause of it. We are talking about the political paralysis at stormont, is that one of the underlying causes of the problem . I think it is definitely. Funding for nurses was frozen many yea rs funding for nurses was frozen many years ago. The number of nurses training here in Northern Ireland was reduced about ten years and its started to pick up now but it takes three years for those nurses to be trained so that is part of the issue. The retention of nurses is a huge issue here. Why would a nurse have her degree, train and say Northern Ireland when she can go in scotla nd Northern Ireland when she can go in scotland or wales and be paid up to £3000 more a year . I think it is an accumulation of quite a few things. It isa accumulation of quite a few things. It is a huge step for a nurse to go on strike. We know that the royal couege on strike. We know that the Royal College of nursing havent had a strike for more than one century. We have never had a strike in the royal couege have never had a strike in the Royal College of nursing in the 103 year history. I really need to emphasise, we didnt take this lightly. Every nurse searched her heart and we agonised over this decision but ultimately we have to advocate for the patients, we had to step forward and we had to say that this needs to end. We need to change. Are you prepared to continue strike action, to carry out more strike action . We have given notice to the hse here in Northern Ireland up to and including march 2020. That is not something that we want to do and we are hoping that we want to do and we are hoping that our assembly here in Northern Ireland will come up with a solution but we have started this and we need to see it through. You think you can win this battle . We are very hopeful. There were some talks of the week before last and some further funds were made available andi further funds were made available and i think what really needs to happen is that stormont need to listen to the public need to listen to the citizens of Northern Ireland and give back to the assembly and try and sort out issues that we have here in health and social care and also within education. Good to talk to you, thank you very much indeed for being with us. Members of the us house of representatives will vote later tonight on whether to impeach President Trump and send him for trial in the senate. Hes accused of pressuring ukraine for personal gain and obstructing the impeachment process. Mr trump has made his thoughts clear about the process. In a six page open letter he accused the democratic speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, and her party of an illegal, partisan attempted coup. He says hes the victim of an open war on democracy and claims the charges he faces are completely disingenuous, meritless, and a baseless invention of your imagination. He also claims the impeachment process, which is set out under the us constitution, is nothing more than an illegal, partisan attempted coup that will, based on recent sentiment, badly fail at the voting booth. If convicted by the senate, the president would be removed from office, but thats never happened in us history. We can cross over live now to capitol hill in washington and listen in to the debate in the house of pelosi is on herfeet. The president again violated the constitution. It is a matter of fact that the president is again an ongoing threat to our National Security and the testimony of war heroes, distinguished diplomats and career public servants, some of the president s own appointees have told us president s own appointees have told us this. The president used the power of his Public Office to attain an improper personal benefit at the expense of americas National Security. When a president we can is a democratic ally that is. By fighting an american adversary, the president weakens america. This abuse of power also jeopardises the integrity of our elections. All americans agree that American Voters should choose our president , not some foreign government. The founders understood that it is profoundly corrosive for our democracy for a president to invite interference in our elections. As george washington, our nations patriarch, under his gaze we stand today, history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most painful foes of republican government. George washington. Sadly, the American People have witnessed a further rungs of the president which necessitate the second article of impeachment, obstruction of congress. Further wrongs. When his wrongdoing was revealed, he launched an unprecedented, indiscriminate and categorical campaign of defiance and obstruction. Never before in the history of our nation have we seen a president declare and act as if he is above the law. The present goes even so far as to say and act on this 70 even so far as to say and act on this 70 observed that he when he says that article two says i can do whatever i want. Recklessness is a profound violation of the constitution and our republic which enjoys because of our system of separation of power. Each Check Balance on the other, a republic again. If we can keep it. That is nancy pelosi, summarising the charges against the president saying that it charges against the president saying thatitis charges against the president saying that it is an established fact that he violated the constitution and saying that he gave lawmakers no choice but to pursue impeachment. 0ur correspondent nada tawfik is in washington. Talk us through the process today. The house convened this is going to bea the house convened this is going to be a very long day of debates leading up ultimately tonight to that Impeachment Vote on both articles of impeachment and what we had this morning so far was a bit of housekeeping, a vote on the rules of procedure, laying the way for how this will all play out. We also had the actual articles themselves read out on the house floor and now we are hearing from the democratic leader, the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi and she has really stayed on message throughout this speech on the house floor saying that no member of congress that comes wanting to impeach a president but that President Trump had left them no choice. But theyre putting out a very solemn attitude saying that this is not something that all the democrats wanted, really hitting back at the republican narrative that it back at the republican narrative thatitis back at the republican narrative that it is only happening