This report from our Political EditorLaura Kuenssberg contains some flashing images. Cheering the early hours of friday. Boris footage captured by a staffer at tory hq, scarcely believing the win. How many more hospitals . 40 and how many nurses are being recruited . 50,000 an early start today. Work to do. The tories now have an mp for every day of the year, plenty from seats that have never before turned blue. This is the start of an enormous opportunity to do some real good for residents of the north east. Its a lot of pressure. It is a bit daunting but we are excited to get in there and get started. Got goose bumps. The hairs on the back of your neck are standing up as you walk across westminster bridge. The last time you remember this sort of thing is the first day at big school. And here we go. The tories blasted through the election. 109 new conservatives arriving to these hallowed halls. A huge change for the party, after years when number ten couldnt rely on much. Have you got a newjob, sir . I hope not. A huge majority that is ballast for the Prime Minister and his cabinet to act with comparatively little standing in their way. God bless the Prime Minister. Thank you. You dont need divine guidance to work out that everything will take a back seat to getting out of the eu at the end of next month. Only tweaks to the cabinet tonight. Nicky morgan stays at culture, from a new perch in the lords. Simon hartjoins the cabinet for the first time, as a secretary of state for wales. As secretary of state for wales. Im amazed and delighted, yeah. I really am, actually. Should you stand aside for an interim leader . How the tories fare depends partly on who replaces him. Is it time to go . Wonderful to see you all. Goodbye. Corbyn has promised to go, but not yet. Labour faces notjust the choice of who to pick next. This is a moment for reflection. We are talking to lots of colleagues. The competition doesnt open until early next year. But whether to try genuinely to talk about what went wrong. Jeremy corbyns weak and incompetent leadership, the decision to back a second referendum, which alienated millions in our leave voting seats and a manifesto which read more like a christmas wishlist. Or turn on each other. One of the possible contenders for the top job, planning to sue another labour mp for alleging that she called leave voters stupid. People can slag me off. So long as its true, ill take it on the chin, but they cannot make bleep up about me, and if they do i have to take it to the courts. The lib dems are feeling the cost of the election, not a huge new tribe, a smaller family snap today. But the tories are not the only winners. The snp is back in bigger numbers. This is a very Different Parliament with a very differentjob. Until the end of next month, borisjohnsons priority, above all else, is to take us out of the European Union and stick to his promised departure date. But after that, a major reboot of what happens around here is in the offing. Brexit might only be the overture to a very different age. We must repay the trust of the electorate. That is what we are going to do. This is the crowd of new, loyal troops behind him. Mps from all over the country, not just the traditional tory shires. Cock a hoop at making it this far. Say oven ready oven ready confident tonight, at least, they have years in hand. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, westminster. The Prime Minister has insisted that he will govern for the whole of the United Kingdom and that he will earn the trust of those former labour voters who helped deliver his majority. Our special correspondent ed thomas has been to the traditionally labour town of burnley in lancashire, which elected a conservative mp last thursday. Burnley. Just one of the many northern towns to turn from red to blue, and all facing the same issues. Poverty, low wages and the struggle to find a place to call home. Takejordan and antony, desperate for someone to fix their lives. Both in work, on zero hour contracts, living in a bedsit. Is that your number one priority, housing, mixed with jobs . Employment, housing, yeah. Permanent employment. Permanent employment, yeah. Not zero hour contracts and stuff like that. Have you got hope that borisjohnsons conservatives can lift you guys out of this poverty . Absolutely, yeah. Youve got hope . Absolutely. There is a growing to do list, from the roads to the buses, and significantly, across the north of england, improving our railways. What needs to happen to make our trains better . On time, and enough carriages. Today, a new northern timetable. The predictable cancellations. The trains i used to get when i was a kid, im still getting them. Theyre rattley old things, with dubious bits of water floating on the floor, and rattley windows. Heating thats on in the summer and not necessarily on in the winter. Its pathetic, and a joke. The scale of the challenge to level up our transport network is revealed in the numbers. In london, spending per head is over £900, falling across the north with just £276 in yorkshire and the humber. Some one real change will take time. Our government can do it, but it wont happen in a five year time frame. It has to be part of a long term, systemic plan that is not london centric. That welcomes the regions into our national wealth. For some, the need is urgent. In parts of burnley, more than four out of ten children are growing up in poverty. This baby bank is helping more and more parents. Weve had a lot of families coming to us, very worried that things are going to get worse for them. Really . Yeah. Why, though . They dont have faith, because of everything they have been through over the last few years. After years of austerity, and underinvestment, the story of this town can be heard across the north of england, the midlands and wales, and the people, so long on the margins, expect to be listened