Hello and welcome to world news today. We begin with discord at the un Climate Summit in madrid, where negotiations have been extended because of serious disagreements between countries. The talks, which began two weeks ago, aim to find a formula for implementing a deal that was reached in paris back in 2015. The European Union and many small island states are pushing for more ambitious action from all countries but some of the biggest polluters, including the us, brazil and india, have objected. Heres a spokesperson for the summit outlining where things stand. From outlining where things stand. The comments from i this from the comments from the floor this morning, you can see there is a big array of concerns, and delegations ask for the introduction of new tags, but at the end of the day, there was a common denominator, the vast majority of delegations are asking for more ambitious text, and thatis asking for more ambitious text, and that is where we are aiming at. We need to strike a balance. It is impossible to have a consensus outcome if you do not compromise, so we expect that at the end of the day delegations will compromise on certain aspects and at the end of the day, we will be able to provide a tax that accommodates most of the concerns and then we can move forward. A text. The Climate Summit also saw arguments over Carbon Markets and compensation for poorer countries. Our environment correspondent matt mcgrath is at the summit in madrid. He gave us this analysis of the sticking points. Almost every country in the world signed the paris climate agreement in the french Capital Seven months ago. Countries were meant to update their plans on cutting carbon by the end of the year. All the countries have come to this particular cop conference in madrid to work out the wrinkles in the plan, the timetable, when they will submit their plans and to whom. They have run into major difficulties because a lot of the countries, the European Union and small island states and many others, feel that what is on the table is not ambitious enough. They feel the science is clear, the message from the streets is clear, countries need to be doing more and what they have seen written down, they are not happy about. Other countries like the united states, australia, india, japan and others, feel there is too much pressure on the plans at the moment and youre objecting to those. They have run into a stalemate. Another issue is they have also run into problems. There is a big question over Carbon Markets. Lots of countries including brazil want to bring forward carbon credits from the past and use them in the future. Lots of people feel that would devalue the idea of the market. There are issues over loss and damage, the idea of compensating small island states for the damages enjoyed by climate change. They are trying to agree a compromise on that. All the parties feel they are farapart ona that. All the parties feel they are far apart on a range of issues and many of them blame the chilean presidency. Chile is the country tasked with trying to bring everybody together. The meeting is not being held in chile, it is being held in madrid, because of civil u nrest held in madrid, because of civil unrest in that country and many feel that the chileans have not done a fantasticjob. That the chileans have not done a fantastic job. They still that the chileans have not done a fantasticjob. They still hope they can get some plans together and work ona can get some plans together and work on a compromise but if they do not, the worry the talks would end in failure, the conference might be suspended and have to be resumed at some point in the new year. Thanks very much. Talks continue at those un climate talks in madrid and well keep you up to date on all of the developments. And if you want to take a look at the background, then theres a special section devoted to cop25 on our website. Just log on to bbc. Com news. The former president of sudan, Omar Al Bashir, who was overthrown earlier this year, has been found guilty of corruption by a court in khartoum. The trial centred around millions of dollars found in his home. Mr bashir still faces other charges of human rights abuses during his time in power, as Ferdinand Omondi reports. It was a case that many sudanese followed with interest and which had Security Forces on high alert. Inside, the former president awaited the verdict on a Corruption Case involving 25 million he admitted he received but which he maintains was a gift. Some of his supporters felt the trial was political. Mr bashir was found guilty, but escaped the ten year jail sentence he faced on account of his age. The judge said, under sudanese law, people aged over 70 do not go to jail. Mr bashir is 75. It is a judgment many will see as lenient, but which his lawyer said he would still appeal against. Translation the matter is open in the Supreme Court and our trust in the law has not changed. Our trust in this court has changed completely because the entire verdict is not based on any facts but based on what has been happening on the streets, from rumours and lies. On the streets, hundreds of pro bashir protesters expressed their displeasure at the former president s current predicament. Mr bashir still faces a trialfor his role in the 1989 coup which brought him to power. Translation we are here today to send a message to the political opposition that has occupied the stage for the past period. We are here to tell them that the muslim brotherhood, the Islamist Movement and islamists in all forms are present. They are able to protect their ideas, ideologies and visions in all forms. Based on the facts and causes, it is clear that this is a political verdict and that the trial is essentially a political one because a person is convicted based on evidence, however, the verdict did not provide any evidence. It remains unclear if Omar Al Bashir will face charges at the International Criminal court. He is wanted for genocide in the darfur region where around 300,000 people were killed. Sudan may have deposed a dictator, but the path to justice is still long and uncertain. