Appoint their shadow cabinet. I wont be part of that shadow cabinet, you know, ive done my bit. We need to move on, at that stage, with that new leader. Police in new zealand name the first victim of the white island eruption as krystal eve browitt, a 21 year old australian. 15 deaths have been now been confirmed following mondays eruption. Tens of thousands of people have rallied again in rome protesting against italys far right league party. The protesters pack themselves so tightly into squares theyve become known as the sardines. And coming up at 8 30pm, 22 years on, a british driver is trying to break his own world land speed record in bloodhound chasing the land speed record. Good evening, and welcome to bbc news. The Prime Minister has visited the north east of england to thank voters in traditional labour heartlands for backing his party. Borisjohnson met with supporters in newly conservative sedgefield, tony blairs former constituency. The labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn is coming under increasing pressure to resign with immediate effect after his party suffered its worst Election Results since the 1930s. Our Political Correspondent iain watson reports. A Prime Minister is a familiar sight in these parts, though its usually been a labour not a conservative one. So where better for borisjohnson to rub his opponents nose in the election result than in tony blairs old Stomping Ground of sedgefield . I know that people may have been breaking the voting habits of generations to vote for us. And i want the people of the north east to know that we in the conservative party, and i, will repay your trust. So, what issues will he have to focus on if he is to retain the trust of new supporters . I hope he does a good job, he will get brexit done and i hope he gets the nhs done. And education and Everything Else he has promised. Mad hatter, really thats how he comes across. But who knows, he might sort it out. Jeremy corbyn was re elected in islington, but his partys so called red wall was damaged or demolished in parts of the midlands and the north of england. He says he will stay on until his successor is elected, but his long standing critics just want him to go. I dont think you can have the proper, deep reflection that we need to have under the leadership of a person who thinks that the programme is all right and he worked really hard and the only thing and the only thing that was wrong was that the media did not like him and that the brexit message was wrong. When labour mps return to westminster next week, they will be a much diminished group nearly 60 fewer of them than after the 2017 general election. The party is now looking for a new leader and a new deputy leader, and whileJeremy Corbyn has called for a period of reflection, in truth, battles are likely to rage over the reasons for labours defeat. And today, one of the leading figures in the leadership has announced that he is withdrawing from the front line. The new leader will come in place, appoint the shadow cabinet, i wont be part of the shadow cabinet, ive done my bit. We need to move on at that stage with the new leader, and i think we will be in a position where we are learning lessons and listening to people. What was it . It wasntjust brexit, i think there was a long history of maybe a0 years of neglect. Next week, he will bring his brexit bill back to parliament, but for now, Boris Johnson is familiarising himself with territory that many thought would never go tory. And as iain has been explaining, the infighting has continued amongst labour mps over the timing of Jeremy Corbyn standing down as party leader. I think that pressure will continue to grow from mps over the next few days, especially those who favour a quicker contest with some others are quite happy to have a period of reflection. One of four that make Council Elections in case it becomes difficult but no more than a few months to take a look at some big issues that labour has to address we will see kind of a battle over the reasons for the defeat because before we even get to new candidates for leadership, they will want to be able to say that they can solve a problem that has been diagnosed. So is itJeremy Corbyn and the party going too far left quiz . Is it brexit and lead people in it leave areas charisma is a mixture of those things or perhaps asjohn mcdonnell suggested, a loss any problem from a berm at this and felt they were the incumbents and neglecting their own base . I think these arguments are to be heard and at that point will start to then say to people who are likely to try to want to take over perhaps declaring at that point and perhaps declaring at that point and perhaps these are mps spending a lot of time looking at the problem for labour in towns around the country. Jess phillips a big critic ofJeremy Corbyn and keira sturmer who is strong on the brexit issue and perhaps emily thornberry. But i think supportive of budget criticisms rather than throwing their hats in the ring. That internal reflection could become quite ugly. There have already been calls for momentum from stepping away from the party. It could be quite ugly. Momentum have it thrown down the gauntlet and they said they have 40,000 members present they are very active and have people in certain constituencies to