to. Ed thomas, bbc news, burnley. New talks have taken place in Northern Ireland to try to restore the devolved government at stormont. Its nearly three years since power sharing collapsed, since power sharing collapsed because of disputes between sinn fein and the democratic unionists. Theres renewed pressure on the parties to get back into government with a crisis in the health service, strike action planned and patient waiting lists the worst in the uk. From belfast, heres our ireland correspondent emma va rdy. Winter at stormont, parties out in the cold. Each morning Civil Servants arrive to run the country. Its many moons since politicians took decisions here. Its a source of continuous pain. Johns one of thousands of patients in Northern Ireland now waiting years for routine operations. A lack of government has led to the slow decay of services. While the parties try to resolve their differences, he faces another year and a halfs wait for a hip replacement. I mean, to wait that long, and your lifes on hold. In the kind of pain youre in. Yeah, yeah. Its just on hold. You cant do anything. Theres too many people pointing the finger at each other. Theyjust need no get on. Theyjust need to get on. Today, calls for an Irish Language act. The main issue pretending sinn fein and the democratic unionists from governing together again. As ever, we enter into these negotiations in a spirit of optimism and determination. And now the big test is political will. I have listened very carefully during this election campaign, and right throughout the campaign there was a desire to get stormont back up and running again. Therefore, we are here to try and make that happen, i hope all the other parties will too. Since the dup lost its influence in westminster, theres new incentive to get back to power sharing here, but deeply held positions on both sides make compromise a difficult task. Both parties were punished in the general election for three years of stalemate. If theres no agreement in weeks they will Face Assembly elections, a path they may want to avoid. Emma vardy, bbc news, belfast. Violent protests have continued in major cities in india in opposition to a new citizenship law which many see as discriminating against the nations large muslim minority. Prime minister Narendra Modi has appealed for calm, but hes faced criticism for the law which offers amnesty to Illegal Migrants from three countries, as long as theyre not muslim. Todays protests came a day after police stormed a university in delhi, injuring at least 50 people. From the capital, our india correspondent Yogita Limaye sent this report. The library of one of indias top universities. On sunday night, it was the scene of a crackdown. Stu d e nts was the scene of a crackdown. Students tried to hide from the police. And shield themselves from the teargas in the air. In the mens bathroom, an injured student and another one who lay unconscious. Dozens of them were taken to the local hospital. They say they were beaten by the police for protesting against indias new citizenship law. This person has broken fingers on both hands. He was hit in the head and also on his back. When they caught us, they started beating us up, we caught us, they started beating us up, we were caught us, they started beating us up, we were begging for mercy. The police didnt stop at beating, says this man. He shows us where he was shocked. He says he was passing the area and got caught up in the violence. The policeman, he took out his service gun and shot me, he told us. His service gun and shot me, he told us. Two students are also reported to have bullet injuries. But a top policeman denies it. No, no, no, absolutely. It is not a peaceful protest, public transport was on fire. What started in this campus in this university in delhi has now spread far beyond it. Many believe that young people here who were trying to voice their dissent in a democracy work rushed by the state. And thats triggered a reaction across india. Today, people marched. In delhi, mumbai, kolkata, against what they see as a divisive law that disconnects against muslim migrants, an unprecedented show of dissent against the countrys hindu nationalist leadership, a precarious point for india. Yogita limaye aye, bbc news, delhi. Hundreds of former sub postmasters and postmistresses accused of stealing from the post office say theyve been vindicated, following a High Court Ruling that the Computer System they had to use was flawed. Last week the post office agreed to pay compensation of £58 million to more than 550 workers, many of whom lost their livelihoods or were even sent to prison. Our personalfinance correspondent Simon Gompertz was at the hearing in london. Relief, after 14 years trying to clear their names forjo and seema, who ran local post offices and were caught in a nightmare of prosecutions. Now, judgment has finally gone their way. Seema was jailed for four months while pregnant after the post office Computer System suggested funds had gone astray. She had to go to prenatal appointments in handcuffs. Jo found shortfalls of tens of thousands of pounds in her Village Post Office and pleaded guilty to false accounting to avoid a charge of theft. The whole family suffered. I couldnt work for the last ten years because of the conviction next to my name. I couldnt be in the room with my granddaughter at her school, because they knew i had a criminal record. I wasnt allowed to be left in the room on my own, which wasjust. That was the kind of thing. That is what you want to clear . That is what i want to clear, yes. It all came down to the post offices computer network, called horizon, which postmasters said did not work properly. Today, the judge criticised the it company fujitsu, which developed the system, saying he had a grave concerns about the veracity of evidence given by its employees. For the post office, chairman