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. A british tourist was killed and his son was injured when they were shot during a suspected robbery outside an argentinian hotel. The two men were reportedly taken to hospital after the attack in buenos aires. A 50 year old man shot in the chest died, while his 28 year old son suffered a thigh injury. Southwest france has been hit by floods and gale force winds. Two men have been killed. One died when his car hit a fallen tree during the storms, and the other man was swept away by rising floodwaters. Five people have been injured, two seriously, when trees fell onto their vehicles. A group of women in tunisia have taken part in a flash mob protest movement condemning sexual violence. They wore symbolic blindfolds. Their demonstration is being seen as part of a Global Movement which started in chile and spread across south america, before being adopted in other continents. Protestors have also been taking to the streets of rome in protest against italys far right movements. They call themselves the sardines and they are particularly opposed to Matteo Salvinis la liga party. Until september, he was the italian interior minister, with what were seen by many as anti immigrant policies. Our correspondent mark lowen is at those protests. A month ago, this movement did not exist but within the last four weeks it has sprung up from a flash mob in northern italy to this, tens of thousands filling this square in rome, rising up against the far right party here, the league, led by matteo salvini, the former deputy Prime Minister. They call themselves the sardines because they have packed tightly into squares right across this country over the last four weeks. They are calling for respect for human rights, for welcoming migrants, a return to core values of democracy and they warn that the ghosts of italys fascist past are returning. We want to demonstrate that we are here and the other half of italy is here, and we are not agreeing with what has been done in the last year. I do not like salvini. Salvini, i think he represents a part of italians that did not wake up from fascism, and we are here to prove that some italians are. We are living in a black age here in italy, so i think my work here is to stand up for everyones right and this, i think, is everyones main purpose today. Looking out across the sea of sardines, what you do see are pictures of fish but what you do not see are political banners and flags because this movement wants to rise above traditional political parties, above italys divided and polarised political system. What they are trying to do is to stop salvini winning an important Regional Election in northern italy next month which if he were to triumph in, could spark National Elections which the polls say he could win. They believe the tide is turning against populism in this country and the sardines are riding it. Thanks very much. Mark lowen in rome. The uks Prime Minister, borisjohnson, has visited the north east of england to thank voters in a region traditionally loyal to the opposition labour party. Mrjohnson met supporters in sedgefield, the constituency once held by the former labour Prime Minister tony blair, but which returned a conservative party mp in this weeks elections. The labour leader, jeremy corbyn, is coming under increasing pressure to resign immediately after his party suffered its worst result since the 1930s. Our Political Correspondent iain watson reports. Good morning. A Prime Minister is a familiar sight in these parts, though its usually been a labour not a conservative one. So where better for borisjohnson to rub his opponents nose in the election result than in tony blairs old Stomping Ground of sedgefield 7 i know that people may have been breaking the voting habits of generations to vote for us. And i want the people of the north east to know that we in the conservative party, and i, will repay your trust. So what issues will he have to focus on if he is to retain the trust of new supporters . I hope he does a good job, hes going to get brexit done and i hope he gets the nhs done and education and Everything Else hes promised. A mad hatter, really thats how he comes across. But who knows, he might sort it out. Jeremy corbyn was re elected in islington but his partys so called red wall of labour seats was damaged or demolished in parts of the midlands and the north of england. He says he will stay on until his successor is elected but his long standing critics just want him to go. I dont think you can have the proper, deep reflection that we need to have under the leadership of a person who thinks that the programme is all right, that he worked really hard and that the only thing that was wrong was that the media did not like him and that the brexit message was wrong. When labour mps return to westminster next week they will be a much diminished group, nearly 60 fewer of them than after the 2017 general election. The party is now looking for a new leader and a new deputy leader, and whilejeremy corbyn has called for a period of reflection, in truth, battles are likely to rage over the reasons for labours defeat. And today, one of the leading figures in the leadership has announced that he is withdrawing from the front line. The new leader will come in place, appoint their shadow cabinet. I wont be part of that shadow cabinet, ive done my bit. We need to move on at that stage with the new leader, and i think we will be in a position where we are learning lessons and listening to people. What was it . It was notjust brexit, i think there was a long history of maybe a0 years of neglect. Next week, he will bring his brexit bill back to parliament, but for now, Boris Johnson is familiarising himself with territory that many thought would never go tory. Stay with us on bbc world news. According to Chinese State media the countrys Football Association has also responded, calling ozil comments unnacceptable. And some chinese fans have called for a ban on arsenal games being broadcast in the country. Our news correspondentjohn mcmanus explains that for clubs like arsenal, the Chinese Market is too valuable to lose. There are millions of football fans in china who follow the uk premier league and the teams in the premier league extremely