campaign and they said they will keep the labour party socialist. What they wa nt to labour party socialist. What they want to do above all else is to make sure thatJeremy Corbyn is going to his politics dont go along with them. But even in the left of the party, there are lots of arguments about what should happen next. Whether in fact you need to have a more charismatic leader or have a women was who favour someone like rebecca long billy. But also about how to present their politics. Some agree with this wide range of radical policies they had a nationalization but disagree on the fa ct nationalization but disagree on the fact that they seem to come thick and faster in the election chemotherapy people were not even able to take in what they were talking about. Some on the left recognise there also has to be a different presentation of the policies and the direction of the party is correct. The possibility that we could see quite a right spread change in terms of what labour looks like thinking of the faces here present becausejohn mcdonnell is not going to be in the shadow cabinet. Is this what the party does need, more change . think from his point of view, there is some talk on the left me wanting to stand as party leader who is a driving force behind momentum and some so he could be interim leader ifJeremy Corbyn went but he seems to think that when the leader comes along, he is not resigning immediately but when a new leader comes along, he will step aside because he wants to change the generational shift in labour party and was asleep women and some from the regeneration taking over and that may change the front bench in labour party and how it looks. Very quickly, what can we expect for the upcoming week . Getting sworn in on tuesday because a radical turnover so an awful lot of them doing that and then Boris Johnson so an awful lot of them doing that and then borisjohnson was to give the impression that he has got to use the words of a direct sense of momentum that he has now the Prime Minister can get things done. So on thursday we get the queens of speech in the programme for government and of course there was one not long before the general election itself and coming back and try to put for these priorities on policing and Health Service and so on. Then on friday, but ahead with brexit and will succeed we can predict and get this Withdrawal Agreement bill through parliament. What is called second reading at its next age. Not over, has to go to the house of lords before christmas he will get his vote on brexit to say he is on its way to getting it done. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 30pm and 11 30pm this evening in the papers. Our guestsjoining me tonight are the deputy leader writer at the sun, olivia utley, and the editor of the political website labourlist, sienna rodgers. That suggests because talking about family that we are talking about a father and son as was reported by the local media. They said they are liaising with the authorities in argentina to try to get more information about what is happening. They also understand a person on the motorbike of people involved in this template so there isa involved in this template so there is a big search under way for them. Cctv looked at by the police. Half the Forward Office given advice on travelling to the country . Asked the Forward Office. They said last year most incidents ended with no incident but they do more people travelling to the area that there is a danger of street robbery and the advice is people who are approached should not resist in any way and hand over any valuables if necessary. Simon, thank you very much. Passengers are being advised to check train times before travelling from tomorrow as major timetable changes are introduced. Rail Companies Say journey times will be cut, Services Made more frequent and new routes added following investment in infrastructure and carriages. But concerns remain over whether there may be disruption during the transition period, as our Business CorrespondentKatie Prescott explains. This is the nightmare scenario. When train timetables were changed in may last year chaos ensued. Standing room only as passengers faced cancellations, delays and overcrowding. But the organisation representing the train Companies Says this time things will be different. What were doing now is were looking at each other in the eye, whether it be train operators or infrastructure managers, and saying, are you really ready to put these new services on . And if they look as if they would impact either punctuality or reliability, they are pulled from being an additional service. We dont want to go through what happened last year. If the new timetable is a success, passengers like these could benefit from faster and more frequent services, with more trains and more carriages, meaning 1000 extra services a week, and some quite significant changes for some parts of the uk. Tomorrow will see the biggest timetable change on the Great WesternRailway Network since the 19705. The electrification of the line between london and bristol will shave 12 minutes off the quickest trains. The maesteg and conwy lines in wales will get sunday services for the first time. And there will be major improvements on the scotrail network, with Additional Trains in north