tim parker responded, enriching last weeks settlement, we accepted our pastor shortcomings and i. Accepted our pastor shortcomings and i, personally and on behalf of the post office, sincerely apologised to those affected when we got things wrong. Thejudge said those affected when we got things wrong. The judge said that the horizon it system which the sub postmaster is blamed for their problems was not remotely robust, and even in a revised version, it had a significant number of bugs. That is going to be hugely important for those that have been convicted and who want to overturn the convictions. There are 3a like seema andjo, now convictions. There are 3a like seema and jo, now waiting to have their convictions reviewed, claiming that their treatment has been a miscarriage of justice. Its a year since a ceasefire was signed by both sides in yemens devastating civil war. But its so far failed to end the conflict between houthi rebels, and the countrys government, which is backed by a saudi led coalition, in turn supported by allies including the us and the uk. Our correspondent nawal almagafi has travelled to the city of hajjah, where she met members of one family caught up in a deadly air strike on their village. In the chaos that followed, a mother was separated from her three year old daughter. Victims of yet another tragedy, in a country ripped apart by war. This entire hospital ward, busy treating one family. In another room, i meet the female survivors. Children, along with their parents and grandparents, all recovering from a series of air strikes. Miriam is seven months pregnant. She was clearing up breakfast that morning. This was the scene, just moments after the air strikes. A family gathering, ending in bloodshed. Miriams home in this remote village, completely flattened. And a desperate search for her three year daughter begins. As survivors are quickly taken to two different hospitals, its impossible to know who survived. The most critical are brought here, to the nearest city, five hours away. The doctors tell me there are six survivors. But they dont know if wad is one of them. As we look through the wards, we meet wads grandmother. So weak, she can barely speak. She tells me she saw two of her family killed in the air strike. But she isnt sure what happened to wad. To continue our search, we head to the site of the air strikes. Its still a scene of total devastation. Three days on, and afraid of another attack, the villagers still dont understand why the homes were targeted. As we talk, the villagers show me the remnants of the bombs they found. The markings are still clear. Like most attacks in yemen, an American Made paveway laser guided bomb. The villagers talk me through what happened that day, and tell me who survived. They are saying that wad is fine, and she is going to come here any minute now. But as we wait, we hear a noise in the sky. I can still hear the aeroplanes above us. We decided to leave. But for the people of the village, this is a constant threat that they cant escape. So, wads grandmother has brought her to the hospital, to finally see her mum. A rare cause for celebration, at a dark time. Despite all the loss, miriam, wads mother never lost hope. Ifeel like she has been reborn, her mother tells me. In this tragic war, a mothers instinct still prevailed against all odds. Nawal almaghafi, bbc news, yemen. In the past few minutes, boeing has announced it will halt production of its 737 max passenger plane in january. The airliner has been grounded since march after two fatal crashes in indonesia and ethiopia which killed more than 300 people. Boeing says it is unclear how long the production halt will last. The arsenal player mesut ozil has become embroiled in a row with china after he criticised the countrys treatment of ethnic uighur muslims and accused his fellow muslims of abandoning them. Chinas treatment of the uighur people has been widely condemned after evidence emerged suggesting more than a million had been detained in the region of xinjiang. China has insisted the detention camps are voluntary re education centres and that all the people in them have now been released. Following the footballers comments on social media, Chinese State television blocked a live broadcast of arsenals match yesterday. Arsenal have distanced themselves from ozils comments, saying the club doesnt get involved in politics. Our Sports Editor dan roan has the story. Arsenals premier league match against Manchester City, yesterday, was watched around the world. Except in china. Coverage of the game there cancelled, after comments by mesut ozil about the plight of fellow muslims in the country sparked what could prove a damaging dispute. In a social media post to his millions of followers, arsenals german midfielder criticised the treatment of chinas uigher population, referring to persecutors and details of an alleged crackdown. But if ozil, who was substituted during his teens 3 0 defeat at the emirates, thought he would have the backing of his club, he was mistaken. In a statement, arsenal distancing themselves from what they called their players personal opinion. As a football club, arsenal has always adhered to the principle of not involving itself in politics. Rights groups sayi million people, mostly from the uigher community, are thought to have been detained without trial in high security prison camps. The bbc was given rare access inside one of these facilities earlier this year. China has denied mistreatment, insisting these people are being educated in Vocational Training centres to combat extremism. Today, its government said ozil had been deceived by fake news. Translation we welcome mr ozil to visit xinjiang to look around. As long as he has a conscience, can tell right from wrong and hold objective and impartial principles, he will see a different xinjiang. Premier league clubs benefit from