Elected, leading election period but his critics reject that ideal dont think i can have a proper, to perfection that we need to have under the leadership of a person who thinks that the programme is all right, that he worked really hard, the only thing that was wrong was wrong was that the media didnt like him, and that the brexit message was wrong. Train Companies Say they plan to increase services, cutjourney times and add new routes across the country, following investment in infrastructure and rolling stock. Our Business Correspondent Katie Prescott has more. This is the nightmare scenario. When train timetables were changed in may last year, chaos ensued. Standing room only, as passengers faced cancellations, delays and overcrowding. But the organisation representing the train Companies Says this time things will be different. What were doing now is were looking at each other in the eye, whether it be train operators or infrastructure managers, and saying, are you really ready to put these new services on . And if they look as if they would impact either punctuality or reliability, they are pulled from being an additional service. We dont want to go through what happened last year. If these timetable changes are a success, some parts of the uk will benefit from faster and more frequent services. Tomorrow will see the biggest timetable change on the Great Western Railway Network since the 19705. The electrification of the line between london and bristol will shave 12 minutes off the quickest trains. The maesteg and conwy lines in wales will get sunday services for the first time, and there will be major improvements on the scotrail network, with Additional Trains in north east scotland, as well as extra seats between edinburgh and glasgow. The Prime Minister is visiting the north east of england, where a surge of conservative support in traditional labour heartlands helped him storm to victory in the general election. Borisjohnson has promised to repay the trust of people who voted for the tories for the first time. Oui our country has now embarked on a wonderful adventure, and we are going to recover our National Self confidence, our mojo, ourself belief, and we are going to do things differently and better as a country, because we can. There are fantastic opportunities, and i see the mayor over there. Cheering we will look at free trade, better regulations, Cutting National Insurance contributions, all sorts of things differently and better, and it will be a wonderful time for oui and it will be a wonderful time for our country. Our country will stand tall in the world, but i want to say to all of my colleagues as mp5, when we get down to westminster, we begin oui we get down to westminster, we begin our work. Remember, we are not the masters, we are the servants now. We are the servants now. And ourjob is to serve the people of this country and to deliver on our priorities, and to deliver on our priorities, and our priorities and their priorities are the same. Of course, thatis priorities are the same. Of course, that is getting brexit done, but also delivering on the nhs, the education, safer streets, better hospitals, a betterfuture for the country. That is what we will deliver and focus on. Thank you all very much. Thank you for coming along. Thank you for your wonderful achievement in transforming our party, transforming the political map of this country and, i think, putting britain on a brighter, better path. Cheering we can speak now to james johnson, former pollster to theresa may. Borisjohnson was Boris Johnson was speaking borisjohnson was speaking in sedgefield, tony blairs former constituency. Thank you for coming in. You have done some polling in terms of what might have tipped it in this massive victory for what are you finding . We found the brexit message that the conservatives had, as borisjohnson said, resonated the most, with 87 of voters who defected from labour citing get brexit done as the main reason for coming over, and 85 of conservative voters, so the power of the message was coming through. Some other things, consistently in focus groups during the campaign thatJeremy Corbyn has been a real problem for labour, people not trusting him, people not feeling they represent him, but also anti semitism and, in that polling, we have one in five, almost one in five voters who left labour and went direct to the conservatives citing anti semitism is one of the main reasons for their vote. That is quite significant. Anti semitism was a key factor. Are there any other factors you have found in terms of the switches . The economy is surprisingly important, much more so than in 2017, where the conservatives struggled to get the economy to cut through. This time, the economy was quite present with those switches, and perhaps concerns over labour Spending Plans and their economic competence, and Jeremy Corbyn. We have consistently seen throughout this campaign in focus groups in Birmingham Northfield earlier in the campaign, which the conservatives took from labour, two nights ago, and in that they cited Jeremy Corbyn and said, this guy does not stand up for them, they didnt trust him, and they found each borisjohnson didnt trust him, and they found each Boris Johnson more didnt trust him, and they found each borisjohnson more relatable, despite being voters for years. When labour looks at the data, the question now is, is it brexit or is it corbyn . That is one of the key arguments in the labour party. Can you have another far left candidate who might persuade labour voters back . Its a mixed picture, this, because Jeremy Corbyn back . Its a mixed picture, this, becauseJeremy Corbyn immensely unpopular, the most unpopular Opposition Leader going into an election ever, but the voters dont dislike corbyn because of his radicalism. They dislike him because they thought he was a bit useless and not competent and the anti semitism issues we discussed. There is a possibility that the labour party with the same policies but a credible enough leader and credible enough reputation could be yet popular so, as an example, when i was running the polling at number ten, the labour leader that polled the best for labour who we were worried about was john mcdonnell. The best for labour who we were worried about wasjohn mcdonnell. It is by no means default