east scotland, as well as extra seats between edinburgh and glasgow. Passengers are advised to check before they travel, as many train times are changing from tomorrow. Katie prescott, bbc news. Negotiations at the United NationsClimate Summit in madrid continue this weekend without an agreement in sight. Known as cop25, the summit was meant to decide on rules for the implementation of the 2015 paris climate agreement. Many key issues were left open after last years summit in poland and remain unresolved. Our environment correspondent matt mcgrath has the latest developments. Almost every country in the world signed the paris climate agreement in the french capital about four years ago. One of the terms of that particular pact was that every country should update their National Plans on cutting carbon by the end of 2020, the end of next year. All those countries have come to this particular cop, conference of the parties, here in madrid to actually work out the wrinkles in that plan, the timetable when theyre going to submit their plans and to whom. But theyve run into major difficulties here, because a lot of the countries in the eu and small island states and many others feel that whats on the table is not ambitious enough. They feel that the science is very clear, the message from the streets is very clear countries need to be doing more. What they have seen it written down on the text here, theyre not very happy about. Other countries like the us, australia, japan, india and others, feel there is too much pressure in the plans at the moment, and are objecting to those. So there is a kind of stalemate here. There is also a big question mark over carbon markets. Lots of countries, including brazil, want to bring forward carbon credits from the past and use them in the future. Lots of people here object to that, feeling it would devalue the idea of a market. There is also the issue of loss and damage, this idea of compensating small island states for the damages endured by climate change, which they can link to climate change, and they re looking for composition for that. Theyre trying to agree some sort of compromise on that. All the parites feel here that theyre very far apart on a range of issues, and many of them blame the chilean presidency. Chile is the country tasked with trying to bring everybody together, the meeting is not being held in chile, its being held here in madrid because of civil unrest in that country. Many people feel here that the chileans havent done a fantasticjob. Theres still hope that they can get some plans together and work on a compromise. But the worry is that if they dont, these talks will end in failure, the conference might be suspended and have to be resumed at some point in the new year. West ham came out on top against southampton. 1 0 to relieve some of the pressure on their manager manuel pellegrini. West ham are now out of the relegation zone and up to fifteenth while southampton are still third from bottom. Michael redford watched this one. Plenty of christmas cheer this year. Less optimistic for west ham and a loss today could have led to a festive farewell for their manager. But despite recent form, it was west ham who started stronger. Less than two minutes got gone when Declan Wright scored but quickly disallowed for offside. A sign of things to come as something wrong with this finish. His first goal in over two months. West ham felt they had a second as proved too strong for the cement and defence. Celebrations though proved premature as the handball was given an review to the rescue of southampton. Not long before so that they were left frustrated not by technology but instead by the woodwork. The man denied his danny ings. Tens of thousands of people have gathered in rome for what the organisers hope will be the biggest street protest against italys far right league party, led by the former deputy Prime MinisterMatteo Salvini. The movement, called the sardines, started last month and has grown rapidly. Our rome correspondent mark lowen is at the protests in the italian capital. A month ago, this movement did not exist. But it has sprung up from a flash mob to this, tens of thousands in rome, rising up against the league, led by Matteo Salvini. They call themselves the sardines because they pack themselves tightly into piazzas across the country in the last week. The call for respect to human rights, for welcoming migrants, a return to the core values of democracy. And they warn that the ghosts of italys fascist past are returning. We want to demonstrate that we are here, the other half of italy is here. We are not agreeing with what has been done in the last year. I do not like Matteo Salvini, i think either he represents a part of italians that did not wake up from fascism. We are here to prove that some italians are. I think my work here is to stand up for everyones rights, i think everyone here has the same purpose. Looking out across the sea of sardines, you see pictures of fish, but what you do not see are political banners and flags, because this movement wants to rise above the traditional parties, above italys polarised political system. They want to stop Matteo Salvini winning an important Regional Election in northern italy next month, which if he were to triumph in, could spark National Elections