a record half a billion pounds tv rights deal with china. Arsenal are among those to have also gone on Pre Season Tours there, in pursuit of new fans and sponsors. Back in february, the club, sending a special new year message to their chinese supporters. We enjoyed our tour to china. Some fear the row could put revenue at risk. There is the very real threat of tv viewing audiences declining, of sponsorship contracts being reviewed. Of Fan Engagement generally, and the previous position of fans towards arsenal and english football, possibly suffering as a consequence of this. Arsenal will hope the dispute between the highest played player and most important overseas market will not escalate further. Sports uneasy relationship with politics, exposed yet again. Dan roan, bbc news. More on the days main news, the arrival of new mps at westminster. Our chief Political Correspondent vicki young reports on three of those new mps as they embark on their new careers. Wow, this is a rather big day. Its quite momentous. I think its one of those days youre never going to forget. I feel like ive got those butterflies in my stomach, but im doing this for the people of blyth valley, and i think we can really make a change. Ian levys victory was one of the stand out moments on election night. Taking the former mining constituency of blyth valley from labour confirmed it would be a stunning result for the conservatives. Now he has left hisjob in the nhs and is heading to parliament. And this is westminsters youngest mp, labours nadia witham, who isjust 23. Yeah, my family was terrified about it. Its a toxic climate for women in politics, particularly women of colour. I never thought a few months ago, when i was applying for minimum wage christmas temp jobs, that i wouldnt need those jobs because i would be an mp by christmas. It feels surreal, but im here to do a job. She has pledged to donate more than half of her mp salary to charity is in her constituency. Amy callaghans win for the snp grabbed the headlines because she defeated the liberal democrat leaderjo swinson. How do you feel about being an mp, coming down here for the first time today . It was obviously quite overwhelming at first, but ive had an incredibly interesting day. Ive already met with a school from a local constituency, and. So straight to work. Ive only been here for a couple of hours, so its a fantastic start. Its fairly daunting for a young woman in politics coming in, but im incredibly lucky ive got so much support from such a big group of snp mps coming down here. 155 new mps will be arriving here this week after the election. Women will make up 34 of the total number in the house of commons that is up slightly. But the big difference is that conservatives will now be representing some parts of the north east of england, wales and the West Midlands that havent been represented by the conservatives for generations. Parliaments not like most other offices. New mps have a lot of rules and traditions to get used to. But tonight, for conservative mps old and new, time to celebrate. Thats it. Now on bbc one, time for the news where you are. Have a very good night. Hello, and welcome to sportsday. Imjohn watson. Our headlines tonight. Why mezut ozil finds himself at the centre of a row with china that could have far reaching implications for his club and the premier league. Zaha strikes to rescue palace on roy hodgsons big night. A row between mezut ozil and china intensified after the forward criticised the countrys persecution of muslim minorities. Evidence suggests up to a million weegur muslims are being detained in high security camps in a region of the country their Foreign Ministry said today ozil was deceived by fake news. Chinese state tv pulled arsenals game with Manchester City yesterday as arsenal distanced themselves from ozils comments. China remains a highly lucrative market for both the premier league and the clubs who compete in it. Simon chadwick is a football finance expert. I think arsenal misread the situation, because when you do business in china, there is no middle ground. You are either with china or against china. By trying to position themselves somewhere between beijing and ozil, they were never going to limit that one. As far as theyre concerned now, its a case of hold your breath. If they wa nt to case of hold your breath. If they want to continue doing business in china, do lots of things that influence the market place positively, you represent yourself ina way positively, you represent yourself in a way that appeals to chinese fa ns in a way that appeals to chinese fans and then may be, may be, in the medium to long term, the damage will be repaired. Off the field, the search for a new manager continues. Arsenal held talks with former player mikel arteta, off the field, the search for a new manager continues. Arsenal held talks with former player mikel arteta, whos currently the assistant coach at Manchester City. Officials from arsenal were pictured leaving artetas house in the early hours of this morning. Hes one of the favourites to take overfrom Freddie Ljungberg whos in caretaker charge. Wilfried za ha rescued a point for Crystal Palace against rivals brighton in the premier league tonight. And that point takes palace above arsenal in the prmeier league. Brighton dominated most of the game, neal maupay with a brilliant opener to give them a deserved lead. Palace found their feet with around 20 minutes remaining. And not to be outdone, zaha scored a brilliant equaliser, and what a way to reward manager roy hodgson in what was his 100th game for the club. Place positively, you represent yourself in we have been playing so well as of late, third goal, i think in four games. We always knew he could do that, working very hard and trying to improve that side of things, shooting off a lot more now than perhaps he did at one stage in his career. He