because the democrats are unhappy with the results of the 2016 election and she is saying here in the speech that nothing short of the integrity of the future elections and National Security is at stake. She is inviting we are going to finish hearing from the speaker, nancy pelosi and then someone from the Judiciary Committee will give an Opening Statement from republicans and then we will go right into that very long six plus hour debate where each side will get equal time to talk about how they plan to vote when it comes to impeachment. The bigger picture, what are the chances of the democrats actually impeaching President Trump . All but certain. The democrats at this point have had enough members come out publicly to support impeachment, to be sure that President Trump will become at the third president in history to be impeached by the house of representatives. From the republican side, theyre all inbox temp with in box step with the white house. On a democrats aside, they are also voting along party lines. There are two democrats who plan to oppose impeachment that many moderate democrats who won district trump held in 2016, they know this will cost as. But we have to do what is right, we took an oath to the constitution and they agree with their party that the president needs to be held accountable so, as we go through this debate today, as we get to the boat, i would say there is very little suspense, everybody expects the outcome here but it is still a very significant day as the house gets ready to impeach donald trump and send those articles of impeachment to the senate where a trial in january impeachment to the senate where a trial injanuary is likely to acquit him because the republicans control of the senate. Thank you. Tony blair has delivered a scathing verdict on labours performance in the general election, and urged moderates in the party to take back control from the far left. In a speech in london, the former Prime Minister warned that the party had to change course, or it might never win power again. His intervention comes as candidates to be the next labour leader begin to outline their vision for the future. Nick eardley reports. Just wondering whether we are going to be able to count on your vote . What went wrong, and how does labour rebuild after its worst election result in 80 years . There is a lot of soul searching going on in the party. Dont vote for a slogan, vote for a policy. The last man to win an election as labour leader says a big rethink is needed. Labour can keep with the programme and positions ofJeremy Corbyn with a new leader, in which case its finished. Or it can understand that it must recapture the party from the far left, make radical changes and begin the march back to power. Labour has changed since the blair era the membership is more left wing, many policies are more radical, and as candidates to replace corbyn emerge, many are reluctant to change things too much. I think that Jeremy Corbyn was right in 2015 when he said we should be an anti austerity party, we should be against cuts to public spending. That was a fundamentally important shift in our party, and what im concerned about in the aftermath of this election is that we oversteer and lurch to a different position without recognising what an important shift that was. But can another mp representing a north london seat help labour reconnect with the north of england . Sir keir isJeremy Corbyns constituency neighbour, and so is the other candidate out of the traps. Emily thornberry launched her bid criticising mr corbyn for backing an election and says shes ready to take on borisjohnson. She wrote in the guardian, when the next election comes, i would like labour to have a leader and team in place a Strategic Vision to exploitjohnsons failings. Labours leadership race wont formally get under way until the new year, but already there is a slow stream of prospective candidates setting out what they think went wrong. The biggest question of the contest is going to be whether mr corbyns approach needs a few tweaks or wholesale change. Leadership hopefuls will have to persuade a left wing membership and unions of their merits, and many of mr corbyns allies are preparing to back their own candidate. I think its good there are candidates from the different political strands within the party putting their name forward. My preference is for rebecca long bailey, but i think its welcome that the members are going to have a real choice. After rejection from the electorate, the battle for labours future is under way. 0ur Political Correspondent helen catt is in westminster. What do you think is the significance of tony blairs intervention given that he is not perhaps universally loved within the labour party . Yes, and how he has not exactly stayed silent on his criticism of the parties leadership and its stance on brexit. Having said that, this was a pretty blistering attack. He described the ma nifesto blistering attack. He described the manifesto as 100 page wish list that had fooled nobody. He said his concern for the future was that the only people speaking the language of reality while those who didnt aspire to lead the party. Tony blair does know a thing or two about winning elections, notjust holding those at northern heartlands and real labour heartlands but also picking up seats, the sort of one that are seen as must wins for labour on that are seen as must wins for labourona that are seen as must wins for labour on a path to power, places like swindon or towns in kent. As you say, he is still a divisive figure, particularly amongst Labour Party Members and perhaps recognising that when he was asked who he thought it should be the next leader he said it was unwise to answer. Where are we with runners and riders . Emily thornbury is the only person to have explicitly said that i hope to be in that contest in the new year. There is another box of people who are what we are calling the seriously considering running so you had said keir starmer who is one of them, Lisette Nandy is another who says she is seriously considering a run for the leadership. Lisa nandi. We have others in the frame who have perceived to be positioning herself or other people pushing them forwards so we are looking at people like jess and also forwards so we are looking at people likejess and also within that box you have got others, rebecca long bailey who you had about and she is the favourite candidate, or seemed to be. She is the mp for salford and