that, by going to the centre for labour, that will win them back these working class voters. Will win them back these workingclass voters. Are you just saying that because you are a conservative person . No. You can look it up. John mcdonnell, they looked at him and they saw a man on top of his brief, a bit more competent, and they believed him. But tax and spending, and people we re but tax and spending, and people were worried about very high taxation. If you have another party leader in that vein, are you really saying that Centre Ground voters will come back to the labour party . Is that possible . A lot of these voters did is that possible . A lot of these voters d id vote is that possible . A lot of these voters did vote for labour in 2017, and that excuse has rolled out a lot, but there is some truth in the fa ct lot, but there is some truth in the fact that people did like their ma nifesto fact that people did like their manifesto and, at number ten, we we re manifesto and, at number ten, we were aware of that, because you sought theresa may pushing for the Energy Price Cap and her tone on business and just about managing. Borisjohnson business and just about managing. Boris johnson says business and just about managing. Borisjohnson says he will be spending, and we need to see that we tell, but people dont care about the detail, it is often an instinctive question, do you trust person to deliver something that will help me and my family . That is the point. When the public engage with manifestos or policies, they are with manifestos or policies, they a re really with manifestos or policies, they are really engaging on the basis of the leader wasnt rebrand and the party band. That brand for labour in this election doubt was absolutely trashed, but of that was because of Jeremy Corbyn himself and the reputation of the labour party. In my focus groups, people were still saying they were worried it would be just like last time, meaning golden brown and the financial crisis, nine yea rs on brown and the financial crisis, nine years on from gordon brown being Prime Minister. So there is no doubt that those reputations were problems but it is conceivable that, with more yea rs but it is conceivable that, with more years to go a a more debt new leader who is more credible, from the centre of the left, they could make those policies work. So, from Johnsons Point of view, what are the questions that he should be looking at . You can see where Boris Johnson has gone, the north, and they clearly know that a lot of these voters probably wavered over crossing the box for the tories. It is not a solid voting coalition, but the conservatives have a chance now to persuade them they can hold onto them, so the nhs will be key, showing progress in showing that the conservatives can be trusted with the nhs, education will be possible, desperate important, brexit, and immigration. The conservatives will have to show they have delivered an numeration system that works for them. How much is the personality of them. How much is the personality of the leader important compared with policy or anything else . Its very important, and that is one key reason you see the conservatives doing better in this election compared to 2017. I worked for theresa may and respected her very much but the campaign that was structured for her was one that sort of, the poster saw that theresa may was popular and said, lets put her name on the side of us and take around the country. That clearly didnt suit theresa may, and other people in number ten, myself included, were saying we should go for a much more Traditional Campaign with more of the cabinet on show, she should be on the doorstep a lot more. That campaign didnt suit theresa may in 2017 and, in 2019, it did suit chrisjohnson. He clearly had quite a fun time during the campaign, going around, dressing up asa campaign, going around, dressing up as a postman, owing to factories. Some people were worried about the way the tories conducted this campaign, intimidation towards the press etc. Did that play at all . Are there concerns about borisjohnson . I covered the richmond seat, where Zac Goldsmith lost, and the lib dems we re Zac Goldsmith lost, and the lib dems were saying that borisjohnson was a turn off there. Were saying that borisjohnson was a turnoff there. Certainly, Boris Johnson was also unpopular going into this election, we mustnt forget that, but he clearly didnt appeal to these working class voters who left labour, and those focus groups i mentioned in birmingham, people didnt talk about voting conservative, they talked about voting for boris, and they liked his authenticity. Clearly, borisjohnson has some trust issues and it is not all plain sailing for him, but the issues that caught up with Boris Johnson during the campaign were largely process issues about tv debates or interviews, rather than the big substance issues that could have caused trouble for him, so i think the conservatives will be happy. There is a big study coming up happy. There is a big study coming up which will give us more data. Yes, everybody is polling based on data from the day. The British Election study comes out in the new year, thousands of photos, and is conducted face to face, so watch out for that in january and conducted face to face, so watch out for that injanuary and february, which will be the most authoritative source on what happened on thursday. I guess it could help labour choose its next leader. And you forjoining us. The labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, says he wont quit until a successor is chosen, which is likely to be early next year. Shadow cabinet minister Emily Thornberry is being tipped for the role, but today said more time is needed before decisions are made. I dont have anything to say. I need to get to my surgery this morning andi to get to my surgery this morning and i am late, and frankly there will be a lot of work to do in the next five years with this horrible tory government. I think my surgery will be full of people getting their benefits cut. Do you want to be labour leader . I am in a period of mourning and we need a chance to stop and think. I have nothing else to say. Nicola sturgeon has welcomed the snps new mps in dundee following what she described as a watershed general election. Just