which polls say he could win. They believe the tide is turning against populism in this country, and the sardines are riding it. A little earlier i spoke to analissa piras, an italian filmmaker and political observer, about the rapid rise of the so called sardines movement. Its fascinating because its so young, just one month, it has managed to mobilise so many people everywhere in italy. The fact that, in only one month, it has managed to get to rome, to piazza san giovanni, which is the Historic Place where big protests gather, its quite extraordinary. What is also lovely is the jolliness and creativity of it, people are building and sewing their own sardines, it is very creative and very festive. It is completely apolitical, but it is sending a very strong and serious message, i believe. It is a response to the kind of triumph in social media and new technology that the new populist fascist force, represented by Matteo Salvini, has managed to do. This is the italian Civic Society that is saying no to those kind ofanti immigration, racist, extremist views of Matteo Salvini. Police have officially named the first victim of the white island volcano eruption in new zealand as Recovery Efforts continue. Krystal eve browitt was a 21 year old australian who was visiting the island with her family. Her father and sister are both in hospital with serious injuries. 15 deaths have been now been confirmed from mondays eruption, while about 20 people are in intensive care with severe burns. So ash, chemicals in the water and when the divers have to come out of the water, they must be decontaminated. Visibility is not good in the water. What theyre looking for is a body. The other is still thought to be on the island. There will be no attempt to go back into land on the island today, so the authorities are concentrating their efforts on the seas, looking for one of those last known victims. Weather forecasters are warning australia could experience its hottest day on record next week. Temperatures are expected to peak in many areas from wednesday. The Current Record ofjust over 50 degrees celsius was set in 1960. New fire warnings have been issued for western parts of the country, as well as queensland. Now its time for a look at the weather with matt taylor. Good evening, a very blustery day out there and you can see ice for a few across parts of scotland, northern ireland, england and west wales where hell snow could be an additional hazard. Some showers working from west to east in an odd rubble of thunder and some bringing heavy rain for others a covering of snow. It is a clear away in the second half of the night, six showers coming into wales and northern ireland. Gusty winds for some and it could have a few senators of snow here and there which could lead to even further tricky conditions and at all to the fa ct tricky conditions and at all to the fact that in the gaps between them and with the reserves will drop low enough to go below freezing. That is with winds touching 40 or 50 mph at times in the south and west, could still see two pictures close to freezing if not below across many northern parts of the uk into tomorrow morning. Actually start to sunday morning. Big picture shows that we still have an area of low pressure to the north. The front brought the evening rain cleared away by another one said to push into the southwest letter which will strengthen the winds. In between those two, only a few showers that arise in the morning and a bit of an icy start for some. Some sleet and snow showers still across parts of scotla nd snow showers still across parts of scotland in particular. Lots of dry and sunny with a through sunday but as we go through in the afternoon, so the and Western Areas in particular the shower start to get going again. Winds not quite as strong as today and coming in from selflessly direction but they will reach gale force across the southwest letter on a could see severe gales around the hebrides in the northwest islands. Two pictures after actually start, it is going to bea after actually start, it is going to be a cool day of 4 8d. In other chilean icy night with some showers around a bit of elsa also on monday, main chance of hill snow across central and northern scotland as you see outbreaks of rain sliding back into northern ireland. Much of him and wells have a dry and bright debacle and increase from the southeast later and we start to see outbreaks of rain worked its way into words at southeast corner. All of this area of low pressure. This comes as a bit of a Health Warning and just closed that gets to the south and east is uncertain if it comes to worse as, a spell of hill snow is certainly possible. It is a finely balanced thing at the moment but stays or if it does not and the rest of the weep winds pick up and temperatures increase in the rain becomes more extensive. Hello, this is bbc news. Now on bbc news, chasing the land speed record. Well, the thing about the land speed record is it is the last of the amateur corinthian sports. It is done purely for the love, the fascination of it. Some people argue, well, the old cars are no more, but forget it is a car, we are pushing the boundaries of engineering to its absolute limit. Every day i go, why are we doing this . It may be the last land speed record as we know it