eccles and we are waiting to see if she put herself forward. The contest doesnt kick off formally until january so there will be a lot of mps are getting a lot of christmas cards over the Festive Season as they look for support. Thank you very much indeed. Relatives of four british soldiers who died in the 1982 hyde park bombing have won their civil case against the convicted ira member, john downey. The families are seeking damages, after a criminal case against him collapsed. The judge at the High Court Said today she was satisfied john downey was an active participant in the attack. Sangita myska reports. Walking out of the high court, the families of the victims of the hyde park bombing say this has been a fight that has lasted more than three decades. The families here today were told they would never getjustice, that they should put the past behind them and move on. They, and thousands whose lives were devastated by the ira, are the forgotten victims. She found it very hard, she could not move on because of how it affected her and no one listening to her. She was a young child and she had so much anger and aggression about what was going on in her life. She found it very hard to adjust to things. She still finds it hard today after 37 years. She still finds it very hard to cope. Described in court as a cold blooded killing, it was on the 20th ofjuly when an ira car bomb was detonated in hyde park. Three other soldiers also died. John downey was the prime suspect. Convicted of ira membership in the 1970s, he was charged with the bombing in 2014. He denied any involvement. The criminal case collapsed against him. As part of the good friday agreement, john downey had been sent an on the run letter and given an assurance he would not face trial. The scheme was heavily criticised. Tony blair, whose government implemented the letters, fiercely defended them. Without having done that, we would not have a Northern IrelandPeace Process in place. The victims families didnt give up, winning legal aid last year to fund this civil action againstjohn downey. This they say is not a day for celebration. A feeling of sorrow. The judge gave that decision but nothing can bring those four boys back. We have worked tirelessly as a family to get that decision which the judge gave today. The relatives of those who brought that case. The cost of the loss is yet to be determined. A website for hotpoint and indesit customers to register washing machines that could be a fire risk has suffered technical problems but is now back up and running. At the same time, customers have been struggling to get through to the companys helpline. Around half a million appliances are being recalled, because their door locking system can overheat. 0ur personal finance correspondent, simon gompertz, is here. It has already been hugely embarrassing for the owners well pull and these problems with the phones and the website just add to the embarrassment, dont they . Yes, and customers have been a furious, frustrated. They were told 1pm yesterday that they might have a washing machine as one of the half a million that would be recalled, branded hotpoint or indesit and they could should go to a website and see if it was and shouldnt use it except at a very low temperature but they couldnt because at the website was down and it was only after more than 2a hours, so this afternoon, that they managed to get it up and running so a big embarrassment and i have just put it to jeff who is running so a big embarrassment and i have just put it tojeff who is the spokesman for well pull that this is a double disaster, it was a recall and then their website went down. It has been an unfortunate situation, it is not the way that any of us would want to start the week off, especially something so important during the holidays but it is such that we have done everything we can to resolve it, we have done everything we can to improve and im proud to say, these folks that worked so hard that we are up and running, and we believe strongly that we will be up and running through the balance of this week and next week and the week thereafter. That is the well pull spokesman saying it is an unfortunate situation which is a bit of an understatement. Where are we and what is going on with people who have these machines . It had been pretty vague elite vague and i managed to get out of them that the recall operation will formally start on the 9th of january which is recall operation will formally start on the 9th ofjanuary which is a thursday and that is if you have registered on their website then they will send you out the choice to have a repair or a replacement and then ina have a repair or a replacement and then in a few days after that they will start doing that. Still uncertain when that will happen. It could be weeks or months before you get changed yours and in that time you will be hard put to get your washing done. In the meantime the advice is dont use your washing machine accept at a low temperature . They say unplug it but it is a low risk if you use it below 20 degrees. Simon, thank you very much indeed. Coming up. This is the star wars movie that wraps up storytelling from the first movie back in 1977. All the cast will be here and i will be speaking to the director. In the last hour the 19 year old Ayoub Majdouline has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 21 years for the gang murder of 14 year old jaden moodie in leyton in east london at the beginning of this year. 0ur correspondent richard glapin was at the old bailey when the sentence was handed down. We just wejust had we just had the sentencing, with the judge saying that this had to be a life sentence, because he had been convicted of murder. But saying that the life sentence would be with a minimum of 21 years. Thats potential should go down by about a year, when they take into account the amount of time which ayoub majdoulin had on remand. He also went on to say that ayoub majdoulin was one of five people who drove the car in north east london, back in january. Zaynab stays here with two otherfamilies. Asleep in the floor, in wet floor, with a lot of pain, when a pregnant woman needs a comfortable place. You dont know if you are safe or not. When they are fighting here, you dont have any police to stop them, maybe they attack us. The vast majority of people coming to lesbos are fleeing countries of conflict, such as afghanistan, syria and iraq. At the nearby women and childrens clinic, medics are overwhelmed.