a few hours after discussing a second independence referendum with the Prime Minister, the snp leader met for a photo call and celebrations with her 48 successful candidates. My my plan is the one i put before the scottish people on thursday and got an endorsement and a mandate for, so i will continue with that. The tories probably havent yet come to terms with what happened on thursday first they were rejected in scotland. They put the issue of opposition to an independence referendum on the ballot paper, and they lost vote share, more than 50 of their seats. It was a catastrophic defeat for the tories. I think the danger for them catastrophic defeat for the tories. I think the dangerfor them is, the longer they trying to do that, the more contempt they show for scottish democracy, the more they will increase support for independence, so to supporters of independence i would simply say the mandate and momentum is clearly on our side. Much more from me here at westminster throughout the afternoon, but for now its back to the studio. Divers are continuing to search the waters near white island volcano in new zealand in efforts to retrieve two remaining bodies. 1a deaths have been confirmed from mondays eruption. Around 20 people remain in intensive care with severe burns. Our correspondent, phil mercer, explained how the search for the final two bodies is progressing. Police divers and their colleagues from the navy have been in the contaminated waters off white island and those seas have been contaminated by that volcanic eruption on monday. So ash, chemicals in the water and when the divers have to come out of the water, they must be decontaminated. Visibility is not good in the water. What theyre looking for is a body. A body was seen in the sea, 2a hours after the eruption. So, the authorities believe that there are two more victims that they need to retrieve. One of them is believed to be in the water. The other is still thought to be on the island. There will be no attempt to go back into land on the island today, so the authorities are concentrating their efforts on the seas, looking for one of those last known victims. North korean state media say the country has conducted another test at a satellite launch site to bolster its Strategic Nuclear deterrence. The state news agency said it was a succesful test of great significance, without giving further details about was being tested. The unspecified test took place at the sohae satellite launching ground. Ankit panda is the author of the book kimjong un and the bomb. He explained the background to the test. The significant thing here is that this test is the second to take place at this very facility in a matter of days. They conducted another test that they called a very important test on december 7th. If we take the two of them together, i think we can surmise that this likely had a similar purpose. It probably involved the test on the ground of a rocket engine which might find use on a satellite launcher or it might find use on a ballistic missile. Given the tone of their statements, however, i would expect it to be the latter in this case. The United Nations has accused the police and army in chile of committing serious Human Rights Violations in their response to recent Anti Government demonstrations, in which nearly 30 people were killed. Un investigators say they have found evidence of widespread torture, ill treatment, Sexual Violence and arbitrary detention against protesters over the past two months. Gareth barlow reports. Its become a familiar sight, police and protesters clashing on the streets of the chilean capital. This latest flare up hot on the heels of condemnation by the United Nations of the governments response to the demonstrations. Un investigators have found, over the past two months, the Security Forces have been linked to unlawful deaths, Sexual Violence and over 100 cases of torture and ill treatment. Sexual violence and over 100 cases of torture and illtreatment. Human Rights Violations documented include the excessive or unnecessary use of force that led to unlawful killings and injuries, arbitrary detentions and injuries, arbitrary detentions and torture and ill treatment. And injuries, arbitrary detentions and torture and illtreatment. In october, anger at a proposed rise in metro prices escalated into wider demonstrations against wealth inequality and poor state funding. The un said the police were fundamentally repressive stop the chilean government said violent demonstrations showed that their response but that investigations we re response but that investigations were under way. Violent demonstrations triggered. Each of them is being or will be investigated by the Public Prosecutors Office and will be sanctioned according to what the courts deem appropriate. The un also disputed the governments claim almost 5000 people had been injured, saying the true figure could be much higher, but noted attacks had been carried out against Security Forces, alongside looting and destruction of private property. Now, as the demonstrations continue, the response from the police and authorities is being closely watched. Now its time for a look at the weather. A blustery field to the weather out there this afternoon and through the rest of the weekend. We will have a mix of blustery showers, some sunshine, but you will notice the strength of the wind. Gusts are likely to reach a0 to 50 mph, especially windy around the coasts. Temperature is about four to six in the north, with perhaps double figures for time further south. Drierfor a time, but then more showers work in from the west. Through tonight, a risk of ice forming at some hill snow, especially in parts of northern ireland, scotland, Northern England and wales, with those showers turning to sleet and snow over the high ground. They will be falling as rain at lower levels. Plenty of showers and enough of a breeze to keep things largely frost free in the south but, further north, temperatures a degree or two below freezing. Tomorrow starts with a bit of sunshine but they will be more showers working in from the west, again falling as sleet or snow over the highest ground, and another blustery day with winds gusting about 20 to 30 mph, perhaps 50 around the coast. As windy as today but blustery and pretty chilly again. Not as windy