closely. Arsenal, like other clubs, is always trying to expand its presence there. For example, the club has a mandarin language website which, by the way, featured mesut ozil and other players in a video celebrating chinese new year, not so long ago. It has a chain of restaurants. In 1999, a young immigrant from guinea in west africa was shot at 41 times by new york Police Outside his front door. The death of amadou diallo sparked mass protests in the us. His mother Kadiatou Diallo has been speaking to us about her son, and his legacy. I will never forget that day. I collapsed at my door. My daughter held me and said mum, i know something is wrong, but take it easy. My new then my life, that i was living before, would never be the same again. Amadou diallo came to the bronx two years ago in search of the american dream. That dream ended here on his doorstep when he was shot down in a volley of 41 bullets that have left their scars. He was unarmed but the officers said they thought he was reaching for a gun. I was devastated. They thought he was reaching for a gun. Iwas devastated. Not they thought he was reaching for a gun. I was devastated. Not only because my child was gone but also the way he was killed. All i wanted was to cross the ocean and come to new york and find out why my child would be gun down like that. Amadou was my first born. I had him when i was my first born. I had him when i was 16 years old. He was very shy. But he was gentle. He could make friends so easily because hes a lwa ys friends so easily because hes always accommodating and smiling and wanting to help people. He always dreams of going to america because he wanted to be independent, he was saving to spend his money for college. The last time i spoke with him wasa college. The last time i spoke with him was a day that he was very excited. When he called he said to me, mum, i have good news foryou. I have saved 9,000 and im ready to enrolled in college. Anger and disbelief from the community where amadou diallo lived. Holding their wallets aloft they asked how the four officers could have mistaken his wallet for a gun. When i arrived in new york i said, you have to take me where my son lived and died. I remembered seeing the Bullet Wounds on the wall. I remember picking up my sons clothes, bringing it to my face, just to smell him. When i came to new york and i saw the outcry and the response of all the people of all origins, all religions and colours, people marching, protesting, i was comforted by that support. It was thousands and thousands of people. That energy was so powerful. I was sitting in the court room everyday. When the verdict was given, acquitting the four officers, i was devastated and i felt betrayed because four officers, i was devastated and ifelt betrayed because how four officers, i was devastated and i felt betrayed because how can an innocent person like amadou be killed and to be blamed for his own death . Because that was the argument in the end. Hands up, dont shoot after amadou, so many people have fallen victim from this same police brutality. My mission was the amadou diallo foundation. The goal of it is educational healing and bringing greater awareness. I started the foundation in 2001 and since then, weve given scholarship to african stu d e nts weve given scholarship to African Students who were also struggling, like amadou. That helped to heal me a little bit. I dont want anyone to ever forget who my child was. I want him to be remembered by the life he lived, not the way he had died. The mother of amadou diallo telling the story of her son and also his legacy. You can reach me on twitter im bbcnuala we love to hear from you. Stay with us. More headlines coming up. A fairly blustery end to the day. Even though the wind is going to stay strong, temperatures are going to drop. Across parts of scotland, northern ireland, Northern England and north wales especially, where hill snow may be an additional hazard. At the moment, some lively showers working during the second half of the night, showers coming into north wales, Northern England, southern scotland and northern ireland. Still some gusty wind for some. A few centimetres of snow here and there which may lead to even further tricky conditions. Add on to the fact that in the gaps between them, temperatures will drop low enough to go below freezing. So, thats with wind touching 40, may be 50 mph at times around the south and west. We may see temperatures close to freezing, if not below across many northern parts of the uk into tomorrow morning. So, a chilly start to sunday more. The big picture shows we have an area of low pressure to the north of us. The rain bearing weather fronts cleared away but another one is set to push into the south west later which will strengthen the winds. In between those two, only a few showers dotted around in the morning. Then a bit of an icy start for some. Some sleet and snow showers still over parts in scotland in particular. A lot of dry and sunny weather through sunday. But as we go into the afternoon, southern and western areas, in particular, the showers are going to start to get going again. The wind, not quite as strong as today. Coming in from a mainly south westerly direction. But they will reach gale force across the south west later on and we may see severe gales around the hebrides and the north west highlands. Temperatures, after a chilly, frosty start, its going to be a rather cool day, 4 8 degrees. Another chilly and icy night. Some showers around. Some hill snow. Monday, the main chance of hill snow will be over central and northern parts of scotland. Outbreaks of rain back into northern ireland. Much of england and wales have a dry and bright day but cloud increasing from the south west later and we will see outbreaks of rain coming in towards the south east corner. All linked into this area of low pressure. This comes with a health warning, how close that will get to the south and east is a bit uncertain but if it does come towards us, a spell of hill snow is possible. At the moment, finely balanced. For the rest of the week, wind picking up, temperatures increasing but the rain will become more extensive. This is bbc world news. The headlines.
